TV/MoviesSenate To Probe DSTV by metroparrot(op): 8:11am On Feb 25, 2016

The Senate yesterday said it will investigate Multichoice Nigeria, a subsidiary of South African-based Multichoice Africa, owners of DSTV over alleged unwholesome practices, unreasonable subscription hikes across their various bouquets, which have led to growing public complaints and petitions.

Adopting a two-prayer motion moved by Senator Isah Misau (APC Bauchi Central) titled “Concern on Unwholesome Practices by Multichoice Nigeria,” (DSTV), the Senate directed the Committees on Information and Trade and Investment to investigate and consider summoning the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC).

The Senate also mandated the Committee on Information to organise a public hearing for all stakeholders including relevant civil societies to foster a way forward.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, noted that “we must play our role to ensure that we protect Nigerians and ensure that the best global practices are what is happening in our own country so I would want the committees as directed to look into the matter particularly to ensure that the CPC played the role they should play in ensuring that the rights of Nigerians are always protected.”

He therefore asked the committees to report back within four weeks.
Misau noted that in the past few years, DSTV has constantly been caught in one litigation after another from aggrieved subscribers, who were dissatisfied with the programming service and unreasonable subscription hikes across their various bouquets.

He explained that the motion is of public interest as football loving Nigerians follow the English Premier League (EPL) on DSTV with the company enjoying the monopoly of broadcast in the country.

The lawmaker explained that the complaints include arbitrary increase in the subscription charges, refusal to adopt the pay as you use model applicable in other climes where Multichoice operates, amongst others.

According to Misau, it is imperative to intervene with a view to addressing the perceived high handedness of the pay TV company.Supporting the motion, Deputy Senate Leader, Ibn Na’Allah said the significance of the motion is to bring to fore that the monopoly being enjoyed by DSTV does not help any growing economy in any country.

“People must not be allowed to take what is not due to them irrespective of where they operate, people must operate within the laws of the country and Nigerians must be protected on the way and manner people operate their business in this country.

PoliticsFayose Begs PDP Members To Support Sheriff by metroparrot(op): 6:01am On Feb 23, 2016
As anger grows in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over the appointment of Ali Modu Sheriff as National Chairman, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State on Monday called for support from stakeholders.

He said their support was needed for the party to meet its desired goal of taking the mantle of leadership from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

“His (Sheriff’s) emergence at this time is the best thing in the present circumstance and those aggrieved should sheath their sword and deploy their time and resources into fighting the All Progressives Congress (APC) instead of their own party,” Fayose begged.

“It is regrettable that those who abandoned the PDP to its fate when it lost power and did not say a word to defend the party have now found their voice against a decision taken in accordance with the party’s constitution.

“With my antecedents as someone who has always defended the party, I can’t be linked with any decision that will not be in the best interest of the party.

“I therefore call on all my admirers and believers in my dogged fight for the revival of our party to support our new chairman, whom I believe has the required capacity to reposition the party,” he added in a statement released by his media aide, Lere Olayinka.

He described those linking the new chairman with Boko Haram insurgents as mischief makers, asking; “has Ali Modu Sheriff been tried and convicted by any court for sponsoring Boko Haram? Is he even being tried for involvement in Boko Haram activities?

“Even APC Senator Ali Ndume is being tried for allegedly making contacts with the Boko Haram sect 73 times and he is still the Senate Leader.

“Also, Ali Modu Sheriff and their ‘Saint Buhari’ are in-laws courtesy of his (Sheriff) son’s marriage to Buhari’s daughter and no one has called the President a Boko Haram sponsor by association. Or are they also saying President Buhari could have allowed his own daughter to marry the son of Ali Modu Sheriff if he was indeed a Boko Haram sponsor?”

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, had consistently linked Sheriff with Boko Haram while other top chiefs of the party had rejected his emergence.

While describing the emergence of Ali Modu Sheriff as constitutional, Governor Fayose said all stakeholders like the National Working Committee members, governors, senators, House of Representatives members, Board of Trustees members and others took part in the processes that
produced the new chairman.

He said the party could only be repositioned when decisions of the party leaders are respected, calling on those aggrieved with the emergence of the chairman to be mindful of the supremacy of the party over and above other interests.

The governor reminded members and supporters of the PDP that “the party was in a peculiar situation and we need people who can stand up against these devourers of our collective heritage.

“I can say it confidently that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is such a person and in the collective interest of our party, we should all rally round him.”

TravelPHOTOS: Nigerian Student And Two Other African Students Die In A Fatal Crash by metroparrot(op): 5:33am On Feb 23, 2016
A Nigerian student and two other African students of Manchester University, UK, died and a fourth injured when a van driven by a man who authorities say was intoxicated struck them on Sunday, February 21.

Deangelo R. Evans is facing charges in connection with the crash. The 26-year-old from Chicago, was charged with three counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, one count of OWI resulting in serious bodily injury, and three counts of reckless homicide.

The crash happened shortly before 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes near mile marker 253. According to the Grant County Sheriff's Department, it appears that the students' van was stopped in the median with a flat tire. Seven people were standing outside when another van that was headed north on I-69 left the road and went into the median, striking four of the students.

The victims, all international students have been identified as Nerad Grace Mangai from Jos, Nigeria, (find her photos above) Brook M. Dagnew and Kirubel Alemayehu Hailu, from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Israel Solomon Tamire was taken by helicopter to Parkview Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne and is listed in critical condition.

Nebiyu Shiferaw Alemu, Amanuel Atsbha Gebreyohannes and Dagmawi Meseret Tadesse were not seriously hurt and have returned to campus. University officials say the students had been to Ball State and Taylor University prior to the accident.

"We have an intercultural center and our students have begun to gather there. We have counselors there, staff and friends there. It's going to be a long process. We anticipate having services on campus for the students. We've notified parents and it's a matter of those students being able to be together and to support one another," said David McFadden, President, Manchester University.

A gathering was planned for Sunday night in Petersime Chapel at Manchester University for students, faculty and staff.

"For those wishing to provide support to the students and their families, in any form, you may send them to the President's office. We will be collecting and mailing cards and support to the families of the students lost this weekend. Monetary donations can be offered as well, more information will be provided as resources are confirmed. Thank you to all who have provided so much love and support in our community's time of grief" the University wrote on its Facebook page.

PoliticsNigerian Man On The Run After Stabbing A Ugandan Woman In India by metroparrot(op): 7:40am On Feb 16, 2016
Hennur police have launched a manhunt for a Nigerian man, identified only as Osas, for allegedly attacking 30-year-old Ugandan national Shakira Nsonko on February 10, in Bengalulu, India.
Osas, it is alleged, attacked her with a knife at an African eatery when she refused to pay for his drink. Hennur police have taken up the case under Section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 324 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon) against Osas, a resident of Kukkenahalli.

In her complaint, Shakira has stated that she was at the mess with a friend, Gifletin, when Osas asked her to buy him drinks. When she refused, he abused and slapped her, she has complained. To escape his continued assault, she locked herself in a room and called a friend, Tony. That did not deter Osas, who waited and slashed her with a knife when she ventured out of the room.

Passports and other documents of the two are being verified by the police. Consul of Rwanda, Mohan Suresh, who visited Shakira Nsonko, said that he wanted to ascertain if she was from Rwanda. He said the two knew each other, and that she was an illegal immigrant from Uganda.

Meanwhile, DCP Satish Kumar informed media that Shakira initially claimed she was involved in an accident in which she got hurt. It was only after doctors at MS Ramaiah Hospital informed the police that the wound could be the result of stabbing that she revealed the stabbing.

CelebritiesPHOTOS:The Actress,Chrystabel That Bite Actress Chineke On Her Lap On Set Speaks by metroparrot(op): 10:21pm On Feb 15, 2016
Two days ago, actress Princess Chineke alleged that actress, Chrystabel Goddy attacked her on set and bit her so hard it tore her skin and thigh muscle right off Chrystal wrote exclusively to us, telling her side of the story and sent in photos of her own supposed injuries. Read below...

Princess is a colleague whom I met on the set of a production. Out of respect to my contract, I shall refrain from naming the show. Despite her malicious and overbearing persona, I still tried to relate with her for purpose of the project that brought us together. I had complained about her untidy lifestyle and her troubles and even had to leave the room for another room when the original occupant had to leave for his home due to the fact that the hotel is noisy. On this day, the alternative room wasn't available to me and I had to put up with her in my room given to use to share. Prior to eventually sharing the room for the first time, I had told her that most times I get to relax after the day's job and activities later at night to respond to calls and text messages and that was just me prompting her out of courtesy and respect. Come on Linda, you have once shared a room with friends or sisters..If one isn't a bitter person, a phone call shouldn't offend you so much I mean especially if you can sleep in a hotel that has so much noise from the bar and she leaves the tv on! I turned it off the day I slept there.

So I was on the phone she was still awake laying her head and watching tv before she turned to sleep barely 5mins into her sleep, she wakes up yelling..i mean civil communication if honestly you're disturbed is fair enough but when I didn't respond, she turned on the music on her phone and to its loudest volume and put the phone right over my head, at this point I was so embarrassed. My friend who had called kept asking if everything was ok as he could hear her voice. I had to end the call. The following day I reported the issue.

Now , this day after the day's work. .We retired to our hotel and I only went downstairs to ask for help from the reception only for me to return to the room and she had moved to my side of the bed which we had agreed on that I stayed due to my phone calls and work. I write too and so I'm active on my phone hence my always busy mind. This is so much stress for me I've never been exposed in this way.

I asked her to please excuse me that I needed to lay my head after I had waited for her for about 15mins with my excuse for her been that she probably is going through messages she missed earlier unknown to me she'd had a fight upcoming. She responded bluntly saying that she's not moving from her spot. That it was hers before she gave it to me and I said exactly so it's no longer yours if you're not just a troublemaker. Princess is controlling and rude. She has a deep cut under her arm which she said was given to her by her cousin apparently this does tells how much of a problematic and incorrigible person she is. I have helped her to treat that deep cut and the production team bought her meds too.

On her response, I called the production manager to explain again that she's about to start again. When I dropped the phone, she started raining abuses on me and my family. She abused my dad at which point I lost control, because I lost my dad only just recently and the wound is still fresh in my heart. I held her mouth to cover it and make her shut up. She attacked me..scratching my face, neck and tearing the shirt I had on. She bit me on both hands and used her teeth to cut my gold bracelet. Upon this a senior colleague came in and separated us but when asked what happened she wouldn't explain without trying to make it juicy and insulting my family. I hold family dearly. I am a private person and I respect people's families too. She inflicted more injuries on me she pulled my natural hair a wig or weave. My natural hair...I have them here. I was advised not to lose them. Her bites on me are here i can send you pictures. Its unfortunate that she's looking for sympathy in trying to tarnish my name. The injury she sustained was out of defence and I have since apologized. An apology which she refused to acknowledge.

Regardless of the what had transpired, I still took the pain to apologise to her but apparently she's unforgiven and vengeful my only vengeance is this piece because God knows how to protect his own and I know that she intend to shame me bit it'd turn around for my fame. I won't be angry over the lesbian accusation. A clean heart fears none. I have never kissed a girl in my life. I would never think of going to blackmail an individual. Several folks have hurt me but life goes on. My consolation is that I've been on a few sets and there are folks who can attest to my conduct. However, I forgive her for this and I hold no grudge. I have apologised for the wound because I should have stayed I control and not get furious which is my first but we're humans and we all have our most stretched points. After a stressful day one doesn't need a troublemaker as a flat mate or roommate. I think that if my calls disturbed her as she claims she could ha e gotten herself a room as a big girl she had bragged to be. I don't complain about her calls. Even when she messes up the room, I quietly clean it and ensure the rest of the job is done by the housekeepers of the hotelSo coming out to seek sympathy is actually devilish. She almost killed me by pulling my hair and yet I apologised after I felt sad that I inflicted such pain. Every one who has worked with called to say it can't be me

This is what really happened.‎

PoliticsInterpol Set To Declare Former VP Sambo Wanted by metroparrot(op): 1:15pm On Feb 07, 2016
The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) may soon be declaring former Vice President, Namadi Sambo wanted.

UK reports have it that a very top official in the Ministry of Justice said that if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC receives the blessing of the presidency to that effect, the letters to the Interpol will go out not later than Tuesday.

The top official said, “The letters would be sent to Interpol by Tuesday, we are only waiting for the president to give approval. You know we can’t do such without getting the presidency involved.

“They are the people that will still facilitate the extradition of these people. Some of them are not just anybody, and it will look as if we are treating them as common criminals.

“Our former oga is also among them and these people have some international connections, so we have to thread cautiously.

“We gave them a lot of opportunity to come back home and defend themselves, but they have not been forthcoming. We have spoken with some of them, but they are just giving excuses.

“Once the president gives the approval, we will have no choice than to move against them through the Interpol. They will surely bring them back home and that will even be more disastrous for them, because no court will grant them bail, after seeing that they are trying to evade justice.”

TravelOperations Of Bristow Helicopter Suspended By NCAA by metroparrot(op): 3:22pm On Feb 04, 2016
Following Wednesday's controlled ditching of a Bristow Helicopter, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended the operation of the Bristow Helicopters Limited's Sikorsky S-76X++ type till further notice.

The Helicopter ditched inside the high sea around 10 a.m on Wednesday with 11 passengers including two crew members on board.

Daily Trust reports that it is the same type of Helicopter also operated by the company that was involved in a crash on August the 12th, 2015 killing six of the 12 souls on board.

Due to frequency of the crash involving the aircraft type, the NCAA decided to wield the big stick and suspended the operation of the series to enable it carry out a full scale audit on its operations with particular emphasis on its Sikorsky S- 76C++ type.

Director General of NCAA, Capt. Mukhtar Usman who briefed newsmen at the NCAA annex at Murtala Mohammed International Airport said the authority viewed "with utmost seriousness the successive mishaps of Bristow Helicopters' operating aircraft Sikorsky S- 76C++ on the coastal waters of Lagos".

He however explained that the suspension of operations of the company does not represent a vote of no confidence on the company but to ascertain the adequacy and propriety of the operating aircraft type.

"This is not new in the industry, it is one of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) all over the world", Usman said.

He said the decision was without prejudice to the ongoing investigation of Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), adding that the authority would fully support the bureau in its investigation.

Sikorsky S- 76 aircraft is an American medium - size commercial utility Helicopter manufactured by the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. It features twin turbo shaft engines; four- blades, main and tail rotors with a retractable landing gear.

PoliticsDasukigate: Leadership Newspaper Returns N9 Million by metroparrot(op): 10:27am On Jan 30, 2016
The management of Leadership Holdings Limited, publishers of Leadership newspapers, has returned the N9m it received from the office of former National Security Adviser through the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria as compensation for the seizure of its publications in June 2014.

In a letter dated January 29 and addressed to the General Secretary of NPAN, the Publishing company owned by former APC Presidential aspirant, Sam Nda-Isaiah, said it decided to return the money following the controversy it has generated.

The company however noted that they did no wrong by collecting the money since the decision to collect the money was reached after former President Goodluck Jonathan reached for an out of court settlement with the affected newspapers.

Leadership will be the second publishing house after The Sun to return the said compensation.

The letter titled "Compensation for illegal seizure of newspapers", was signed by the Group Managing Director of Leadership Newspapers Group Limited, Mike Okpere. The letter reads

“We refer to the above subject matter and enclose herewith a Zenith Bank draft no 08549695 for the sum of N9,000,000.00 (Nine million Naira only) being refund of the compensation paid by the Goodluck Jonathan government for the crude and illegal seizure of our newspapers over a period of 5 days by soldiers from the 6th of June to the 10th of June 2014 through the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN). It will be recalled that this was the sum paid to all newspapers which incurred losses as a result of the act which was arrived at when President Jonathan pleaded for an out of court settlement. It has come to our notice that the chairman of Daily Trust, Malam Kabiru Yusuf who was acting president of NPAN/chairman of the meeting held at Mr. Sam Amuka’s guest house in Lagos in December 2015 where it was agreed, after a detailed analysis of the situation that NPAN and the newspapers committed no offence by the out of court settlement and therefore had no reason to refund the compensation, has gone behind the association’s back and directed the Daily Trust to refund money.‎ After such a dishonourable act by the one person under whose direction members of the association all agreed that there would be no need to refund the money, it is our view that it is no longer tenable not to refund. This is particularly more discomforting when it is recalled that the decision to agree to the out of court settlement and compensation was taken at the Abuja office of Daily Trust with Kabiru Yusuf in attendance. It is for this reason that we are refunding the N9 million. But we will like to maintain the general position that neither the NPAN nor newspaper committed any offence. Our chairman has also made it clear that he does not see any situation where LEADERSHIP will be part of any group that will take the current government to court. Therefore we should be counted out of any future decision to seek redress in court on this same matter. After all it is not the government that asked us to refund, it is the treachery of some of our members. Kindly be advised accordingly.”

Two doctors have died in the process, that is our job. We are trained to do it and we must treat patients no matter how deadly the diseases are because that is our job. Security agencies in the state must rise up and do their job.
