Politics › EFCC Boss, Magu Reveals Why He Is Happy Senate Rejected Him Twice by midolian(op): 5:48pm On Dec 14, 2018*. Modified: 6:23pm On Dec 14, 2018 |
The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, on Thursday said that he was happy the Senate refused to confirm him as the substantive chairman of the anti-graft agency.
Magu, speaking before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, said if the Senate had confirmed him, he probably would not have been able to perform as much as he had done.
The acting chairman was testifying in a libel suit he filed against The Sun Newspaper.
Magu had sued publishers of the Sun Newspaper for a series of publications, which he described as libellous and injurious to his character.
Under cross-examination by the respondent’s counsel, Charles Enwelunta, he said he was not worried that he had been rejected by the Senate twice.
“I have been rejected by the Senate twice and it does not worry me that I’m not confirmed; I’m not bothered.
“It’s good that they did not confirm me, I may not be able to work very well as we have been able to get over 700 convictions,” Magu said. http://dailypost.ng/2018/12/14/efcc-boss-magu-reveals-happy-senate-rejected-twice/https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Ibrahim-Magu_0.jpgLalasticlala |

Politics › Uche Nwosu: We Are For Buhari, Blackmail Us Or Not by midolian(op): 9:19am On Dec 14, 2018 |
The governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, AA, and son-in-law to Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Mr. Uche Nwosu, has said he would not succumb to any form of blackmail in his support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term bid.
Nwosu said this yesterday in Owerri while re-stating his support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election in 2019.
He added that nobody would be allowed to rig the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Recall that Nwosu dumped the All Progressives Congress, APC, for AA, after a guber parallel primaries in the state at the end of which he lost the governorship ticket to Senator Hope Uzodimma.
Nwosu said: “In fact, anybody thinking of rigging the 2019 election is making a big mistake because we will resist it. The youths of Imo state will resist it, the women and the leaders of the state will resist it.
“If you are not popular, you are not popular and INEC knows that it is not possible to write result in Imo state. People should know that the era of sitting at home and writing results is gone.
“We have made up our mind to support President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and nothing can change that.
“Whether they blackmail us or not, the truth is that we have made up our mind to support President Buhari. If I am not supporting President Buhari, I won’t be putting his pictures on my billboards and campaign posters, otherwise who am I deceiving?
“In 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari won with a wide margin in my Eziama-Obire Ward and in the 2019 election, despite being the governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, I will deliver President Buhari in my Ward but those running to Abuja to blackmail me cannot convince a single person to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Those relying on rigging the 2019 governorship election will be disappointed as the people of the state will resist any such attempt.”
It was his view that, “all those involved in the blackmail should come out and show us their supporters that will vote for President Buhari. All they are interested in is to use the President’s name to compromise the election. They know that they don’t stand a chance in a free and fair election but that will not work in Imo State. We have implicit trust in the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Mamoud Yakubu to deliver a credible election. So, those relying on rigging and other malpractices will fail.
“Imolites will resist any attempt to steal their mandate, the people’s vote must count.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/12/14/2019-blackmail-us-not-buhari-okorochas-son-law-uche-nwosu/https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Uche-Nwosu.jpg |

Politics › THROWBACK2014: Nigerian Govt Borrowing Billions To Pay Salaries – Okonjo-iweala by midolian(op): 3:47pm On Dec 07, 2018 |
In the face of dwindling oil revenues, Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the Federal Government has borrowed about N473billion to pay salaries and fund the 2015 budget.
The Minister, who was speaking in Abuja on the details of the N4.493trillion appropriation already passed by the National Assembly, said the federal government had to raise its borrowing level from N570 billion to N882 billion to enable it meet its financial obligations to workers and contractors.
The minister blamed it on the decline in oil revenue in late 2014, which accounted for 50 per cent cut in the total federally collectible revenue as well as the low revenue receipts from non-oil sources.
Despite past efforts to reduce government borrowing level, she said the acute cash flow problems forced government to take the decision to curb the negative impact of revenue crunch.
The Minister said about N380billion came from external sources, while the balance is for domestic borrowing.
“We have tried to work within the budget,” she said. “Last year, the borrowing came down to about N570 billion. But, this year, because of the very difficult cash flow situation, we have provided N882billion in borrowing.
“About N380billion of that is external borrowing and the balance of N502 billion is for domestic borrowing. All we have borrowed so far is N473billion, which is within the budget.”
Contrary to recent reports that there was no provision in the budget for fuel subsidy, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said the lawmakers actually made a provision in the budget for about N100 billion for petrol and another N45.52 billion for household kerosene fuel subsidy.
Although President Goodluck Jonathan is yet to sign the 2015 Appropriation Bill into law, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said the expenditure so far made was legal, as the constitution authorises the government to incur such expenses within the first six months of a fiscal year.
She said the final budget of N4.493tillion approved by the National Assembly was higher by N51billion than the N4.425trillion draft Appropriation submitted by the President last year.
The minister added that gross federally collectible revenue increased by N169.84bn, from N9.61tn to N9.78tn as a direct result of raising the benchmark price.
Meanwhile, the Minister on Wednesday denied that Federal workers were owed salaries, saying workers’ salaries have been up to date till April.
The spokesperson to the Minister, Paul Nwabuikwu, said the difficulty in salary payment was being orchestrated by some governors, who are trying to blame the Federal for their predicament.
“The 50 per cent drop in revenues, which affects allocations through the Federation Accounts, simply means that salaries should be prioritized”, Mr. Nwabuikwu explained. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/business/182543-nigerian-govt-borrowing-billions-to-pay-salaries-okonjo-iweala.htmllalasticlala mynd44 |

Nigerians should brace for tougher economic times ahead, the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said as crude oil prices slipped to a four year low on Wednesday.
New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) December WTI oil futures sold at $75.20 per barrel on Wednesday, down $1.98, from $74.96 per barrel the previous day, the lowest level for a most-active contract since September 2010.
Though the price of sweet crude, the blend of oil export from Nigeria, rose marginally at the close of trading on Wednesday to $76.96 per barrel, it has already crashed below the $79 per barrel benchmark approved in the 2014 Appropriation Act, concerns are mounting that tough times are indeed ahead.
At the end of the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting for September, Federal, States and Local Governments were only able to go home with N603.5 billion allocation after they resolved to borrow about $2.76 billion from the Excess Crude Revenue Account to augment shortfall in revenue generated during the period.
The Federal Government had attributed the declining revenues to the fall in prices at the international oil market.
After drawing from the ECA, Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda, said the balance in the account had dropped further from $4.1 billion to about $1.34 billion at the moment.
But Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said in Lagos on Tuesday that the economic indicators show there are tougher times ahead.
Though she said the country’s External Reserves rose from $36.6billion at the end of June to $39.48billion by October 16, and the balance in the Sovereign Wealth Fund at $1.55billion, accruals from oil exports have been poor.
According to her, Nigeria would begin to feel the impact of the dropping oil prices at the international oil market, which commenced since the first half of the year.
“The country must brace up for tougher times ahead”, she said. “We need to review our expenditures and build economic buffers through budgets that would be based on modest oil prices.”
She underlined the importance of a sound macro-economic management to Nigeria at this time, particularly the need to plug all revenue leakages.
“We have not yet seen the impact of the falling oil prices in Nigeria. It will start this month. We have to drive the non-oil revenue base to be able to weather the storm that is coming,” the Minister said.
The minister said the fall in the prices of export commodities such as gold, iron ore and agricultural produce such as cocoa, cotton and coffee was bound to affect most African economies, which relied on commodity export for the sustenance of their economies. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/business/171145-brace-tougher-times-ahead-okonjo-iweala-tells-nigerians.htmllalasticlala Mynd44 |
