President Muhammadu Buhari plans to totally remove fuel subsidy, it has emerged. Money saved from this will be used to provide free and compulsory primary/secondary education across the country. This is reported to be part of the recommendations made by the transition committee that helped the president to work out a blueprint for his administration. According to Vanguard, the Buhari-led administration is also planning to unbundle the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to make it more efficient in the production and delivery of products to Nigerians. To ensure the planned removal go as planned, the Labour, which led a strike against a similar move by former president Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, was involved in the decision. “Labour is part of the decision; they have accepted the proposal of fuel subsidy removal,” a source, who is a member of the transition committee, told Vanguard. “A committee is likely to be set up by the federal government to work out the modalities of what is to be done in that respect. “But the truth is that total removal of fuel subsidy has been recommended with adequate provisions for palliatives on free education and social welfare for the unemployed.” Commenting on the planned unbundling of the NNPC, the source said: “The federal government is keen on plugging all areas of leakages in the corporation and whoever must have caused them must be made to account for such unpatriotic wastages. We don’t know whether that is what you call probe or not”. Source |

Military top brass from Nigeria and surrounding countries met on Tuesday to thrash out plans to take on Boko Haram, as new Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari takes early steps aiming to defeat the militants. Chiefs of defence staff from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin were holding talks in Abuja to determine strategies for a new, African Union-backed regional force against the rebels. The long-awaited Multi-National Joint Task Force, which was due to have been operational in November, has its headquarters in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, under a senior Nigerian officer. In the meantime, troops from Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon have been fighting Boko Haram insurgents in northeast Nigeria for several months and have claimed a series of successes. The Nigerian military announced on Monday evening that the chiefs of defence staff meeting was being held in preparation for talks between heads of state and government of all five countries. Buhari, a former army general, has been Nigeria’s president since May 29 and has made ending the six-year insurgency the top priority for his administration. He immediately announced the transfer of the military command centre from Abuja to the strategic city of Maiduguri, in the northeastern rebel stronghold, and visited Niger and Chad to push for continued cooperation. On Sunday, he travelled to the G7 summit of leading industrialised nations to garner further support from world powers on the security threat, including intelligence and training. Buhari’s nascent presidency has however seen an increase in suspected Boko Haram attacks, with 11 recorded since he took the oath of office and at least 93 deaths. source: http://www.buharimeter.ng/post/12 |

President Muhammadu Buhari, has mapped out strategies to recover some stolen loots in the Nigerian oil industry during the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan. Buhari is reportedly using this tactics because his government is short of cash. The government has allegedly stumbled on some illegal deals that were perpetuated by former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke and some Nigerian oil companies as well as oil marketers. Alison-Madueke had reportedly been heavily involved in transferring certain oil wells reclaimed from multinational oil companies to some Nigerian operators she is close to. Already, Buhari’s administration has started retrieving some of the missing monies that disappeared as a result of the deal. A source in Buhari’s government told Sahara Reporters that, one of the Nigerian operators had volunteered to return $500 million to the federal government’s account. Although, the source said the marketer is in possession of $4.5 billion. The government’s strategy is to target oil marketers and companies “caught red-handed in stealing huge sums of oil subsidies and oil revenues.” Some of them have been pressured to repay the stolen monies traced to them. “A number of them have agreed to import massive levels of fuel in lieu of the funds they received in shady transactions during the Jonathan administration,” another source claimed. The government is also said to be putting pressure on Alison-Madueke, but she denied any wrong-doing instead she implicated some officials in the NNPC, and accused them of fraud. “The [Buhari] government got her to write a formal account of her allegations against some NNPC officials and oil companies. What she put down gave a picture of how some of the funds went missing. The document was then forwarded to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the form of a petition,” the source said. Those the former minister implicated in the NNPC include the current General Managing Director (GMD), Haruna Momoh, a former GMD, Austen Oniwon, Reginald Stanley and Sam Okeke, a former Group General Manager, New Business Division of the NNPC. source: http://www.naij.com/458121-marketers-agreed-to-return-funds-presidency-sources.html?pk_campaign=ush |
