CareerRadio Bayelsa GM Flogs Four Officials by metronaija2(op): 6:13pm On Feb 23, 2017
Industrial dispute at Radio Bayelsa, christened Glory FM, has distorted its operation as the General Manager, John Idumange, flogged four staffs on duty, however some report had said the staffers were whipped by suspected thugs.

The Radio Bayelsa Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Radio Television and Theatre Arts Workers Unions (RATTAWU) consequently shut the radio station.

Briefing newsmen on Thursday in Yenogoa, NUJ Chairman in Radio Bayelsa, Tonye Yemoleigha, said that he and three female staff were caned by the General Manager of the Station.

“Four of us, myself and three female staff were flogged by Idumange himself. The report that it was thugs is inaccurate. It was the General Manager himself. The blisters on the skin are more severe for the ladies.

“We have reported the matter to the Ekeki Police Division and sought medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. Workers have been constantly intimidated and threatened.

“John Angese, Bayelsa Council Chairman of NUJ who is a staff of Radio Bayelsa has also been threatened with a sack, we are all being victimized for insisting that the General Manager complies with Public Service rules.

“We have been under siege since the General Manager was appointed in December 2016. We are not opposed to repositioning the station which is in our interest but we want the procedure to follow due process,” Yemoleigha said.

He added that workers of the station are not opposed to staff redeployment, but the unions should also be part of the process to ensure that the best hands are not sacrificed on the altar of nepotism, sentiment or witch-hunt.

“We are also aware of the alleged over N5 million naira payroll fraud which Idumange claimed to have uncovered and has referred to the Police for investigation.

“Ordinarily, in line with established procedures, an Investigative Panel should have been instituted to look into the matter and come up with a report with which management would act as appropriate.

“All these are expressly spelt out in the Public Service Rules; however, we are requesting for a copy of the police report after their investigation.

“We have asked management to properly discipline everyone involved in an established case of running the salary of a staff who resigned with effect from August 2016,” he explained.

Idumange, however, dismissed the allegations that he flogged staffs of the station, saying that the unions were being used to sabotage his efforts at re-positioning the station which was in a deplorable state before his appointment.

According to him, there was no going back on his reform efforts as they have received the blessings of the supervising Bayelsa Ministry of Information.

“This small radio station has 346 workers; employment and job placement have never followed due process, we are currently reorganizing the place and they are resisting our efforts.

“Those ghost workers must be fished out and the payroll cleaned up. The wage bill of the station is N35 million monthly and it is not sustainable. My predecessor incurred a debt of N40 million.

“The unions are being instigated by the Heads of Department affected in the illegal recruitment, and those who came into that place through the back door,” he said.

PoliticsAmerica Pumps N400bn Into Nigeria For Electricity by metronaija2(op): 1:33pm On Feb 15, 2017
Hope for stable electricity is in horizon as the United States government said yesterday it plans to invest $1 billion, about N400 billion on the power sector.

America plans to make the investment through its Power Africa Initiative.

Coordinator of Power Africa, Andrew Herscowitz told a news conference in Abuja that the the U.S. was committed to strengthening the power sector in Nigeria, adding that America has already committed billions of dollars in funding the nation’s energy projects.

Launched by President Barack Obama in 2013, `Power Africa’ aims to increase electricity access, by adding more than 30,000 megawatts of cleaner, more efficient energy development in sub-Saharan Africa.

Herscowitz said the project also targets unlocking the substantial wind, solar, hydro power, natural gas, biomass, and geothermal resources on the continent.

“Since Power Africa was launched, U.S. Trade Development Agency has committed approximately 6.5 million dollars in funding for 10 activities supporting Nigeria’s energy sector, which could leverage up to 2.7 billion dollars in investment.

“It has advanced 50 million dollars in financing from the Oversea Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) to Lumos, a Nigeria-based solar energy company, to scale up it’s off grid solar power service to about 200,000 Nigerian homes and businesses.

“Power Africa has supported power companies in the country to the tune of 100 million dollars capital expenditure credit enhancement facility with a corresponding 6.5 million dollars in technical assistance

“And (supported) another 1.5 million dollars for limited commodity to turn around the DISCOS,” he said.

He said that functional power distribution companies were critical to the development of the country.

According to him, well functioning DISCOs are critical to the delivery of electricity in Nigeria.

“If the DISCOs do not work, the energy sector as a whole does not work.”

He said Nigeria, like any country, needed to see capital flowing through the entire energy value chain

PoliticsIGP Orders Closure Of Ondo Assembly by metronaija2(op): 1:04pm On Feb 06, 2017
Mr Malachi Coker, the Acting Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, on Monday said the police had sealed the Assembly over its leadership crisis.

Coker told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure that the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, ordered indefinite closure of the Assembly.

The Assembly, had on Friday, Jan. 27, impeached the Speaker, Ms Jumoke Akindele, and other principal officers over allegation of N15 million fraud.

NAN reports that the sum of N15 million was allegedly found on the Assembly’s Pay Master, Mr Makanjuola Adesina, who told the lawmakers that it was withdrawn on the instruction of the Speaker for a project which he failed to disclose.

Coker told NAN that the Assembly had adjourned sitting indefinitely following the police action.

“For now, the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, has directed that the Assembly should be locked.

“On Friday, Feb, 3, the police brought a warrant that the Assembly should be locked indefinitely and that was after the House had adjourned its sitting at a plenary held on Thursday, Feb. 2.

“We hope the police will not be bias in their actions by allowing the impeached Speaker’s faction to have access into the Assembly,’’ he said.

On the impeachment of the Speaker and other principal officers, Coker said that 20 out of the 26 members of the Assembly signed the impeachment notice.

“For clarification, it takes 18 members to sign the impeachment notice, while 10 members can sit in the Assembly to pronounce it and this time around 20 members signed the impeachment notice.

“About seven members backed out after they had signed the impeachment notice following pressure from the power that be.

“We all plan the impeachment together, but as human beings, some claimed they were not in the Assembly when the impeachment was to be carried out,’’ the acting speaker said.

He appealed to members of the Assembly to come together and work for the interest of the state and not for individual’s interest or pecuniary gains.

PoliticsObanikoro Returns Another N30m; To Pay Up N417m by metronaija2(op): 8:06am On Feb 02, 2017
A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has returned a fresh sum of N30m to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, with a promise to pay a balance of N417m.

According to Punch, Koro, as he is fondly called has now in total returned N167m to the Federal Government which he paid from his Diamond Bank account to the EFCC Recovered Funds Account.

The source stated, “I can confirm that Senator Obanikoro has been meeting up his part of the agreement. You will recall that last year, he promised to return a certain amount of money every quarter.

“He has made a payment of N30m, his first instalment in 2017. He is also reporting at the EFCC as he should.”

The ex-minister, who returned to Nigeria in October 2016, after spending about 15 months in the United States, was accused of receiving N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

Obanikoro had said in his statement of oath at the EFCC that after receiving the money in 2014, he gave N1.219bn to the then governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, while N1.3bn was given to the PDP governorship candidate in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

He also confessed to giving Fayose a separate $5.377m at Spotless Hotel in Ekiti State in the presence of party stalwarts, including the then PDP state secretary, Mr. Tope Aluko.

Obanikoro was said to have kept about N785m for himself, which he allegedly spent while campaigning ahead of the PDP governorship primary in Lagos State, which Mr. Jimi Agbaje won.

However, the EFCC asked him to return about N584m, out of which he has returned N167m.

At the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, Mr. Alade Sunday, a manager at Zenith Bank, narrated how Obanikoro delivered about N1.219bn to Fayose’s aide, Abiodun Agbele, for onward transmission to Fayose.

He had added that it took the cashiers about 10 days to count all the money.

Sunday had said Obanikoro flew the cash to Akure airport and the money was loaded onto bullion vans.

“When we got to the airport, we waited for some minutes before the aircraft arrived. When the aircraft offloaded its passengers, one of them appeared to me to be Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and the other one appeared to be his ADC, Adewale.

“Agbele walked up to them and had a discussion with them. Thereafter, he signalled to me to bring the van. Bags loaded with cash were loaded into the van and Obanikoro’s ADC, I and Agbele drove back to the bank,” he had stated.

PoliticsThey Sponsored Protests Against Jonathan,why Can't I Protest With 2face?- Fayose by metronaija2(op): 8:19pm On Feb 01, 2017
Governor Ayo Fayose has responded to widespread condemnation following his decision to join the Tuface Idibia anti-government protest.

READ: #IStandWithNigeria Protest Is Against You – Nigerians React To Fayose's Support

Fayose's response is contained in a statement posted on Facebook by his media aide, Lere Olayinka. Read statement below:

The blogosphere is now in flame just because Governor Ayo Fayose declared his support for Tuface's rally slated for Monday February 6th 2017.

The APC online supporters have warned Tuface against allowing opposition politicians to join the protest. The hypocrisy of these APC people is legendary!

Anyway, for the sake of clarity, Fayose only declared support for the rally being an opposition figure! However, If Fayose is one of those bankrolling the protest, so be it!!! I want to say without any fear or favour that 90% of protests staged against Goodluck Jonathan government had financial support from Bourdillon and APC controlled states and I stand corrected.

When Tinubu and APC Governors were bankrolling Actors and Actresses such as 9ice (Who later served as Special Adviser to APC Gov. Ajimobi in Oyo), Ronke Oshodi Oke (She’s a member of APC transition committee in Ondo), Dayo Adeneye D1 (current Commissioner for Information in Ogun State) Desmond Elliot (now a member of Lagos State House of Assembly), Jide Josoko (Veteran APC Reps Aspirant from Lagos) etc to stage protest against Jonathan's government, heaven did not fall.

All the aforementioned entertainers were at Freedom Park, Ojota in January 2012 for one week, singing against Jonathan in the presence of Pastor Tunde Bakare of the CPC (now APC) and Dino Melaye; and Heaven did not fall then.

Those of you making noise today applauded anti-Jonathan protesters and the opposition politicians supporting them. The then Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi in particular gave N10 million to Occupy Naija members in Ado-Ekiti. So why should Fayose's case be different?

Foreign AffairsU.S. Companies Protest Trump’s Travel Ban by metronaija2(op): 2:09pm On Jan 30, 2017
A group of U.S. companies, including Starbucks, Tesla and Uber, on Monday voiced concern over Donald Trump’s recent executive order suspending refugee admissions and banning citizens of seven majority-Muslim nations from entering the country.

Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz, wrote to employees with “deep concern and a heavy heart” about the executive order from the U.S. president two days earlier.

Schultz said he would hire 10,000 refugees over the next five years at Starbucks businesses worldwide.

“We will start this effort here in the U.S. by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel,’’ he said.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to twitter to voice his concern about Trump’s new executive order.

“The blanket entry ban on citizens from certain primarily Muslim countries is not the best way to address the country’s challenges.

“Many people negatively affected by this policy are strong supporters of the U.S. They’ve done right, not wrong and don’t deserve to be rejected,’’ he added.

CEO Travis Kalanick said that Uber would be supporting all of its drivers who are citizens of the countries named but who were currently stuck outside the U.S. because of the president’s “unjust immigration ban.”

And Jamie Dimon, the company chairman of America’s biggest bank JPMorgan Chase, also said that employees would be supported if they were affected.

Dimon, Kalanick and Musk are all members of Donald Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum, a group of business people called together by the president to advise him on economic policy.

According to the sender of the video, the woman flared up after arriving the gym around 6am to find that there was no light and the generator was not put on. She got mad that they basically wasted her time. She actually slapped the gym instructor twice while pouring water on the gym equipment. Shame on you, lady. That's not how to behave. Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday, attended the the valedictory court session held in honour of the outgoing Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice Cromwell Osamwonyi Idahosa, at High Court 1, in Benin City.

This was made known in the pictures and post shared by Gloria Eluebo Adagbon few hours ago.

The governor while delivering his speech at the occasion announced that his administration has orchestrated an increase in capital expenditure of the judiciary from 280 million last year to 1.8 billion this year.

The move constitutes a 15.56% increase set aside by the governor to improve the infrastructure of courts in the state.

Governor Obaseki promised to facilitate the location of an Industrial Court in Benin City, as well as relocate the Court of Appeal from its current premises to a better one close to the High Court.

The governor also disclosed that his government is holding talks with the Ministry of Interior to acquire the prison at Sapele road and relocate it in order to expand the court premises.

Obaseki who lauded the achievements of the outgoing Chief Judge stated that all the steps his government had taken so far, was due to the hard work done by Hon. Justice Idahosa, and the confidence the government had in his person.

He expressed confidence in the credibility of the incoming judge, Justice Esohe Ikponwen, and described her as a “straightforward jurist”.
