BusinessAdvertising Media Terms To Remember by Merlissa(op): 9:26am On Aug 05, 2015
Whether you're researching or already working with advertising media stay on top of things by learning the talk of the trade. Memorize the following terms you might hear out in the advertising world:

• Quantitative Research: The number of people tuning in to a given station.

• Qualitative research: The kind of people tuning in to a given station.

• Cumulative audience: The total unduplicated media audience accumulated over a given period of time.

• Cumulative rating: The reach of a radio or television program or station, as opposed to the average rating.

• Ranker: A report showing a selected demographic audience of each station in a given market ranked from highest to lowest (for example, the number of women 18 to 35 who listen to each station in a market).

• Dayparts: Time periods throughout the day in which radio and television stations sell ads (for example, radio morning drive time, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. or TV prime time from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.).

• Column inch: A standard print media measurement; a 3-by-11-inch ad is 33 column inches (or a quarter page)

EventsHow To Negotiate When Planning Your Meeting Or Event by Merlissa(op): 10:28am On Aug 03, 2015
One of the most important skills any meeting and event planner must have is the ability to negotiate. Few things are set in stone, so unless you're planning an event around the Ten Commandments, you can negotiate price, perks, contract language. The basic rules of negotiating include the following:

• Start with a plan. Know exactly what you want.

• Do your homework. Understand the value of your business.

• Be methodical and meticulous. Make careful notes of everything discussed and agreed upon.

• Use bargaining power. Have another supplier in the wings to help influence negotiations.

• Avoid vague and confusing language.

• *Question preprinted contracts.

• Read the fine print.

• Insist on shared responsibility. Avoid any agreements that are one-sided.

• Assume nothing. Ask questions, more questions, and still more questions.

• Exercise silence. Be a champion listener.

Method

Step 1: Using your tape rule, measure the length and breath of the notebook and cut it out on the fabric. Remember to add extra 2 inches to your measurement eg of the length of the notebook is 5 and the breath is 10 you will cut out 7 by 12 (adding 2 inches to 5 and 10)

Step 2: After cutting out the required measurements, open out the cut fabric, then open the notebook to the last page on one side and place it on top of the fabric.

Nairaland GeneralHow A Guy Was Fired By One Of The Biggest Oil Companies In Nigeria by Merlissa(op): 4:23am On Aug 02, 2015
One word for this guy

Nedu is a manager in ( we will call the company X). He was recently transferred from his dept to head a new Dept, aviation.

As a manager, Nedu earns excellent salary, with all he perks of office. Lives on the Island, official car, etc. He is married with a kid.

Nedu went to Kenya for a training/course, not unusual in the oil/gas industry. When he arrived Kenya, he got there with his wife & child.

On getting to the hotel, he was told there was no arrangement for pairs, as the company booked & made arrangement for only him.

He was told to pay for upgrade if he wants his wife and kid to be accommodated. Greedy man, he stupidly claimed he didn’t come with cash.

Mistake number one was made. A call was made to the MD of CompX in Kenya, who in turn called MD CompX in Nigeria to report the issue.

When the MD in nigeria was notified, he called Nedu and asked why he had to go to Kenya with his family when he was sent alone?

Nedu claimed his family is young family blablabla. His MD was shocked. It was just a few days course not a year furlough…

Sadly the call to Nigeria triggered a hidden problem. The MD in Nigeria, an European by the way, recalled that Nedu recently had a query.

Perhaps the MD might not have recalled the query, but a foolish man would always think himself wiser than everybody…

Just paying $50 per day to upgrade his room might have helped but Nedu didn’t want to pay. CompX in Kenya was asked to pay & upgrade him.

ComX in Kenya paid on the understanding that Nigeria will reimburse them since arrangements were not made for more than one person.

you would think Nedu was done with folly, naaa, the idiot had more stupidity up his sleeves… Upon returning to Nigeria after the course.

Nedu tendered receipts for taxi & other in-country cab expenses, unknown to him, his hotel escapades had made both MDs to talk about him.

The Kenya MD informed the Nigerian one that they picked Nedu up with a company car at the airport and also dropped him off when he left.

He was made to face a disciplinary panel on charges of fraud and forgery. Recall that he might have or might not have alerted his boss.

In nigeria if he had simply left his wife at home for just a few days or paid for her hotel bill, but his “smartness” exposed him.

To cut a long story short, Nedu was fired for forgery, the MD said he might have overlooked his his hotel brouhaha, but forgery is a NO.

Nedu is now at home with a wife and a daughter. His wife, by the way does not work.
May greed and over smartness not be our undoing in life…

End of story…

BusinessHow To Market To Produce More Sales by Merlissa(op): 9:43am On Jul 31, 2015
Successful marketing produces profitable sales. Here are some ideas for those moments when you decide you really need to concentrate on how to boost sales to a higher level:

• Sell to super customers. Someone who writes a blog about your industry, gets quoted in an industry magazine, or presents at an industry conference is a super customer (that is, someone who influences many other buyers). Win him or her over, and the rest of the market tends to follow.

• Make a limited-time, free-trial offer. This tried-and-true formula moves product better than anything else, because people love a chance to try something before they have to commit. (The smartest thing any car dealer can do to make a sale is say, “Would you like a test drive?”) Get your product in potential customers’ hands and grow your market each time someone decides to keep it. But set time limits to help control redemption rates because online offers sometimes get picked up and promoted by bloggers, bumping up redemption above your budgeted level.

• Hire more salespeople on commission. Old-fashioned face-to-face selling is still effective in business-to-business and wholesale industries (which make up the majority of businesses). Sign up sales representatives who are willing to work for a commission. Double the number of sales calls, and you’re bound to score more business.

• Create a parallel distribution channel. For example, if you don’t already sell on the web, start your own web store or set up shop as a store and auctioneer on eBay. (eBay is great for businesses with any fairly straightforward consumer product because there’s so much customer traffic to tap into. Amazon is also a good place to market, with greater customer reach than any other.)

• Bundle your product with one or several complementary products and offer a special package deal. The right bundle may boost sales dramatically, especially if you make it a limited-time offer. For example, combine an art pad, a box of drawing pens, a short booklet on drawing favorite Anime characters, and a watercolor set, and you have a great holiday gift idea. Alone, none of those products would likely jump off the shelf.

• Send monthly postcards or e-mails with discount codes, special offers, or announcements. A postcard is an inexpensive form of direct mail. If you have a good customer list, use it at least once a month. The more you reach out to your customer base, the more it’ll buy what you’re selling.

Business5 Ways To Boost Results With Creativity by Merlissa(op): 10:10am On Jul 30, 2015
Marketing can do amazing things for a business if the process is creative and innovative. Here are some simple techniques to add creative energy to all your marketing efforts:

• Brainstorming: Think of 100 new ideas for marketing your business and then use the best 10, or even just the best one. Just do something new and exciting every now and then to keep things fresh!

• Analogies: Think of products that your product is similar to and tell the customer (or potential customer) why. This famous creativity exercise adds insight and interest to your marketing communications. For instance, instead of saying, “Our cleaning services are 100% reliable,” you could say, “Having us clean your office is like moving into a brand-new building every week!”

• Pass-along: Write a simple sales or marketing idea on a piece of paper or in an e-mail and then pass that idea along to someone else with the instruction that he or she should add to it or list another idea. Keep circulating the paper or e-mail until your coworkers or friends have helped you generate a long list of ideas and options to choose from.

• Question assumptions: Make a list of stupid questions and take the time to ask people what they think. “Why do you have to have branches to be in the banking business?” is a good example of a “stupid” question that may lead to a breakthrough marketing concept. And in fact, there’s such a thing as direct banking, in which the bank avoids retail branches and their high costs. Could you, if you work in a conventional bank, start a direct-banking division and double your bank’s size without the need for bricks and mortar?

• Rewriting: Good ol’ editing and rewriting can lead you to better marketing communications. In fact, rewriting opens more creative doors than any other technique. Take a copy of a brochure, and make yourself come up with five new headlines or titles that you can use for the cover. You’ll probably come up with at least one headline that’s much more striking and interesting than the existing one.
