intrinsicniyi: Hi,
" No one said it was going to be easy ". From the little knowledge I have, I believe focus can actually be achieved in reality via" VERY STRONG DETERMINATION "
..... You want a good job, be determined to get it.... ..... you want a 1st class in school, be determined.... ..... you want a scholarship, be determined....... ..... you want to acquire new skill, be determined.... ...You want to build house, buy car, travel abroad--- be determined... .....you want to ACHIEVE anything, BE DETERMINED TO GET IT...
It must be noted that Determination encompasses ingredients for success which are " ruggedness, perseverance, urge for accomplishment and focus itself".
Thank you.... You are one of the reasons I always thank God that I know Nairaland. |

Enough of politics related updates on the frontpage. |

hahn: Manage your priorities.
Sleep less, schedule your time to only what is important to you now, your schooling and your business. Delegate when necessary, avoid unproductive circles and social gatherings. Your every second is important. Apply social media advertising and web solutions, like a website, to your business to reduce the amount of time spent on offline marketing.
Your schooling will be over soon and you will benefit greatly from the clients and patronage you will build now and it will give you an upper hand when you are eventually able to dedicate your full time to your business. Working and schooling are a norm in developed countries and i do certainly believe it can be emulated here.
Even despite the presence of top quality infrastructure in developed countries, not everyone there is a success. There is no where in the world where success is handed down on a platter and there are numerous examples of foreign successful who had to overcome different challenges and difficulties on the path to success.
The number of challenges we face here are OUR responsibility and even offer us numerous opportunities. For every problem there is a solution and whoever is able to solve a great problem is certain of attaining great success. Nice post....the lesson I got is immense, thanks. |

dearpreye: Good evening, my brother. I'm shocked I didn't see the mention. Let's hope very sensible comments will flood this thread.
With all humility and sincerity, staying focused in Nigeria, in the midst of myriads of distractions, isn't an easy task. It requires a lot of determination, courage, persistence and possibly, flexibility to be focused. Our system seems it's designed to ensure we struggle and struggle more in other to make it.
But we have NO excuses if we must achieve a greater level of success and fulfilment. Others are making it legal in Nigeria; we too can!
In your case, I believe the following few points can help you be more focused.
Always Visualise Your Success. It's always a commendable habit to visualise the successful completion of your dreams. That will help you to take off your eyes from the distraction and have them fixated on your goals. I'm a piano enthusiast. When I started my piano classes, it was so hard teaching my hands something new. The fingers rebelled at the outset. I didn't give up. But whenever I visualise the joy that will follow my playing the piano before my loved ones and church, I became more focused on achieving my aim. Today, I can say I play some decent piano. The distractions are hurdles you must handle very well to remain on course.
Write Your Goals And Have Them Pasted Somewhere.
Only a few of us actually write down our own goals. A greater few will have them written and pasted where they can see them. To be focused, endeavour to have your goals written and pasted where you can always see them. Try and do that. It may help. Thanks a lot, you are a blessing to humanity. |

Although, this question has been asked in a thread, it is not getting the needed answer. So I have decided to create a thread for it so that many people can also learn from the answers that will be provided, it goes thus: I am asking this question on behalf of a student whom I try to motivatemenzo4u: Without doubts, focus is indeed an integral part of the course to success. The question remains how possible is it for one to be really focused and concentrate in a country where we find it hard to make ends meet?
For example, as a student, I want to pass out with good grades in school, at the same time I have to find means to sponsor my education with my "Camera handling" skill.
To come out with good grades in school, I have to focus on studying hard.
To succeed as a camera handler or someone who earns his living through it and also wants to be th best at it; it also requires my focus.
Now, how can one strike the balance, how can FOCUS be practised in reality? Any insight please?

My Talent, My Gift
Talent means different thing to different people, to some, it is mere gift, while others see it as an ordinary “luck”.
But, what is Talent?
Talent is that natural gift or ability that you possess that differentiates you from others. It is unique and special. No one is born without one talent or the other, but it is indeed unfortunate that many of us have this rich talent, but we fail to discover it. While some of us who have discovered it has simply failed to develop it.
Now, the question to ask is this: What talent do you have? What is that thing that you think you always feel like doing and when you do it, people applaud you for it?
Running can be your talent, who knows; you can become the Usain Bolt of tomorrow. The record he has set as far as athletics is concerned, even 10 years from now, I doubt any athlete can break it. He has achieved these feet because he discovered his talent and developed it.
Dancing may be what you love, who knows, you can become the Kaffy of tomorrow, where she has reached in her life, even that PhD Holder who has failed to discover his/her talent has not achieved that feet.
Football may be your talent, who knows; you can become the Mikel Obi of your family tomorrow and make your family proud like Papilo.
Fighting can also be your talent, just don’t use it in a negative way, embark on boxing training, who knows, you can become the May Weather of your own generation.
Now, we must not fail to understand that discovering our talent is a “big deal”. Many have this talent, but not many have that vision and ability to discover it.
So, the question is, what can you do to discover your talent?
Follow this step: *Ask your family members ---- Ask Daddy (Mummy), what do you think I know how to do best?
*Ask your friends ------ They know you more than you think, in life, you definitely can’t see your back, it is someone else that will see it. Ask them the same question; tell them to tell you the TRUTH.
*Ask yourself ------ What do I just like doing best, even if no one will pay me for it.
I know you want to read, you want to have a distinction, PLEASE, don’t jeopardize your talent all in the name of reading. Strategize your schedule, don’t spend all the hours of your day solving Mathematics or reading all books, create time to develop your talent.
Your talent is the only asset that can separate you from the crowd.
Just imagine, you study hard in school just to have good grades and get the best certificate in Accounting, Business Administration, Mass Communication.e.t.c. When you graduate, there are thousands of people who have that same academic skill you possess (no difference), as result, the number of job applicants is more than available job.
Why don’t you differentiate yourself? Discover your talent, develop it and see yourself become an employer rather than an employee.
Lastly, this is not to create the impression that you should not study hard to make good grade in school, but don’t do it at the expense of your talent.
“your talent is God’s gift to you, what you do with it is your gift to back to God”. ---- Leo Buscaglia
………don’t waste your talent……
Are you having problems discovering or developing your talent? Ask me, let’s share Ideas.

dearpreye: You keep going bro. Keep the spirit going. Don't fail to ask a friend to score your performance whenever you talk. Ask them to be honest with you.
Talent is our natural advantage over others when it comes to performing certain things. It could be in writing, machines, drawing, mathematics, football, music, piano, Guitar, swimming, speaking, counselling. Whatever. Everyone has one talent or the other.
But talent is overrated and inadequate when it comes to making our lives successful. We can't rely on our talents alone. We must add determination, perseverance and hard work to our talents if we must succeed.
Late Bob Nestor Marley was no doubt a talented musician but before he became a phenomenal success he was reported to have spent over 10000 hours practising behind the screen. The same is prominent with the likes of Bill Gates, The Beatles, etc.
We must add other character to our talents before we can succeed. Thanks a lot, I never fail to ask fellow peers abou my performance as you advised. Nice piece, keep up the good work. |

Tomorrow (Monday), my motivational speech will be titled "TALENT". Though I already have my own planned speech on mind, I believe you guys will enable me to be able to do more justice to the topic.
So I need your suggestions on what areas, what ways and how the topic can best be treated.i.e. If you are to motivate people on this topic how would you go about it?
Others, including myself, can learn from what you write.
KUDOS! To you all "motivators" in the house.

When I was doing mine d 1st question pple ask is "who is he" therefore am nw like a pastor who must b holy to keep d respect pple give him intact Thanks for your candid advice, however, my type of motivational speech is very religiously neutral, I make sure I pass my message in such a way that I don't claim to be hollier than thou. That is why whenever I give my speech, I end it by saying, forget about the messanger; focus on the message. I can't leave my life in pretence, after my speech, I still play around like every other student, moving with babes if necessary that's just ME. Those who will get the message will always get it. |

bare1: I doff my hat for you brother dearpreye: Please, don't stop contributing meaningfully to this thread. We're indebted greatly to you. Just like a musician would say "I killed the show", interestingly, I did a lot better in my speech delivery today as I was able to get the attention of my audience (fellow students) today. Guys I am grateful, in particular, bare1 and you, the concept and ideas you gave worked just fine! Thanks. I have just gotten a fellow student who also through my influence, wants to be delivering motivational speech in class. We have concluded that he should talk about GOAL. But as for me, I will not be delivering speech until Monday, as usual kindly suggest a topic that would also be of great interest to the students, just like you suggested VISION. As you give the topic, endeavour to give me hints and also write (in summary) about the topic. You can take your time to reply my post at a time you are probably less busy. Thanks. May God in His infinite mercy increase you in knowledge and give you more wisdom to have great positive impact in the life of people. |

bare1: Well done Sir! You seem to be doing great in your speech as it seems you are more in control now.
About catching your audience's attention, I think you should be spontaneous. Focus on your subject and place yourself in the audience, then ask yourself those questions that need answers. Say vision for example, what are those rewards of having a vision? Many people desire success, so starting with some sort of punchline concerning what they want would arouse interest.
About motivating them, people get motivated by success stories. Learn about successful people - especially those with peculiar stories - and their march to success. Give them your own experiences too to challenge them. Motivation is to the mind, as food is to the stomach. It is required in daily doses to prompt action, so serve it to them everyday. Thanks a lot. |

dearpreye: Ask a few of them to tell you what their vision for life is. You should have known yours na. .LOL!
A vision is that purpose for which they were created by God. What motivates them most is their vision. It goes beyond academics. It's goes beyond certificates. It goes beyond their degrees. If any can't tell you their vision in a minute, you can safely conclude they have NO vision.
Most of us just live from day to day. We don't even a vs ion for a week. We don't even the faintest idea of what we want to become. Getting a degree doesn't automatically translate into having a vision. Our wealth and fame are embedded in our vision.
Life's beyond academics. ...beyond the four walls of the higher Institution. Wow! You are an inspiration to humanity |

dearpreye: Once again, I'm delighted at your ongoing success story. The more we practise, the better we become at whatever we're doing.
Well, to a very large extent, the means you can deploy to capture the attention of your audience depends on the type of audience you're dealing with. In this particular situation, starting off with a short but profound story could be a very effective means. A joke could also suffice. You could even share your own relevant and captivating story. Or ask a rhetorical thought- provoking question.
Cc: bare1 Actually, I am addressing fellow students, they are my audience, although as time goes on, I will extend it to other classes. Thanks a lot, I have really picked some points in your post. (More blessing) So tomorrow as you suggested, my topic will be VISION...please I need your hints to backup my own findings. What are the areas I really need to dig into? What can I really say that will really motivate them?etc Thanks. |

dearpreye: That very first step is very crucial in building our confidence in public speaking. I thank God for today, your moral support and encouragement has kept me going. I will like to share my challenge and experience with you and others in relation to what happened when I was delivering my speech today. When I started, everyone kept making noise and seems not to be listening to me, it was as if the audience was simply not in my favour. After the speech delivery, I called a guy who also shares in my vision to ask him about what I needed to improve on, and his reply goes thus," First you need to gain their attention before starting your speech delivery". Then I asked him,"How can I gain their (audience) attention?" But his reply was too vague for my comprehension. Please how can I gain the attention of my fellow students (audience) before delivering my speech so that they can listen to me. Thanks. |

dearpreye: We're happy you're joining the boat of personal development and growth. We just have to work harder on ourselves.
I know stage fright is real and can go along way in scuttling our ambitions. From the first page I stated how I also was paralysed by my fear of failure as far as creating this thread was concerned. I paid more attention to failure than the benefits it could bring to people. That thought kept me lazying around for weeks. Thanks to God I was able to overcome it.
Well, you could gradually by talking to your room mates first. ...then seek to increase and widen the audience as time goes on. Try to speak on an area you're well knowledgeable. No matter how prepared you are, you are likely to still feel that tension in the opening minutes. Talk to your mirror over and over again. Practise. Focus on the goal, not the difficulty.
