DSS INVASION OF FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GIRLS COLLEGE CALABAR AND WHY WE SHOULD ALL LIFT UP OUR VOICES AND WAIL

I got a call in the morning of Thursday, February 2 from Architect Njor Ntangha Tabi, a staff of Federal Government Girls College, Calabar. He sounded agitated, frightened and incoherent. He was trying to say something about DSS, students, teachers, beatings, bullets and gunshots.

I tried calming him down but it wasn't working. Incidentally I was in Calabar for another assignment. I told him I will head out to the school once I was done with my assignment. That didn't happened until hours later.

When I got to the school, it was late in the evening. I met a rattled bunch of teachers, all trying to tell me what happened at the same time. A trained lawyer should know he won't get the gist of what happened in such an excited babble. I just gleaned what I could and scheduled a visit to the scene the following day and a series of interview in a temporary office they agreed to arrange for me.

Friday. 3rd February. I went to the scene and held a series of interview and came face to face with the grandfather of all impunity and the most bizarre thing that ever happened in an academic institution since man started learning how to read and write.

Mr Owai Owai, a Civic Education teacher of over 17 years standing came to class that fateful Thursday morning and found a junior student sweeping the class of the SS3 students when classes was going on in the class of the junior, against the school rules that junior students should not be found sweeping the classes of seniors during school periods.

Mr Owai was able to fish out about 10 seniors who asked the juniors to sweep their class during school period contrary to school regulations. He punished the seniors by flogging them on their palms, 2 strokes of the cane each.

One of the the seniors, Grace Loveth Asuquo, grabbed the teacher by the collar of his shirt, protesting her flogging. The teacher was shocked and gave her more strokes for her action. She told the teacher in front of the students that her parents will burn down the school today and stormed out of the class.

Mr Owai continued teaching, unknown to him that Grace has called her mum, who called her sister that is a DSS operative. Half way through the class, the student's mum, her aunt who is a DSS operative and another man, stormed the class, gestapo-style, took the teacher's canes and flogged him mercilessly before his alarmed students.

When the canes broke from the trashing of hapless Mr Owai, they descended on his frail frame and rained torrents of blows and kicks on him. The screams of the students alerted the teachers who came to the rescue.

Grace's DSS operative aunt called for reinforcement and before you can say "poor education funding", 3 Hilux load of DSS operatives stormed the school.

The operatives went berserk and started shooting sporadically and hitting teachers with anything they could find: blows, kicks, stones, gun butts! Several teachers sustained injuries from the assault and battery.

Some ran into adjoining bushes and farms to save their lives. Some of the teachers started taking pictures and videoing. When the DSS operatives found out, they went after them, forcefully collecting their phones and further brutalising them. Phones, monies, glasses and other valuables were taken away by the operatives.

When they were driving out, they found the gate locked. They beat up the security men and shut the padlock open! They abducted the student, Grace Loveth Asuquo and left the school premises.

The entire staff and students of Federal Government Girls College community are traumatized and frightened. Classes didn't hold on Friday, February 3rd because of this.

When did we get here and how? The DSS, trained, armed and paid with tax payers money; using the arms we bought for them to harass our teachers before our children. What is this?

The management and staff of the school has instructed me to demand the following:

1. A written public apology from DSS published on NTA, Radio Nigeria and 4 national dailies.

2. An oral apology given at the Assembly Ground before staff and students

3. Outright dismissal and prosecution of the operatives involved in this barbaric act.

4. To foot the hospital bills of all staff who sustained injuries during the assault.

5. To return/pay for all lost or damaged items like phones, monies, glasses, etc

6. Replace the damaged school gate

7. Pay a 10 million naira compensation to the school.

I have the further instruction of the staff to file a suit in a court of competent jurisdiction to seek for redress and damages.

We must all wail against the excesses of our law enforcement agents. Their duty is to protect us and not to intimidate us. A formal petition has been lodged with the appropriate authorities. But there is something we can do here: let's stand up and shout against this barbaric intimidation by the DSS, if we don't stand up now, there might be no one left to stand tomorrow.

Esteemed ladies and gentlemen of this great forum. This is a thread to gauge the general feeling of the hardworking, tax paying, responsible citizens of our country. This is my own take.
I work hard everyday to make a living for myself and my family. I pay my taxes to the government of this nation. I fulfil my obligations by obeying all the rules and regulations of this country.

Meanwhile,
Government officials and politicians who are meant to serve me put their needs and desires first before mine. Politicize issues of the economy and security while i now work harder, earn less and spend more to survive. Everyday i am at greater risk of losing my job because of the rapidly decaying economic situation. In all honesty, i have never had it this bad as a Nigerian (i don't even want to start listing the current prices of commodities).

I support the protest against the government of the day because i think enough is enough. Is it a crime to be a citizen of this country?

There is 2 camp today in Nigeria,

1) The first camp has the biggest voice. They believe that we should go back to the status quo meaning to the previous ways and just continue where johna left and we should drop that anti-corruption and change agenda. These people all have interest in a way or another but they will not say it openly. We all know artists like 2face were well fed by politicians and top people who make their money when the country is in chaos. People in this group even travel to London to celebrate a criminal, or dare the whole Nigeria if their man is caught for corruption. This group is mainly the cabals in government, corrupt politicians such as Saraki and Company, and people benefiting from them directly or indirectly.

2) The second group is composed of few politicians and few people in government and business who really believe in change and also part of the people. This people have a little voice ununfortunately but are numbered.Even if they suffer from the precadiment of this country they try to bring constructive criticism which really shows their sincerity to Nigeria. This camp strongly believes in Nigeria's potential. This people are loyal to Buhari only because they believe in his sincerity and want the best for Nigeria.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Friday, February 3, 2017 ordered the remand of Shamsudeen Bala, son of a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed in Kuje prison pending the perfection of his bail terms.

Bala is being prosecuted on a 15-count charge of money laundering to the tune of N1.2 billion by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

He was admitted to bail today in the sum of N100million with two sureties in the sum of N50million each. The sureties must either be a private businessmen or public servant not below the rank of assistant director. The sureties must have landed properties in Abuja or within Lagos metropolis excluding satellite towns.

The defendant must produce three years tax clearance and must not travel without the consent of the court. The defendant must also comply with Section 15 of the ACJA, 2015 or depose to an affidavit in case of delay by the EFCC.

· 23,400 beneficiaries from 13 states receive N100,000 each

The Federal Govern­ment pressed on with its economic empow­erment and pover­ty alleviation programme on Monday, by disbursing loans to 23,400 beneficiaries in 13 states.
Shockingly, none of the beneficiaries came from any of the five states in the South East geopolitical zone. This is not the first time the region is missing in the development and economic packages unveiled by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
When the Federal Govern­ment unveiled a $29.96 billion foreign loan for the provision of infrastructure across the coun­try, none of the projects to be executed with the loan was lo­cated in Igboland.

Similarly, when the gov­ernment recently paid N5,000 monthly stipends to some poor Nigerians under its Social Inter­vention Scheme, all the states in the South East were excluded.
The current loans are be­ing disbursed through the Fed­eral Government’s Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP).
The Presidency, which an­nounced this on Monday, list­ed the benefitting states as Ad­amawa, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Lagos, Osun and Ogun. Others are Oyo, Ondo, Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
It did not give reasons for the obvious omission of states in the South East from the scheme.
The micro-credit scheme, which is a non-interest loan scheme, with only a one-time 5 per cent administrative fee for costs, is targeted at micro-en­terprises: traders, artisans, mar­ket men and women, entrepre­neurs, as well as farmers, with the involvement of cooperatives and executed through the Bank of In­dustry (BOI).
Although over 23,000 people have benefited from the loans al­together, over one million people have already enrolled for the pro­gramme across the country and are expected to benefit this year, said a statement issued by the Of­fice of the Vice-President.
To facilitate the loans’ dis­bursement, four payment provid­ers have been signed-on for the programme mostly in the urban areas. The next wave of payment providers, coming on stream by March 2017, would provide a much wider coverage in the ru­ral areas.
The loans range from N10,000 to N100,000 per appli­cant. While the loans would be paid directly to individuals, the beneficiaries are expected to be­long to registered associations and/or cooperatives as the case may be, to ensure that they are peer-endorsed as credible, and to facilitate timely repayments.
All beneficiaries must have BVNs and bank accounts, said the statement, which further an­nounced that in continuation of the National Homegrown School Feeding Programme, actual feed­ing of pupils is expected to com­mence this week in Ogun and Oyo States, while Ebonyi State will soon follow suit.
“Contrary to insinuations in some quarters and inaccurate re­ports in some sections of the me­dia, there are no payment issues or any kind of food rationing taking place in states where the Homegrown School Feeding Pro­gramme has kicked off.
“While the Federal Govern­ment has paid all approved cooks based on the number of pupils al­located to each cook, it is the State that provides the number of pu­pils to be fed. And where those figures change, the next batch of FG payment would reflect it.
“Specifically, where the num­ber of pupils increase, the State will communicate the increase and approve the review. The numbers of the new pupils are then physically verified, before a commensurate number of cooks are engaged, trained and then paid”, it added.
Also, government has adopt­ed a system of paying the cooks 10 days in advance payment for feeding.
The programme is designed to ensure that no cook feeds more than 150 pupils a day, but in some cases, the numbers are as low as 35 children per cook.
The meal, which must be sufficient and nutritious, is cost­ed around locally sourced items and approved by the State under the N70 per child provision by the Federal Government.
Food quality is monitored at the school level through the head teachers, the Parent Teacher As­sociation (PTA), and the state monitoring teams.

In case you do not know what “one chance” means ,in summary its when you board a vehicle and end up been robbed or kidnapped by the owner of the vehicle or the occupants.

After my dad narrated his ordeal of been robbed and almost thrown over the Third Mainland Bridge, I have always been extra careful,and you should too,except you have taken swimming lessons .

Here are some tips to hep you avoid “one chance” vehicles .

1.Be Careful When Offered A Lift
Especially for the ladies , be careful when offered lifts ,I personally advice ignoring lifts except you know the occupants of the vehicle very well .


2.Be Careful During Odd hours
At certain hours of the day you would be more susceptible to one chance vehicles , especially very early in the morning and very late at night.So be careful.


3.Be Observant
Before you board a vehicle observe the vehicle very well and take note for any suspicious activity or intentions,even though most times its not glaring you still have to be extra observant.

4.Is A Policeman Present ?
A policeman or soldier present in a bus , gives an extra confidence.But I have heard stories where they have been used as camouflage ,so you still have to be careful.But most times its safe.

5.Trust your guts
If you feel uncomfortable ,just trust your instincts and don’t board the vehicle.

6.Avoid All Male Vehicles
An all-male vehicle is a no no.Even though it might not be dangerous ,its better safe than sorry.


7.Be Calm
I know you might be late for that appointment,but its still best you take your time and choose the right bus.Don’t rush.

8.Make Use Of Bus Stops And Parks
Its best to always board vehicles from parks and bus stops ,the buses there are most times registered to an association , so its safer.

9.Always Sit By The Door If you Can
When you eventually choose a bus ,try to always sit close to the entrance.As much as possible avoid buses whose owners or conductors insist you go far inside when there is still space close to the entrance.


10.Always Enter Registered Vehicles

The attention of the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has been drawn to a story circulating in the internet, alleging that the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State is the sponsor of the proposed nationwide protest to be led by 2 Face Idibia, to demand answers from the government over different issues in the country.

It is laughable that the only link between the music star, 2 Face and Senator Akpabio which the authors of the mischievous story belabour to establish is that “in 2013, 2Face and his wife, Annie Macaulay were gifted (sic) two brand new Prado SUVs by this former governor as their wedding gift which they amiably (sic) accepted.”

For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that Senator Akpabio knows nothing about the planned protest neither is he the sponsor. In fact, Senator Akpabio has had no contact whatsoever with 2Face for many years.

According to the information being circulated the organizers of the planned protest have stated clearly that their protest is: “a call for nationwide protests as we say no to the Executive, no to legislatures, no to judiciary.” Is it not idiotic and senseless for anyone to imagine that Senator Akpabio will sponsor a protest against the same arm of government that he is serving as a leader.

As the Minority Leader, Senator Akpabio has consistently maintained that Nigerians should put aside their differences and support every effort that will pull the country out of the present recession. Much as he believes in the right of every Nigerian to express himself, he does not think that mass protest is the solution.

The mischievous attempt to drag the name of Senator Akpabio into the planned protest should be discountenanced as the handiwork of political jobbers.

· A serving CP Rivers State Police command passes on at age of 56 years.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim K. Idris, NPM, mni, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss regrets to announce the demise of a serving Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Police Command who passed on at the age of 56 years after a brief illness at Sterling Hospital Ahmedabad-Gujarat in India.
2. The late Commissioner of Police was enlisted into the Force on the 1st February, 1986 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and rose through the rank. He served as Deputy Commissioner of Police Department of Operations and that of Finance and Administration in Rivers State before he was promoted and posted as Commissioner of Police Rivers State Police Command on the 20th July, 2016, the position he held until his sudden demise on 31st January 2017 after a brief illness at Sterling Hospital Ahmedabad-Gujarat in India.
3. The Inspector General of Police and his management team, on behalf of the entire officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force wishes to commiserate with the ODESANYA family of Ikenne Town, Ogun State, the Government and good people of Ogun State on the demise and passage unto glory of their illustrious son, CP. Francis Mobolaji Odesanya. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace and the good Lord grant his family and the Government and good people of Ogun State the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
4. Meanwhile, a condolence register has been opened at the reception of the Force Headquarters and Rivers State Police Command headquarters, Port Harcourt for the personnel of the Force and members of the public to append their condolence messages. Burial arrangements will be announced after consultation with the family.
