Tragedy struck on Monday at the Iganmu office of the Golden Penny Flour Mills Plc. in Lagos State after an explosion erupted from a boiler at the production section of the company and killed a worker, Folorunso Odunayo. It was gathered that the deceased worked at the engine room of the firm. Hot water contained in the boiler was said to have spilled on the worker after it reportedly exploded. The worker died on the spot. PUNCH Metro gathered that officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, Iganmu branch, who were alerted to the incident, took the corpse away. When contacted the company’s Secretary/Director, Alhaji Olalekan Saliu, said, “I am not in Lagos.” However, the company Learning Administrator, Mrs. Nike Adekoya-Saani, confirmed the incident, adding that she had yet to get the details. “It happened at our Iganmu branch office. I was just informed this evening. I don’t have the full details,” she said. The Director of the fire service, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, said, “We received a call that there was an explosion at the Golden Penny Flour Mills at Eric More, Iganmu. It claimed the life of a man working inside then engine room. We handed the corpse to the police.” Cc:lalasticlala Source: http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/worker-dies-as-explosion-rocks-golden-penny-flour/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari regretted yesterday that many good Nigerians who would have been qualified for ministerial positions had been compromised. He, however, noted that even though for want of credible persons, the ministerial list is being delayed, he will not risk appointing such people into his cabinet because it would amount to taking the country back to square one. Buhari who said this when he appeared as a guest on Good Morning Nigeria, a breakfast network programme of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), also assured that the federal government is perfecting the necessary documents with which to prosecute crude oil thieves in the country. He said up to the 10th of this month, oil thieves continued lifting crude oil illegally, adding that the culprits are people in government. On the ministerial appointments, the president said the process is taking too long because capable persons in the country have been compromised by people who planned to use them to destroy the country’s economy. He said, “From what I have seen so far, we need very patriotic Nigerians, Nigerians that can work very hard with knowledgeable experience, committed Nigerians to be in charge of ministries. A lot of institutions in Nigeria are compromised, everybody for himself and God for all of us. It is most unfortunate. “We have people, educated and experienced people, but everybody seems to be working for himself on how much they could get away with as soon as possible. We have to look for technocrats and politicians. We have to look out for decent people in this class to give them the responsibility of being in charge of ministries and important parastatals”. Noting that no compromised person will make it as a minister in his government, Buhari said, “We will try as mush as possible to avoid appointing hostages; by this, I mean people who have been in the system but compromised their personal and professional integrity. It is taking so much time because a number of knowledgeable people have been compromised. “They have been compromised by people who will like to depend on them to damage our economy and security; a lot of them have been compromised. The worst thing that I think can happen is to get a compromised person to be in charge of institutions. There is no way he could be efficient or patriotic. “Somebody behind the scene will be tele- guiding him at the expense of the nation. This is what we are trying to avoid and I assure you that so much damage has been done to Nigeria. We cannot rush to give this responsibility to people that have unfortunately been compromised. “Because there is no way you can effectively supervise, let’s say 20 ministries, you have to give it to people you trust and you allow them to perform according to the constitution of the country. If you appoint compromised people, then we will be back to square one and Nigeria will be the loser”. President Buhari further said the level of corruption in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is terrible to the extent that the corporation does not even know how many bank accounts it operates. He said, “The multiparty democratic system for developing countries has its advantages and relative disadvantages in the sense that for us to get the help of the developed countries, we have to get our facts: documents, complete and reliable investigation, take them to court and get these people prosecuted. “Meanwhile, the theft continues. Up to the 10th of this month, our crude is still being illegally lifted by people who are in government. We are trying to get these documents; we are getting cooperation from the international community. We are going very soon to make sure that those who perpetrated this crime against Nigeria will be faced with facts and be taken to our courts. “We have got the cooperation of some of the countries that are the destinations of our crude and we are discussing with them. We have to maintain high confidentiality so that we don’t risk some of the people in Nigeria that are helping us to trace the destinations of this stolen crude and then the accounts where the proceeds are being paid instead of the federal government’s account. “I don’t think the NNPC knows how many accounts are there in which payments are made on Nigerian crude. The monumental fraud has been going on for a number of years; a lot of Nigerians cannot comprehend it”. He added that the moment Nigeria complies with the requirements of the benefitting countries, “they are very willing to make sure that all those accounts are frozen and the money repatriated to Nigeria. It is not an easy process but I assure you that we are working very hard.” On the leadership crisis in the National Assembly, the president explained that he decided not to interfere because doing so will be against the principle of separation of powers. He regretted, however, that because of selfish ambitions, the All Progressives Congress (APC) members in the federal legislature allowed the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to take advantage of the crisis and relegate the ruling party to the background. His words: “I have to be very sensitive to the constitution of the country. I do not like to be told by anybody especially the legislators that I am interfering in their matter. There are three arms of government: executive, legislature and the judiciary. “Over the last 16 years, they have developed the system of choosing their leaders. There is no way I can directly interfere. All I can do through the party is to appeal to their conscience that what I already observed, we should go over it as soon as possible.” “When I say we, I mean the APC. We cannot win the battle and lose the war. We must not allow individual personal ambition to succeed in dividing us and allow PDP to deal with us. This is what the National Assembly has allowed so far, the APC is giving the PDP the allowance to take over the government again. “This is extremely disheartening, I am very worried. The only think I can do is to appeal to the conscience of the APC members in the Senate and House. It took us time to get to where we are, I don’t want personal ambitions to scuttle our success and therefore fail to deliver on our promises to the nation”. On reports that he was planning split the NNPC into two, Buhari who noted that he also read the reports noted that the best way to go about it is to first establish the fact of the magnitude of the inexplicable way the NNPC conducted itself. He also blamed the protracted fuel scarcity in the country on corruption which he said had killed all important public institutions. He said, “When we do that, we will be on higher moral ground to do whatever recommendations made to us. The problem of fuel scarcity is one of the problems. We all know we used to have four refineries refining daily on the average of about 450,000 barrels per day. “We had 25 depots all over the country from Maiduguri to Ilorin, from Gusau to Yola, from Makurdi to Port Harcourt to Ibadan. All these infrastructure have virtually been vandalized amd Nigerians are forced to buy products from world markets as if Nigeria hasn’t invested in the industry. “This is sheer corruption and inefficiency. This situation cannot be undone overnight. Firstly, we have to organize with our partners who had been developing the petroleum sector. Nigeria was constituency losing on a daily basis millions of dollars. “I think those who have been operating in the industry have been displaying lack of conscience and patriotism. Only God knows the amount of damage done to Nigeria”. On whether the United States is willing to sell arms to Nigerian following the President’s four day visit to the country, Buhari said his administration had been able get clear cut assurance from the US that it assist Nigeria in many ramifications. “Americans are willing to help us, they understand our problems, they sympathize with us”, he stated. A man, who worked as a cleaner in a building on Tony Oghenejode Close, off Omorinre Johnson Street, in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State, has allegedly led a three-man gang to rob two residents ─ a lawyer, Adaku Ufere and her brother, Chukwuebuka ─ in the neighbourhood. It was learnt that the cleaner, identified only as Jasper, connived with other suspects, Monday Daniel and Joseph Timileyin, to burgle the flat of the residents around 3am on June 23, carting away property worth N650,000. Some of the stolen items include, two laptops, a wrist watch and an iphone. It was gathered that the lawyer raised the alarm as the robbers left, leading to Daniel’s arrest by security guards. He was reportedly nabbed with the laptops and was handed over to the police. It was learnt that he later led the police to apprehend Timilehin. PUNCH Metro learnt that the gang had carried out other robbery operations in the Lekki and Victoria Island areas. The suspects reportedly confessed to taking part in the robbery of a businesswoman, Jolomi Etabuko, who lived on Ihuntayi Street, Victoria Island. PUNCH Metro had reported on May 20 that one Yusuf Olalekan, who is now in remand at the Ikoyi Prison, and other fleeing accomplices, stabbed Etabuko multiple times after dispossessing her of valuables worth N2.2m. Twenty-year-old Daniel, who hails from Cross River State, told the police that he had been involved in seven robbery operations within a year. He said his role was to stay outside and alert his members to the presence of policemen. He said, “I am a labourer, but due to keeping bad friends, I have involved myself in series of robbery for one year now. Jasper, Wale (Timileyin) and I conspired to rob the complainant. It was Jasper, a domestic cleaner at a building on the street, that invited us for the robbery. “In three of our robbery operations, my share was N38,000, N28,000 and N57,000 respectively. We sold the stolen items to one man at a market on the Lagos Island. I don’t know his name but I can identify him in person. “Whenever we go out for an operation, my duty is to stand outside and watch. It is true that a few months ago Wale, Yusuf (Olalekan) and I went to rob Etabuko on the Victoria Island, but it was Yusuf who stabbed the woman before we escaped.” In his statement, 22-year-old Timileyin, an indigene of Ogun State, said his wife had warned him against robbery. He said she relocated to Ibadan, Oyo State, when he refused to listen to her. He said, “I’m a National Diploma student. My first operation was that of Etabuko. Only Yusuf (Olalekan) and I entered her apartment, but it was Yusuf who stabbed her.” Seven counts bordering on burglary, stealing and robbery were preferred against the defendants by a police prosecutor, Sergeant Daniel Ighodalo, who arraigned them before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on the Lagos Island. The charges read in part, “That you, Monday Daniel, Joseph Timileyin and others now at large, on June 23, 2015 at about 3am, on Tony Oghenejode Close, off Omorinre Johnson Street, in the Lekki Phase 1, Eti-Osa Local Government Area, Lagos, within Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit: burgling the house of one Adaku Ufere. “That you, and others now at large, on the same date, time and place, in the aforesaid magisterial district, did steal one Mac Book laptop valued at N280,000; a Del laptop worth N120,000; an iphone valued at N185,000 and Guess watch worth N8,000 ─ all valued at N653,000 ─ property of Chukwuebuka Ufere. “That you, Yusuf Olalekan, and others now at large, on April 20, 2015, at about 2am, at Plot 2, Block 14, Ihuntayi Street, Victoria Island, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did cause grievous harm to one Jolomi Etabuko and robbed her of $300, a box of gold jewellery valued at $7,000; two iphones valued at N400,000; Samsung Galaxy with two SIM cards valued at N30,000, Sony laptop worth $1000, ipad worth N130,000. All valued at N2.2m.” The defendants’ pleas were not taken by the court. The presiding magistrate, Mrs. A. Tobi, ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison and their case file be transferred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. The case was adjourned till August 24, 2015. The All Progressives Congress on Thursday dismissed an allegation by the Peoples Democratic Party that the Department of State Services was interfering in electoral matters before the Rivers State Election Petitions Tribunal. In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC described the allegation as “a futile attempt by the PDP to pull the wool over the eyes of Nigerians.” The PDP had, on Wednesday, alleged that the Director-General, DSS, Mr. Lawal Daura, was using his office to interfere in electoral matters currently before some election petitions tribunals. The party further alleged that Daura had even invited some security chiefs and some members of the tribunals with the aim of interrogating them. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, stated these at a press briefing in Abuja. But the APC explained that the invitation of some officials of the Rivers State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission was prompted by a petition to the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General, DSS, by the APC that the INEC officials were colluding with the PDP to deny the APC access to key documents used for the last governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state. Also contained in the petition, the APC said, was the allegation that some directors at the INEC head office in Abuja had been trying to deny the APC access to some documents used for the elections. This, the party said, was against the directive of the INEC Chairman that the INEC officials should promptly release the documents. The APC also said that the IG had directed, upon the receipt of the APC petition, that the matter be investigated and that the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State should be invited. Those who were named in the APC’s petition to the security agencies, the statement said, included the Rivers State REC, Mrs. Gesila Khan; the Administrative Secretary, Mr. Obijuru Royson; Head of Operations Department, Bocco Ekong; and Legal Officer, Nancy Gaffar. The statement read, ‘’Therefore, the PDP’s wolf crying over a conspiracy it orchestrated with the Rivers INEC to deny the APC access to documents used for the said elections amounts to barefaced lies and a clear attempt at distorting facts. “These persistent refusals to release the documents are happening despite a valid order from the tribunal, and a clear violation of Section 77 (1) and (2) and other provisions of the Electoral Act. “In addition, there is also a deliberate effort by the conspirators (Rivers INEC and the PDP) to destroy the documents so as not to allow the APC to have access to them, and then report their loss to the police. One of such cases was filed on June 29 at the Akinima Police Station in the Ahoada-West area.” The party accused the PDP of doing everything possible to sabotage the search for the truth, and pointing accusing fingers to deceive the unsuspecting public. It added, “Having willfully used the security agencies as a tool to rig elections, harass the opposition and tamper with evidence in all its 16 years of shame in office, the PDP now believes the APC will do the same. “That is wrong, because the APC is a party founded on the rule of law. As far as we in the APC are concerned, let the lawful procedures be followed and let the truth prevail in the cases before the various election petitions tribunals across the country.” Cc:lalasticlala Source: http://www.punchng.com/politics/dss-not-interfering-in-rivers-tribunal-apc/

The lawmaker representing Ojo federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Obasa, has asked the All Progressives Congress to desist from attacking the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. Obasa, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the plot to remove Ekweremadu would fail because the APC cannot form a quorum to remove him. The Peoples Democratic Party lawmaker said rather than plot the removal of Ekweremadu, the APC “should be grateful to the PDP for allowing an APC senator to emerge as Senate President because it was easier for the PDP to produce the Senate President on June 9.” According to Obasa, the aggrieved senators should respect the principle of federal character in allocating positions in the National Assembly, in such a way that all geopolitical zones are adequately represented. Obasa warned the APC to stop overheating the polity, noting that the National Assembly crisis was not healthy for the country’s democracy. He, therefore, urged members of the Senate Unity Forum to accept Ekweremadu as the deputy senate president and begin their legislative duties. He said, “The principle of zoning in Nigeria is the simplest way to ensure stability in the country. The APC as a party should be grateful to the PDP for allowing an APC senator to emerge as senate president. It was easier for the PDP to produce the senate president on June 9. “According to the Nigeria’s constitution, the guidelines for impeaching the deputy senate president are simple and clear but there is no way the APC can achieve that; they don’t have the required fraction to impeach Ekweremadu. For peace to reign, they should stop playing the role of an opposition in heating up their own government at the centre, they should remember that Nigerians are eager for change and for such to come to reality, they should stop distracting President Muhammadu Buhari. “Sixteen years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria is worthy of celebration because this has never happened in the past. We must play the game according to the rules, the people’s sovereignty, which is the national interest, must supersede party supremacy. There are more than 20 political parties in Nigeria, the APC is just fortunate to be at the centre and they should start behaving as mothers of all.” Cc:lalasticlala Source: http://www.punchng.com/politics/plot-against-ekweremadull-fail-says-rep/

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday entered judgment in favour of one of the suspects of an alleged N1bn pension scam in the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mrs. Patricia Onyeabo, who died in police custody on May 16, 2014. Justice Mohammed Idris, who gave judgment on a fundamental rights enforcement case filed by the daughter of the deceased, Amaka, awarded N100m damages against the Nigeria Police Force for Onyeabo’s death. The judge found the police culpable for denying the deceased access to hospital, saying the woman would not have died if the police had allowed her to visit a hospital. “I hold that the Nigeria Police have failed in their responsibility. “The applicant had a right to life and dignity of human person but was denied while in the custody of the police, thereby leading to her life being terminated. If she was allowed access to the hospital, she would not have died. “The police denied her the opportunity to visit the hospital for the treatment of her ailment, therefore the applicant deserves general damages in the sum of N100m,” Idris held. Onyeabo, a former legal adviser and secretary to the NRC, had died in the police custody in May 2014, about four weeks after the police detained her over an alleged N1bn pension fraud, in which the deceased was implicated. The deceased was reportedly being investigated alongside her co-suspects, Celestine Chukwu, Eunagbe and Olumide Lawal, who were entrusted with the management of the NRC workers’ contributory pension scheme. They were said to have been initially detained at the Nigerian Railway Police Command in Ebute-Meta, Lagos, before being transferred to the Federal Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja. Onyeabo was said to have died about five days after being moved to Abuja. Her daughter, through her counsel, Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN), had instituted a fundamental rights enforcement action against the police claiming N1bn for general and aggravated damages over the “unlawful detention, harassment and intimidation of the applicant’s deceased mother.” Idigbe claimed that the police had violated the fundamental rights of the deceased to life, dignity of human person, personal liberty, freedom of movement and fair hearing as enshrined in sections 33, 34, 35, 36 and 46 of the 1999 Constitution. The monetary damages claim, Idigbe said was meant to assuage the pain caused the daughter of the deceased, Amaka, over the “continous deterioration of the applicant’s deceased mother’s health until her very painful and very premature death; complete degradation, loss of reputation and goodwill of the applicant’s deceased mother’s family name built by sheer hard work, the collective shame and ostracism suffered by the entire Onyeabo family as a result of the lawless and abusive acts of the respondents.” Cc:lalasticlala Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/police-to-pay-n100m-damages-for-suspects-death/
