Tragedy struck in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos last Friday when a former Supervisory Councillor in the Kosofe Local Government Area, Olu Ogunbanjo, died from a generator fire which razed his music shop. PUNCH Metro learnt that 51-year-old Ogunbanjo, who served in the LGA between 2003 and 2007, died at the General Hospital, Gbagada, from the burns sustained during the incident. Our correspondent gathered that at about 5pm on Friday, Ogunbanjo, who was also a member of the Music Advertisement Association, was in his shop on Olabode Aluko Street in the Oworonshoki area. It was learnt that Ogunbanjo later put on the generator, but there was a spark which led to the fire. The fire was said to have burnt the ex-councillor in the arms and thighs, after which his workers reportedly rushed him to a nearby hospital. Our correspondent learnt that the matter was reported at the Oworonshoki Police Division, while men of the state fire service were contacted. It was the firefighters that put out the fire. The fire was said to have razed items in the shop, such as audio tapes and DVDs. The former councillor, who was transferred to the general hospital, however, died in the evening. When PUNCH Metro visited the area on Tuesday, the rubble of some of the items affected by the fire could be seen. One of the shop owners, who identified himself only as Tajudeen, said the councillor’s death was shocking. He said, “I was still with the honourable (Ogunbanjo) on Thursday and we played draft. He was relaxing inside the shop until he felt like putting on the generator. There was a spark which led to the fire, and the fire affected his arms and thighs. “But no one expected him to die. We were shocked to learn he has passed on. His workers usually sold cassettes, tapes and cut people’s hair in the shop. He was a good man.” Another shop owner, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that the shop had yet to be opened for business since Friday. At Ogunbanjo’s apartment on Ojileru Street, a crowd of sympathisers were seen comforting the wife and the children. One of the relations, identified only as Victor, told PUNCH Metro that the former councillor was still in the mortuary, adding that he would be buried on Thursday (today). He said, “We are taking him to the Mowe, Ibafo area tomorrow (Thursday) for burial. He battled for survival at the hospital, but he did not make it.” The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Patricia Amadin, confirmed the fire incident, adding that the police did not suspect arson. She said, “A distress call was received on the said day, and the police moved to the scene to prevent hoodlums from taking an advantage of the unfortunate situation. “The councilor sustained injuries in the fire and was rushed to a general hospital, where he died. Arson is not suspected.” Cc:lalasticlala Source: http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/generator-fire-kills-lagos-ex-councillor/

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Hajiya Zainab Shamsuna-Ahmed, on Wednesday said between 2009 and 2012, about 160 million barrels of oil valued at $13.7bn was stolen under the watch of the national oil giant, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. She also said that subsidy payment from 2005 to 2012 indicated that $11.63bn had been paid to the NNPC but that “there is no evidence of the money being remitted to the federation account.” The NEITI boss, who called on the Federal Government to privatize the refineries, stated this during a courtesy call on Governor Nasir el-Rufai, at Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna, on Wednesday. El-Rufai is among the four governors appointed by the National Economic Council to scrutinise the accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Excess Crude Account managed by the administration of Goodluck Jonathan. Part of the terms of reference was to unravel the N3.8trn not remitted to the Federation Account by the national oil giant between 2012 and May 2015, as well as $2.1bn said to have been deducted from the Excess Crude Account. Governors of Akwa-Ibom, Edo and Gombe states were members of the team. Hajiya Ahmed said, “Crude product swap of $866m was lost from 2009 to 2011 and $8243m in 2012. Total amount expended in subsidy payment from 2005 to 2012 as captured $11.63bn have been paid to the NNPC. However, there is no evidence that these amounts were remitted to the Federation Account,” she stated. Meanwhile, Governor El-Rufai disclosed that since he called for the scrap of the NNPC, the corporation has being sponsoring articles in the media to attack him to fight on till NNPC will be killed. He added that the corporation would be made to pay all monies it owed before its final death. El-Rufai said, “NNPC has become a monster that is too powerful. I will continue to fight NNPC till it dies for Nigeria to survive. “It is either Nigerians kill NNPC or NNPC will kill Nigeria. “Since, I called for the death of NNPC, the corporation has sponsored articles attacking me, but I am telling them my skin is thicker than an elephant.” Cc:lalasticlala Source: http://www.punchng.com/news/oil-worth-13-7bn-stolen-under-nnpc-says-neiti/

The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Mr. Hassan Bello, said on Wednesday in Lagos that the nation’s Inland Container Depots would begin operations soon. Bello told the News Agency of Nigeria that the operation of the ICDs would go a long way in decongesting the access roads to the ports in Lagos as well as enhance cargo delivery. He said if 70 per cent of the cargo was taken off-dock for examination, they would be delivered at the door steps of their owners on time. “If 70 per cent of the cargo in the ports is taken off- dock for examination, then there would not be congestion either at the ports – that is – at the terminals or the roads leading to them. “This is because you would have taken the trucks off the road; you would have minimised human contact and the ocean economy that we have had in the seaports would be replicated in the hinterland where these ports are located. “It is important to note that this would also reduce the transport cost; all the trucks from Kano, Funtua, Aba, Ibadan coming to Lagos to convey cargo would not come because they have already got their ports. “This is bringing shipping to the door steps of internal shippers and reducing congestion and boosting the economy of those places where these ports are sited.” The executive secretary said Nigeria had an advantage in transit trade which had to do with the movement of cargo to neighbouring countries such as Republic of Niger and Chad.
