Crime › I Benefited N65,000 From My Uncle’s Kidnap; Send Me To Prison – Suspect Begs by midolian(op): 2:21pm On Apr 13, 2016 |
A kidnap suspect, who gave his name as Collins Chime, from Obinagu Udi in Enugu State yesterday told journalists how he received N65,000 as his own share from a N500,000 ransom paid by his uncle. Collins, who was paraded alongside his collaborators confessed that “we were to kidnap a rich woman but we missed her; so, I suggested that we kidnap my uncle since we missed our initial target.”
“After we kidnapped him, we received N500,000 as ransom, out of which our leader (still at large) gave me N65,000.”
While pleading for mercy he said “I have never involved myself in this kind of thing; please beg them not to kill me; let them keep me in prison; I’ll stay there and work for government.”
Other members of the smashed kidnap syndicate include Nonso Onyebuchi of Obeagu Awgu, who is the leader of the gang, and Chukwudi Azemene of Umuoduma Aba, Abia state.
They had kidnapped one Elder Chime Edwin, a UK returnee of Obinagu Udi on 2nd April, 2016 at his house, along the same address, and whisked him off in a Volkswagen Audi car with Registration No. DWK 929 PP, which they had earlier robbed from the owner at Umunede, Delta State.
Parading the suspects alongside others before newsmen, the Enugu State commissioner of police, Nwodibo Ekechukwu, said the first syndicate, Etim Amos, of Abiakpo Ibo road, Ikot-Ekpene, masterminded the kidnapping of Barr. John Abugu, at G.R.A Enugu.
According to CP Ekechukwu, the syndicate was also behind the abduction of Mrs. Jane Ekweremadu at Agric Bank junction, Independence Layout, Enugu, as well as Mr. Brooks Okwara at the same area and Mrs. Sandra Onu, along with her Honda CRV car, Registration No. Lagos JJJ 447 CL at New Haven area of the state.
He disclosed that the command, in a carefully-planned operation ambushed the gang at a point along Itu-Calabar road, during which other members of the syndicate tried to escape.
The commissioner stated that the gang leader, Etim Amos, who had been posing as a soldier with an Army cap, which he usually placed on the dashboard to deceive people, was gunned down alongside another gang member, one Otunre Nse.
He further explained that the Honda CRV belonging to Mrs. Sandra Onu, in which she was abducted was recovered from them.
Also recovered are a gun, the handsets of the victims, fake Army ID card, bearing Corporal Etim Henry Amos. http://dailypost.ng/2016/04/13/i-benefited-n65000-from-my-uncles-kidnap-send-me-to-prison-suspect-begs/?utm_source=dp_twt&utm_medium=twitterhttps://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/kids1.jpg |

Christianity Etc › Most Nigerian Pastors Are Fake, Not Called By God – Oritsejafor by midolian(op): 10:05am On Apr 10, 2016 |
A former National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, says most people who claim to be pastors or men of God are not, as they were not called by God in the first place.
Oritsejafor expressed displeasure over how ‘these men of God’ have now turned the church into a business centre and living flamboyant lives, stating that the development was the reason kidnappers now see the church as a place to make money.
In a recent chat with the Punch, the outgoing President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, said, “The problem we have in the church is that a lot of these pastors are not men of God as they were not called.
“They are mercenaries, commercially minded people. The duty of the church is to preach morality not materialism and because Nigerians are very gullible; they are easy victims of deceit. They fall prey to some of these pastors or prophets of doom. The way they live gives a wrong impression of what should be in a church of God. There should be no room for material possessions.
“I am not saying a man of God should not live a life of comfort but it should be a life of good comfort; that is why kidnapping is now a common thing even in the church.
“It is unfortunate that we are having this kind of problem because most places of religious gathering, particularly of the Christian faith, are seemingly reducing their faith to commercials. So many people think they have money and most of them live a flamboyant lifestyle.
“As such, the kidnappers mistake them for money men but there is nothing there. The kidnappers would be kept at bay if they stopped preaching prosperity and allowing dirty money to go into the church coffers. I also think the church is losing its moral values. The values are disappearing gradually.
“We should preach values and not materialism. I think the churches themselves should look inwards and correct the poor impression they are giving people outside that there is money in the church, whereas there is none,” he stated.
On his opinion on the Kaduna State bill against public preaching, Oritsejafor said Governor Nasir el-Rufai had seemingly taken the wrong step.
Oristejafor said, “He should call a meeting of all the stakeholders in that state with respect to religious activities before rushing to the state Assembly for any bill. Be that as it may, we have to be very careful if there is any bill intended to wear religious colouration.
“When Sharia was introduced into this country we were lucky to have a Christian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who tamed it. Nigeria would have been engulfed by the conflagration. Sharia would have been misunderstood.
“There are already enough laws in the statue book that take care of what Governor El-Rufai has in mind. I have no objection if he wants to curb noise pollution in the name of religion. I quite agree if this is the basis. But in a situation where it is meant to tackle extremism, libel, sedition, incitement and more, there are enough laws in our statute book for this. Doing otherwise is not good for him.
“I have tremendous respect for him for he was the person bold enough to say that there should be no more street begging. Yes, that was a sensible thing because even in the Islamic countries such is not allowed,” the pastor stated. http://dailypost.ng/2016/04/10/most-nigerian-pastors-are-fake-not-called-by-god-oritsejafor/https://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Pastor-Ayo-Oritsejafor1.jpg?712c0b |

Nigerians are stunned to the bones about the near three-years of political genocide in River state. Port Harcourt, the once boisterous Garden City and commercial hub of the Niger Delta has been magically transformed into a nightmarish killing field overnight.
What has puzzled and continued to confound even the most critical analytical minds is failure of all stakeholders on the saddle to abate the state of anarchy in Rivers, now comically, but seriously, referred to as “Rivers of blood.” Security agencies, state and federal governments, INEC, politicians, academics, businessmen, traditional rulers, communities, NGOs and a lot more have been held spell bound by Rivers anarchic configuration currently.
What have replaced the solemnity of life and essence of existence in the once enviable state, reputed as the second wealthiest state in Nigeria after Lagos are killings, cultic gangsterism, arson, abductions and worse still, a devilry struggle for the control of the political soul of the oil-rich state.
Fear has replaced courage; courageousness leads to death; prayers in shrines have replaced the cherished prayers in churches on bended kneels, its like an enclave of Lucifer; brothers and sisters plot and mindlessly kill themselves in the most brazen manner. Nothing can be so debasing and awesome than the portrait of Rivers at the moment.
Much as a reasonable proportion of humanity knows what has besieged the fate of Rivers, a lot more Nigerians can only boast of scanty details of the scandalous fireworks in the state. But the truth remains that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s disapproval of the election of the immediate past governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi (then of the PDP) as chairman of the Nigeria’s Governors Forum (NGF) in preference for former Plateau state governor, Jonah Jang laid the template for this blossoming violence and massacre of fraternal brothers.
Amaechi’s insistence that he democratically won the election and would not opt for the “arrangee” posture of the Jonathan- led PDP pitted him against his party and former President Jonathan. The events that followed were not just scary, but worrisome. But factually, the satanic desire of Jonathan to unseat Amaechi saw a willing ally in Barrister Nyesom Wike, then Minister of state for Education and now Rivers state governor. While it is not necessary to recount in full blast, events of that period, its important to emphasize that an ambitious Wike, eying the governorship seat of the state in 2015 perceived the presidential back-up a strong weapon to uproot Amaechi, his former boss. The stage for political violence was decorated and baptized under this atmosphere.
Not given to pretenses, Wike with presidential security backing launched his electoral onslaught on Rivers state, first as a PDP guber aspirant. He had 15 other rivals contending for the party’s governorship ticket. The first sign of Wike meanness was that he practically chased all other rival contestants for the party’s ticket at the venue of the party primary in Port Harcourt.
May be, he dreaded fair competition. So, he concretized his action by cornering and compelling officials drafted for the exercise to obey a drummed presidential order by declaring him winner of a party primary election that obviously never held.
They obliged nervously. And when Wike’s opponent wailed too loud, a reconciliation meeting was convened in Abuja at Legacy House, President Jonathan’s campaign headquarters. Again, Wike invaded the venue and chased away his rivals who sought for amicable solution to the crisis and indeed, everybody at sight, who dared him. Yet, nothing happened. He flew the party’s governorship flag triumphantly.
Meanwhile, Amaechi, now Nigeria’s minister of Transport, who vowed that Wike cannot succeed him, floated a House of Reps member, Dr. Dakuku Peterside on the platform of the APC to face Wike. They understand his Gestapo style of politics.
All these events were heralded by scary acts of violence and killings sequel to the 2015 general elections, to the extent that voters were intimidated in their homes, offices, streets or roads and in public places. It laid a solid template for the face of the election. And Niger Delta famed for militancy and cultic gangs, youths found ready jobs to execute against enemies of the payer.
Consequently, governorship election in Rivers state was in every sense of the word, a theatre of war, to the extent the then out-going governor Amaechi could not even vote in his own polling unit. Election casualties evident in the number of persons killed, wounded or kidnapped alarmed every Nigerian and election observers of any hue.
Yet, Wike triumphed again. INEC declared him winner and when he finally secured his victory at the Supreme Court, which voided the decisions of the two lower court which nullified Wike’s election, the only language known to Wike and his cohorts was the Machiavellian, justice of the end justifying the means.
No doubt, hence bloodletting and barefaced intimidation of the electorate is another pattern of legalized democracy in Nigeria, exemplified in Rivers state, it railroaded itself into the March legislative elections in the state more noxiously. It recorded an unprecedented level of violence, with Wike as the Chief Security Officer of the state.
Days to the legislative re-run elections, Wike strongly admonished PDP supporters to resist any attempt by security agents to arrest them. As if this was not unlawful enough, governor Wike again shamelessly assailed Nigerians verbally that those drafted to perform the Rivers legislative re-run election should “ write their will,” a despicable statement he later recanted belatedly by explaining that he referred to those with the evil intention of manipulating the elections. No level of executive recklessness can be so provoking. He ironically got emboldened and furiously defended PDP supporters and the party, in a manner that never really exonerated them. But Nigerians watched and clapped.
But the question remains this: Wike is not just the Chief Security Officer of the state, but also a lawyer by training. It implies that he knows the letter of the law beyond the comprehension of a street urchin.
Assuming APC supporters were presumed to be on the offensive in thwarting the electoral process, summary execution of them is lawful, as Wike seems to prescribe or canvass? The result of his pronouncement is the wantom killings and all manner of infamy the re-run election despoiled Nigeria’s democracy and Rivers serenity. No end in sight yet for the Rivers drama.
Now true to the Nigerian character, the brigands have taken over streets, roads, public places and even private homes of indigenes of the state, with withheld results of the re-run. The people are now so scared to the extent, to say normal business in all spheres of existence in that state is brazenly abused is grossly under expressing the Rivers narrative.
Those pulling the strings may not necessarily be just the two- the PDP and the APC, symbolized by the eggheads, Wike and Amaechi or even Dakuku. But Wike boasts with full breath that Rivers is PDP and nobody can wrestle Rivers away from PDP, but forgets easily that the onus lies on him to protect lives and property of inhabitants of the state regardless of party affiliations.
Today, Nigerians mourn the death of other Nigerians in Rivers state, the most pathetic being that of an NYSC member and INEC ad-hoc staff, Okonta Samuel, shot to death in cold blood because Wike has failed to protect him, based on his deadly conviction that Rivers is a PDP property. Nigerians are asking this crucial question, where would Rivers be or what would be the face of Rivers after Governor Wike. No one should forget that there is a pending council elections in the same state some few months ahead and another governorship election in the next three years. So, would there be a soul to cast a vote anymore, with Wike on the saddle? http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2016/04/09/where-will-rivers-be-after-wike-by-abdul-suleiman/Credit : Abdul Suleiman |

The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) an anti-corruption group, has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government for its silence on the leaked Panama Papers.
The controversial papers had exposed some top world corrupt public office holders, including prominent Nigerians.
CACOL in a statement issued on Friday, by its executive chairman, Debo Adeniran, said the government’s “indifference” to the scandal was “worrisome and repugnant.”
The group demanded that the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, should resign from office and surrender himself to federal authorities for prosecution.
“The Nigerian government’s attitude to the gruesome revelations from the Panama Papers leaks becomes worrisome and repugnant, as the attitude is apparently lackadaisical and indifferent,” Adeniran said.
“When in other places, heads of the ‘mighty’ have ‘rolled’ over the Panama papers leaks, (notably in Iceland where the Prime Minister was forced to resign from office following protests by Icelanders) the Nigerian government’s reaction or better put inaction and insensitivity over the Panama papers is unacceptable and reprehensible,” the group said.
The group warned that any failure by Buhari’s government to immediately act on the situation will not augur well for the much-touted anti-corruption mantra of his administration.
“With such a lackadaisical or indifferent attitude on the part of government toward global issues like the Panama Papers leak especially when so-called leaders from Nigeria are mentioned in the scam, the celebrated anti-corruption drive of the government and the anti-corruption poise of the present regime may as well just be described as a ruse,” he said.
“Consequently, the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL is demanding that a special attention should be paid by the Federal government and the anti-corruption agencies to the revelations from the leaks with a goal of acting on them and with the view of verifying the facts; carrying out investigations, probing, prosecuting and recovering all the loots stolen from our Commonwealth that are hidden in the tax havens and offshore companies.
“Dr. Bukola Saraki, the sitting Senate President and Chairman of the National Assembly with all his baggage of corruption charges is, once again, topping the charts in the Panama Papers.
“This is totally disgraceful and very tarnishing for the image of the country and calls for drastic action of government and good people of Nigeria. Saraki, who is currently facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on a thirteen-count charge, on the bases of corruption and false assets declaration is reported to have continued receiving salaries even after leaving office as Governor in Kwara state and used state funds to pay for private properties.
“With the addition of the Panama Papers indictment to his ‘multi-coloured coat’ of corruption, it is time for Nigerians to call for Saraki to step down as Senate President and as Chairman of the National Assembly pending when he has successfully cleared his name and clean the ‘smears’ all over him.
“If he fails to resign, Nigerians must rally and mandate their representatives in their various constituencies to commence his impeachment process of based on moral and ethical grounds”, he added. http://dailypost.ng/2016/04/09/panama-papers-buharis-silence-worrisome-cacol/

Politics › Rivers Assembly Approves Wike’s Request For Another N10b Loan by midolian(op): 6:08am On Apr 09, 2016 |
The Rivers State House of Assembly, yesterday, gave the state governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, the nod to obtain a N10billion loan from the Excess Crude Account (ECA).
The approval, which was given through a vote by the lawmakers, was in response to a letter Wike sent to the assembly through the Speaker, requesting for the loan.
In the letter, dated April 5, 2016, the governor stated that when the loan is obtained, it would be used to fund some development projects in the state.
The letter stated: “You are aware of the huge infrastructure development challenge and our efforts to address the situation. Since we came on board, we have not only remobilized all contractors handling major road sites, but have also awarded new contracts for the construction and reconstruction of new roads and other projects.” Continuing, the governor said: “We have also advertised for tenders for the Bori-Saakpenwa road, the Obiri Ikwerre-Airport bypass, while the contracts for the comprehensive rehabilitation of eleven secondary schools and some of the dilapidated general hospitals are also due for award.
“However, our major constraint is inadequate resources, which is worsened by shrinking returns from the Federation Account.
“On the strength of the above, it is my desire to obtain a Ten Billion (N10, 000, 000,000.00) loan facility from the Excess Crude Account to continue funding our numerous development projects.
“The loan, which attracts a single interest of nine percent and 20 years repayment period, is quite favourable to the reality of the state’s economy.” Making their contributions, the lawmakers gave tacit support to the loan, saying it would facilitate the governor’s loan drive to develop the state. Hon Deeya Barine, who represents Khana I Constituency, argued that, “I’m gladdened that the Bori-Saakpenwa road is one of the projects that this loan is meant for and I know it would open the gateway to Ogoniland.
“I also support the loan because all the projects highlighted there; rehabilitation of schools and rehabilitation of general hospitals are worth the value for the loan.”
Hon Opurum Iruanya, who represents Etche I Constituency in the House, submitted that the road projects embarked by the governor has yielded positive results, calling on the House to give approval to the loan.
Before hitting the gavel to give final approval to the loan, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dabotoru Dima, said the loan is worth it, considering the percentage interest rate and the projects for which it will be used for. The eight lawmakers, who were present at the sitting, including the Speaker, later adjourned sine die.
It will be recalled that this is not the first time the governor would be getting the assembly’s approval to obtain loan.
Last year, shortly after being sworn into office, the House also gave him approval to obtain N10 billion and another N20 billion from Access Bank and Zenith Banks respectively. http://thenationonlineng.net/rivers-assembly-approves-wikes-request-another-n10b-loan/Lalasticlala |

Senator Ordia said, “PDP will produce the next Senate President if Senate President Bukola Saraki is removed. We are behind him; what is going on at CCT is political persecution and this is not allowed in any democracy. We will win, we have the number to produce the next Senate President.
“PDP Senators are waiting with keen interest, we are solidly behind him, In a democracy, the Executive does not choose who should be the Senate President, this is what the 8th Senate has done by getting its own presiding officer. Politics › PanamaPapers Exposes Enrico Monfrini, Nigerian Public Officers May Be Prosecuted by midolian(op): 6:09am On Apr 07, 2016 |
* Lawyer hired by Nigeria to track Abacha’s loot has 178 firms in tax havens
Zacheaus Somorin with agency reports Nigerian public officers named in the #PanamaPapers leak could face prosecution if the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice decides to press a case.
This came as news emerged yesterday that a Swiss attorney, Enrico Monfrini, hired by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to track missing Abacha loot in Swiss banks is himself operating over 178 companies in offshore tax havens, a massive leak of secret documents belonging to offshore shell companies has revealed.
The leak of more than 11 million secret documents from the Panama-based law firm, Mossack Fonseca, according to an online news portal, TheCable, is causing ripples globally.
Ethical and criminal questions are being asked about the stashing away of billions of dollars in tax havens.
Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, Iceland Prime Minister, has resigned over the leaks which exposed his offshore assets.
Nigerians named so far — with more to come — are Senate President Bukola Saraki, his predecessor David Mark (pictured), former minister of defence Theophilus Danjuma, and former governor of Delta state James Ibori.
Femi Falana said there is no protection for any Nigerian public officer, serving or retired, when it comes to offshore investments. “It is not a crime to move your wealth to tax havens, we must be clear on that,” he said.
“However, Nigerian public officers named in the leaked papers will have a lot of explaining to do.
“One, they have to justify the assets traced to them in these offshore investments. Did they earn the money legitimately? Two, did they declare those assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau when in public office as required by the law? The Code of Conduct Act came into operation in the 1980s, so it is not a recent law.”
Falana said under the law, there is neither statute of limitation nor exemption for any public officer.
“The issue of trusteeship or blind trust does not arise because it is not known to the code of conduct law. The law also makes it clear that you cannot operate a foreign account,” he said. Presidency sources said the attorney-general would consider the next line of action as more facts emerge.
“For now, no government official is going to comment because it is too early in the day,” the official said, but said prosecution is a “possibility”. Those named so far held public offices at different times.
Saraki, who is currently facing trial over charges of false asset declaration, was governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2011.
Ibori was Governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007, while Danjuma was Chief of Army Staff from 1976 to 1979 as well as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2003.
Mark was military Governor of Niger State (1985-1988), Minister of Communications and Senate President (2007-2015).
Meanwhile, news has emerged that a Swiss attorney, Enrico Monfrini, hired by Nigeria to track missing Abacha loot in Swiss banks is himself operating over 178 companies in offshore tax havens, a massive leak of secret documents belonging to offshore shell companies has revealed. Monfrini was hired in 2000 by the then new civilian government of the country to help establish the existence of and repatriate over $4 billion allegedly looted by former military dictator, Sani Abacha. The documents showed that Monfrini, an influential legal practitioner in Switzerland, is the director of 178 companies scattered around Panama and the British Virgin Island.
Although the documents did not directly implicate Monfrini as having committed any crime, still, the revelation points to the hypocrisy of a man widely revered for his remarkable ability to dismantle tax evaders and looters across jurisdictions. Monfrini is a founding partner of Monfrini Crettol & Associates, one of the most recognised legal services providers in Switzerland.
According to an online newspaper, Premium Times, in 2000, Obasanjo hired Monfrini’s firm to help recover Abacha loot, which was estimated to be more than $4 billion at the time.
According to Obasanjo, Monfrini helped the Nigerian government secure the release of N267 billion–$1.34 billion.
As at December 2010, Mr. Monfrini was the director of the following offshore companies in tax havens: Director of 17 PMA (Panama) company in ACT status.
Director of 3 BVI company (British Virgin Island) in ACT status. Director of 1 PMA company in CAR status (to others) Director of 38 PMA company in DIS status. Director of 1 BVI in DIS status. Director of 44 PMA company in INA status. Director of 65 PMA company in MOR status. Director of 6 BVI company in MOR status. Director of 3 PMA company in REN status.
Monfrini could not be reached to comment for this story. His secretary, who gave her name simply as Beatrice, said during a telephone conversation that her principal was “on a trip outside of Switzerland.” Monfrini didn’t reply e-mail seeking comment. http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/04/07/panamapapers-exposed-nigerian-public-officers-may-be-prosecuted/Meanwhile see Nigerians exposed so far: Panama Papers Vs Saraki : Read https://www.nairaland.com/3028446/panamapapers-hidden-family-assets-sarakiDanjuma : https://www.nairaland.com/3032170/panama-papers-exposes-theophilus-danjumasDavid mark: https://www.nairaland.com/3031661/david-mark-named-panama-papers |
