The Department of State Security (DSS) has disclosed that its mop-up operations aimed at degrading the capabilities of hoodlums, kidnappers and Boko Haram terrorists have led to the arrest of the kidnappers of two German nationals in Kaduna and a fleeing Boko Haram fighter with an AK-47 rifle in Ekiti State. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Tony Opuiyo, the DSS stated that it arrested over 20 members of the Boko Haram group, including those planning to unleash kidnapping, terror and robbery attacks on Abuja and its environs. Opuiyo said, “Recent operations carried out by the DSS in various parts of the country have significantly degraded capabilities of hoodlums, especially kidnappers and terrorists, whose activities have continually threatened the peace. “For instance, on March 20, 2017, a suspected Boko Haram kingpin, Adenoyi Abdulsalam, was arrested in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, by a joint military/DSS operation team. An AK-47 rifle was recovered from the suspect, who is presently undergoing investigation. “Abdulsalam was in the final stages of kidnapping some high level targets in Ekiti, not only to raise funds but also to terrorise communities in the state. Prior to this arrest, several other Boko Haram suspects had been apprehended in various parts of northern Nigeria, especially the states of Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Kogi. “Typical cases of arrest include that of 29-year-old Boko Haram member, Usman Ladan Rawa (aka Mr. X), on March 17, 2017 at Lafia, Nasarawa State. Rawa was discovered to have rented accommodation at Lafia for Abdullahi Isa, known for his notorious terrorist actions. Gist Box |

Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has said it will not allow any pro-President Muhammadu Buhari rally in any part of Igboland. The warning came barely hours to a planned march for the president by a group in Awka, Anambra State tomorrow. In a statement issued yesterday by MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, the group urged the organisers of the rally to shelve the idea of meet stiff resistance. It frowned at what it called a “secret plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to hire and import Hausa Fulani people to stage a pro-President Buhari rally in Awka on Friday.” Questioning the rationale for such a rally in Igboland, the statement said: “MASSOB warns that such rally will not hold anywhere in Biafra land’’. “Is this the reason why some Igbo politicians are driving their way into APC that has no interest of Igbo. We will never allow you to bring reproach and political disgrace to Igbo land. “What is the significance of the APC rally in Igbo land? Does Igbo have any love or likeness for Buhari and APC? Why must such rally be planned to be held in Ojukwu’s home state? http://gistbox.com.ng/massob-probuhari-march-igboland/ |

Factional leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Uchenna Madu, said the group has vacated its headquarters, Freedom House in Okwe, Imo State and closed down all other camps as part of its internal reorganisation for strategic growth. He also said in the spirit of Biafra brotherhood, the group had forgiven its founder, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike and that he was now free to return to his father’s compound in Okwe which is the headquarters of the pro Biafra movement. This was just as the movement noted that Uwazuruike’s expulsion and three years exile from his father’s compound which houses the MASSOB headquarters was enough punishment for trying to derail the Biafra cause. In a statement by Samuel Edeson, national director of information, yesterday, said MASSOB, under the leadership of Madu had forgiven its former leader, Uwazuruike. According to him, the decision to vacate MASSOB headquarters at Okwe and to close down all other camps was taken after the meeting of the national leadership of the movement under Madu. He said the movement would continue with its non-violent agitation until the independent state of Biafra is actualised. |

Some Nigerians in the U.S. have expressed concerns over the controversial Executive Order expected to be rolled out this week by President Donald Trump to restrict citizens from certain countries and also put in place stringent measures against all categories of undocumented immigrants. Nigerians voiced out their concerns during teleconferences organized to equip them with information about the travel ban, to also allay their fears and enlighten them on what to do to avoid falling into President Trump’s immigration trap. The information sessions, which held twice on Saturday, were organized by two influential Nigerian groups in the U.S., namely the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians and the Nigerian Lawyers Association. Some of the concerns raised by the Nigerians included those who have overstayed in the U.S. and were yet to perfect their documentations, and those with different names on their documents due to marriage, divorce or other reasons. Others were those who have permanent residency, conditional permanent residency, criminal records and those who have money in banks, investments or property, should they be deported under the new immigration policy. http://gistbox.com.ng/nigerians-in-united-states-prepare-for-new-immigration-control/ |
president Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa has dropped hints that Nigeria may consider reprisal over renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. Dabiri-Erewa said the country’s patience was being tried with the renewed attacks and has also called on the African Union (AU), to prevail on the South African government, to “take decisive and definitive measures to protect Nigerian citizens and other Africans within that country’s borders.” In a statement, yesterday, the presidential aide decried the renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. Dabiri-Erewa said the Nigerian community in South Africa, led by Ikechukwu Anyene, has confirmed the attacks and looting of Nigerian-owned businesses in Pretoria West on Saturday. She quoted Anyene as saying that the union had reported the incident to the Nigeria mission and South African police. “As we speak, five buildings with Nigerian businesses, including a church, have been looted and burned by South Africans”. She said the attention of the AU was being called upon to intervene because there is credible information that more xenophobic attacks against foreigners will take place between February 22 and 23, 2017. http://mediamatters.com.ng/fg-warns-south-africa-over-xenophobic-attacks-on-nigerians/ |
Amnesty International (AI) has reported that a total of 240 people, including children and babies, died in military cells in Maiduguri, Borno State in 2016. Also, it said a military clampdown on agitators for Biafra resulted in 177 deaths in the South-east last year. In its 2016/17 report released yesterday, the group said mass arrests of people fleeing Boko Haram led to overcrowding in military detention facilities. “The report said: “At the military detention facility at Giwa barracks, Maiduguri, cells were overcrowded. Diseases, dehydration and starvation was rife. At least, 240 detainees died during the year. “Bodies were secretly buried in Maiduguri’s cemetery by the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency staff. Among the dead were, at least, 29 children and babies, aged between newborn and five years.” On the military’s action against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the report said the group lost over 177 members between January and February 2016. http://gistbox.com.ng/amnesty-report-240-persons-die-including-children-military-cells/ |
