A Coalition of Civil Society Group, at the weekend disclosed that it has formally written to the United States of Ameri ca’s President, Barrack Obama, on the planned extradition of businessman and sena­tor-elect, Prince Buruji Kashamu.

The group, which condemned the plot, described it as an act of abduction, torture and impunity not tenable in Unit ed States and international laws.

The group’s President, Etuk Bassey Williams, in a chat with newsmen in Abuja on Sunday said, “It is imperative that the war against terror or any other illegality is conducted within the rule of law otherwise those fighting such crimes will lose their moral authority to do so”.

He said rendition, which was the legal process of sending a suspected criminal to another country to be in terrogated or detained, usu ally for law-enforcement pur poses, was condemned by the United States president during his 2008 presidential campaign.

“The high rate of erroneous renditions clearly defines its failure thereby making the need for an alternative to be inevitable. It is in lieu of this that we propose that the technique of empathy and non-torture as used by former FBI counter terror agent, Ali Soufan, which has been very effective to be adopted in addition to developing other tactical and operational tra decraft,” the group noted

It recalled that “Amnesty International had criticised European countries and the US for op erating contrary to basic legal principles and has called on the US to put an end to ren dition, conduct independent and thorough investigations in the practice.

“The high rate of errone ous renditions, ineffective ness of coercive interroga tion, and the reason that it instigated an unwarranted war in Iraq, make the practice undesirable.”

The group said the US remained the undisputable hope of the world, imploring it to re-evaluate how it imple mented the policy on a tactical, operational and strategic level.

Kashamu’s lawyer had raised the alarm over alleged moves by the United States government to extract his client, a move Kashamu said was the handiwork of opponents.

A former Bayelsa State governor, Timipre Sylva, has stated that president Goodluck Jonathan will only be welcomed in his country home of Otuoke, because he betrayed and disappointed the entire Niger-Deltans.

Sylva said Niger Deltans had at first believed in Jonathan but eventually lost trust in him because he didn’t do anything to develop the area in his 6-year tenure.

Speaking with Punch, the APC chieftain said “every Niger Deltan knows and a few people have said it and I don’t want to repeat what others have said. Niger Delta is actually in a worse situation today than we have ever been in our history because we have got nothing from this Presidency. Therefore, Niger Delta people, including myself, feel very betrayed.”

He added that Bayelsa State is “the least developed industrially and commercially” of all the 36 states in Nigeria and that president Jonathan will get a hero’s welcome only in Otuoke.

“I mean you can’t begrudge him whatever welcome he receives in his village. I don’t want to know, Otuoke is a small, tiny village. He probably would not receive a hero’s welcome in my village or in the larger Bayelsa public, but in his village, whatever welcome he gets, we give it to him. You can’t begrudge him the welcome he would get in his village,” he added.
