Nigeria Football Federation supremo Amaju Pinnick has revealed two Frenchmen Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger and ex-Liverpool boss Gérard Houllier were contacted before the appointment of Gernot Rohr as the coach of Nigeria in August 2016. Nigeria were forced to go in search of an expatriate manager after the draw for the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers pitted the national team in the same group as Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia. ''When we saw the draw for the World Cup, we knew we were condemned [by a tough group] and we determined that we must overcome it," Pinnick said at a Nigerian Federation event attended by KweséESPN's Colin Udoh. "The first thing we identified was that we needed a new coach so we reached out to Arsene Wenger, to Gerard Houllier, and one name kept coming to the fore: Rohr. "Now we have no regrets about hiring him and he has proven himself not just by qualifying for the World Cup, but with the foundation he is laying for our team, which now has young players from the age of 19, [he is] doing well.'' German-born Gernot Rohr, who is also in the possession of a French passport, has signed a two-year contract extension and his wages have been paid until December 2017.

French Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco have announced the appointment of former Nigeria international Michael Emenalo as the new Sporting Director with immediate effect. The 52-year-old held a similar post at Premier League champions Chelsea until he resigned exactly three weeks ago. Monaco had been in search of a new Sporting Director following the departure of Spaniard Antonio Cordon this summer. ''It’s a wonderful opportunity for me in such a high quality project. ''Vadim Vasilyev convinced me to join AS Monaco and I believe this is the right choice for me after my decision to leave Chelsea. ''I will work here with humility and try my best to bring my experience in this club which is a reference of French and European football.'' Anderlecht manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck is unhappy with the contribution of Nigeria international Henry Onyekuru in the last two games in the Belgian First Division A, saying his dribbles were negative over the course of ninety minutes. The Everton loanee is Anderlecht's top scorer in the league with seven goals from fifteen appearances. ''Henry has to stop thinking that he’s only about his goals... The sum of his dribbles must be positive after 90 minutes. Not negative, as now,'' Vanhaezebrouck stated, according to nieuwsblad.be. ''Especially if he has so much space and as little opposition as against Kortrijk, he should avoid simple ball losses. ''Yes, last week against Mouscron he scored the winning goal, but I expect more from him.'' Onyekuru has notched eight goals in all competitions for the Belgian champions, but only three were scored in front of the club's fans at the Stade Constant Vanden Stock in Brussels. Anderlecht will host Uche Agbo's Standard Liege in the Cup on Wednesday.

Akpoguma has recently broken into the first team of Hoffenheim, starting and going the distance in their last four matches in the league, including today's contest versus Hamburg.
