Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to militia operating in Agatu area of the state to surrender themselves to law enforcement agencies or face the consequences of their action. The Governor who received arms and ammunition recovered by the army in Agatu, was reacting to the recent attack on military personnel in the area which led to the killing of a soldier. He described the incident as unacceptable.

Governor Ortom restated the resolve of his administration to assist security agencies in identifying those behind the act to face justice and advised youths still in possession of illegal weapons to surrender such arms to the appropriate authorities.

He sympathized with the Chief of Army Staff over the murder of the soldier, assuring him of the State Government's support and commitment to the ongoing peace process.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Retired Colonel Edwin Jando presented the recovered weapons to the Governor, describing the feat as a result of the resilience of the military personnel deployed to the area.

Meanwhile, the Commander, 707 Special Brigade Forces, Makurdi, Brigadier General Clement Apere has stated that no house was destroyed nor lives lost during the military search operation in Oweto, Agatu local government area.

General Apere who stated this while briefing newsmen to clear the air on the operation, said the exercise was meant to apprehend armed militia who had killed a soldier and made away with his riffle. He maintained that the army obeyed rules of engagement during the operation.

The recovered weapons included two AK47 rifles, two SLR rifles, one fabricated pistol, three locally made pistols, live amunition, police and military kits, some charms and substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

Now i see why you are confused, you don't even know what the reserves are. Look the dollar that is in the reserves are mainly proceeds from oil sale, when the government sell oil and receive dollars they sell the dollars back to the CBN for naira in return which is then distributed as allocations to states and FG, you cannot look at it as money meant for the government because CBN is independent

When the reserves rises, it boost investor confidence and portfolio investors will return to the country in droves. Those dollar requests you mentioned may necessarily not be met by CBN but by other sources in the economy.

We first ran into problem shortly after the election when reserves dropped to dangerous levels and majority of portfolio investors pulled out their funds.

How will investors have confidence if they know that they can't take away their profits because no dollar. No foreign investor will invest because of that, he cant get his money back because he won't be able to change his profit to his own currency, or even get dollars to buy inputs to produce in Nigeria

1. Nigeria is relies on 1 single income earning commodity which is oil.

2. Nigeria doesn't have anything significant to export for forex generation

3. Nigeria is still battling with gross corruption and monumental infrastructure deficit

We have our own unique economic challenges that has no connection with other countries so why compare us with them or even ask us to take the same medicine for our different ailments and situations?


If you are going to go on and on about policies, why don't you just explain to us what the CBN should have done to better the situation instead of the usual baseless complaints with no solution.

First of all Nigeria is not an exception there are other single currency economies. Second we are not saying that the fact that rising reserves is a bad, what I'm saying is that the reserve is rising because CBN does not meet demand and therefore people go to the black market and compete to get forex which pushes the price of dollar. Manufacturers are complaining about not being able to get forex to buy inputs, which makes them buy dollar at black market and pushes prices in the markets and creates inflation, inflation in return eats up the value of money deposits, people that have money in the bank are losing money without even touching the money because of inflation. Don't you follow news, Arik could not pay

Even if the price of oil fell, the job of the CBN at that point was to the proper policies to address what we are goin through. For your info Nigeria is not the only country that suffered from low oil prices, other countries were more competent in dealing with it.

Ok but is aircraft maintenance, jet fuel, raw materials, tuition fees, all nonsense. September last year i was at bank to try and buy forex for an urgent need, i was told cbn had released forex to be sold at cbn rate for people travelling with their visa and flight tickets ready, anyone could buy up to $4,000 but i eventually couldn't buy after 2 days of queing because of crowd. as long as you have visa and ticket you can buy. I asked a guy waiting with me what brought him, he said was just goin on vacation and would buy $4,000 but would spend only small and sell the rest to black market at high rate. What policy is that, people made a lot of money from CBN policy

One man depleted same reserve with greater earning and was termed a hero. Another one increases the same reserve with far lesser earning and is being termed a dullard. Nigerians are too negative.

To me it is not a issue of politics here, it is about exposing the way CBN plays with minds. Understand that all the issues Nigeria is facing today is because of the way the Forex policy was handled by the CBN till today. At a point, according to news, CBN was selling to banks at CBN rate to allocate to their customer but the banks were making profits by selling it back to BDCs at high rates.

Guy, the fact that naira is still falling on the parrallel market means that the CBN has not figured out the main drivers of exchange rate fluctuation in Nigeria. What would make a Nigerian go to the black market and buy 1$ at 500N if he really he doesn't need it, the fact is that those people buying at 500N desperatly need it and CBN policies have not captured them for allocation.

Any government can just hoard the Dollar and say i have incresed dollar during my tenure , but i assure you that by the end of that tenure naira would have been more than doubled.
