THE Court of Appeal in Lagos, at the weekend, affirmed the judgment of a Federal High Court in the state convicting and sentencing three Boko Haram members to 25 years imprisonment each. The Appeal Court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Y. B. Nimpar, rejected the appeal filed by the convicts and upheld the judgment of the federal court. Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos had, on September 30, 2014, handed down the verdict after the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Justice, successfully prosecuted the terrorists before the court. The state government had filed charges against four accused persons for conspiracy to commit a felony to wit: acts of terrorism, concealing information about acts of terrorism and being in possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition contrary to various sections of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the Firearms Act, Cap F.28 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. Out of the four persons charged, three were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each, while the fourth accused was discharged and acquitted. Those convicted and sentenced were Ali Mohammed Modu, Adamu Ali Karumi and Ibrahim Usman Ali. Dissatisfied with the verdict, the convicts through their lawyer had approached the Appeal Court in Lagos asking that the verdict be upturned on the grounds that they were charged under inapplicable laws, and that the 25-year-jail term was excessive. http://medianaija.com.ng/court-of-appeal-upheld-25-years-imprisonment-for-boko-haram-convicts/ |
GOVERNOR Kashim Shettima has attributed the main reason why a nine year-old girl rescued from Boko Haram would want to return to her ‘husband’ to excessive indoctrination. One of the 64 hostages released from Boko Haram hideouts in Sambisa forest repeatedly cried last week to return to her ‘hubby’ in the Boko Haram enclave during handing over of the hostages by the military to the state governor. The governor described the development as sad. “Imagine a small girl who is just nine years old crying to return to her Boko Haram husband in the bush to continue with the life of terrorists. This clearly shows the insurgents have been indoctrinating their captives and hostages,” the governor said weekend at Dikwa during a visit to officers and soldiers of the 22 Brigade of the Nigerian Army. He said Boko Haram have abducted many people especially boys and girls and indoctrinate them in ways that they become unwilling even in accepting freedom. He urged troops not to relent, adding that the government and people of the state appreciated the sacrifices being made by the military troops, not only in securing communities previously held by Boko Haram but trailing the insurgents to their hideouts. http://medianaija.com.ng/9-year-old-girl-cries-she-wants-to-return-to-her-boko-haram-husband/ |

Nigeria’s military has opened a camp to rehabilitate Boko Haram fighters who have surrendered and are repentant, according to a statement Wednesday that urged other fighters to abandon the Islamic insurgency that has claimed 20,000 lives in six years. The military also said it has rescued 11,595 civilian hostages in attacks on Boko Haram camps and villages in the northeast of the West African nation since Feb. 26. The rehabilitation camp will provide vocational training to help former fighters contribute meaningfully to economic growth, Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar said in a statement. He gave few details and did not say how many fighters have surrendered. Previous statements said dozens of Boko Haram members have given themselves up this year and that many appeared emaciated and begged for food. That would indicate that the military is succeeding in cutting supply routes of the insurgency that has spread to neighboring countries. Abubakar’s statement appealed for other fighters to surrender and warned “the final onslaught against the remnant group of the terrorists would continue unabated and would not relent until the power of evil forces in the northeast is completely neutralized.” http://gistportal.com.ng/nigeria-opens-rehabilitation-camp-for-former-boko-haram-members/ |
