The Chairman-designate of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Professor Akintunde Akinwande, has rejected his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari to head the agency. The rejection marked the third time an appointee by Buhari would reject his or her nominations in recent days. Mrs. Pauline Tallen (Plateau) and Usman Bugaje (Katsina) recently rejected their ambassadorial appointments. Indications that Akinwande had rejected his appointment arose when he shunned his invitation to appear before the Senate Committee on Power for screening yesterday and consequently stalling the screening of other nominees. It was learnt that Akinwande rejected the nomination because he was not consulted before the nomination was made. To underscore his lack of interest in the appointment, he had hitherto failed to appear before the Department of State Services (DSS) for security screening. It was also learnt that among the nominees whose credentials were sent to the Senate Committee on Power, Steel Development and Metallurgy, Akinwande’s credentials was conspicuously missing. It was further gathered that the professor was not resident in Nigeria but based in the United States where he’s pursuing a project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. “We also learnt that adequate consultation was not made before the man was nominated. We were therefore informed that the nominee may have turned down his nomination,” a source added. Explaining the rationale behind the committee’s suspension of further screening, the Chairman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said it was impossible to screen other nominees in the absence of the chairman-designate. Abaribe also said the privatisation of electricity sector was meant to improve the power sector, adding that the inauguration of NERC board was key to solving the power sector problems. “Regrettably, when members of the committee assembled to screen the nominees made by President Buhari, we were told that the chairman-designate was unavoidably absent. The presidential liaison who brought the nominees informed us that the chairman was unavoidably absent,” Abaribe added. Abaribe further observed that since Akinwande’s nomination had been made in the past three months, the Presidency should have confirmed the preparedness of the chairman-designate to appear for screening or otherwise. “The commission is vital and cannot function without a chairman,” Abaribe insisted. Abaribe however, assured those concerned that the committee was ready to screen the nominees but insisted that “we cannot screen them until we have a formal communication from the presidency.” Other nominees to the board are Sanusi Garuba (vice chairman), Nathan Shatti (commissioner), Dr. Moses Arigu (commissioner), Dafe Akpeneye (commissioner), Prof. Frank Okafor (commissioner) and Musiliu Oseni (commissioner). I was at home yesterday and I heard a noise emanating from my neighbour's room, I discovered it was baba rasheed beating his son again for speaking in yoruba language. This is the same man who just change the school of his son to a new school because they taught yoruba. The son now attends a school where they teach more of English Language and forbid their students from speaking and writing in Yoruba language. Today, 40% of most children from Yoruba homes cannot speak their indigenous dialect fluently, while the remaining 60% cannot even read and write in our mother tongue. To make matters worse, the few that can speak and write in Yoruba language are now classified with derogative words like unbrilliant, unbred, uncivilized, illiterate, etc. In consequence, Yoruba children nowadays are no longer comfortable speaking their indigenous dialect publicly, as many of them even regard it as vernacular and this dilemma are all in the name of civilization, urbanization and modernization. The above scenario that occur in my neighbour room also exist in most Yoruba home across the world. Our parents and guardians are now the agent of westernization, they prefer to communicate with their children in English language and indirectly encourage them to embrace western values, culture, traditions, etc at the detriment of our own indigenous cultural system. _Good morning_ |

Mr Dan Bature, an Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police in Charge of Zone 11 comprising Oyo, Osun and Ondo states, says any policeman checking vehicle particulars on the highways is on illegal duty. Bature said this on Wednesday in Ibadan during a two-day familiarisation visit to Oyo State. He said that the duty of the police was not to check vehicle particulars but to ensure safer roads. Bature warned policemen against blocking high ways, saying police patrol vehicles were not supposed to be toll gates. He said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was committed to changing the negative image of the police and supporting the anticorruption war of the Federal Government. Bature advised officers unable to key into the laudable initiatives of the IGP to resign from the force. He said that a lot was expected by the public from the police, adding that this informed the monitoring of officers. “The Inspector General of Police is determined to improve on your welfare and pursue the increment of your salary. “But this can only be achieved when the people have good perception about the police, “Bature said. Earlier, Sam Adegbuyi, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, said that the officers were dedicated and patriotic. Adegbuyi said that in view of the population of Oyo State, the command needed to create three more Area Commands in addition to the existing four commands. He commended the AIG, Oyo government and the Police Community Relation Committee for the successes recorded so far in the fight against crime. 15 million girls under the age of 18 are married off each year around the world. Whether these marriages are arranged for financial reasons or are simply part of a cultural norm, the facts don’t change: these married school-age girls are far less likely to complete their education, and they have a higher risk of dying in childbirth, contracting HIV, and being victims of domestic or sexual violence. Tanzania, located in eastern Africa, has high rates of married school-age girls as well as one of the highest rates of adolescent pregnancies in the world: 37% of underage girls in Tanzania are married, and more than one in five Tanzanian teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 have given birth. A new law passed last month in Tanzanian parliament aims to change this trend by making it illegal (and punishable by up to 30 years in prison) for a man to marry or impregnate a primary-school or second-school age girl. Previously, girls as young as fourteen were able to legally be married if their parents consented or as part of a special court consent procedure. The new law concerning child brides and underage pregnancies makes it illegal under any circumstances, and the legislation is not the only effort to ensure a brighter future with more possibilities and improve access to education for young girls in Tanzania. It goes hand in hand with Tanzania’s recently launched free education policy, which made primary and secondary school education available at no cost to all Tanzanian children. The government also issued a warning that parents who prohibit their children from attending school will also be punished. The new law, however, has some loopholes as far as how (and if) these men will actually be reported, especially considering that many child marriages are not legally or formally recognized and that they often occur when financially necessary for the girls’ family. The heads of the area schools will be required to submit information on recent student marriages or pregnancies. In addition to preventing these marriages and pregnancies in the first place, another positive step could be allowing girls who become pregnant to return to school after they give birth. The president of Gambia, which is located in West Africa, also announced a punishment of up to 20 years in jail for men marrying underage girls. http://www.inhabitots.com/men-in-tanzania-now-face-up-to-30-years-in-prison-if-they-marry-or-impregnate-a-school-age-girl/ |
