It will be great if we covert several Ratel to APC. I've been in a Ratel command, only modification you would have to do is add/replace the currents seats, and maybe a slight modification to the turret, all and all i dont think it will cost more than R50 000 Rand to convert a Ratel command to an APC.
BUT we should still keep our Ratel90 and Ratel81 as there are no Badger variants to replace them, Also the Ratel ZT3 and RatelEAOS should also not be replaced but Rather complemented by their equivalent Badger variants.
The fire support and mortar variant replace those two.
Regarding the 90 I'd support removing the gun and putting it on a smaller vehicle like the RG-35.
jln115: I know the G2s are still fired regularly for all sorts of events, At my university they fire a G2 before every Varsity Cup Game to signal the start of the match.
The G4/M71 howitzer are another matter, in fact i don't think I've ever seen one, I know the SANDF has all 32 in reserve.
The 88mm G1 howitzer/ QF 25-pounder is what is used for many ceremonies.
Some of the 140mm G2s were donated to Namibia when they deployed to the DRC in 90s.
Have you also ever seen the SANDF's Russian MANPADS paraded? Were used to guard our artillery guns during the war in Angola currently in reserve.
jln115: Very nice Reutech! But i think will stick with Thales man portable squire radar..........All thanks to that sh1tty 80s retro music garbage playing in the backround!!
Reutech has a similar man portable one the RSR 950 Ngada.
The defence force needs to expand this capability. With other electronic warfare sensors, smaller UAV etc
jln115: The pic has been on social media platforms for a few weeks now, also if they were supposed to stay unknown/Classified they wouldn't have taken the photo with their name and rank clearly visible in the first place.
Most of the time they're taken by soldiers who aren't part of unit.
During March 2015 two A109 helicopters assisted with the training of South Africa's contribution towards the foreign intervention brigade stationed in Goma DRC.
africaken: there was alshabaab video of an ambush on a ethiopia convoy in somalia, after an IED immobilized the ethiopia WZ551 the rest of the convoy was just massacred.in this day and age building an APC with no V hull is suicide and most of this WZ551 are armed with a 12.7mm machine gun while alshabaab are mounting their technicals with ZU-23-2 anti aircraft gun
Well in reality V hulls are starting to be abandoned in favour of flat floor mine production which reduces the height of the vehicles presenting a smaller target to potential enemies.
Examples of vehicles going into production with such tech is the Paramount Mbombe and ofcourse the Badger.
The WZ551 can be armed with higher calibre weapons.
No matter what system you have if your tactics or doctrine is ka..k you'll always get a hiding.
23mm anti-aircraft guns can slice open or do serious damage to almost all wheeled APCs in this world.
Henry240: I made that comment , in-terms of much broader cooperation, and not the Ikwla per say.
Wouldn't that be futile as the current Nigerian procurement system means equipment comes in dribs and drabs and sourced from many companies?
A contract could be signed for 50 vehicles with technology transfer design, development etc will take place in SA with a small numbers produced here. But when production is moved to Nigeria is the company in Nigeria likely to receive a follow on order? unlikely.
I am in support of skills transfer in the fields of maintanance, repair etc
Henry240: If the South-Africans agree to making the vehicles in Nigeria or a J.V with a local company, I'm all for that.
Upgrade.
with the introduction of the Badger ICV more Ratels will sold, meaning the company can offer them upgraded to the Iklwa standard will local input of the buyer.
It's all about negotiations. I don't remember SA refusing to sell equipment to friendly countries.
gottfried21: In their defense..."The kids" are armed and dangerous...Their also serving as a buffer between the group and the residents of Brakwater who are also armed and not very happy...I predict more violence and unrest to come...and the gunfire last night war very close to where I reside...No taking chances...Will sleep like this tonight
Look mate I know some association which collects old army vehicles.
During these times aren't you interest in an MRAP?

like this MD53O give to Afghanistan mounted with 12.7 mm machine guns
Kenya doesn't have spare M39 cannons?
A simple solution can be like us, Portugal and the then Rhodesia which used these types of cannons on helicopters supporting quick reaction forces. Popular was the Rhodesian fire force tactic.
The last time a South African Oryx gunship armed with a 20mm cannon was used was in Lesotho, during the skirmish at the Katse dam.
High explosive rounds are effective in hard surfaces as they spread splinters unlike in soft surfaces where the blast is absorbed.
jln115: Qualification of what the company designates FZ275 LGR is now planned for the beginning of 2018, with initial deliveries to an undisclosed customer beginning in 2019. "Development [of the FZ275 LGR] is mainly completed. FZ expects the laser-guided rockets to be available as COTS [commercial off-the-shelf] in early 2019," an FZ spokesperson told IHS Jane's .
SAAF maybe? This will work out much cheaper than arming the Rooivalk with conventional air-surface missiles, and will be excellent for COIN warfare!
As currently the choppers have to unleash salvos of rockets to silence stuff like anti-aircraft guns.
It would also be execellent for semi-conventional and conventional against foes with limited air defence capabilities, as it allows the choppers to operate at NOE only popping up to deliver weapons.
For infantry on the ground low flying choppers are confusing as you can't really tell which direction they're coming from.
gottfried21: So these guys are sailing from coast to coast in "Riverine"patrol boats with CAPDAT Cammo and all that gear? Those boats look like the ones that are used for SEAL insertion
In open sea with fast patrol boats?
Looks the guards have an effective an patrol system.
africaken: anti- balaka were just like a fly to seleka armed with machete, amulets and a few guns ,the french involvement is what curtailed their involvement in CAR
