It is a great privilege and honour on my part to be placed side-by-side with these academic giants. Thanks to the organisers of this debate. Hoping to keep making myself and the great Yabatech proud.
Fynestboi: Check out the video on how the topics were picked for each fixtures, remember we said the fixture will be a first from a team Vs the second from another team.
Fynest... Please I need to get this clairification from you before proceding on our debate. My team member just told me now that there is a video on the "Fixtures thread", I have no data to watch it at this moment. He said it's Yabatech VS UNIJOS on this number one topic.. "Is (the removal of fuel) subsidy justified in Nigeria?" With Yabatech supporting and UNIJOS opposing, kindly confirm this for me please. Thanks in advance.
Happy New Year..!!!!!!!!!! Seun....my role model happy new year Lalasticlala...my mentor happy new year Fynestboi...my inspirer happy new year And to all nairalanders home and abroad happy new year
LARRYDKING: One of the causes of terrorism is injustice. It will be so unfair to bury such evidence of recklessness by the NA. with the video and pictures evidences, the government has set up a committee to wade into the matter and give appropriate verdict.
Injustice? The same alleged injustice that brought about BokoHaram. My stand remains that the media is not helping matters at all. There are better ways to make this known to the appropriate authorities for proper investigation. For example if you happen be a relative to this man and you see this kind of picture of him. What would you be tempted to do? If not for the fact that the Shiite followers are peaceful people, they could have gone weird seeing this picture alone.
U wrote that ''Ibrahim Zak’zaky, before we knew it, his fake pictures showing how he had been beaten up andtortured by the Nigerian Army in a pool ofblood was already circulated in the media. This singular false report has attracted various international protests from countries like Iran, India and so on''.
Do you have the original of the pix?? Please let's have a look. Do you believe the video too? I doubt if you do.
The NA's killings were extrajudicial and should be protested.
or does protest also mean terrorism?
Having issues with my browser here.... My motive according to that post was not to support the NA on their action, but to bring into light the gravity of the sensitivity of the case in question.
The same NA still denied having the Shiit leader in their custody, even if it's that the army ever did such thing to him, professional ethics demand that such report should not be made, especially at the period when the government is still battling with BokoHaram.
A throw back to the origin of BokoHaram will show you that one of the reasons they became so dreaded as they are today is owing the perceived maltreatment of their leader (Yusuf) which later led to his death. Remember BokoHaram did not start out as a terrorist group, but a religious movement like Shii't.
“The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty, and make the guilty innocent, and that is power. Because they control the mind of the masses”-MalcomX
On this note, I use this medium to extend my humble greetings to the organisers of this great debate, the unbiased jurists, fellow debaters and the highly observant spectators. My name is menzo4u, first representative of Yaba College of Technology, Yabatech. I am opposing the topic which says as quoted, “Media: A panacea for global terrorism".
There is no gainsaying the media has taken over the globe, especially in a world where technology is fast-growing like the speed of light, such that we can now have access to any information on our palm. Before delving into details, I will like to give a comprehensive definition of the key terms in the subject of discourse.
Terrorism: According wikipedia, it is commonly defined as a violent act (or the threat of violent acts) intended to create fear (terror), perpetrated for a religious, political or ideological goal, and which deliberately disregard the safety of the non-combatants (e.g., neutral military personnel or civilians). Media: Wikipedia also defines media as the the collective communication outlets or tools that are used to deliver information or data. The media comes in various forms such as print media (newspapers, magazines), social media (whatsapp, twitter, facebook), and electronic media (radio, television) among others.
The question as to whether the media is a problem or a panacea (solution) for global terrorism is not a debatable one. This fact can best be established through the way the media has promoted the rise in terrorism across the globe. The main objective of terrorist organisations is to garner recognition and propagate their “gospel” to the world, and the media has been a perfect tool for them to achieve this purpose. The case study here is the Islamic State of Iraq and Levente (ISIL) and BokoHaram which make use of various online media to increase their level of global recognition by uploading various attacks they perpetrated through the use of YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook among others.
Before the current revolution of the media, particularly before the internet comes into the scene, there have been many terrorist organisations in various parts of the world, but hardly do they gain this type of global awareness and recognition as it is today. In case I start talking about some past terrorist groups like the Aryan Nations, the Orange Volunteers, Antibalaka Group, hardly can anyone know about them due to the very low media coverage they had compared to this era.
In addition, the social media in particular has been a source of recruitment for terrorists. According to a news report by Newyork Times, ISIL for instance, now has online media through which they recruit teenagers globally. A similar instance is Alex, a 23-year old American who confesses to have been lured into joining the ISIL through the “Twitter”, and many of such cases. The fibble-minded who go online are easily brainwashed and hoodwinked into various terrorist organisations around the world.
Furthermore, the media instigate violence through false publications, which eventually leads to terrorism. Some weeks ago, news broke out concerning the bombardment of the headquarters of Shi’ite Group (an Islamic Movement in Nigeria) which led to the arrest of their leader, Ibrahim Zak’zaky, before we knew it, his fake pictures showing how he had been beaten up and tortured by the Nigerian Army in a pool of blood was already circulated in the media. This singular false report has attracted various international protests from countries like Iran, India and so on. If not for the timely intelligence applied by the Federal Government of Nigeria to curb the issue, the Shi’ite followers would have been another new-born terror group by now due to the alleged toturing of their leader which the media made them believe.
Furthermore, terrorist organizations now use the online media as a channel through which they communicate with one another. A news report on dreitbart.com (2014) said, and I quote “BokoHaram receiving advice from ISIS on how to create African caliphate”. The media has made this possible for the terrorists through the use of social media accounts like Twitter, Facebook, among others. This is what they term “online jihad”.
By implication, the media also make the success against winning the war against terrorism a difficult one. Since the media is not only a source of communication but also information, the terrorists have taken advantage of this to have easy access to various plans by the millitary and thereby making adjustment to their plans. For example, if not for the throughly restricted media access that the United States ensured during their intensive search for Osama Binladen, the media would have published several moves to capture him to the public domain.
In conclusion, just like MalcomX’s quote above,”…the media control the mind of the masses”. The masses is you and me, it is the teenagers who have unrestricted access to various media like Google, twitter, or Youtube to watch “interestingly”, how various terror acts are carried out across the globe, and eventually put it into practice. In my final words, I believe with the aforementioned challenges, the media is not a panacea for global terrorism. Thank you.
Fynestboi: Yes.... It's just essay submission for this stage.... Submit your essay at the designated time and you wait for analysis and score from the judges.
The designated time which is 27th December @12:00 noon for team?
Toks2008: A man of vision is not necessarily a potentially rich man and a successful man is never the same as a rich man.
Often times when a lady says "I want a man with vision" what goes through her mind is that she wants a man that has good plans to make good money in the future.
Most ladies are fond of having a prototype figure of the type of man they want and in-fact when some ladies watch some accomplished guys on TV they just imagine their man could be who they are watching and some even develop hatred for their men wondering why his story is not like the rich men they read about or watch on TV but the hard fact of life is that every one of us have different scripts of life and we can never ever be the same.
Before you marry a man you must understand what he wants from life and trust me,some men have vision that has no affiliations to riches and you must also understand that no matter how dogged and resilient that guy may be in actualizing his dreams, some visions never come to pass and you must understand these facts and decide if you are still interested in being with him regardless and not frustrate his life if things do not turn out the way he planned.
Some guys have a vision to be good activists, caterers.teachers, missionaries,to serve someone,to be a dancer, sportsman, drummer and so on but the truth is that a man's vision is his vision so whenever ladies use these words "I want a man of vision" they must understand that some men don't even have vision to be rich but to be fulfilled and fulfillment in your career is never the same as riches.
People who changed the history of the world where not wealthy talking about
Jesus Christ Muhamed. Isaac newton, Nelson Mandela, christopher columbus, The Buddha Mikhail Gorbachev Winston Churchill Woodrow Wilson William Shakespeare Martin Luther King ...
I can only imagine if Jesus happens to have a lady he was planning to marry and he tells the lady that his vision is to die for the world, will she still stand by him and marry him? So when next a lady says "she wants a man with vision" Please don't think that every visionary man is keen on riches so ask that guy well and decide if you are willing to stand by him or just take a walk and allow a lady who will go all the way with him come into his life.
And for the guys, please don't be scared to open up to that lady on your real vision no matter how stupid or lowly it may be,remember that following your passion and fulfilling your vision is the greatest success and the greatest wealth you can ever acquire but you must also understand that no matter your vision,it is important for you to still perform your primary financial duty as the head of the family.
And for the ladies i will advice that you look inward,be a goal getter and set out early in life to also achieve your goals in life without any form of dependency or expectancy from any man because that man who seem to have great wealth today can crash in a swift and that unassuming man could become a billionaire later so go for the man of your heart, take the risk,be with a man for the right reason and commit the rest to fate.
importexpert: As you are aspiring to start your online or offline business, it is important you read this article. i was so disappointed when i read a research carried out by an international U.S based organization (S.B.A small business administration) on the percentage of online business that fails. they revealed that about 80% of online businesses fails within the first year and this made me to carry out a little research on why such business fail in Nigeria and how to avoid such failures.
Online businesses should be treated very much the same like a real offline business. If you were to start a Barbing saloon, shoe making, tailoring, baking etc, what would you do? What mindset do you need? With the wrong mindset, you are setting up your online business for failure.
With the hype that people have been getting on the internet, many have come to believe that millions can be earned overnight without any effort. Sure, you can earn a lot of money online; but not overnight. Those who have "overnight" success with one project, be it sealing an importation deal, website design or programing project, had to learn and practice over some period of time before they learned how to earn huge money faster.
So, if you're serious about becoming rich making money through the net, you must first avoid the top reasons why online businesses fail:
1) Information Overload: The internet is an intricate network of massive information highways. If you've been searching for the key to online success for quite some time now, chances are you already read a massive amount of data and information that most probably has led you to confusion. It's difficult to sift through the pages and pages of reading materials and find one that would really give you the step-by-step guide to start giving you sizable monthly income online.
2) Lack of Focus: The problem with so many websites promising you huge amount of income opportunities, people end up jumping from one thing to another. Will you go for blogging? Affiliate marketing? Importation? There are just so many ways to make money online. My advice: just get something done. Start with one and make some money before you move to the next.
3) No Goal: Whether you're doing your business online or offline, having your goal is one solid foundation to determine whether you will succeed or fail. Not knowing where you're going will definitely lead you nowhere. Guaranteed.
4) No Compelling Reason to Succeed: How many times have you set a goal and then just forget it? Why are you setting that particular goal? You want to earn N300,000 within 3 months and improve that by N100,000 every month until you reach N1,000,000 per month? Great! But the question is why? Is it for your education? Is that for your marriage celebration? Is it because you need to set aside N200,000 per month for your long term care? Or to help your needy relatives and neighbors?
5) Lack of Patience: With the instant coffee, instant downloads and all the instant gratification society has spoiled us with, people got accustomed to "I-get-what-I-want-NOW!" Success is never overnight. You need to pay the price. We can't get away from the Law of Sowing and Reaping. You will always reap what you planted. But you have to give the seeds time to grow and be nurtured properly by the sun.
It's a blessing that while we need to put in some work doing online business, it is actually much less and simpler than you can imagine if you have a guiding compass like me that shows you the does and don't s.
All you need to start is to know the basics. You need an easy to follow guide that shows you how to do online business by simply connecting the dots, and you can avoid the pitfalls of online business and eventually achieve great success.
i hope you enjoyed reading this article and feel free to ask me your questions regarding online businesses and especially online importation. your success is truly my pride.
for those copy cat that must copy this article, please link it back to Nairaland, importExpert and this thread.
@Fynestboi, this issue of grouping is not working out at all, just some uncooperating fellows here...it's really difficult getting others to work together. Individually would have simply been the best. But no prob, I'll try my best.
post=20371289: My name is Promisechild, the chief speaker of the great citadel of learning (Kogi State University,Ayingba). The topic to debate on is: CORRUPTION IS A SOCIETAL EVIL CRIPPLING OUR COUNTRY NIGERIA: WHO TAKES THE MOST BLAME, LEADERS OR THE FOLLOWERS? I will support that the leaders take the most blame. First of all who is a Leader? A leader is a person who has a vision, a drive and a commitment to achieve that vision, and the skills to make it happen.
What are the traits a leader exhibits? * Has integrity- People have to believe that you are pursuing your dream because it's the right thing to do, not just because you are ego driven.
* Is a people person- Understands the differences that make people unique and is able to use those individual skills to achieve the goal.
* Is positive- A leaderencourages and rewards people and makes you want to do it and do it right. A leader is not a negative person and does not waste time and effort telling everyone what they're doing wrong.
*A leader leads by example. Ironically, the opposite is the case in my dear country Nigeria. The above traits are a fantasy in my country. The leaders are the ones encouraging corruption in all nooks and crannies of the country. They will tell you to beat drums is mere children's play the adult is to start echoes.
Corruption has been the evil crippling our society which the leaders take the huge blame. When we are talking about leaders we are not talking about political office holder only. My Lecturer in school does usually make an expression, thus I quote "not all politicians are leaders and not all leaders are politicians". Nigeria as the giant of Africa has lost her respect in the global world due to her incessant criminal activities spearheaded by our leaders. Even though no country in the world is corrupt free. The pervasive and deep-rooted nature of corruption in Nigeria is indicated by the fact that in 1996, Transparency International (TI) ranked Nigeria as the 2nd most corrupt nation among the 54 nations surveyed (Morre, 1997). In 1998, Nigeria was again ranked the 2nd most corrupt nation out of the 85 countries polled by TI (Lipset and Lenz, 2000). In 2001, Nigeria was ranked 90 out of 91 countries pooled. By 2009, the Global Perception Index (CPI) by TI rated Nigeria 130th out of the 180 countries surveyed. For the year, 2010, Nigeria ranked 134th out of 178 countries assessed (Abiodun, 2012). In 2011, the TI, in its report on corruption perception, rated Nigeria as the 143 most corrupt nations out of the 183 countries surveyed (Business Day, 2012)
. Indeed as Derin (2007) notes, Nigeria has been featuring prominently amongst the most corrupt nations of the world for the past thirty years. The effects and implications of the full scale corruption inNigeria‘s social, political and economic development are myriad.
Corruption in Nigeria constitutes a serious barrier to effective resource mobilization and allocation as it diverts resources away from activities that are vital to poverty eradication, economic and sustainable development (Derin, 2007). As a matter of fact, corruption in Nigeria has resulted to a reduction in the quality and quantity of goods and services available to the public as reflected in poor infrastructures, poor quality of education, health care and transportation system. Some anti- graft agencies was introduced by the Nigerian government in order to monitor corruption in the country and to gain the trust of the people but we never knew these anti -graft bodies were set up to persecute the ordinary man in the street while leaving our kpletocratic leaders who stole billions of naira alone. If I may ask what have these bodies done to those specifically accused of maladministration and embezzlement of public funds? Specifically these governors were under trial for alleged corrupt practices and enrichment, among others include the following: NAME and STATE 1 Chimaroke, Nnamani Enugu 2 Gbenga Daniel Ogun 3 Alao Akala Oyo 4 Akwe Dorme Nasarawa 5 Bola Tinubu Lagos 6 Ikedi Ohakim Imo 7 Joshua Dariye Plateau 8 Saminu Turaki Jigawa 9 Jolly Tanko Nyame Taraba 10 Orji Uzor Kalu Abia 11 Peter Odili Rivers 12 Lucky Iginedion Edo Others that are being investigated by EFCC include Wamako Aliyu of Sokoto State, Ibrahim Idris of Kogi State, Timpriye Sylva of Bayelsa state, Boni Haruna of Adamawa state, Michael Botmang of plateau state, Rasheed Ladoja of Oyo state . Other high profile cases of corruption include the ones involving Professor Babalola Borishade and Femi-Fani Kayode, former Aviation minister, over the fraudulent handling of N19.5 billion Aviation International fund, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo Bello and former health minister, Adenike Grange, over misappropriation of N300 million meant for the ministry, where are their cases today? I guess! It has been thrown to the bush. They loot our money and take it to other countries while the people are suffering and having emaciated bones. The followers are now been forced to follow the foot step of their leaders because every part of country is full of corruption. Position in offices now depends on whom you know in government house or the money you can pay in order to be listed in the senator’s slot which has made merit to be sacrificed for flaw and crippling our societal values. With the above points I mentioned I am not trying to confuse you but to convince you that our leaders are responsible for the corruption crippling our country Nigeria. Thank You

importexpert: i am not ready or i am too busy to start. please keep those stories out of this thread. i remembered Napoleon Hills in his book titled "think and grow rich" when he said "the right time to start is now, either or not you are ready because the time will never be right for you to start. if you do not start now you may end up never starting." these words of his are usually a fire gear for me. lets get in to our today's job.
Anyone can build an internet business from scratch with very little guidance and slim budget, if you read how many of those that have made it big in Nigeria started, you will understand what i mean. To cut back on start-up cost, many people choose not to have a website yet and post their products or services in different classified ads sites, auction sites and even blog sites. this strategy works very fine especially when you are selling physical products online. selling on classified ads site is still being overlooked by many but for person like me, i take it very serious as between 2014-015 they have earned me not less than 4million Naira.
this form of online business needs next to no start up capital. i know you may be thinking ImportExpert you are an importer and you already have your imported products to sell. you are right to an extent but you also have something to sell. i have an uncle that sells cars, we were discussing and he told me that their market is going very low. i told him i understand that things are changing he needs to upgrade by marketing his products online but he was arguing that he has done everything so i called a neighbor that just graduated from the uni and is in search of job. he had laptop and i bought him modem. i thought him within 30minutes how he can sell my uncle's cars on classified ads sites like olx, jiji etc just google classified ads site in Nigeria and you will get many. the deal is that for every sale he makes, he will have his own commission which can be from ten thousand naira to hundreds of thousands of Naira. in a nutshell, that is how my neighbor started his online/offline business selling people's products by just snapping their pictures. you can also start like that. just get the pictures of what you are selling, upload it on classified ads site, when buyers call you, take them to the owners that you have already discussed your commission with. the product you can apply this technique to include, cars, lands, houses, houses for rent, home properties etc.
Other people choose to start their business together with the launch of their website. If you are starting an internet business from scratch, either option is viable and must be your first step.
Before launching your business online
Any business launch requires careful planning to improve chances of achieving the expected result. So prior to launching an internet business, it is important to identify two things:
1. the nature of the business
2. the strategies in order to maximize your presence online.
If you are offering a service, identify what is that service. Same thing goes if you are selling a product. For a service-centered business, drawing from your existing skills is the best way to go. It is pointless to consider offering services which you have little or no idea at all. If you are selling a product, either you make your own product or get products offline and sell them online. Either way, you have to make sure that whatever product you are going to sell has a demand online. There are also affiliate products you can offer and network marketing companies you can join.
Once you have identified a service to offer or products to sell, your next task is identifying where you want to place them. If you don't have a website, your products would have to go to classified ads sites such as olx. jiji, jumia and konga also have such facilities that you can sell your products on them. if you will need a detailed guide on products that you can buy and sell on those sites, my importation guide can see you through. just look through my profile
Whether you have a website or not, make sure that you market your internet business through different means. Since what you are offering can be similar or identical to those that are already online, you have to make sure that you reach as many people as possible. This is where good online marketing strategies come in handy. Selling a product or offering a service is one thing; making sure that people know it is another.
There are lots of different ways to promote your site, your product or your services. Take note of these since the bulk of your work will revolve around online marketing.
1. Marketing through forum. nairaland and other related Nigerian forums are a good place to get started.
2. Article writing and article distribution. Submitting quality articles with backlinks to different article submission sites.
3. Advertisement. Pay-per-click ads, banner ads and textual ads.
4. Blogging. Promoting your business through blogging can generate lots of leads if done right.
5. Social media. Almost all businesses have presence in Facebook because of more than 800 million Facebook users as potential market.
6. SEO. If you have a site, there are different search engine optimization strategies you can use. This should be done consistently to make sure that you get higher chances of success. If you don't have a website, maximize your web exposure by registering to different service/product exchange portals.
6. Constantly improve your skills and products. The market is changing every day and you have to be a step ahead of the competition.
i know you will still complain of time so let me narrate a little. i remembered when i was working with one of my freelancer/virtual assistant from u.k, i think it was Sunday or so and it was already late at Night so i told him that he should continue the project tomorrow so he told me that he will be on a different job the next day. i told him that i really want my job done by tomorrow and it was then he told me that he works in the bank that was why he will not be available for online work tomorrow. the question here is how many of our Nigerian bankers are willing to work 2extra hours online a day? the last time i checked even our primary and secondary school teachers think they are too busy to work online. until we change such perspective, we will be loosing millions online yearly.
This is a product of my last 2 hours please do not use this content anywhere without linking back to this thread.
