Foreign Affairs › :O Suicide Bomber Strikes US Embassy In Turkey :O by mike404(op): 5:26pm On Feb 01, 2013
Security guard killed as bomber blows himself
up at diplomatic mission in Ankara, officials say.
A security guard has been killed after a suicide
bomber blew himself up outside the US embassy
in the Turkish capital, Ankara, the provincial
governor says.
"There were two dead in the suicide bombing, a
Turkish security guard and the bomber himself,"
Alaattin Yuksel told reporters, adding that a
woman was also wounded in Friday's blast in the
Cankaya neighbourhood.
The US ambassador to Turkey confirmed that
one of the embassy's Turkish staff was killed.
"We are very grateful to the Turkish state and
the police for the very prompt response,"
Ambassador Francis Ricciardone said. "We are
very sad of course that we lost one of our
Turkish guards at the gate."
Smoke rose from a side entrance to the embassy
after the doorway was damaged and debris sent
flying into the street. The bomb appeared to
have exploded near a security checkpoint at the
entrance of the visa section of the embassy.
"It was a huge explosion. I was sitting in my
shop when it happened. I saw what looked like a
body part on the ground,"
said travel agent Kamiyar Barnos whose shop
window was shattered around 100 metres away
from the blast.
Television footage showed a door blown out and
masonry from the wall around it scattered in
front of the entrance, although there did not
appear to be any more significant structural
damage. The explosion was heard more than a
kilometre away, reported Al Jazeera's Gonca
Senay from the scene.
Police cordoned off the street where many other
state institutions and embassies, including those
of Germany and France, are also located. A
police helicopter hovered in the air and armed
US Marines patrolled the embassy roof following
the attack.
Victoria Nuland, a US state department
spokesperson, said that investigations were
underway to find those responsible.
"We are working closely with the Turkish
national police to make a full assessment of the
damage and the casualties, and to begin an
investigation," she said in a statement.
In a statement made after the bombing,
Muammer Guler , the Turkish interior minister,
said that the bomber was about 30 years old,
and was a member of a far-left group.
"The attacks target the well-being and peace in
our country," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan said in televised remarks. "We will
stand tall and we will stand together.. we will
get over these."
In July 2008, three gunmen and three Turkish
policemen were killed in an attack outside the
well-fortified US consulate in Istanbul.

Politics › Pakistani Teen Activist Malala Will Have titanium Plate Placed In Her Skull by mike404(op): 7:48am On Jan 31, 2013
Malala Yousafzai was glad to hear that her long
ordeal of surgeries will soon be over. Just two
more to go, doctors in Britain say. Hopefully.
She will receive a titanium plate in the coming
days, to cover an opening in her skull, and an
inner ear implant.

recovery
A gunman shot the teenage activist in the head
and neck in October as she rode home from
school in Pakistan's Swat Valley.
Islamist extremists from Tehrik-e-Taliban
intended to kill her for taking a stand for the
right of girls to get an education. The terrorists
have said they will target her again.

for women
The 15-year-old's brain swelled dangerously
days after the shooting, so doctors in Pakistan
extracted a section of her skull about the size of
a hand. Otherwise, the pressure in her cranium
would have caused severe brain damage, likely
killing her.
"There is no doubt that the surgery performed in
Pakistan was life-saving," Dr. Dave Rosser,
medical director of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital
in Birmingham, UK, said Wednesday at a news
conference.
Malala has made impressive strides and faced
her medical treatment with bravery, Rosser said.
"She's very lively. She's got a great sense of
humor," he said. She is aware of her high profile
in the world and what that could mean for her
safety.

Politics › Mali Forces Advance Towards Timbuktu by mike404(op): 12:53pm On Jan 27, 2013
French-backed troops target key town after capturing rebel stronghold of Gao, as US agrees to help fuel French jets.
Mali forces backed by French troops are advancing towards the northern key town of Timbuktu after seizing the rebel stronghold of Gao, French officials have said.

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault issued the statement on Sunday after French airstrikes forced out 1`the al-Qaeda-linked fighters from northern areas, clearing the way for the ground offensive.

Ayrault said the troops were currently "around Gao and (will be) soon near Timbuktu," further west.

Al Jazeera's Mohammad Adow, reporting from Mauritania's border with Mali, said that Malian and French troops were "less than a 100km" from Timbuktu.

Timbuktu, which has served as a centre of Islamic education for centuries, has been under the control of rebels for about 10 months.

"The Malian and the French troops have their eyes set on three main towns: Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal," Adow said.

"We also hear that there have been air bombardments in Kidal."

He also said that many rebels have been fleeing from French and Malian forces.

"The rebels are retreating from most of these towns where the Malian and French forces have been passing through and even taking them without much resistance from the rebels."

Meanwhile, the US has agreed to Paris' request to help provide vital refuelling for the ongoing French air offensive in Mali.

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta told his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian on Saturday that Washington would send tankers to help refuel French jets, a Pentagon spokesman said.

They also discussed plans for the Americans to transport troops from African nations, including Chad and Togo, to facilitate the international effort in Mali.

"The objective is that the African multinational force being put together be able to take over, and that Mali be able to begin a process of political stabilisation," Ayrault said.

A Malian security source in Gao told AFP news agency by telephone that a first contingent of Malian, Chadian and Niger troops had arrived in Gao to help secure it, having been flown in from Niamey, capital of neighbouring Niger.

Other soldiers from Chad and Niger were moving by land towards the Malian border from the Niger town of Ouallam, which lies about 100km southeast of Gao.
I just can't wait to welcome French troops in northern naija grin

elampiro: The mistake was that Nigeria players had the ball in the opponents corner flag area with 15 seconds to final whistle (93.45), why did they attempt to go and score? It was two Eagles against one Burkinababe in the corner area, they could have kept possession there for one minute the least. Instead they went to try and go into their 18 yard box, it a bit of inexperience and lots of carelessness.

Having said the above, Nigeria did well considering we are rebuilding. Westerhof lost his first to Algeria 5-1 in 1990, though he went on to play the final of the tournament. I saw a fast attacking Eagles today, the fist time in 15 years or more. We can build on this.
