Politics › France Says Warlord Abou Zeid Killed by mike404(op): 10:05pm On Mar 25, 2013*. Modified: 10:28pm On Mar 25, 2013 |
Office of President Francois Hollande says death of al- Qaeda-linked North African leader is "definitively confirmed". France has said al-Qaeda-linked North African warlord Abou Zeid was killed in combat with French troops in Mali in February. In a statement on Saturday the office of French President Francois Hollande said the death was "definitively confirmed'' and that Zeid's death "marks an important step in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel". Chad's president had said earlier this month that Chadian troops had killed Abou Zeid while fighting to dislodge an al-Qaeda affiliate in northern Mali. French officials have maintained for weeks that Abou Zeid was "probably" dead but waited to conduct DNA tests to verify. Abdelhamid Abou Zeid, thought to be 47, was a pillar of the southern realm of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, responsible for the death of at least two European hostages and a leader of the extremist takeover of northern Mali. He was killed in operations in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains in northern Mali in late February, the statement from Hollande's office said. A powerful and shadowy figure, mystery surrounds even his real name. Along with his nom de guerre, Abou Zeid had an alias, Mosab Abdelouadoud, and nicknames, the emir of the south and the little emir, due to his diminutive size. But the Algerian press has raised questions about his legal identity - Abid Hamadou or Mohamed Ghedir. Disciplined radical He was viewed as a disciplined radical with close ties to the overal AQIM boss, Abdelmalek Droukdel, who oversees operations from his post in northern Algeria. Abou Zeid fought with a succession of armed movements trying to topple the Algerian state since 1992. He reportedly joined the brutal, and now defunct, Armed Islamic Group that massacred whole villages in northern Algeria, then joined the Salafist Group for Call and Combat that morphed into al- Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in 2006. An Algerian court tried him in absentia in January 2012, convicting him of belonging to an international terrorist group and sentencing him to life in prison. Abou Zeid led one of the most violent brigades of AQIM. He was believed to be holding four French nationals kidnapped two years ago at a uranium mine in Niger. The fate of those hostages, working for the French company Areva, was unclear. Abou Zeid held a Frenchman released in February 2010, and another who was executed that July. He's also been linked to the execution of a British hostage in 2009. Mali descended into chaos in the wake of a March 2012 coup, as al-Qaeda-linked rebels capitalised on the power vacuum to seize a Texas-sized triangle of desert territory in the north. The French military moved into its former colony on January 11 to push back militants linked to Abou Zeid and other extremist groups.

Politics › Re: PDP Going To War In 2015!- Tukur by mike404(m): 8:33am On Mar 24, 2013 |
omenka: National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, yesterday warned his party members that the emergence of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is for real and poses a formidable threat in the 2015 elections.
“There is a group that just came up and wants to sweep the mat off our feet,” Tukur said in a veiled reference to the APC at a meeting of the Northwest zone of the PDP in Kaduna.
Three of the six PDP governors in the zone - Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Aliyu Wamako (Sokoto) -were absent at the meeting. It was, however, attended by Governors Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State, Usman Dakingari (Kebbi) and the host, Mukthar Ramalan Yero.
Continuing, the PDP Chairman said: “PDP is all about patronage. We are going to dole out our patronage to all our members who remain in the party.
“I am here to tell all our supporters about the virtue of patience. Patience is such a priceless thing, that the Hausa people say, ‘a patient man can cook a stone and drink its sauce’. I want to plead with our members in this zone to imbibe this teaching.
“This is because without patience, we will all be in disarray. And we cannot afford to be. THERE IS A HEAVY WAR AHEAD IN 2015. A group has come up and wants to sweep the mat off our feet. We cannot allow that to happen. The PDP is the only party that is not religious, not sectional or tribal. We are one big party, and we intend, and we must remain so.
“What I am saying here is what I told our supporters in the South West. They are not happy, because of the problem they face in the party in that zone, a minority has taken over power there.
“Let me inform you. We are going to give patronage to all our members who have contested elections and lost. There is enough in the party to go round everyone. There is no need to leave the party.” Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo who was at the meeting asked members to unite for the rebuilding of the party.
“This tour undertaken as part of the celebration of the first anniversary of the national working committee is also in line with the reconciliation, reformation and Rebuilding agenda of the party chairman,” he said, adding, “As a party that is fully organised and vibrant, well noted for its adoption of rule of law and natural justice in the discharge of its activities, the decision to embark on this tour in order to properly position the party to face future challenges is indeed paramount.
“The assembly of the crème of our party faithful at this meeting only signals and lends credence to our desire to ensure that we develop new ideas, initiatives and innovations that will further solidify the party and move it forward.
“I therefore call on us to approach today’s meeting with a clear mind and conscience and to develop more pragmatic ways that will consolidate the strength of our party by embarking on people-oriented projects and programmes in each tier of government that will not only improve the lives of our people but will create wealth amongst our citizens. “We must shun all overtures by those who are bent on destroying the party through anti-party activities and be unified in our quest to strengthen a party that has made its mark and improved the lives and well- being of our citizens. We must be unified and steadfast for the growth and strength of our great party and in the interest of our dear citizens.
“Our actions speak for us. Our laudable programmes at all the three tiers of government coupled with our respect for rule of law, good governance and democratic tenets serve as our trademark. It is in this regard that it becomes pertinent among members of this great party to carry this trademark wherever we go as a good product sells itself.
“Our greatest asset is our unity of purpose and acceptability as the only national party that has as its centre piece the popular slogan ‘Power to the People’. Once we are fully reconciled, rebuilt and reformed, we shall continue with our capability of tackling any opposition from any quarters of this country.” I totally agree with Alhaji Bamanga Tukur... Politics › Re: Parents Worried Over Lack Of Doctors In Borno State! by mike404(m): 10:14pm On Mar 23, 2013 |
clue: Lack of medical personnel in most of the hospitals in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital is becoming a source of worry for parents in the state.
Daily Post took a tour of major hospitals within the metropolis today (Saturday) and gathered that, aside the security personnel at the gates, there were only few nurses and no doctors were present in the hospitals.
Speaking to Mallam Adamu Mohammed at the Umaru Shehu specialists hospital in Bullumkuttu, he told our Correspondent that, he brought his child who is suspected to be having measles only to be disappointed as no doctors were found in the hospital.
“I have been here since 7 O’clock and I met two nurses who told me that the Doctor may be coming at 10am, so, when went back home and returned to the hospital, there was no doctor to attend to us. This is 11:30 and no doctor yet. The government has continued to tell us that they have doctors, where are the doctors now?
We, parents are worried. Those doctors are supposed to treat our children, we need them but there is none. Just look at my condition now, where do I take this child to; it’s very bad when a hospital like this cannot boast of having a resident doctor. Who would be there at all times to attend to patients?” he queried.
At the State specialists hospital in Maiduguri, the situation is also the same. Daily Post gathered that, the few doctors at the hospital do not usually come out on weekends.
Speaking with a worker at the hospital who did not want his name in print, he said “You cannot see any doctor now that is weekend, most of them that we even have would not come today, because it is weekend. You may check on monday, that is when you can see doctors, because there are only few doctors in the hospital” Asked why there were only few doctors in a hospital of the nature, he said “Doctors who were working here before were mostly none indigenes, and they all left because of the security crises.
The indigenes were mostly from southern Borno and they too left because they were not being treated fairly, that is why we have no doctors. I don’t know, but that has been the case since I started working here.

I know that when it comes to America some of you worship that country with your life and become even more defensive than you would otherwise be if someone insulted your parents. I just wonder how often Americans worship and defend Nigeria on their online forums. Any idea?
