Quoting my neighbour word for word. Farage has won many voters to his side in the past few days/weeks, so I am not surprised they have overtaken the Conservatives,
He said that to you, an immigrant. He felt comfortable enough to say that to you. I wonder why....🤔

Well it's the UK's votes that matter, they're not a European party smiley

I have nothing against them but some of their policies are too far left. Any extremism has the potential to be dangerous, left or right.

And I hope people realise that they are not just advocating for tax increases on the super wealthy. They also want a significant tax hike (NI increase from 2% to 8%) for everyone earning over £50k, as they believe people on those salaries are well off enough to be asked to contribute more to the social net. I'm sure you would agree that £50k is by no means rich by today's standards.
The "far" implies they are willing to use violence to get into power.
Is this true of the greens?

Your points are well made, but I disagree with all of them.

Foreign investment in property in the UK has been largely negative in terms of consequences. Effectively, people in the UK, with its lowish levels of pay and high costs of living, are competing against the middle to upper classes of the whole world to own property in their own country. The only slightly positive effect has been additional government revenue from tax on property related transactions, but in my opinion any benefit is outweighed by the overall negative consequences.

While the government was gorging on Russian and sundry other dodgy origin money, and dashing out residency and citizenship to anyone who rocked up with enough money of any provenance in their pocket to pay, its people were slowly being priced out of their own capital city and other desirable locations. While most people have the impression that its mainly luxury property in upscale postcodes that foreigners are flogging among themselves, that's not the case - they're everywhere, buying up new developments offplan, etc. Oxford, for instance, is full of rich foreign students and it sometimes seems as if all of them buy property before they leave.
Bravo/Brava!!!
Was just about to say this.

No problemo. I m quite enjoying all the debates here. Learnt quite a few new things.
ReesheesuKnack:
Exactly my point. My decision to select Zahawi as an example was very deliberate.

But what you are implying by this is slightly different. There is a difference between tax evasion and tax avoidance. One is a crime, the other is not. I guess what you want is a strengthening of the tax laws to close the loop holes, not necessarily ‘tax the hell out of rich people’ or tax the rich people to stupor, simply because a GenZ or millennial next door hasn’t got their own home.

In this debate, I kinda agree with most of the points that atiku guy put forward, even if I disagree very slightly with his approach.

That’s the reason why the incoming Labour government should build more houses. 🏘️ Build. More. Instead of demonising people who buy 2nd houses to rent out, the govt should build more houses. The demand for rented accommodation will fall. The millennials and GenZ will not have to rent.
But no. The solution is to make make profit, and riches a taboo word.

Over 2,000,000 people are on Long term sickness. The solution is not how to encourage (read: mandate/force) them into work. The solution is to tax people more. What type of sense is that?
How do you get somebody on the waiting list for a knee replacement into work? Untreated anxiety ? Depression?

Until they are treated, it's wishful thinking

It's to pander to the 'tax the rich' liberal crowd. Borne out of a sense of entitlement and jealousy.
Is it though? You and I are paying appropriate tax but somebody in the same country is paying less while using public services.

What would happen if you and I decided to evade taxes too? How do we fund public services then?
Who is entitled here? The oshofree or the citizen paying appropriate taxes.

Last time I checked, I pay lesser in taxes than my Director who earns higher.
Last time I checked, I paid lesser taxes for my Ltd company, compared to the millions Nadhim Zehawi paid for his company.
Last time I checked, you, missjekyll pays lesser tax than your very senior colleague who earns more than you.
I am sure that Gary Lineaker pays more taxes than Micah Richards because Gary earns more. Isn’t that the definition of small selfish fetching small firewood?
Zahawi was forced to pay his taxes. Isn't that why he was thrown out of government. You and I are dutifully paying taxes but the wealthy are not. That's what I m against.

Paying taxes won't make them poor. We pay taxes and we are not poor, are we?

Good gracious. A very Damascene conversion.

In her defence, she has now seen the light.

But while she's right about the effects of the UK's unbridled housing market, I don't think taxing second homes (BTLs) is the way to go. A combination of demand-dampening approaches, including unloosening planning rules to make building [social] homes on brownfield easier, banning non-residents from buying property (No government of any stripe has proposed that, because it works in their favour, with all their offshore registered investment vehicles and so forth), building more social homes and keeping them in public ownership, etc. would work better.
Second homes and Buy-to-let are not the same though. I don't like any of them in this housing crisis

Well that's the reality for business. They are not charities and if the business environment does not favour them, they move, more people lose their jobs, no more tax revenues, towns go into decline, etc.

I am not anti-tax, I am pro reasonable and well thought out taxation. There is always a disadvantage or opportunity costs( effects of which are not always measurable) to these things. It might look like a win for govt revenues in the short term but it might hurt long term. A lot of these taxes don't even hurt the rich people you so much want to get money from, it's the working people it affects the most.
This is the current situation . The wealth tax and inheritance tax is designed to right the scales.

Problem is, there is a very very thin line between hypocrisy & ‘I have changed’
I can imagine the uproar that will come from you, if the Nigeria government decides to impose a 70-80% tax on every single naira you have (or will) earn in profit from the Treasury Bills you purchased back in the day.
Remember those landed property you purchased? if the Enugu or Anambra or Ekiti or Ebonyi state government decides to impose an 80% tax and increase the ground rent by 150% will you applaud them?

By the way, how dare you buy lands with your money when lots of your neighbours can’t afford to buy a 20sqM plot? How dare you buy treasury bills with your hard earned money and make profits from it when mama Nkiru at Ochanja market cannot afford to buy food? How dare you buy an extra shoe with your hard earned money when papa Akinlade next door cannot afford N1,000 for typhoid & malaria test ?

Since you have changed, maybe it’s a good time to sell all that you have purchased with your hard earned money, give your state government (in nigeria) the money to distribute to people who don’t own their houses or who have no clothes or who cannot afford hospital bills.
#shrugs
I highly recommend personal growth to everyone. To you too atiku

Missjekyll, you’ve really changed oh…
It’s amazing what the UK can do to someone.
A few years ago, the same you - on another thread was happy with recession (in Nigeria) because it allows you to use small money to purchase massive pieces of land. You were happy with recession because it allows you to accumulate money that you would otherwise not have accumulated.
Yet in the UK, you have now become an advocate of the poor.

I wonder what will happen if every single profit you make on your T.Bills is taxed at the same rate you are wishing for people with 2 houses to be taxed.

Is it a crime to own property? If the source of income is legit, genuine and moral? Why should Miss B be vexed that Ms C saved money, denied herself some luxuries, invested the money and purchased a Buy-to-let house?

I really want to understand the reasoning.

E be like say for where you dey, Jeremy Corbyn dey play.

Maybe you wish for the UK to become a 100% socialist economy?
Awwwww, you noticed. Yes , I did change. It's been 4 years and I ve now fully grown into my skin.
Personal growth is awesome and I recommend it to everyone.

If your Buy to let bought with hardearned money is used to push the price of houses ,push up rent, worsen urban drift because young people cannot buy houses. Literally delay people's lives because they cannot get married, have kids because no space? Then I will support a heavy tax on it as a deterrent.
Some things should not be run like businesses. Housing is one of them, health is another.

It doesn't even grow the economy because nobody is doing business just buying up houses and tying up money for decades. It's the small small taxes from millions of tiny transactions that keep the economy ticking over.

Plus they have proposed a hefty tax on second homes, just fyi as you are opposed to additional taxation.
I ll support 2 times whatever they are proposing. Millennials like me and Gen z cannot afford even 1 house and you have 2? Tax it till the pips squeak. It's a basic human need not a business opportunity

Lol. You know I ll always support a wealth tax. Everybody should pay tax. Small fish fetch small firewood, big fish fetch big firewood.

Perusing the libdem manifesto- they seem to be a breath of fresh air and are ready to have a grown up conversation on topical issues. e.g immigration- they are looking at it from a need perspective and deciding where and how many rather than the Tories (Reform) who go would the populist narrative of 'we dont need them' but then turn around and open the flood gates.

Also, they seem to be the largest part with a reasonable percentage in England looking to reenact Brexit. I'm mixed on this. Rejoining the EU would not necessarily favour the African community in the UK esp those looking to move in. It would favour those already here as they can traverse Europe and retire wherever easily. Regarding the effect on the economy, its a mixed bag.

I'm leaning towards them. It also helps that they have a good chance in my area.

No I don't think that's what it means at all. I have read their manifesto and none of it calls for "deadly persecution" against Christians, females or non whites.

Like they would put that in their manifesto. But hypernationalism has always always lead to this in the past.

I said it was "interesting" to see if the UK would follow the same movement as Europe and the US. That doesn't equate to campaigning for or supporting Reform.

Are you not? You ve been complimentary to them in the past. If I misread you , I apologise.

However, I also do not think it is a "calamity" to have voices on the opposite side of the debate on issues such as trans Vs women's rights, Christian church Vs gay rights, energy/green issues , immigration, tax and so on.

I am happy to have opposing sides but not reform please. I will have no truck with neo nazis and white nationalists.

You do know that some policies of the far left parties such as the SNP could also be seen as catastrophic to many people such as women, whose rights and identity have systematically been infringed to cater to another group or Christian businesses that have been sued and shut down because their beliefs did not allow them to carry out the services imposed on them. Why should the rights of one group of people come at the expense of another? Balance is needed on both sides.

Is the SNP far left? Far left is socialism, what policy of theirs is socialist?

Finally, a uKiP MP was elected to parliament in 2015. UKIP is regarded as more to the right than Reform and yet Parliament did not fall down and no one faced any deadly persecution that I'm aware of.

Hitlers deadly Nazi Party also started with 1 MP then drummed up support and devastated the world . If enough wallys people vote for them, they ll be a threat .

Surge of the right/far right in European elections, particularly France, Belgium and Germany...

Macron having to call a snap election...

Only a few years ago, Marine Le Pen was dismissed as a rabid, far right "nutter", today she is positioning herself as a credible government in waiting.

Will be interesting to see how the far right i.e. Reform, performs in the UK.
You know what this means ,don't you? Far from interesting, the rise of the far right is a calamity for anyone who is not white, male,Christian or straight.

They have previous form for deadly persecution. I am usually very open to other ideas but I do not understand their supporters on this thread, to be frank.
