Sure, but Klopp finding it hard to win Everton speaks more about the fixture. No just argue this thing. Merseyside derby is not an ordinary fixture just as Man City vs Liverpool is now a big fixture.
I no go follow you talk again on this same issue if you continue arguing something that shouldn't be argued.

Let me enlighten you

Finding it hard to beat Everton is not an appropriate yardstick to determine how fierce the match between us is.

Guess what? The most difficult team for Liverpool is Man Utd. They are the team that have beaten us most in the Premier league. We have met them 178 times and they have won 68 times while we have won 60 and drawn 50.

We have met Everton 206 times winning 80 times in the process while they beat us 58 times. So do the maths.

MAN UTD has one over us.

Everton na rubbish...dem just dey do all those "fierce rivalry" nonsense for PR reasons.

Liverpool's rival is Man city...if they want to win the league, Man city is the obstacle. The only rivalry Everton has is with teams like Southampton and other relegation strugglers.

Barca fiercest rivalry is with Real Madrid... Espanyol (derby rivals) is just some normal team, nothing special to Barca

I just tire. Man City have won the league 4 times in the last five years, instead of us to concentrate on breaking that monopoly, they are saying that beating Everton is more important. Which kind of thinking is this?

Oga, I don't have time for argument. Everton was the last draw we had in 2018/19 if we had won that game as you claim it was inconsequential, we would have won the league. Since Klopp became manager we won Everton back to back in the league just last season. And you saw how difficult that was.

If if if if if . . . We could have won the league last season if we had beaten Man City at Anfield going by your logic. You cannot tie your success in the league to a particular team. You can lose against your greatest rivals and still win the league! Winning the league is ultimate.

Why it's called the friendly derby is because in a family of scousers you can have a red and a blue and in games both are often sat together.
It is not divided by politics, religion or anything but it doesn't stop it from being fierce. That game ended our season in 2020/21 because of Van Dijk injury and Thiago injury.
We lost the league in 2018/19 against Everton.
I didn't hate Everton before but now I really despise them like I do United. The Everton vs Lfc game was huge then when Everton and Liverpool were big clubs and competed against each other for English titles.

We lost the league in 2019 because of Everton. What tha?
E be like I go leave this thread for una because the kind things I dey read here every dey turn my stomach.
Man City won the league 2 seasons ago while losing home and away to Man Utd.

Man Utd were busy celebrating beating City while City were celebrating running away with the title because no sensible club places priority on winning senseless derbies wins over winning the league.

What is Everton? Why should I care about beating a team that almost got relegated last season? What bragging rights are you guys talking about? Man City is turning the EPL to a monopoly but Everton is more important

Its been a while since they beat us esp at anfield and a rare victory was worthy celebrating so I can understand not because of their underdog status according to you!
When it comes to Arch rival games, there are no underdogs....last two seasons,Man city had better players than manutd and were on fire yet manutd beat them home and away...Chelsea last season were far better than arsenal but when they met at Stanford bridge, arsenal beat them.... There are no small games when it comes to rivalry esp neighbours!
I would be happy and elated if we did a double against Everton because they are our next door neighbours plus consistent bragging rights!

I don't see the rivalry you guys are talking about here. Wikipedia already rubbished all that by calling it THE FRIENDLY DERBY.

Lol... Nothing equates to trophies, so that comparison doesn't match. But if they're to lose any match between the two, Even the players will know losing against tottenham is not an option.

Moreover, I'm not personally talking about me but the domestic fans who carry it personal and which in turn create the tension for the players to find themselves in such situation. They're the one that creates the atmosphere for that rivalry to thrive

See Richarlison, he 'hates' Liverpool. On many occasions he had tried infuriating them their fans and even on pitch. He even joked about it that it's because of the culture and how Evertonian fans have dislike for Liverpool fans.

Do you know that there's a day called St Totteringham's day that arsenal fans in England always celebrate? A day in which it's mathematically impossible for tottenham to finish above arsenal.

Me and you residing in Nigeria ( or any part of the world not England) might not know the full impact on that rivalry because we are faraway, but the players and fans knows how hot and heated it's always before the match. If you're really following int'l forums of your club, you'll know all these things I'm saying.

You have proved my point - trophies!!!!
Trophies are the bedrock of rivalries. You can not talk about the rivalries without bringing trophies into play. When judging the fierceness of rivalries the first thing that is considered is trophies before history, environment and domestic fans. Just like you rightly said Nothing equates to trophies, meaning trophies over history. That's why you prefer to throw away history and environment and lose to Tottenham in order to beat Chelsea and win a trophy. Liverpool v Man Utd will always be bigger than Liverpool v Everton because of the trophies between them and not because of history. Liverpool will always want to beat Man Utd to prove a point while Man Utd will always want to be beat Liverpool no matter what, that's what drives fierce. Why would Liverpool desire to beat Everton over Man Utd whom they know that losing to them might give them the opportunity of winning the league and increasing their trophy gap? Liverpool will always want to win to equal Man Utd's record while Man Utd will always want to win to maintain the record. That's what rivalry is all about. That's what drives history. Why would I worry about beating Everton who almost got relegated than winning the league? If Man Utd beat me, it's going to increase their chances of winning the league and extending the gap, if Everton beat us they are still where they are, so why should care about losing to them. I don't how else I can explain football rivalry to you.

These statements you are making about Liverpool v Everton being fierce is false and baseless. Go and read about "Merseyside Derby" on Wikipedia. The derby is even nicknamed THE FRIENDLY DERBY. what does that tell you?

Lol, I'm not a Liverpool fan.

As for the question, it's the history, the environment and the domestic fans(especially both fans in that region). That is the rivalry.

I'm an arsenal fan and I know what a Derby means. Arsenal fans especially in England will prefer for Chelsea to beat us or even Fulham but never ever tottenham. Same thing with tottenham. No matter the poor form we have, never ever tottenham.
I follow football, their fans and also their forums(esp the int'l club fora) and if you do, you'll know that the way you're underestimating Liverpool -Everton rivalry no suppose be so. Same way it is for Madrid/athletico rivalry. It might not be worldwide but within them and the domestic fans and players, they take very very personal

And also there's difference between derby and rivalries. Nothing concern rivalry with arsenal and west ham or Fulham even though they're all London clubs

In other words, you prefer to lose to Chelsea and beat Tottenham and lose a trophy than to beat Chelsea and lose to Tottenham and win a trophy because of history, environment and domestic fans? These things are better than trophies and titles?

Lol, Man u and Liverpool rivalry is just because of how strong both team were— like mostly top 2 winnin/vying for the available trophies. Give it 10yrs from now and if man u is still average the way they are while you guys are strong the way you are presently, nobody will ever hear of Man u — Liverpool rivalry again. Highest it'll shift to Man city— Liverpool rivalry. This is different from Liverpool's rivalry with Everton that it's deeply ingrained in the fabric of the rivalry. Come rain come sunshine, Liverpool—everton rivalry will always exist maybe until one of them relegates. Same thing applies to Athletico—Madrid rivalry.

In fact, lemme ask your fellow comrades.

Which rivalry presently is the fiercest rivalry between the two. That is the rivalry that both Liverpool fans in England and Liverpool players take more seriously?

Liverpool—Everton or Liverpool— Man u

Capdan21, Openmine, Anfieldfan, Minemerys.
You are not even a Liverpool fan?

Bros you are mistaking local rivalry for biggest rivalry. Liverpool's biggest local rival is Everton but their biggest rival in the country is Man Utd. How can local trump country wide?

What is your basis for postulating that one rivalry is bigger than the other?

That Everton is also based in Merseyside doesnt qualify them to be Liverpool's greatest rival. That they are based in the same city doesn't make them their biggest rival.

Chelsea and Fulham are based in Fulham . . does that make Fulham Chelsea's biggest rivals?

So you are saying that a match between Espanyol and Barcelona is considered greater than El Clasico? Haba!

Local derby can never be superior to country wide rivalry!

No Madrid fan whether in Nigeria or Spain (esp Spain) would tell you they don't put much seriousness when they want to play athletico. In fact to native Spanish and Madridsters, their rivalry against athletico is bigger than that against Barca. Why you here in Nigeria is seeing Madrid-Barca rivalry as the biggest is because of how big both teams are thus it's worldwide attention.

Same way no English Liverpool fan would tell you they're not putting more seriousness against Everton compared to Man u. Check int'l fora when both games wanna play and see the anxiety and tension before the matches.

You are just selling El Classico short. There is nothing you are going say to convince anybody that Athletico v Madrid carries the same weight as El Classico.

2019/2020, Athletico Madrid walloped real Madrid 7-3 in a pre season game(biggest rivals).

Guess who won the league that same season proper? Real Madrid.

While athletico finished a distant 3rd.

Meanwhile as the season progressed and they met, athletico didn't win real Madrid home and away neither did they even score a goal that same season

Athletico Madrid v Madrid is not the same as Liverpool Man Utd, the equivalent of that in Spain is Madrid v Barcelona so bring another point cos this one won't fly.

I personally don't watch preseason games. In fact, there's no such thing as rivalry in a preseason game. It's the main reason why goals scored there are not counted as career goals and trophies won are not acknowledged by the club. Even points does not count

If all those things I listed aren't important in the said game, why then will a player or coach wants to kill themselves? Reason am na grin

Pre season matches affect overall team performance to some extent. There will always be rivalry between Liverpool v Man Utd irrespective of the variables involved just like Messi v Ronaldo, Mourinho v Pep or Barcelona v Madrid - you just don't want to admit it.

I didn't say players should kill themselves over friendly games, my point is, you don't have to get disgraced while playing friendlies esp. with your arch rivals. Is there anything wrong with posting decent results in friendly matches? Is that too much to ask?

I am only trying to show you that no matter a teams performance in the pre season friendlies,it counts for nothing...If you like win mancity 10-0 or beat Madrid 7-0....If you think that would imply that you have won the league or can win the UCL,then you are highly mistaken because that same club you walloped in the pre season will be a different team in a competitive game like EPL or UCL...

LFC won a then 3rd division tranmere rovers 6-0 with kids like woodburn and clarke.....shoe get size nah... grin grin

None of these matches carry the same weight as the Man Utd Liverpool game. So what point are you making here? Chelsea reached two finals and Champions League semi final and came third in the league. How do you explain that?

Man Utd finished 6th, what was Evertons position again. What is the relevance of beating me home and away if I ended up finishing above you in the league?
The Man Utd Everton game even drives my point further. They lost emphatically in pre season against this same Man Utd and they ended up fighting relegation throughout the season. Correction : One match we got destroyed and rraped by our arch rivals. It's one thing to lose a match and it's another thing to get decapitated by your biggest opponent. Any match between these two clubs can never be regarded as dead rubber even if it's played in pre pre season or inside Russian-Ukranian war. Make Thailand people catch you calling a match they paid dearly for a dead rubber game. Did you know that the ticket for that match was more expensive than that of the champions league final? OK.

You are even driving my point home with those matches you posted cos I was expecting you to show me how Liverpool lost 4 0 in pre season in the last five years against a big time and still won a major trophy. None of those matches were as important as the Man Utd game yet they didn't get cremated. Are you saying that Liverpool should take a match against Tranmare more serious than a Man Utd that the fans paid heavily to watch. Thailand fans paid through their noses to attend the match only to watch their team get incinerated by their biggest rivals. Imagine paying N300k to go watch Liverpool play against Man Utd at the national stadium and they lose emphatically.

You are entitled to your opinion and i will gladly respect that!
Manutd won a 100% of their pre season friendlies last season and yet had their worse performance in the EPL till date!
Chelsea won 80% of the pre season friendlies and yet managed to hang on to third despite their strong performance last season!
Liverpool have so far not had up to 80% wins in their pre season under Klopp and yet they have won everything!
Since you take so much grief about our loss to manutd, let me make a simple inquiry...what is the importance of the friendly?
Is there a relevant trophy to be won?
Will it give manutd a free pass to the UCL?
Will it automatically win them an EPL?
Pre season friendlies serves as a platform to give both clubs a chance to build the fitness of their players for the upcoming EPL season!
Anyone who makes the mistake of taking friendlies seriously is on their own!
Learn to choose your battles properly and prudently!

I know why teams engage in friendlies but is there a law that says you can't build players fitness without getting whitewashed? Must you lose massively in the name of testing fitness? Testing fitness doesn't involve defending well or scoring goals abi. You just run around with the ball for 90 minutes and every other thing doesn't not matter and it's irrelevant.

What is even your own assessment of fitness testing? I think Man U or Chelsea won 200% of their pre season last season but whitewashing big clubs like us? Yes? Give us the fixtures of Man U and Chelsea's pre season matches last term make we compare notes abeg.
The big question is did Liverpool get thrashed and demolished like this during last season pre season? The fact that we got decimated by our biggest rivals whether pre season or not and you are not concerned means that you are missing the big picture.
