bigrovar: Major Upgrade to My Solar Setup (20kW Hybrid System)
I just wrapped up a big upgrade to my solar system. It’s now a 20kW hybrid solar setup — built mainly on traditional off-grid components, but I also added some grid-tie functionality using Deye Micro Inverters in AC-coupled mode.
This project has been in the works for over a year, and there’s a lot going on under the hood beyond just the specs:
IoT & Control: Built a custom system computer using a Raspberry Pi 4 Compute Module running Venus OS + Node-RED.
Smart Automation: Created several Node-RED flows to keep the system efficient. One cool one uses the Solcast weather forecast to predict tomorrow’s solar yield and automatically decide whether to allow grid input — and how much.
Monitoring & Dashboard: I switched to Grafana for visualization. The new dashboard gives a detailed view of performance and energy data.
I’m working on a detailed overview (with schematics) to explain how everything is connected. Hopefully, it will inspire anyone looking to build or upgrade their own setup.
👉 Live Dashboard: https://helio.openculture.org.ng/public-dashboards/867d6afd562543508eaf080533e7b652 You are doing well. You've got some great RE system. |

favouredbymercy: Good day everyone
I am using Powmr 4.2 hybrid and Haisic 25.6v black one, grid was on (charging was going on too), and supplying the house (load was lights and fridge), suddendly i heard a sound and power was off. Went where my setup was, saw inverter in error mode. Error 9 (bus soft start failed), battery shut down (battery is still shut down, not on)
Please what is the way foward? Location is Benin. Please
Please note my system is well protected With all necessary protection. It was not rainy, just normal grid usage (AC bypass mode) with less than 200w loads. Inverter power board issue. Send to a repair center. |

adrusa: To illustrate the point about batteries connected in parallel.
4 batteries. Felicity 200AH with ANT BMS. Tactel 300AH with JK-BMS. CATL (DIY) 280AH with JK-BMS. Valto 173AH with JBD BMS. Felicity and Valto are fully charged, 100% SOC while Tactel and CATL are still actively charging. Each of the batteries are doing their separate thing based on their SOC. Awesome. How did you have all this data nicely in one location? |

abuzz33: Reports coming out suggest that the Afriland Towers Fire was started in the INVERTER ROOM.
"According to the Federal Fire Service team leader from Ebute Metta, Mr Ehimen Momoh, the fire started from an inverter battery in the basement and spread to a parked Toyota Sienna and a motorcycle, both of which were completely burnt. Other vehicles in the basement were, however, saved."
Its very important that if you are installing solar systems to get EXPERIENCED installers who calculate load, wiring sizes and use fuses, breakers properly. Ensure that you also install smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher nearby in case of fire. I've personally seen a fire that started in an inverter room at a bank, and it turned out a faulty AC was the culprit. The AC caught fire, and melted rubber dripped onto batteries stacked below it, which were subsequently engulfed in flames. Without the CCTV video, many might have thought the inverter system was to blame. Anyway, nothing still beats using experienced installers or workers for your job. You can't cheap out on safety. Also, I wonder why our tall buildings in Nigeria don't have fire escapes. This is especially concerning since our Fire Service lacks the capacity to rescue people stuck in high-rises during fires. I just hope people install fire safety devices, like FM-200 fire extinguishers, in such sensitive areas |

BangaRice: The issue i discover about we buyers is assuming what favours us. Most cells arent grade A and they hint by including something like "<=5000 cycles" in the specs. Some are even rated less than 2000 cycles. It shows you that out of the total lifecycles, someone has used some of it thus the lesser than symbol.
Some chinkos also exploit the space created by such gaps in estimated life cycles of cells to sell not so good cells. You can do all the due diligence in the world, as long as you not in China, you don't get to see what is shipped to you till you receive it. But like I said, yet to take a loss from buying from China. Still the best place to do business. |

Dam5reey1: Incomplete story! How much did he buy the cells cause 100ah are not cheap! Share pictures if possible. Cause when we buy the Seller send Pictures and videos even before they ship! Or was it a case of they sent different battery from what they showed him? They didn't share picture before shipping. But they shared picture before he paid. Seller has agreed to a refund My bro I've seen things in Chinese importation- but I've never taken a loss. Most of the time I don't just bother to share some experience here as I'm busy with life offline

dollarnaira: This is bad and painful. But can you really fight this out successfully? Distance/cost of shipping alone is discouraging. They are trying to make it good. Like reship some numbers of grade A. Discount on future purchase. This may be a mistake. At the moment my guy can't tell. Just wants some grade A battery to be shipped to him. He will try to sell this one as B and take a loss. Doing business no easy. |

Chinese lithium battery market is crazy.
Loads of shady deals going on there.
If you have a good supplier hold am tight.
The rabbit hole is sure very deep.
My guy bought 250 pieces of 100AH supposedly new cells. Cells arrive and it's used cells with a new cell wrap. Supplier is saying they are not aware. Case still ongoing.
DIY is still king. Can't have it any other way. |

hakinze00: Thanks so much for the feedback but the goods I received was replica speaker and it sounds really awful hence the reason for return and aliexpress said the seller will cover the shipping expenses but nevertheless I will go to post office and speedaf office close to me and compare the shipping fee if it is too much than expected then I will decide if i should count my loses.
Note: I tried the refunds only options the seller was offering a mediocre compensation compared to the value of the item. The speaker cost over 500k and the seller was offering a compensation of just 11k. Fake JBL speaker? I fear to buy JBL, B&O or Bose from China. You may be better off buying their premium product like Anker. Edifier, etc |

Nigerian kids could be experts in solar installation before they are done with ss3.
Hope every school adopts this.
Solar installers here can also apply to schools as part time job. The Nigerian educational curriculum is long overdue for an update. |

Obnoxious2001: Can't even be a Nigerian problem.
Some people do solar in Nigeria to reduce bills Some for survival Some it's a necessity
So Nigeria no get business with any of those things.
Now this now brings me to another topic, will solar systems owners be willing to pay for insurances for their solar systems? Yes, I think they will. It will depend on the insurance premium and what it covers. |

HeavenlyBang: It's just terrible, really.
Of course they cut corners. Their 8kwh battery is only like 7.2kwh. Still amazing for the price, though, so I don't know why they just won't market it as what it actually is. Overstating capacity is a Chinese thing. They do this as you can't sue the people selling a product. Also regulatory compliance is not a thing in China. So not hard to see a 3000w rated device not handle 1000w. I wish they'd actually state the real capability of device. But that's where reviews and research can help or even better DIY your thing. |

Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by mctfopt: 6:41pm On Aug 29, 2025 |
RickyM: Of course if both batteries are connected in parallel, he will be able to technically draw 300A at 12.8V which is 3.8kw power draw but practically it won’t be advisable. My question. Is what size of cable does this user have to be able to do this? 16mm²? 35mm²? 120mm²? |

kristien4: Okay, pls clear my confusion. I have one 100a 51.2v lithium battery max discharge at 100a. Meaning highest i can draw is 5120w. So if i add more 3 batteries to my initial setup, making it 4 batteries in parallel, does the max draw still stay at 5120watts? It'd theoretically double. What exactly are you powering to want to do this? My battery maximum draw is 200A. Don't think I've ever drawn more than 70A from it |
