The Valentine Murders – Folarin Michael

Present

Driving home from the Island through the 3rd Mainland Bridge at 8pm is all sorts of frustrating. Traffic crawls and I wonder when I’ll get home. Scratch that. If I want to go home.

Just ahead there’s a group of stranded passengers – another Danfo bus broken down on the bridge. I signal to make a turn towards the Adekunle junction trying my best to ignore the numerous passengers expecting a free ride. I look in my rear-view mirror and this handsome dude is running towards my car. I wonder if he thought my signal light meant I wanted to stop for him. I park to the side of the bridge as he catches up with the car.

I will myself to drive off but I know I can’t. It’s the same thing that happens every year on this day. I give in to it. It’s 8.45pm, Tuesday, February 14 2012. Another Valentine’s Day.

1996

It’s my first day in Aunty Tee Primary School. I’m in Primary 4. Dad has been transferred to Lagos from Abuja. Mum says I’ll love this school. I’m scared.

Tina is the only girl here that has spoken to me. There’s something about her though. All the girls in the class are always following her. She tells them what to do and they are so eager to please her. She looks everyone in the eye and you just do what she says. Even the teachers can’t flog her when she does wrong.

Tina is talking to me, staring at me through those blue irises of hers. “Eat this, you are hungry”, she says. I want to shake my head and say no, but I’m scared. It’s a boiled egg. I take it and eat.

Night falls and Tina comes to my room and we are later joined by other girls. I have been initiated as a young witch. My parents take me to church. The pastors prayed while I knelt down. Mum cried as I was flogged all over my body. They claimed it was deliverance. The sights stopped.

Present

His name is Max. My short skirt has been hiked up my thigh while driving. Max stares. He doesn’t know, but I’m not the one he’s talking to. He’s talking to Tina. He says he lives alone on Jibowu Street. It’s Valentine’s Day, would I like to spend the evening with him? Tina answers in the affirmative. He places his hands on my right thigh. He’s smiling. Tina smiles back. 9.00pm.

2009

“Stop!”

Slap.

“Please, Segun, don’t do this”

More slaps.

Segun is my course mate in the University. He has been like a big brother to me since 2005 when he rescued me from being harassed by a group of 200L students on my first day. We are in our final year. I decided to stay home to read as I’ve always done since I started living off campus two years ago.

I’m about to be violated. By Segun. On Valentine ’s Day. In my room.

“Segun please, I’m a virgin. Please don’t.”

My pleas fall on deaf ears. I shouldn’t have let him in, but I trusted him. Who doesn’t trust their big brother? With a final grunt, he shoves my legs apart and thrusts.

10.45pm. I’ve been staring at the clock on the wall since Segun left at 8.30pm. I’m in pains all over. My tears have stopped but I’m still lying in the same spot where I was defiled hours ago. The room is getting cold. Total silence. Even the crickets have stopped chirping. Tina is standing in front of me. She bends down and lifts me up. I give in to those piercing blue eyes as she leans towards me, her body merging with mine. I blank out.

Present

10.15pm. Max is mixing drinks at the bar. We are in his house. I’m sitting at the edge of the huge bed in his bedroom. I want to leave because I know what will soon happen. But I can’t leave. I’m weak against Tina. She owns me today. Every February 14, she comes forth and makes me do things, evil things. Three years ago I embraced her. Three years ago, it started.

2009

Segun is driving back home from the club where he had gone immediately after defiling me. I’m standing on the road in front of his car. He stops and steps out of the car smiling at me. He’s drunk, else he would have noticed that my eyes are blue in the blare of the car’s headlamps as he walks towards me. I’m no longer in front of him. I’m in the car. He’s on the road. I start the car. He’s too drunk to run. I run him over. 11.53pm. Segun is my first victim.

2010

Service year in Borno State. Mallam Yinusa is the principal of the school I have been assigned to in the past 3 months. Valentine’s Day. He’s lying on the bed while I straddle him. His wife and kids are upstairs sleeping. He doesn’t see the serrated knife I’m about to plunge in his heart. My second victim.

2011

Tochukwu is lying in the bath Unclad. He picked me up at the garage 2 hours ago and brought me to this hotel in the outskirts of town. I’m standing by the bath, holding the hair dryer I just plugged to the mains in the bathroom. The last thing he sees before I drop the dryer in the bath is my blue eyes. Tochukwu is my third. Tina is unstoppable.

Present

My name is Ivy. I’m 26 years, a banker. My parents are long dead, car accident. I’m your regular happy, party-goer, sociable girl. I am myself every day of the year, except February 14 when Tina resurrects and I do her will.

Today, Max is going to be my fourth victim. He doesn’t know it yet as he undresses, but he has less than 2 hours to live.

Politics / Lagos Assembly To Fashola - Beware Of Flattery by mfolarin(m): 9:46am On Nov 18, 2009

Fashola presents N430b budget, House urges gov to be wary of flattery
By Kamal Tayo Oropo

LAGOS State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday presented the 2010 Appropriation Estimates of N429.596 billion to the State House of Assembly.

If approved as presented, the budget would be an increase of 5.3 per cent over the current Appropriation.

The budget presentation ceremony was also an occasion for the state's leadership to presumably critique its performance with the Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, asking Governor Fashola to concentrate on his assignment and not be distracted by sycophants or "noise makers."

He added: "You will be judged by the amount of resources at your disposal and the prevailing conditions and environment under which your government operated and what you make of those resources."

Presenting the budget at the Assembly, Fashola disclosed that the state, through the half-year appraisal, was able to achieve about 70 per cent implementation of the 2009 appropriation.

He said the 2010 budget would ensure the completion of all on-going projects and programmes, while only new initiatives will be undertaken on the basis of a Medium Term Expenditure Framework.

The governor added: "We remain optimistic and confident that despite the current dismal global economic scenario, Lagos is firmly on the path to becoming a major economic success story of our time and the Y2010 budget is a critical bridge to the attainment of this goal."

The budget breakdown is as follows: Total Revenue Projection, N307.027 billion; Capital Expenditure, N250.778 billion; Recurrent Expenditure, N178.818 billion; and Capital Receipts, N28.372 billion.

In his speech at the event, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, commended the executive "for keeping the ball of progress rolling in Lagos."

However, he asked the executive to implement the Assembly's Self Accounting Law "with effect from the New Year in order to ensure that each arm effectively and productively performs its roles without fear or favour."

Ikuforiji said while Lagosians in several constituencies commended the efforts of the state government so far, the House members had observed "some shortcomings and uneven spread in our developmental efforts."

His words: "Over-concentration of efforts at the centre at the expense of the upcountry tends to isolate a big percentage of our constituents to the extent that a simple mind will simply not agree that users of Aboru Road, Ire-Akari/Ilasamaja Road, Lagos-Ikorodu Road, Itoikin/Epe Road, Pen Cinema-Ishaga Road, are bonafide residents of our great state."

But at the end of the budget session, a brawl between former Deputy Speaker of the House, Mrs. Funmilayo Tejuosho (Mushin Constituency I) and another member who is the wife of Juju Maestro, King Sunny Ade, Mrs. Adeniyi Adeyeye (Amuwo Odofin Constituency I), was averted by the prompt intervention of other legislators and guests at the event. The reason for the altercation was unclear.

The Speaker debunked claims that the House was at loggerheads with the executive, charging Fashola to be wary of "latter-day political friends."

He added in a tone suggesting a need for soul-searching by all: "The real measure of your performance will be known after your exit from office. Most of those who claim to love you the most today, we remember, were those who nearly fought your predecessor and his loyalists to a standstill when it became clear that your predecessor gave his full support for you to succeed him. They threatened fire and brimstone if you were made the candidate of our great party, the Action Congress.

"Today, you are the toast and they will even tell the gullible that nothing was good before you got in as the governor. They will tell you nothing good happened to Lagos State before you became governor. They will flatter you to no end. They will like to isolate you from your roots. They will want you to believe that your administration is the first in the world to hit the ground running and achieve like no one else. But like Danny K. Davies (Jnr), a United States Congressman told us at the convention of Eko Club International last month in Chicago and I quote: 'Flattery is like a good perfume, it is to be smelt, not to be swallowed.'"

Nigeria 2009 U-17 World Cup
Jets take over Lagos skies as LOC mobilises for semis

LAGOS State plans to wind up its hosting of matches of the Nigeria 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, where the two semi-finals would be played tomorrow, in grand style.

Switzerland begins the semi-finals against Colombia at 4p.m, while Nigeria tackles Spain by 7p.m. And in its characteristic manner, Lagos State would show off its might by lighting up its skies with special messages to thrill and lure fans to the matches.

As early as 9a.m, the jets would lighten the skies with their aerial manoeuvres and messages. The Lagos Sub-seat revealed yesterday that the aircraft would continue their aerial "bombardment" until the afternoon when the crowd would have packed full for the first match of the day. That is not all. There would also be spectacular fireworks that would start from where the jets stopped.

According to the Chairman, Lagos Sub-seat, who is also the vice president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amanze Uchegbulam, "the might of Lagos Sub-seat will be felt tomorrow because it is our own way of saying a big thank you to all the fans and Lagosians, who have been most wonderful with their support for activities in Lagos State."

He also disclosed that musicians such as Seun Kuti, Adewale Ayuba and Ayan Birin would be on ground to entertain fans within intervals for the carnival-like show that marks the end of activities of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in the state.

The Executive Director of Wisdom Keys, Jaiye Opayemi, added: "We are putting up an innovation that we have tagged 'Soccertainment' for Lagosians.

"It is our own way of thanking everybody and showing indeed that Lagos owns the game. Lagosians have been tremendous in the matches in Lagos. Without being boastful, Lagos has been the centre of excellence for the U-17 World Cup."

Celebrities / D’banj’s Heart Of Gold by mfolarin(m): 2:43pm On Jun 13, 2009
From Sun News Online

D’banj’s heart of gold
By TOSIN AJIRIRE
Saturday, June 13, 2009

The heart of Dapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’banj is certainly not cast in iron. The rave of the moment, who turned 29 on Tuesday, must have had his heart carved in pure gold. The Igwe crooner couldn’t have chosen a more auspicious way to celebrate his birthday when unlike most Nigerians, who throw huge parties for their friends and families, chose to spend the day in the company of the underprivileged, and secondary school students.

Sporting a designer gray suit and oxblood shirt, D’banj spent a good part of his 29th birthday with the abandoned children born with life-threatening and terminal ailments and disabilities like down syndrome, polio, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and hydrocephalus at the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice, an orphanage located in Surulere, Lagos.

Accompanied by his producer and CEO of Mo’hits records, Don Jazzy and other artistes on the label like Ikechukwu, Wande Cole and Naeto C, the music star took time out to cuddle and serenade the children. He later gave them a cheque of N1 million as well as food items.

On his decision to visit the children, D’banj told Blockbuster thus: “It’s a spontaneous decision. I just woke up this morning and decided to celebrate my birthday with the underprivileged children. It’s my own way of giving back to a society that has given me so much. Though, I have done a lot in the past for the underprivileged through my Koko Foundation, this is the first time I would be visiting the hospice.”
Speaking on behalf of Mrs. Laja Adedoyin, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Hearts of Gold Hospice, Irene Ikediashi thanked D’banj for the gesture which she said would go a long way in providing for the upkeep of the children.

D’banj later paid a surprise visit to Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos where he extended his philanthropic gesture to three best graduating students of the school in the 2008-2009 academic sessions. The students, Oritsemisan Ikpobe, Ramon Shitta and Saheedat Onifade had each received a scholarship grant worth $20,000 from the Koko master.

According to D’banj, the gesture was a way of repaying the students who had for long craved for a live musical performance by him. The artiste disclosed that some time in 2007, an On-Air-Personality of a major radio station in Lagos had posed as his manager and duped the students of about N5 million with the promise that he would bring him for a live musical performance in the school.

Blockbuster learnt that each of the students had paid N10,000 for the purported performance by D’banj. But then the agony and disappointment of the students were forgotten as they finally had the chance to see their favourite music star perform live in the school hall on Tuesday. Along with Wande Cole, Ikechukwu and Naeto C, D’banj gave the students the fun of their lifetime as he performed most of his popular songs like Igwe, Tongolo and You Don Make Me Fall in Love, among others.

Thanks.

@ All,

Things r getting smoother & rougher at the same time. Some folks of hers who got my back r convincing her n I think she's responding better. I'll take my time. On the other hand, I'm having probs with the other girl. She's bent on not leaving me. Got to know how to handle this side so I wont end up with nothing at all.
Romance / Re: How To Win Her Back? by mfolarin(m): 2:32pm On Sep 10, 2008
Hi guys & gals,

I was fortunate to come by this article this afternoon. I have a similar prob as the poster. I will explain briefly: I have known F for almost 4yrs now. It's a near perfect relationship, family and all. But we do fight. I admit on her part, she's a lil bit immature. She takes longer to heal. We love each other and our folks approve of our relationship. But when we do fight, she's fond of saying "it's over". I have a phobia for rejection. After this happened like thrice, I took a "wrong advice" and met someone else. She did come back when she knew I had met anoda, but things spiralled since then. So, 2 months ago (just when I had finally convinced the other girl that it was over between us) F cut it off. She said I was untrustworthy. I was annoyed too, so I made second mistake, I recalled the other person out of spite. 2 months along, I have lived a rather normal but dull life. I don't hav probs with the other girl, but I'm just not happy. Lately, a group of our friends brought up the issue of our coming back. My normal life got disrupted. I couldn't sleep. I think of her last b4 drifting to sleep, then I wake up thinking her name. It got to a stage I couldnt wait for my friends to finish whatever they were doing to bring us back, it was taking too long! Last night, I sent a 3-page text, called her thrice. She didnt pick my calls. I sent anoda text to persuade her to pick my calls. Then I called again, and she told me under 4mins that is was totally over and she didnt want any of my troubles again. Of course, I had a terrible night.

On reading this article, I decided to pen her a letter as someone suggested. My friends are still trying to talk her into seeing me so we can sort things out. Kind of like therapy to unburden ourselves of our hurts. I hope this works out. Already, I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to win her trust back, which of course includes breaking my unstable relationship with the other girl.

I hope to read suggestions and admonitions from everyone who feels obliged. And topup, ur words have been very encouraging and enlightening. I'm sorry every1 about the long story. But I feel better after pouring it all out.
