Some people just make comments to ruin the life of others "...if e no better for me,e no go better for am".
Before I left Nigeria,I was earning close to 200k monthly, yet I wntd to leave. my friend who kept telling me trash about abroad got the opportunity and left his permanent job, wife and baby and travelled...next,I was kidnapped and nearly killed, lost everything. Luckily,I too travelled few months after him.
My advice, don't let bad belle people ruin your life! |

Hi,
I am 31,recently married (8 months),i have a job now in Nigeria that pays 170k monthly. I recently got a scholarship to study for my PhD in Germany and a Visa to resume Sept with full insurance and stipends for myself and my wife.
I have never left the country and I feel somehow about it. The uncertainty and all.
If this was you, would you take it?And why? |
Career › Re: Job In Nigeria Vs Phd Scholarship In Germany by Mishydoo(op): 9:21am On Jul 05, 2019 |
niyogeol: Dear Mishydoo,
First, congratulations on your PhD scholarship. The situation you have found yourself is not strange as most people find themselves in such from time to time. This further shows humans are truly insatiable!
I will offer my perspective on this topic as one who has studied abroad. So it might not be popular, but I am sure you will be able to validate some of my opinion yourself as one who enjoyed PTDF scholarship - assuming it was the overseas scheme.
You situation is peculiar being that you have something going for you in Nigeria, you have previously studied abroad and the fact that you are married. Going by the latter, there might be little or no room for laxity in forging the next development plan after your proposed studies in Germany. Ask me why? Because family requires money to run. Sustainable income at that. With this said, your income in Nigeria is not as bad as some posters here make it look especially if the position you are is in a field you wish to build a career, more importantly if the workplace offers the possibility of growing through the ranks. Why am I saying this? Germany only gives 18 months after your studies to seek for a job. What is the chance of finding this job? In the event none is forthcoming, how do you intend to update your residency that might be running out, considering you are married which has ruled out the possibility of marriage to an EU citizen. You might want to go the baby daddy route which I doubt. How fulfilled will you be doing unskilled job with a PhD just to remain in the system because of the fear of returning to Nigeria to start over again?
On the bright side, you can explore post doctoral position in other countries which is usually well renumerated. But one direction which this is mainly leading is academia. Are you desirous of a career there?
In all, there is no sure fix to this. Just my view. PhD is prestigious, but you also need to be forward thinking even as some people believe PhD can never go wrong. Dangote recruitment drive for truck drivers in the past has shown otherwise in Nigeria. Because las-las, na money we all dey find.
I wish you success in your endeavours, regardless of what you settle for in this beautiful dilemma of yours! THANKS FOR YOU MESSAGE. QUITE REALISTIC AND IDEAL BUT FEW THINGS I NEED TO MENTION ABOUT MY CURRENT SITUATION. 1. i am a contract staff in my current workplace 2. i have worked here for 5 years and no kobo added to my salary 3. i have done my Msc in Nigeria at my own expense, got a distinction but it isn't being recognized at my place or work. 4.i have never traveled abroad 5. I am a professional (Physical therapist) and quite experienced 6.My current job is 6 months in a year |

abnot: Speak for yourself. Migration or 1st world work experience may be valuable to you but not to everyone. It has never been a requirement for top African jobs. Some of us looked forward to making a good living out of opportunities in Africa and I never submitted a job application in any of the two countries I studied in with no regret. No regrets because you like 1% of Africans have a "Top African Job" A word of advise; Public forums/topics like this are for the ones trying to find their way. |

Same thing just happened to me in September, A friend in Lagos called me to check his project with a customer in etchie.I thought they had been doing business before,I never knew he hasn't met the people and they were kidnappers.
That's how I went to help my friend assess the cost of his job and met 6 kindappers. He gave them my number and one Honourable called me screaming on the phone I should come fast that he was travelling,I drove down all the way from Woji,I had not heard of kidnappings there before.
Just by the market before Okehi they came out of the bush and carried me.Took cash even called for ransom in tune of 5M.Police came to deflate my tires so they couldn't get the car. This happened one month to my wedding...so all my wedding funds were wiped off.
Pray not to be unfortunate in a bid to help someone out.Now I don't even go anywhere in this Ph anymore. |

9)Make sure you have a sense of direction as you travel even though blindfolded, always know the direction to run through even though you are blindfolded in case the oppourtunity presents itself
10)Make sure you go to the police immediately you are released, thank God for your life and begin to recoup as soon as possible.
In all this I would not wish this experience on my worst enemy, the trauma is horrible.Stay safe |

6) Always remember that cash can be easily replaced, but life and bodily injuries can not be easily dealt with... 7) When you are allowed to call, make sure you choose someone who is most likely to have money and willing to pay or lend you IMMEDIATELY.remember time is of the essence, the more you stay captive, the less likely you leave unharmed When held captive try to keep as calm as possible, speak only when spoken to, NEVER ARGUE,if they offer you water or food,accept...you need all the strength you can get! |

2) Keep the ATM card to your main (savings) at home, better still do not collect debit card for such accounts (I had all my cards on me,so my whole life savings where collected)
3) The moment you are abducted,DO NOT LOOK AT ANYONE IN THE FACE,this will determine if you survive or not.
4) Cooperate with them and give all details they demand truthfully, the beatings and mutilations would be less.
5)DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE EXCEPT YOU ARE 100% SURE YOU WILL MAKE IT.if they catch you after atempted escape, your case is sorry. |
