The Minister of Water resources Mrs. Serah Ochekpe has raised alarm of an imminent flood and urged people living at flood prone areas, especially Jebba, Shiroro and Kainji in Niger State to move away to avoid repeat of 2012 flooding. Ochekpe raised the alarm yesterday in Abuja during a stakeholders, meeting on flood warning. She said the essence of the meeting was to sensitise the general public with a particular reference to people living around Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba. The Minister said following the alert received from the Transmission Company of Nigeria on the potential threat of flooding of the Kainji, Shiroro, and Jebba Dams, the ministry has taken measure to bring all the stakeholders together. She explained that the overflow of these dams could cause serious flooding in Niger, Kogi, and Kwara States. “It is pertinent to note that we cannot afford to make the same mistake we made last year, where the flood caught us unprepared. To avoid this, people living close to flood prone areas, as a matter of urgency, should leave now before it is too late. "We are calling on the media to help disseminate this message in a manner that will not create panic to the people, but would ginger them to move to a safer place, she said." “This meeting will therefore be able to address the issue from our different perspectives and come up with an implementable strategy for plan of action to sensitise the communities in the flood plains of the reservoirs of the Kainji, Shiroro and Jebba Dams within the cooperative framework of management of floods as part of our Inter-ministerial Emergency Preparedness for 2013 flood and Rainfall Prediction” Ochekpe further said that the stakeholders would put in place advocacy and sensitization programme on flood, using communication experts to visit the area to educate them on the need to move away from the flood areas. It should be recall that during the construction of Jebba, Shiroro, and Kainji dams communities living there were relocated far away from the Dams site but gradually the communities move closer to the dams site and face threat of flood if the dam over flow. In his remarks the General Manager, Transmission Company of Nigeria Mr. Ciroma Joseph said the ongoing rehabilitation of Jebba Spillway channel funded by the World Bank under Niger Basin Water Resources Development and sustainable Eco system Programme requires that the spillway gates would not be operated until full execution of the rehabilitation works. He added that considering the current advance stage of the work, spillway operation for flood management at this stage will damage and wash away all the works so far accomplished. However, he said the use of spillway gates may become unavoidable under emergencies where higher magnitude inflow beyond the capacities of alternatives discharge facilities The Minister while commending the stakeholders for the timely response to the invitation, called on the media to ensure objective report and help in carrying awareness of the flood challenges to Nigerians. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) views with deep concern and discontent the ongoing and indeed a recurring strike in our nation’s ivory towers by the Academic Staff Unions of our Universities (ASUU) which has entered its 9th week without any sign of being resolved soon as parties in the crisis continue to trade blame and spoil for more actions on the matter. We have watched with keen interest as the Dr. Nasir Issa Faggie-led ASUU declared a 3-day warning strike before it finally embarked on an indefinite strike action on July 1, 2013 towards ensuring that the Federal Government honoured the cardinal agreements reached with the University lecturers since 2009. According to ASUU, those agreements include: - •Injection of proper funds to revitalize the Nigerian Universities •Provision of Federal Government’s Assistance to state universities •Progressive increase of annual budgetary allocation to education to 26% between 2009 and 2020, and Earned Allowances, Amendment and the Pension Retirement age of academics on the profession cadre from 65 to 70 years •Establishment of the Pension Fund Administrator Governing Council •Transfer of Federal Government’s landed properties to universities as the setting up of research and development units by companies operating in Nigeria as well as teaching and research equipment. In essence, ASUU is simply asking the Federal Government for proper funding of the universities to bring them to the level to compete with world acclaimed and prestigious ones which the University of Ibadan (UI), the premier University once attained as one of the 10 best Universities in the world. While the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Pius Anyim led Government Team is insisting that Government cannot afford full adherence to those agreements, ASUU is insisting it cannot shift ground on any of the already agreed issues since according to it, necessary concessions were granted before those Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) were reached with the Federal Government in 2009. Though President Jonathan may not be the President then, since government is a continuum, the administration is duty bound to implement the signed agreements as he was also the second in command. Against all the stated backdrop and considering the enormous toll incessant strikes have had on the nation’s university education system, which to say the least, has made the country’s best University today to rank only amongst the hinds 6,000 in the world while most of our graduates are simply ‘unemployable’, the nation’s scarce resources are routinely frittered away through unabated sleaze and in the face of endemic corruption at all levels of governance. PENGASSAN joins millions of concerned Nigerians and groups to appeal to Suswam led Committee to sheath their sword by embracing dialogue as a means of finding a lasting solution to the recurring problem of under funding of the nation’s education. This is so as education remains a major plank for sustainable development and veritable means of rediscovering the dream of the founding fathers of the nation. More worrisome for the majority of the talented youths whose sponsored can not afford a private or foreign school, and have rested all hope in the public schools now imagine the kind of future generation they are bound to build as they are turned out half-baked as a result of irregular and sandwiched session and curriculum. PENGASSAN cannot but frowns at the degenerating Government habit of reneging on Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) freely entered into. While Government feigns to be contending with financial challenges over ASUU’ demans. We strongly advise Government to refocus the nation’s budget and expenditures to priorities areas which education stands out by using this strike events to declare a State of Emergency in the Education Sector with a view to finally securing it for better rewarding future of our youths. NEWS Nigerian to Face Trial in US for Supporting Terrorism 29 Aug 2013 Font Size: a / A Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN) • Court orders suspect’s extradition Tobi Soniyi and Damilola Oyedele in Abuja A Federal Court in Brooklyn, New York, the United States has indicted a Nigerian, Mr. Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi (also known as "Abdullah” and “Ayatollah Mustapha" for providing material support to Al-Qaeda, which is a designated foreign terrorist organisation.Babafemi, 32, from Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, faces a minimum of 10 years in prison if convicted. He was based in the US before he fled to Nigeria in 2012 after he realised that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was on his tail. He was however arrested by Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) and arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja in July 2012, based on Washington’s request for his extradition. The local court yesterday gave the federal government the nod to extradite Babafemi to the US for trial. The suspect is alleged to have received the equivalent of N1 million from Al-Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to facilitate the recruitment and transportation of prospective members to Yemen. According to a statement yesterday by the Office of the US Attorney, Mr. Robert Nardoza, the charges in the indictment are mere allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The statement made available by the US Embassy in Abuja said: “According to court documents, between approximately January 2010 and August 2011, the defendant travelled twice from Nigeria to Yemen to meet and train with leaders of AQAP, the Yemen-based branch of al-Qaeda. Babafemi assisted in AQAP’s English-language media operations, which include the publication of the magazine 'Inspire'. “At the direction of the now deceased senior AQAP commander Anwar al-Aulaqi, Babafemi was provided by AQAP leadership with the equivalent of almost $9,000 in cash to recruit other English-speakers from Nigeria to join that group. While in Yemen, Babafemi also received weapons training from AQAP.” The statement said the government’s case would be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Zainab Ahmad and Hilary Jager, with assistance from Trial Attorney William M. Narus of the Justice Department’s Counter-terrorism Section and Trial Attorney Timothy Hammer of the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs. However, the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday set the stage for Babafemi’s trial when it ordered the federal government to extradite him to the US. Justice Ahmed Mohammed made the order while ruling on an application by the government to hand over Babafemi to the US. Counsel to the respondent, Olorun Ajeh, did not contest the application. The suspect also told Justice Mohammed that he had no objection to being extradited. In his ruling, Justice Mohammed said: "The respondent, Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi, aka Abdullah Ayatollah Mustapher, is not contesting these proceedings which are meant to extradite him to the United States of America. "The respondent's solicitor only urged the court to take into account the fact that the respondent has been in the custody of State Security Service for over 24 calendar months that the respondent has cooperated with the local authorities in Nigeria. "Since there is no form of any objection by the respondent, Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi aka Abdullah Ayatollah Mustapher, to the application for his extradition, this court is satisfied that the application by the attorney general for the extradition of the respondent to the United States of America is proper and in accordance with the Extradition Act, 2004. "An order is hereby made that the respondent in this case, Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi aka Abdullah Ayatollah, be extradited to the United States of America to face the indictment against him. "It is also ordered that the respondent, Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi aka Abdullah Ayatollah, shall be surrendered to the officials of the United States of America not later than 15 days from the order of this court. "The respondent shall remain in the custody of the State Security Service of the federation pending his surrender and eventual extradition to the United States of America." In the application for his extradition filed before the court, counsel to the government exhibited a four-count charge marked:13CR-109-JG, filed against him before the United States District Court of the Eastern District of New York and a bench warrant issued for his arrest by a US magistrate. He was charged with "conspiracy to provide support to a foreign terrorist organisation, provision and attempted provision of material support to a foreign terrorist organisation, unlawful use of firearms and conspiracy to unlawfully use firearms". The Brazilian, who had been expected to join Tottenham, has signed a five-year contract with Jose Mourinho's side. A product of the Corinthians youth academy, the 25-year-old moved to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in August 2007 before moving to Russia with Anzhi in January, following some eye-catching performances in the Champions League. "I'm very happy to be here, it's been a dream of mine to come and play here," Willian told the club's official website. "Chelsea are one of the best clubs in the world, and now I'm going to play for one of the best managers in the world, so I'm very happy and looking forward to it." Willian has not been named in the squad for Friday's Uefa Super Cup encounter with Bayern Munich in Prague, and in turn will not have the opportunity to make his debut until after the international break, on September 14 against Everton. The Brazil international is believed to have cost Roman Abramovich's side in the region of £30 million.

Malawi FA broke ahead of crunch World Cup qualifier against Nigeria The Flames may be unable to raise the needed funds for their trip to Calabar in time to face the Super Eagles on September 7 having used up the bulk of their annual budget By Lolade Adewuyi Aug 28, 2013 1:32:00 PM Malawi players Robert N’gambi & Robin Ngalande Malawi might be unable to prosecute their final Group F 2014 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria on September 7 due to shortfall in funding. The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) told media on Thursday that the Flames require about $121, 212 to travel to Nigeria. FAM had spent most of its annual allocation on participating in the regional Cosafa Cup held in Zambia as well as World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia. “We don’t have the required amount of money. Government has indicated the funds that were used during World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia were part of the 2013/14 national budget,” FAM general secretary Suzyo Nyirenda was quoted by Nyasatimes.com. “We were not aware of this arrangement, we have been taken unaware because, to us, expenses that were incurred prior and after Kenya and Namibia games were settled by funds within the 2012/13 financial year which ended on June 31, 2013.” This unavailability of funds means the Flames will be unable to camp for four days in Botswana where they had been scheduled to play a friendly match against the Botswana national team. If they are unable to travel, they will forfeit the three points on offer to Nigeria and may also be punished by Fifa. However, officials remain optimistic that the government will come to the team’s rescue. Malawi released a list of 23 players that will take on the Super Eagles last week. Full squad Owen Chaima (Big Bullets), Charles Swini (Silver Strikers), James Sangala (free agent), Moses Chavula (Costa do Sol), Harry Nyirenda (Black Leopards), John Langesi (Civo United), Limbikani Mzava (Bloemfontein Celtic), George Nyirenda (Big Bullets), Lucky Malata (Silver Strikers), Foster Namwera (Ferroviaro de Nampula, Mozambique), Chimango Kayira (Big Bullets), Robert N’gambi (Platinum Stars), Dave Banda (Kamuzu Barracks),Tawonga Chimodzi (Greece), Phillip Masiye (Blue Eagles),Micium Mhone (Blue Eagles), Douglas Chirambo (Big Bullets), Peter Wadabwa (Golden Arrows),Chiukepo Msowoya (Maxaquene),Robin Ngalande (Wits University),Gabadinho Mhango (Big Bullets), Atusaye Nyondo (University of Pretoria), John C.J. Nigeria lawmakers are the highest paid in the world Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks.—Doug Larson Nice job if you can get it. No wonder the Nigerian Lawmaker fights tooth and nail to stay on the gravy train. It is a known fact that Nigerian Lawmakers are the highest paid in world. There are 109 Senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives so in terms of payment by result, the Nigerian lawmakers do not deserve such high pay and surely does not perform their duties to warrant such hyper inflated pay. In America, a Senator earns 174,000 US dollars and in the UK, a Member of parliament about 64,000 US dollars a year. So what do our lawmaker do for this generous amount can someone please tell me why they deserve this enormous amount of money. It is about time Nigerians demand better service and improvement for Nigeria and Nigerians. No one deserves that much money while ordinary people are scavenging to make ends meet. Nigeria has got multitude of deprivation; high infant mortality rate, maternal mortality rate, malnutrition, inadequate health care and transportation and lack of electricity outage, high crime rates, high number of young people not in education, employment or in training. So why is some of these excesses going to improve the lives of Nigerians. So instead Nigerians lawmakers are paid for below par performance and disregard to the electorates that they are meant to represent. I feel that ordinary Nigerians have been severely short changed, cheated and insulted by these so called honourable people. Senate President, David Mark and Speaker of House of Reps, Aminu Tanbuwal According to Professor Itse Sagay, he stated that the Nigerian lawmakers at the lower and upper chambers of the National Assembly are the highest paid legislators in the world. A senator in Nigeria earns 240 million naira (about 1.7 million US dollars) in salaries and allowances and a member of the House of Representatives earns 204 million naira (about 1.45million US dollars) per annum. It definitely rubs insult to injury for the average Civil servant who earns about 46 to 120 US dollars per month. RMAFC disputes the allowances that the lawmakers earn as misleading and describes the allowances as befitting the political and public office holders; such as the Nigerian Senator Remuneration package comes to 1,505% of basic salary, and the other 225% for furniture .So like I said, Fine job if you can get. Response to: A Time Will Come…? Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan I will say this. We are being judged as a nation. As Denrele Animasaun said, we like to show our allegiances to religion yet we have lost our humanity. The elite use the ethnic divisions for their own benefit yet we are too blind to see it. Only now are we beginning to wake up to this fact. It is funny that Obasanjo talks of his former Vice President and former governor of Bayelsa in this manner yet he picked Abubakar twice in return for campaign money and forced Goodluck Jonathan onto the late President Yar’Adua, a Goodluck Jonathan who later pardoned and forgave his former boss Alamieyeseigha. Those who are identify themselves as Ijaw who will still support Jonathan have themselves to blame if by 2019 their quality of life has not improved. They will blame the Northern elites of course or someone else other than themselves. This tribal politics has retarded our nation and many people know this. I have talked with them. However, many seem to be either on two track minds, shortsighted, or cowardly that they will return to tribal politics the next day. I will say this again, we are being judged by God now. He will not save those who do not attempt to save themselves. - Chukwuka Okoroafor Dear Denrele, Your above captioned article refers. It’s acceptable that the Columnist’s job is to point out the flaws, in order to elicit appropriate response. But our peculiar situation demands that it is even more helpful for possible solutions to be proffered, especially by those of you in the diaspora, who see how things are made to work. So next time you ask these many questions, please try give at least one good answer. “A time will come” when someone might use it to better our country. Have a fine day. Regards, -Alh Musah Ali My response: Dear Ali, Thank you for your email. A time will come… was very self indulgent and it was my way of exorcising the pain and frustration within me! In a country of so many talented and intelligent people you would think the solution will and can come from within. Outside looking in as diasporas, the solutions are oblivious; honesty, transparency, compassion and selflessness. All these characteristics are the bedrock of any civil society, you would expect that majority of people already have it. We as Nigerians truthfully lack most of these qualities so, about time we developed a conscience and work collectively towards building a better future. So my piece was to prick our collective conscience and judging by the number of mails I have received, it got people to think collectively that the answer lies within all of us. Regards, Denrele Animasaun We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office. – Aesop Whatever next? Ebenega Okorodudu, has requested that state and federal governments immortalise late Pius Akpor Ewherido. And he also would like the speedy release of former Governor of the State, Chief James Ibori, from London prison. Where do you begin with such people, even the pope cannot beatify any one unless there has been evidence of sustained good deeds and miracles. So unless the state and the federal government have become the Vatican then I am afraid that there is a case of delusion of grandeur going on. Certainly the sudden death of Ewherido in some quarters must have evoked so much emotions but I think common sense should prevail and accept that death is a leveller. As for Ibori? The good doctor is requesting that Ibori should be pardoned; he argued that the former governor was instrumental in the improvement of his state. Dr Okorodudu seem to have no integrity or morals when he talks warmly of Ibori’s crime as the man has no shame and he has lost touch with reality and with the ordinary Deltans and Nigerians in general. There is a big omission here; that Ibori is a convicted common criminal pure and simple. Nigerians should know right from wrong as the present crop of politicians are self serving and desperately want to hold on the last vestiges of power while ordinary Nigerian starve and pillage for need to know what is wrong form right and we cannot paint people as dignified and full of integrity when they have been caught, convicted of criminality because he has great that he improved a small part of his state, while he was siphoning the state coffers? He is where he belongs for the crime he had committed and it is evident that Nigeria would have done nothing but parade him as an honest for governor. The message to the younger generation is clear; you are honest provided that you are in government. In his own reasoning, Dr. Okorodudu said that the Federal and States governments to fast -track a means of releasing the former governor from the British custody where he is currently serving a jail term for offences bordering on money laundering, said the ex-governor is only a human being who can err, but if after owning up and apologizing to his people and the nation, he should have been given a very minimum sentence. Am not sure what stealing vegetable by a hungry person is nowadays but, I am sure it is not a minimal sentence. Yet a thief can steal billions and we create and perpetuate a corrupt society and we shrug our shoulders and we reasoned that there is not much we can do about it as everyone is doing it! Here lies the problem, we look to others to change their ways while we continue being dishonest and incorrigible. So for an errant politician they demand a softly, softly approach. Nigeria has a problem and our lawmakers are a representational of our people and there lies our problem. Let This Be The Last ASUU Strike For the sake of Nigerian students who have been idling away for the past six weeks, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be asked to call off its strike anytime soon. But the university teachers should not be returning to the classrooms simply because the federal government has promised to spend N100billion on infrastructure in the 61 federal universities or N30billion for unpaid allowances. The question that should trouble everyone is: after this, what next? Will there not be a repeat next year and the next year? Since the federal government has failed to honour the agreement it reached with ASUU in 2009, what is the guarantee that it won’t default again even in the agreement it may sign with the body this year? Where is the integrity often preached by many Nigerian government officials? It is clear that the nation’s political leaders are bent on driving a nail into the coffin of tertiary education in Nigeria. Were it not so, nobody would refuse to honour an agreement voluntarily signed by the Federal Government of Nigeria at a time of unprecedented oil boom. Finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala couldn’t have been serious when she said that the government lacked N92billion for payment of wages. This is less than the amount stolen every month in Nigeria. It is less than 10 per cent of what a presidential candidate spent during the electioneering of 2011. Government either agrees to fund university education as demanded by ASUU or “privatise” its universities. We either have universities or not have them. It is of no use underfunding varsities and expecting them to perform magic. Students in our tertiary institutions should be able to acquire the necessary knowledge and be prepared to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development. And jobs should be made available for them. It is suicidal to keep churning out millions of young people from institutions of higher learning each year only to keep them in the labour market forever. Enough of this hypocrisy. The current ASUU strike shows that this is not a serious nation. It has lasted long mainly because the children of most of the governors, ministers, senators and other government officials are not in Nigerian universities. Of course, there are Nigerians with enough money to sponsor their wards in well-funded schools in America, Europe and even in South Africa and Ghana. One federal lawmaker has promised to introduce a bill that would make it compulsory for Nigerian public servants to keep their children in public schools. Likely, he was merely jesting: no such bill will be allowed to see the light of day in the House of Representatives or the Senate. Yet, it is in everybody’s interest to have a nation ruled with justice and fairness. ASUU must strive to make this its last strike over failure of government to fulfil the conditions agreed upon in 2009. No half measures. This time, it should force the federal government to take a decision on the future of tertiary education. No amount of intimidation and threat should make the ASUU team back down on the union’s demands. - See more at: http://leadership.ng/news/210813/let-be-last-ASUU-strike#sthash.8NvfHeMX.dpuf |

Feature: Beverly, Cleo and Melvin in the Finale 8/12/2013 9:25:00 PM Nigerian Chasemates Beverly and Melvin will sail to the Finale alongside Ghana's Elikem and Zambian Cleo. After HoH Elikem made his final decision to Save himself and butcher South Africa's Angelo, the four Chasemates secured a place in the Finale. Beverly and Melvin are the last pair standing after all other countries lost one or both of their Housemates to Evictions during the course of The Chase. This means that only one Housemate between Bimp, Dillish and Angelo will join the elite four in the road to the Finale. An intereting fact is that both Dillish and Bimp Nominated each other so as they lick each other's wounds this week, being the only ones who know for sure that they are up for Eviction, that fact will be lingering at the back of their minds. Cleo has been up for Eviction four times and never had the opportunity to be Saved by the Head of House but was fortunate enough t be Saved by Africa on all ocassions. Elikem on the other hand has faced the Eviction dagger twice, in Week 4 and in Week 9. During the first Nominations of the Season, he was Saved by Feza and that was in their happier times, in Week 6 and 10, he Saved himself as he did the same tonight. In Week 7 and 8, Elikem was Saved by Oneal and Sulu respectively they must be kicking themselves right now. Beverly is the only Housemate who ade it to the Finale without having to face Eviction throughout the Season. This fact must be true in the history of Big Brother Africa. Melvin on the other hand also managed to dodge the dagger until Week 6 when he saw it it to put himself up for possible Eviction instead of Swapping any his fellow Housemates who were Nominated at the time. Luckily for him, Africa had his back and he was back to continue with The Chase. At the end of the day, it's anyone's game and only one in five or is it in 28, will walk away with the muh coveted USD 300 000. Allow your fingers to do the talking and ensure that your favourite Chasemate joins Elikem, Cleo, Beverly and Melvin on the high table. Who will join the Top five on Sunday? Angelo, Bimp and Dillish are up for possible Eviction this week. Vote here to keep your favourite Housemate in the game.

Earthquake strikes southern Greece Last updated: 2 hours ago Quake rattles Athens causing buildings to shake, but no immediate reports of casualties or damage, police say. A magnitude 5.1 earthquake has struck southern Greece, the state-run ANA news agency has said. The quake rattled the Greek capital, Athens, on Wednesday, causing buildings to shake for several seconds, the Reuters news agency quoted witnesses as saying. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, police and fire brigade officials said. The magnitude 5.1 quake struck northeast of Patras at a depth of 9.7 miles, the US Geological Survey said. Thanassis Ganas, a seismologist with the Athens Observatory, said that the earthquake was "a normal tremor for the area". "While the earthquake wasn't that strong it was felt because it was near the surface," an official at the Athens Geodynamic Institute said. Greece is often rattled by earthquakes. While most cause no serious damage, a 5.9 magnitude quake killed 143 people in 1999. Source http://m.aljazeera.com/se/20138792944934535 |
