I came across an article where the writer was talking about the rise of ATMs in the American church and I wanted to bring it home.

The Nigerian church has gradually embraced technology in an attempt to stay relevant to the growing population of tech-savvy people. For example, in most churches, the hymn books, and local drums have been replaced with high-tech audio and visual systems, people now access their bibles via their smartphones or IPads. However, if there is one thing that has been slow to adapt, is the way tithes and offerings are being collected.

For those who don’t know, some churches have adopted the e-banking system where an online platform is created (usually integrated into the church website) that allows anyone pay their tithe and offering anywhere. I asked a devout Christian how he feels using this as a means of transacting with God, this is what he had to say “Tithe should be done in the church because it creates a personal connection between an individual, the Church and God instead of the bank.”

In order to counter his argument, in line with the way Technology is changing things and after checking out what approach the developed countries are using in their churches, I have arrived at the following conclusions:

I see a Nigerian church where Payment kiosk would be the norm and a mode of paying tithes and offerings, for those who don’t know what payment kiosks are, they are KIOSKs that provides automated bill payment, money transfer, and electronic payment (more like an advanced ATM). So people can use their debit/credit cards to pay tithes or offerings in the Church, these payment kiosks would replace your offering basket – I call it the High Tech Tithe & offering.

How long do you think it would take before this system is adopted in Nigeria (I have a feeling some churches have adopted it though)

law of demand and supply kicks in.. other search engines increases services thereby reducing cost. the profit in the system is mopped up. Google dosent want to loose customer so it reverts to free searches. QED

Google isnt the only search engine.

However, this can never happen, for one, Google is an information company and every time you do a search, they collect data and with that data, they detect trends, target marketing, and provide analytics to businesses and If their search volume decreases, their revenue would also plummet. Secondly, it has become human tendency to keep searching till we find free things on the internet, remember what happened when Megashare or Piratebay was shut down? People replaced it with Putlocker and kickass torrent, so it would be quite foolish for Google to even think about it.

In the meantime, Keep calm and continue Googling

I had a conversation with a colleague on how much everyone has to come to rely on Google – It is so bad that some of us hardly use our brains for answers, Everyone now depends on Google even for the smallest queries. I mean, why else would anyone search for “how to kiss”!

Google has integrated itself into our everyday lives. According to Internet live stats, Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second on average, which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide. Now imagine this, what if google starts charging for every search? let’s say like monthly subscription at a low cost. The truth is many people would actually pay to use that service because Google gets it right. I have tried switching search engines from time to time but found it quite limiting.

So, Let’s play pretend, Let’s assume Google starts charging for every search and people are okay ok with it, Here are some top 7 things that might happen.
