Politics › Sultan And I Are Miyetti Allah’s Patrons, Says Sanusi by Midgut(op): 8:45am On Jan 14, 2018 |
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, says he personally gave the Federal Government pictures of 800 Fulani herdsmen and their families that were killed in Taraba State last year but the government had yet to take action.
He added that the killings in the Middle Belt were being perpetrated by both the herdsmen and the locals, stressing that the murder of the herdsmen was not being accurately reported thereby presenting a false narrative of ‘one-sided killings’.
Sanusi said this during an interview with Sunday PUNCH on Saturday.
The emir said, “Some months ago in Mambilla, in one weekend, over 800 Fulani were murdered by Mambilla militias. The papers did not even go there to cover the story. Most of those wiped out were women, infants and the elderly.
“In one case, a pregnant woman was killed, her stomach was ripped open and the baby was brought out and slaughtered. I personally handed over to the Federal Government a dossier with the names and pictures of the 800 or so people slaughtered as well as the names and addresses of persons known to have participated in these acts of ethnic cleansing.
“Nothing has happened. I also ensured that authorities received video and audio evidence of senior politicians in Taraba State, who were involved in this act of genocide. No one has been arrested. Fulanis were also murdered in Kajuru and Numan.
“In many of these cases it was not about conflict but militias raiding settlements to kill women and children, and then later, attacking herdsmen and slaughtering them and their cattle.”
The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria condoled with the people of Benue State over the recent killing of over 70 persons but rubbished reports that the attacks were part of a ploy by the Fulani to take over parts of Nigeria.
He attributed the killings and reprisals to the failure of government and security agencies.
“The point I am making is that we are living in a country that has failed to protect the lives of people on all sides and bring culprits to book. Also in the case of the Fulani, there is a deliberate attempt to ‘ethnicise’ criminality, and politicians, who are total failures, have found the anti-Fulani rhetoric to be the way to get popularity,” he said.
The monarch said as far as perpetrators continued to get away with the dastardly acts, they would remain emboldened to continue to kill.
Sanusi alleged that in Taraba State for instance, one of the officials that took part in the killing of Fulani had been given an appointment by the state government.
He added, “The Sultan of Sokoto, the Lamido of Adamawa and I have been quietly speaking to top security personnel for months; telling them that the failure to provide justice and the clear involvement of political leaders in genocide, especially in Taraba, is causing anxiety.
“The case of Taraba is particularly bad. In the days of (President Olusegun) Obasanjo, an act of cleansing, similar to the recent one, happened. A politician, who was identified by an investigative panel as a key man behind the genocide, was simply appointed state attorney general by Governor Danbaba Suntai and he made sure no one was called to account.
“In the recent genocide, a top local government official, on whom there was evidence of involvement was removed, then given a political appointment in Jalingo in the Governor’s Office.”
Asked whether the anti-grazing law in Benue State is the right approach, the monarch said he shared the view of Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State that the law was divisive and unfair to the Fulani herdsmen.
Sanusi said the law deepened the indigene/settler dichotomy and made the herdsmen feel isolated.
The monarch added that he had appealed to the Taraba State governor to delay the implementation of the law in the state but all his pleas had fallen on deaf ears.
The emir stated, “I fully support all efforts to attract investment into cattle rearing. This is global best practice. Capital is put into development of ranches and grazing areas, herdsmen settle. Their cattle are healthier and fatter, they sell milk and milk products and beef, their children go to school and they are economically much better off.
“This is what we all want. But in Benue and Taraba, the approach has not been one of including and supporting and regulating herdsmen but of isolation and hate. I am happy Governor Lalong of Plateau has publicly stated that he advised Governor Ortom of Benue to tread carefully.
“I can confirm that I personally spoke to Governor Darius Ishaku before his public hearings on his law and begged him to slow down until he has worked out proper implementation but he refused.”
The former CBN governor admitted that he was one of the patrons of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria.
He said the Sultan of Sokoto, the Emir of Katsina, the Emir of Zazzau and the Lamido of Adamawa were also patrons of MACBAN.
Sanusi, therefore, stated that the group was not a violent one.
He said, “As I understand it when Miyetti Allah was first set up, they requested a few Fulani emirs to be their patrons in their capacity as emirs. The first grand patron was Sultan Abubakar III and he was replaced by successive sultans – Dasuki, Maccido and Saad Abubakar now.
“Other patrons were emir of Kano, Lamido of Adamawa and emirs of Zazzau and Katsina, I believe. So, my predecessor was a patron and on my ascension to the throne, I became a patron. This is all nominal.
“To the best of my knowledge, Miyetti Allah has never been involved in acts of violence and has always condemned violence and called on its members to eschew violence.
“It is, however, committed to protecting the fundamental rights of herdsmen as Nigerians including constitutional right to freedom of movement and the ownership of private wealth and peaceful conduct of their business.”
The emir added that the effects of desertification had led to an increase in competition for resources.
The monarch, therefore, described allegations that Fulani wanted to take over Nigeria as a ‘daft argument’.
Sanusi stated, “Grazing routes have been taken way by politicians. We have demographic implosion in the North, desertification, reduction in water reserves and competition for resources among various aspects of agriculture – crop production, animal husbandry and fishing.
“What we see is the failure of political authority, the cynical manipulation of ethnic identity by failed governments and the impotence of our security machinery. Instead of being dragged into a debate on whether Fulani are trying to take over peoples land – which is a daft argument – let us try and bring some intelligence into this discussion on weak governance rather than emotions.” http://punchng.com/sultan-and-i-are-miyetti-allahs-patrons-says-sanusi/

Cognito79: Your assertion is wrong. Geology students do well in other departments including MTH and CHM.
I don't agree that the department is the most difficult, it only has some sadistic and crazy lecturers.
I finished from Geology, I had A in both CHM 101 and 102, B in Phy 101, 102, A 105 (practical), A in CHM 201, 203 and C in 205 (Amire's course), it was a mass failure. I replicated that results for other external courses, yet I finished with a second class loweexcr (3.40). That is to give you an idea of what we contended with in the department. And I was not in the best 10 students of the department.
Who told you Medical students will excel if taken to Geology? Medicine is only an ability to remember volumes of book, nothing more.
How many of the medical students had A in CHM, Phy, zoo, Bot? That is to render invalid your position. Did you just say how many medical students have A in chm, phy and zoo? You have to get yourself informed! Did you know or you are just trying to deny the fact that more than 70% of medical students always have first class in part one? Can you say the same with geology? You can't compare their standard with medical students! |

People think that this is true not knowing that it is due to the quality of students admitted to the department. Go and check their mth101, phy101,105, chm101,102 results and compare it to a department like mbbs, pharmacy, electrical & electronic engineering you would see how poor they are before they start their departmental courses. Take medical students to that geology, they would produce at least 30 first class graduate in a year! |

Education › OAU Suspends Student Union Activities Over Alleged Cultism, Stabbing by Midgut(op): 6:55pm On Nov 06, 2017 |
The authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University , Ile - Ife , in Osun State have suspended the activities of students ’ union over frequent crisis , which include alleged cult attacks and stabbing among the students . The University Public Relations Officer of the OAU , Biodun Olarewaju , made this known in a release on Monday . He explained that the decision was taken after an emergency meeting held on Monday by the management of the university. In the release , he described the cause of the proscription as “ the unacceptable misdemeanors manifested by the students in the short period of its existence after recent reinstatement. ” He added , “ In order to forestall total breakdown of law and order and curtail acts of brigandage among the student populace, the authorities of the OAU have suspended all activities of the university’ s SU until further notice . “ Incessant fighting and unruly behaviour during their congresses and the recalcitrant attitudes of their leadership have made it inevitable for the university management to suspend their activities. “ Apart from the fighting between the vice- president and the Director of Socials in which headbutts and stabbing with broken bottles were freely used , the supporters of the president beat up the speaker on June 29 and 30 , while the speaker ’ s supporters , in retaliation , beat up the president on September 15 . “ The management also condemns, in strong terms , the forceful release of students under investigation from Police custody on October 6 , and the unwarranted vandalising of people’ s vehicles , particularly those of the Ekiti State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers . “ We also frown at unfounded rumour of tuition increase and fabricated threat of invasion by cultists in order to deceive and falsely gain acceptance among the student populace to precipitate crisis capable of disrupting the academic activities of the university and recent serious fighting, open fracas , at the meeting of the Union where the president of the SU was brutally assaulted and which , if not properly and promptly addressed , could lead to fatal consequences . ” He further warned that no student should parade him - or herself as a leader or representative of students in order to cause disruption to university activities, under whatever guise . Crime › $3.7m Fraud: Nigerian Student Jailed For Four Years In US: picture by Midgut(op): 10:35am On Oct 20, 2017 |
A Nigerian student living in the United States, Amechi Amuegbunam, has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for perpetrating fraud to the tune of $3.7m.
Amuegbunam, 30, was also ordered to pay $615, 555.12 in restitution for his role in a sophisticated email phishing scam otherwise known as Business Email Compromise that caused $3.7m loss to US companies.
The convict and other individuals were said to have between November 2013 and August 2015 sent fraudulent emails to companies in the Northern District of Texas and elsewhere containing misrepresentations that caused the companies to wire transfer funds as instructed on a PDF document that was attached to the email.
He was arrested in Baltimore in August 2015 and charged with scamming 17 North Texas companies out of more than $600,000 using the technique.
Amuegbunam was accused of sending emails that looked like forwarded messages from top company executives to employees who had the authority to wire money.
Amuegbunam tricked the employees into wiring him money by transposing a couple of letters in the actual company email, authorities said.
The Dallas investigation began in 2013 when two North Texas companies reported falling victim to the scheme, each losing about $100,000, according to the complaint.
In the case of Luminant Corp., an electric utility company in Dallas, an employee with the authority to wire money received an email from someone who appeared to be a company executive, the complaint said.
But the email domain name had two letters transposed. For example, someone created the email with a domain name of lumniant.com <http://lumniant.com>.
The duped employee wired $98,550 to a bank account outside Texas.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation subpoenaed information about the email account and learned it was created by someone named Colvis Amue, the complaint said.
In another case involving Amuegbunam, a company accountant received an email from her chief executive, who was on vacation outside the country. He asked her to transfer money for a “time-sensitive acquisition” before the day’s end, according to the FBI.
The executive said a lawyer would contact her with more information.
The accountant said such requests were not unusual.
The lawyer sent her an email with her CEO’s signature on a letter of authorisation with the company’s seal that was attached. The email gave her instructions to wire more than $737,000 to a bank in China.
The accountant learned about the scam when the CEO called the next day, saying he knew nothing about the wire transfer request.
The FBI subsequently issued an alert about the new cyber attack it called the “Business Email Compromise.” The FBI said it was a “growing fraud that is more sophisticated than any similar scam the FBI has seen before.”
FBI investigations in conjunction with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Nigeria, led to the arrest of the convict.
Following the conviction of the Nigerian, the FBI commended the EFCC, for its dedication and support in bringing Amuegbunam to justice, the EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement. Source: http://punchng.com/3-7m-fraud-nigerian-student-jailed-for-four-years-in-us/
