Pandemonium rocked the Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, on Wednesday after a protest turned tragic, two students reportedly killed while several others injured.

Reports gathered that it all started when an ND 2 student of Accountancy department was knocked down and killed by a vehicle using one way on Tuesday.

The aggrieved students, on Wednesday, blocked the main road in a peaceful protest demanding the state government to install speed bumps on the road.

The protest reportedly took another dimension when the security operatives called to calm the scene reportedly teargas and bullets in the air and at the students.


Speaking to newsmen, the Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Student Union Government (SUG), Jafaru Habibu, explained that “the incident has been reoccurring in the school for sometime because we have lost a lot of students and this sparked a lot of reactions from students and we decided to embark on a peaceful protest.”

”While they were protesting the loss of their student on the Lafia- Akwanga highway, the police shot two of their students of which one died instantly while the other one has been rushed to the hospital.

”We are always paying all the fees the institution ask us to pay so they should also meet our demands, government has continued to turn deaf ears to our plea of constructing bumps along the school road,” he added.

The Registrar of the Polytechnic, Labani Joseph, said that the management had earlier appealed to the students to shelve their protest and go back to class saying that the management of the institution promised to look into the matter but the students paid deaf ears to their pleas.

He explained that, when the protest got to its peak, they had to invite the security operatives to calm down the situation, which led to the gun duel between the students and security operatives.

The Registrar, however, pronounced that, the school has been closed down indefinitely as a result of the crises.

We hear that the actor was severely burnt on the set of Behind the Wheels in Lekki, Lagos yesterday when a fire scene went horribly wrong.

Confusion ensued and despite efforts to use fire extinguishers to put the fire under control, the tragedy could not be averted.

A Nollywood insider tells us, ‘I think it’s a stunt to promote the new movie because Nigerian actors and directors are not so daring to set fire on themselves’.

Another source said ‘the director, Stanlee Ohikhuare can be very eccentric. This shot should have been left out. We tried it first about three weeks ago and the fire did not light well’.

The injured actor was reportedly rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he has been placed under emergency care.

This morning, the pastor of a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) branch in Isawo, Ikorodu was abducted by gunmen who initially dressed like people who come to church for service. Read the details:

Dear Metronaija... A RCCG pastor was kidnapped this morning 7.00am 24th July 2016 at his church in Santos bus stop Isawo. The workers meeting always take place before the day service and the Pastor has to be in church much earlier.

He was busy preparing for the meeting when suddenly some people came in dressed in beautiful attire and they were taken to be members who had come to worship. It was not until they pulled out guns before it dawn on us that they are the Ijaw militants...

A 50-year old man identified as Bello Abdullahi was on Wednesday, July 21, arrested by the Sokoto State Police Command and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for allegedly impersonating Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

Parading the suspect before news men in Sokotoon Thursday, the Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Babangida Dutsin-Ma, said the Abdullahi was arrested after extorting N20,000 from an Islamic Cleric.

According to the commandant, the suspect, claiming to be Gov. Tambuwal, had called the unsuspecting cleric that he would be included in a high powered proposed State Committee on Religious Affairs. He asked the victim to provide N20,000, for the provision of a certificate to qualify him for the membership of the proposed committee."He also called his victim, asking for another N 5,000 for registration and eventual inclusion in the proposed faked committee.

So, it was at that time that the victim became suspicious, reported the matter to us and we swung into action.'' Dutsin-Ma.The suspect had sent another person to collect the initial N20,000 and that was when he was arrested, added the commandant."It was after the arrest of the errand man that he led us to where the fake Gov. Tambuwal was domiciled. We immediately arrested him, and we will charge him to court after the conclusion of our investigations."

No fewer than 50 houses were submerged in Kano following a heavy flood that wreaked havoc within the Kano metropolis as a result of early morning heavy down-pour on Monday.

Metronaija reports that the areas badly touched by the ravaging flood include Hotoro, Badawa and Makarwa, all within the metropolitan Kano.
As at the time of filing this report, the authorities of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were yet to comeout with an official figure of the victims of the flood who have been rendered homeless.However, an official of NEMA told Metronaiaja that hundreds of residents besieged their office on Monday claiming victims of the flood incident.He added that NEMA will soon release the official figure of the victims affected by the flood.

Metronaija reports that Kano has remained a major casualty of flood in recent years, a situation which the state government has continued to manage through support to victims and enlightenment programmes on the dangers of erecting structures on drainage andwater-ways.

Following the aggressive Anti-smuggling activities embarked upon by the Unit in its attempt to re-define its mandate for a paradigm shift, a total of Four hundred and Ninety Four (494) different Seizures of prohibited/offending goods were effected by the Unit during the period under reference. A breakdown of the report is as follows:

1) RICE: A total of Twenty two thousand, seven hundred and sixty three (22,763) bags of 50kg parboiled rice was intercepted; valued at One Hundred and Thirteen Million, Nine Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira (N113,940,000.00) Only with a payable duty of Thirty Four Million, One Hundred and Eighty Two Thousand Naira (N34,182,000.00) Only and a DPV of One Hundred and Forty Eight Million, One Hundred and Twenty Two Thousand Naira (N148,122,000.00) Only.

The Unit also apprehended one hundred and twenty six (126) suspects in connection with the Seizures during the same period. Generally speaking and in totality, the Unit recorded four hundred and ninety four (494) different remarkable Seizures as indicated above, valued at Seven Hundred and Two Million, Sixty Thousand, Six Hundred and Fifty Naira (N702,060,650.00) Only with a payable duty of One Hundred and Eighty Six Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Two Thousand, Five Hundred and Forty Naira (N186,252,540.00) Only with a total DPV of Eight Hundred And Eighty Eight Million, Three Hundred And Thirteen Thousand, One Hundred And Ninety Naira (N888,313,190.00) Only.

Similarly, the Controller confirmed that over Three Hundred and Twelve Million, Eight Hundred and Seventy Thousand, Two Hundred and Ninety Five Naira (N312,870,295.00) Only, was recovered through the various interventions during the same period.
In addition, the Controller noted that some of the seized items contravened sections 46 & 47 of the Customs & Excise Management Act CAP C45 LFN 2004; which are on “FORFEITURE OF GOODS IMPROPERLY IMPORTED” AS WELL AS “PENALTY FOR IMPROPER IMPORTATION OF GOODS ETC”.

A comparative analysis with 2015 corresponding report of the same period under review, the Federal Operations Unit in 2015 recorded one thousand and thirty seizures (1,030) with a duty paid value of N758, 271, 969. Whereas the number of seizures for 2015 appears higher, the quality of seizures in the first half of 2016 accounted for the improved duty paid.

The Customs Area Controller in Charge of the Unit, Comptroller Umar Yusuf, while saying said the sense of commitment and dedication to duty of officers’ enabled the achievements, gave assurances that the Command will keep up the tempo in the second part of the year.

He however revealed some challenges the Command have experienced despite achieving this feat in the first half of the year. According to him, hostility from economic saboteurs who are determined to smuggle illegal goods and volatility of areas officers patrol have been challenging for the Command.
