29-year-old Suwaiba Yunusa is the only female teacher at Janbulo Islamiyya Primary School in Roni, Jigawa State. "There aren’t many female teachers in the state so we are fortunate to have even one." says Headmaster Shaaibu Hassan. Some of the male teachers said that as as the only female member of staff, Suwaiba is far more than just another teacher. "When they know there is a female teacher in the school, parents are easily convinced to send their girls to school," says one teacher. "When the girls see her coming sometimes they start chanting her name. I think it’s because they are so happy to see someone who is like them," says another. Speaking to the Global Partnership for Education, Suwaiba said: "In our culture, it is inappropriate for male teachers to help the older girls one on one; they are also limited in their ability to discipline the older girls. But a female teacher—like a mother—can discipline a child of any gender and any age. " She is also on hand to deal with the expected challenges that come up around older girls and menstruation that her male colleagues only laughed nervously about. But Suwaiba recognizes that perhaps her most important function is as a role model. "Growing up I had two women teachers. I remember thinking I wanted to be like them. Now I am. So I know how important it is when the girls come up to me and say, ‘When I grow up I want to be a teacher like you." "Last year, I was so happy. There were two other female teachers assigned to this school. We would work together to do exercises with the children. We would meet between classes and talk about whatever problems we faced in the classroom. This year, because there are so few female teachers around, they were transferred to other schools. Now, honestly, I don’t enjoy coming to school anymore. I feel so lonely and isolated. The male teachers all sit together and talk in the shade. Culturally, there is no way I can sit and talk with them. And there is no staff room where I can go and sit. So between classes I just wander here and there by myself with no one to talk to. I am thinking about leaving. I told the headmaster that if they can’t bring in another female teacher soon, I want to transfer to another school" http://www.metronaija.com/2016/11/suwaiba-yunusa-teacher-roniu-jigawa-janbulo-islamiya.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44

Passengers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport got more than they bargained for this morning as the Nigerian Air Force conducted a simulation exercise on counter terrorism. No fewer than three persons sustained injuries during the exercise among whom was an old woman on a wheel chair, apparently travelling outside the country. Just as the mock terrorists stormed the airport and started shooting sporadically, she fell from her wheelchair and allegedly broke her teeth. Another traveller, a young woman in her 30s flung her baby away in the heat of the pandemonium that ensued, before diving for cover. She later reunited with her baby when she was told that it was just a mock exercise and that the bullets being expended were blank bullets. Also an airport staff a man in his late 50s collapsed on the sound of sporadic gunshots from the the mock terrorists. All the wounded persons were attended to by medical staff of the Nigerian Air Force hospital and members of the Lagos State Ambulance Services. The passengers said they were not informed of the exercise and thought it was a real situation and that terrorist had taken over the airport. Airport officials told journalists that passengers were duly informed as an announcement were continuously being made to inform passengers of the exercise. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/11/naf-terrorism-training-lagos.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44

Nigeria loses N127billion to cybercrimes yearly, an expert with the Department for International Development (DFID) Prof. Olu Ogunshakin, said yesterday in Abuja. Speaking at a workshop on Cybercrime and Forensic Investigation, Ogunshakin who represented the DFID, said the impact of cybercrime on the ecobnomy was monumental. Ogunsakin said: “The impact of cybercrime on Nigeria is so vast that annually, we lose about N127billion to criminals that use the internet to sabotage the economy. I think this will continue to rise until the government and security agencies come together to find a way to curb the menace. “We should make sure that the public is quite aware of the impact of cybercrime because it is something that is borderless and it affects everybody and somebody irrespective of location. “This crime is borderless and it is something that affects the economy especially the infrastructure that we are trying to develop and in turn it affects everything.” He said Nigeria can curb the menace if it develops cyber technique on how to eradicate the growing menace, adding that there is need to collaborate with countries that have strategies. “All over the world, you will also realise that a lot of countries are suffering from it; so we need to collaborate with people because as of now, we do not have a national strategy on how to deal with this crime and we need to start from somewhere,” he said. Also speaking, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris said the Force was also worried about the spate of the crime. Represented by AIG Umaru Shehu, Idris said: “The criminals are constantly looking for ways to take advantage of the loopholes in the new cyber technology. They devote more energy and resources into committing national and international crime that are difficult to prevent and detect. “These criminals are well organised and are willing to invest in modern technology so that they can commit identity theft and privacy invasion, fraudulent electronic transaction, cause havoc through insertion of computer virus and malware infections in personal and corporate computers to get upper hand or blackmail and distributed denial of service attack. “More worrisome, is the radicalisation and violent extremism, terrorism perpetrated through cyberspace, website hacking and defacement. “Compared to traditional crime where criminals can rob one or two banks in a day, ICT has made it possible to rob hundreds of banks in less than an hour, while the perpetrators sit comfortably in their homes or offices http://www.metronaija.com/2016/10/nigeria-loses-n127b-yearly-to-cybercrime.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
