Religion / Israel Appoints First-ever Arab Christian Ambassador by MediahelmNGR: 6:32pm On Nov 16, 2018
The predominantly Jewish state of Israel has appointed its first-ever Arab Christian ambassador, the country’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
George Deek will represent Israel in Azerbaijan from summer 2019, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said.
Deek has completed his diplomatic training and has previously worked as deputy ambassador in Nigeria and Norway, the spokesman added.
Deek, 34, was born into an Arab Christian family in Tel Aviv.
He studied international law at Georgetown University in Washington and began working as a lawyer in Israel in 2007.
He is currently an adviser to the director-general of the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem.
According to the ministry’s statement, Deek speaks Hebrew, Arabic, and English fluently and also speaks French.
The ministry spokesman said that Deek’s appointment was a symbol of “the integration of Israelis from different backgrounds into Israel’s representation.”
He also said that Deek was the only Christian working for the Foreign Ministry.
Azerbaijan borders the Caspian Sea and neighbours Russia to the north and Iran to the south.

Celebrities / "If You're Hurt, Speak Up Let The World Hear" - Dabota Lawson Denfend Ehi Ogbebo by MediahelmNGR: 2:55pm On Nov 16, 2018
Ehi Ogbebor has deleted the posts where she called her husband an "occultic beast" after social media users criticized her for bringing her domestic issues online. But Ex-beauty queen, Dabota Lawson, who has been declaring support for Ehi all along, is of the opinion that it is OK to cry out on social media when in pain.
Dabota took to her Instagram account to say that it is better for a person to speak up on social media than to keep quiet and let the world paint a false image about them.
The beauty entrepreneur wrote:

People are saying “ DON’T BRING YOUR MATTER TO ?NSTAGRAM “ . Please go and sit down somewhere . Gone are the days where the media will give you a false identity and you can’t do anything about it .
If you’re hurt , in pain or going through hard times . SPEAK UP, PLEASE SHOUT LET THE WORLD HEAR !!! Don’t go and die for nothing in silence in the name of “ how will it look?” MY ANSWER: It will look how you want it to look or how ‘they’ want it to look if you don’t do something about it .... “
what will people say? “ MY ANSWER : ‘They ‘ will say whatever they want to say regardless, most times not in your favor, so say your own ,.... “ what about tomorrow “ , well honey ,tomorrow is Saturday.. It’s not easy to keep up with each and every person in our lives these days. The economy is tough , no one has time to be looking at your face wondering if you’re happy or not .
Truth is Some people just want to bask in the joy of bad news about you , sis let them know.
It’s unfortunate how even people close to you will never go and defend you publicly, they are seeing , reading , watching you go through it all, yet they do nothing. It’s strangers that will jump on your matter and fight for you publicly . So If you don’t stand for yourself who will

Business / CBN Governor Emefiele Debunks Rumour About Nigeria’s Rice Imports by MediahelmNGR: 1:19pm On Nov 16, 2018
The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has debunked news that Nigeria’s rice import has increased by 400,000 tonnes.
The Cable reports that the CBN governor had in a report, said he read that a United States agency reported that Nigeria’s rice imports had increased by 400,000 tonnes in 2018.
reports gathered that the governor dismissed the report as “false and fake news.”
It was gathered that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects Nigeria would import 400,000 tonnes of rice in 2019, becoming the second largest importer of rice in the world, after just China.
“China and Nigeria are projected to remain the largest rice importing countries in 2019, followed by the EU, Cote d’Ivoire, and Iran,” the USDA report read.
“Nigeria and Egypt are projected to account for the bulk of the 2019 import increase.”
Speaking to this situation at the 2018 Nigeria Investment Conference hosted by the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) society of Nigeria in Lagos, Emefiele, said Nigeria has imported only 25,000 tonnes of rice in 2018, dismissing the projections.
He said: “I was reading a report where the United States said the volume of imports of rice increased by 400,000 tonnes.
“I am not a politician, but people should be very mindful when they open their mouths to say what is untrue because we would come out as central bank to attack it particularly if you use data incorrectly.
“I seize the opportunity to say that it is untrue. The data that we have today shows that rice imported legally into the country is less than 25,000 tonnes in 2018 so far.
“Then how come an agency which has not been to Nigeria or even been to the farms to see what we are doing, just come up and say that Nigeria has imported 400,000 tonnes above what it normally should import?
“Go to the data of countries that export rice, you would see their data; you would find the quantity of rice imported by Nigeria. This is false and fake news.”
The CBN, under the leadership of Godwin Emefiele, has invested heavily into the Anchors Borrowers Programme put in motion in collaboration with the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government.
According to the CBN and the federal government, over N100 billion has been invested into the scheme for the cultivation of rice, wheat, sorghum and many other farm produce.
The CBN says over 800,000 farmers have benefitted directly from the scheme, which has been responsible for a drastic fall in Nigeria’s rice imports.
The bank insisted that not a single dollar has been awarded for the import of rice since 2016.
Meanwhile, source had previously reported that the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, revealed that Nigeria has saved not less than $800 million following the country's decision to cut down its importation of goods like rice, wheat, sugar, tomatoes and milk.

Politics / Sokoto Deputy Governor Resigns by MediahelmNGR: 10:39am On Nov 14, 2018
Indications have emerged that Alhaji Ahmed Sokoto the deputy governor of Sokoto State and the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has resigned from his position.

Sources said he resigned on Tuesday night, Sun reported.

The resignation is long expected as he had fallen out politically since governor Aminu Tambuwal dumped APC for opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Tambuwal who was sure of clinching the presidential ticket of PDP failed in his bid and also could not secure the ticket for re-election in the state.

The deputy governor, is reported to have submitted a copy of his resignation letter to the state’s House of Assembly.

The House decided to make it secret as it was not read on the floor during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The source said the sudden resignation might not be unconnected with unforeseen circumstances that might crop up in the build-up of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The 48-year-old former Commissioner for Health in Sokoto State had his primary school education at Magajin Rafi Model Primary School Sokoto from 1977 – 1983.

His secondary school education was at the Government Secondary School, Yabo where he was from 1983 – 1989 where he obtained his West African School Leaving Certificate.

He proceeded to the College of Administration of the Polytechnic of Sokoto State. He succeeded in obtaining a clerical officer’s certificate (Account and Audit) in 1991.

In the same vein, Ahmed Aliyu went back to the same institution between 1991 – 1992 where he obtained a certificate in Accounts and Audit (CPAA).

Ahmed Aliyu’s thirst for knowledge galvanized him to yet to back to the same polytechnic of Sokoto State between 1992 – 1994 where he obtained a Professional Diploma in Public Account and Audit (DPAA).

He was at the Abdu Gusau Polytechnic Talata Marafa in Zamfara State, from 1995 – 1997, where he successfully studied for and obtained a Higher National Diploma in Local Government Studies.

As an enterprising individual, Ahmed Aliyu was still yearning for more education, that was why he got admitted into the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto from 2000 – 2001 where he obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in management (PGDM).

Ahmed Aliyu again went back to the same Ivory Tower between 2002 – 2003 where he successfully crowned his search for knowledge with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA).

Crime / I'm Tired Of Eating Human Flesh - Cannibal Says As He Walks Into Police Station by MediahelmNGR: 10:20am On Nov 14, 2018
A cannibal who walked in a police station holding a human leg told cops, "I’m tired of eating human flesh", a court heard yesterday.

Nino Mbatha, 33, is said to have handed in part of a human leg and a hand to police at the station. This development led to an investigation that uncovered more remains in a nearby house.

Officers were then led to a woman’s mutilated body under some rocks in Estcourt, South Africa.

Mbatha, Lungisani Magubane, 31, and Khayelihle Lamula, 33, have been charged with the murder of 24-year-old mum Zanele Hlatshwayo.

Mbatha, who is also said to be a traditional healer, has also been charged with "handling human tissue".

Prosecutors say Magubane and Lamula went to Mbatha for a good luck charm and he told them the ancestors insisted that blood needed to be spilled.

Lamula then found Zanele drunk and she agreed to get into his car, unaware that he planned to use her for rituals. The Pietermaritzburg High Court heard that Lamula then picked up Magubane and Mbatha and drove them all to a secluded spot where Mbatha killed the mum and ate parts of her body.

All three suspects have pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The woman’s body was found in August 2017 after one of the suspects reportedly led community members and police to where it was hidden. Police spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbheke said the suspects were arrested after Mbatha walked into the Estcourt station with the human leg.

She said:

When he was questioned, he produced part of a human leg and a hand. Further investigation led police to a house where they were met with a foul smell, and more human remains were found.

A second suspect was also arrested in Estcourt and a third in the Amangwe area. More body parts were found.

A fourth suspect Sithembiso Sithole, 31 was arrested and charged, but reportedly killed himself in jail awaiting trial.

The Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘C’ of the Nigeria Customs Service in Owerri, Imo State, has intercepted and seized a truck allegedly carrying illegal and dangerous items whose Duty Paid Value was put at N9,620,000.

Education / Hijab Now Allowed In Lagos Public Schools by MediahelmNGR: 8:27pm On Nov 13, 2018
Female Muslim students can now use hijab in public schools in Lagos State, according a circular by the state’s area unit of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN).

A Lagos high court had in October 2014, ruled against the use of hijabs in schools, but the judgement was later upturned by an appeal court in July 2016.

Unhappy with the verdict, the state government took the case to the supreme court. It subsequently placed a ban on the use of hijab in August, 2018.

However, in a new circular, the state government asked that status quo be maintained in order to avoid contempt of court. It however said the hijab must be “short, smart, neat and in the same colour of the uniform (skirt).

Foreign Affairs / China Unleashes Drones Fitted With AK-47 Rifles by MediahelmNGR: 12:46pm On Nov 09, 2018
China is unleashing stealth drones and pilotless aircraft fitted with AK-47 rifles onto world markets, racing to catch up to US technology and adding to a fleet that has already seen combat action in the Middle East.
Combat drones were among the jet fighters, missiles and other military hardware shown off this week at Airshow China, the country’s biggest aerospace industry exhibition.
A delta-winged stealth drone received much attention, highlighting China’s growing production of sophisticated unmanned aerial vehicles seeking to compete with the US military’s massive fleet.
The CH-7 — a charcoal-grey UAV unveiled at the air show — is the length of a tennis court with a 22-metre (72-feet) wingspan. It can fly at more than 800 kilometres (500 miles) per hour and at an altitude of 13,000 metres (42,650 feet).

“We are convinced that with this product clients will quickly contact us,” said Shi Wen, chief engineer of the Caihong (Rainbow) series drones at state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp (CASC).
The CH-7’s maiden flight is slated for late next year.
CASC has clients in around 10 countries, Shi told AFP, while declining to name them.
“Some things remain sensitive,” he said.
China’s drones are now flying in the Middle East, as Beijing has fewer qualms than the United States when it comes to selling its military UAVs to other nations.
The Iraqi army has used CASC’s CH-4 drone to conduct at least 260 strikes against the Islamic State group, Chinese media reported earlier this year.
In Yemen, where a civil war has sparked what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, the United Arab Emirates military has reportedly targeted a Shiite rebel chief with a Chinese-made drone.
“The Chinese have produced an enormous range of drones, and this seems to be an area that they expect to make great progress,” said Steve Tsang, director of the China Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London.
“The export and deployment of them should enable them to improve on design as they get tested in a real combat environment,” Tsang said.
The United States has plenty of lethal drones, but it has had restrictions on exporting them out of concern that the technology could be copied or used against its own troops.
Some of those restrictions were lifted in April for US allies, with President Donald Trump’s administration citing competition from Chinese “knockoffs”, but even a solid ally such as Jordan has not been able to buy US drones.
The US rules gave Beijing the opportunity to fill the void and sell its drones to other countries, but China’s “competitive” prices also helped, said James Char, an expert on the Chinese military at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.
China has exported its armed UAVs to countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Char said.
At the Zhuhai air show, Chinese drone makers are rubbing their hands at the business opportunities.
“Security is a real problem in the Middle East. There’s a real need for military drones over there,” said Wu Xiaozhen, overseas project director at a company named Ziyan.
At the company’s stand, Wu handed out a brochure showing its star product: the Blowfish A2, a 62-centimetre (24-inch) tall helicopter drone with Kevlar armour.
“We can add an AK-47 or a machine gun. Different weapons can be installed, whatever the customer wants,” she told AFP.
Abu Dhabi is already a customer while Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are in discussions with the company to acquire the drone.
“We are targeting Western markets, too. Our product is of great quality,” she said. “We don’t fear competition from the Europeans and the Americans.”

Politics / 'if Buhari Wins, Nigerians Will Be Running To Neighboring Countries To Feed - Fa by MediahelmNGR: 7:20am On Nov 09, 2018
The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose says Nigerians will be running to other neighboring countries to feed if President Buhari wins a second term in office come 2019.

According to the former Governor, "the President’s time is almost up". A statement by Fayose's media aide, Lere Olayinka, accused the president of spending "three and a half years blaming his predecessors and inflicting both security and economic crises on the country".
The statement read: “when he was seeking the votes of Nigerians, he never said he was coming to complain. Rather, he promised to fix what he claimed to have identified as the problems.
It is no longer funny that a President who assumed office three and a half years ago is still complaining about how he met the country, instead of Nigerians having feelings of how well he has solved the problems he claimed that he had the capacity to solve.
He should stop singing the same song of lamentation that he has been singing since 2015 and learn from his colleague in Ghana, who hit the ground running immediately he assumed office. Only a leader who lacks competence and is challenged by knowledge and exposure will blame his predecessors for over three years.
Nigerians of mostly below forty years who voted for the President in 2015, did so because they never experienced him as a Military Head of State. Now that they have seen that he does not have the required capacity to govern a country like Nigeria, they are eager to vote him out.”

The former Governor charged leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to "put everything into the 2019 elections, so as to rescue Nigerians from the present state of anguish occasioned by the directionless All Progressives Congress (APC) government".

He continued: “Today, Nigeria has become the ‘Poverty Capital’ of the world. God forbid, a Buhari’s second term will turn Nigeria to a republic of poverty where people will be running to other neighboring countries to feed. PDP must therefore work very hard to save the country from going down completely."

Politics / President Buhari Commends African Parliamentary Union (video) by MediahelmNGR: 11:05pm On Nov 08, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the African Parliamentary Union (APU) for promoting democratic culture and human rights in Africa.
The president made the commendation at the opening of the 41st Conference of Speakers of the National Parliaments of the African Parliamentary Union on Thursday in Abuja.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIwxjxMLXNU

Buhari also commended APU for choosing to look at the issues of terrorism and organised crimes in Africa.
“Since its foundation, the African Parliamentary Union has continued to champion the objective of bringing African Parliaments together to join the challenge of finding solutions to the many problems confronting the continent.
“And at the same time helping to develop parliamentary practice in the continent toward the promotion of democracy, human rights, freedoms and the realisation of the objectives of the African Union to achieve durable peace.
“I am delighted that the 41st Conference of Speakers, as part of its meeting, will be considering the role of parliaments in the fight against terrorism, armed gangs and organised crimes in Africa.
“Terrorism, armed banditry and organised crimes have continued to be a security challenge for member states of the African Union.
“The proliferation of arms aided by abuse of the ease of movement of persons across freer borders, which have been historically in place to encourage African unity, have contributed to acts of terrorism by groups like Al Shaabab, ISIS and Boko Haram.”
According to the president, Nigeria has done a lot in tackling the menace of Boko Haram and the country is still working hard to address other security challenges.
The president, however, noted that the terrorists had resort to ransacking villages and small farming communities for survival.
He said: “Here in Nigeria, we have done a lot to reverse the terror trend and halt the advancement of Boko Haram.
“We have, in collaboration with our neighbours, strengthened our armed forces to effectively confront terror groups and have also initiated programmes to address widespread poverty, which has been identified as a significant factor fuelling unrest and boosting terror recruitments.
“In spite of this progress, we are not unmindful of the remaining challenge of armed invaders who ransack villages and small farming communities and commit terrible acts including the cold-blooded murder of women and children.
“We are also making progress in addressing this challenge.’’
He, therefore, commended the efforts of African governments in dealing with terrorists groups and advised the APU to develop strategies that would help Africa completely destroy the monster of terrorism.
“While I commend the actions of African governments in dealing with these evil groups, it is my strong belief that the APU will develop strategies to assist governments in confronting this menace,’’ he added.
Buhari pledged that as Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), he would fast-track the APU’s resolutions for deliberation and adoption at the ECOWAS sub-region and the much larger African Union.
On the recently concluded Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in China, the president noted that many trade and cooperation agreements running into hundreds of billions of dollars were signed between China and individual African countries.
He expressed hope that the agreements would hasten the efficiency of the business and investment climate in Africa.
“I am pleased that the Conference of Speakers will also consider the promotion of private investment.
“The dynamics of global trade are changing fast; Foreign Direct Investments are a key index of economic performance,’’ he said.
The President reiterated his call on African countries to look into ways of improving their economies.
“As the global economic superpowers redesign and restructure the global economy, Africa cannot afford to be caught off guard.
“We have to navigate these uncertain economic times with realistic plans in which the private sector is key.
“Barriers that restrict ease of doing business and private sector growth must be addressed by legislation and it is hoped that your resolutions will aid the efforts of African governments in developing a more robust private sector to attract necessary investments in our economies.’’
He also praised the decision of the APU to critically look at the issue of girl-child education and early marriage, which had affected many girls in Africa.
“I am also delighted that the promotion of girls’ education as a way to address early marriages will be the focus of the APU Committee of women parliamentarians.
“This is another subject that requires close attention and I assure you of the support and cooperation of the government of Nigeria.
“A few months back, four girls from a high school in Anambra State, in South East Nigeria, won the first prize for innovation at an international competition held in the United States of America.
“The success of these girls, some as young as 14, is a success for Africa as a whole, but more importantly, it is a demonstration of what can happen when the girl-child is given opportunity,’’ he said.
According to him, education should not be seen as a government programme only, but as a human right, a social imperative and educating girls increase the probability of having more women innovators, entrepreneurs and chief executive officers.
He, therefore, assured the APU of the desire of the government of Nigeria and others to consider the union’s input on this subject with a view to improve the condition of the African girl-child.
In his remarks, President of APU, Senate President Bukola Saraki, stressed the need to share ideas and to device new strategies of address challenges facing the continent.
Saraki also urged African Parliamentarians to support the Executive arm of government with strong legislations that would uplift the standard of living of the people. (NAN)

The United States is now the world’s biggest crude oil producer, pushing Russia and Saudi Arabia to the back seat.

In the week ending November, the U.S. crude production hit a whopping 11.6 million bpd, according to Energy Information Administration (EIA) data released on Wednesday.

That’s a threefold increase from the U.S. low reached a decade ago, and a 22.2 percent rise just this year. It makes the United States the world’s biggest producer of crude.

Russia pumps an average of 10.8million bpd and Saudi Arabia, about 10.5million bpd.

More U.S. oil will likely come. The EIA expects output to break through 12 million bpd by mid-2019, largely thanks to a surge in shale oil production.

The record US production has been a moderating factor of oil prices, although oil got a bump on Thursday after record Chinese crude imports eased concerns that a slowdown in the world’s No.2 economy could stoke an emerging fuel glut.

However, oil markets were held back somewhat after the United States became the world’s top crude producer as its output hit record levels.

Front-month Brent crude oil futures were at $72.27 a barrel at 0800 GMT, up 21 cents, or 0.3 percent, from their last close.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $61.95 per barrel, up 28 cents, or 0.4 percent, from their previous settlement.

China’s October crude imports surged 32 percent from a year earlier to 40.80 million tonnes, or 9.61 million barrels per day (bpd), data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Thursday, climbing from 9.05 million bpd in September. The previous daily record of 9.6 million bpd was touched in April 2018.

Imports rose 8.1 percent for the first 10 months of the year from the same period last year to 377.16 million tonnes, or 9.06 million bpd, on track for another record year of shipments.

“Crude oil imports rose … as uncertainty around tariffs on U.S. imports and sanctions on Iran eased,” said ANZ bank following the data release.
“We also saw demand from China’s independent refineries rise,” it added.

Meanwhile, U.S. crude inventories rose by 5.8 million barrels in the week ending Nov. 2, to 431.79 million barrels, the EIA said..

Production has not just risen in the United States, but also in many other countries, including Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Brazil, stoking producer concerns of a return of oversupply that depressed oil prices between 2014 and 2017.

With output overall rising, supply is ample despite the Iran sanctions now in place, prompting rumblings within the Middle East dominated Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) that renewed supply cuts may be needed next year to prevent a glut.
“OPEC and Russia may use cuts to support $70 per barrel,” said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank.

A US based woman identified as Shawn Rene has accused Nigerian popstar, Runtown and his brother of fraud.

According to her, 'I wrote him two checks in two companies name, $32,000 and $107,000, after he got the checks and cashed he started saying stories, later on he started saying they would pay after runtown’s show in Canada, I and my fiancée couldn’t have it because, we never invested on anyone’s music, I even had to come down to Kenya just to be certain my fiancée wasn’t involved, and even arrested the Alex, and after investigations and all we found out it was jack, his brother and wife trying to play a fast one on us, his wife claimed they had the money returned to me, which I also have the record of'.

She went on to say, 'I and my fiancée has used over $18,000 for both legal fees tickets and hotel bills already, he had to even travel to Nigeria to make a report also. This past months I have been dealing with cancer and chemo and catching flights from Texas to New York regularly just as result of my fiancée trusting his fellow country man so much. I gave this people $107,000 and they only paid $150000 to my fiancée. Above was when jack got the check, and also a 3 way call with him Alex and my fiancée'.

We however reached out to Runtown's management who said its a blackmail attempt and the Nigeian security agencies have been notified. According to them,

'
Its all lies, We have contacted the Nigerian security agencies, DSS and EFCC who are all on the matter at the moment. Runtown has never and will never defraud anyone'.
