A Lagos High Court on Wednesday ordered the release of Blessing Effiong, a 19-year-old girl, who had spent nearly four years in Kirikiri Prison for alleged phone theft. In the case titled People of Lagos State vs Blessing Effiong, the teenager, whose plea was taken for the first time, was charged with possessing suspected stolen property. However, before the charge was read to her, prosecution lawyer, Mr. W.A Quadri, sought and got the court’s permission to amend the charge against the teenager. The charge reads in part, “Blessing Effiong on or about the months of July and August 2008 at Descon Hotel, Apapa Road, in the Lagos Judicial Division was found in possession of a Starcomms handset reasonably suspected to have been stolen and was unable to give satisfactory account of how she came by the same. “Having possession of a thing reasonably suspected to have been stolen contrary to Section 430 (1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C17, Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State 2003.” Effiong, who pleaded guilty, however, told the court that she was 19 years, when the judge asked her if she understood the implication of her plea. http://www.punchng.com/metro/teenager-released-four-years-after-phone-theft/

Chelsea have stepped up a bid to land Victor Moses as they are now willing to add a player to the cash they want to splash on the Wigan man. Wigan are demanding £12 million for the Nigerian, while Chelsea are said to value him at £6m, but the Stamford Bridge team who just released Cote d’Ivoire international Solomon Kalou, could now add the talented playmaker Josh McEachran to the cash to help smooth out the deal, Metro of London has reported. Keen followers of the events at Stamford Bridge believe the Ivorian may have been off loaded as part of the wider plan to accommodate Moses who made his debut with Nigeria this year. The Nigeria international winger and his agent have not hidden the intention of Moses to leave the DW Stadium. The 21-year-old star, who played all 38 English Premier League matches last season, has so far turned down an offer by Wigan to double his weekly wage of £10,000 a week. http://www.punchng.com/sports/chelsea-add-player-to-moses-swoop/

Blues Tell Ivorian Striker To Look For Another Team Ivorian international striker, Salomon Kalou English club Chelsea have not renewed the contract of Ivoirian international striker, Salomon Kalou. The 26-year old Ivoirian who arrived at the Blues in 2006 has reached the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge, and has not seen it extended by the directors at Chelsea. The 2012 European Champion with the Blues and former Feyenoord Rotterdam, Excelsior Rotterdam and ASEC d’Abidjan player competed in 167 Premier League matches, scoring 37 goals and accomplishing an impressive list of achievements in the process. Besides the Champions League which they won this year, Salomon Kalou nicked the Première League in 2010, the FA Cup three times (2007, 2010, 2012), the League Cup in 2007 and the Charity Shield in 2009. He was also the runner-up of the League Cup and the Champions League in 2008. Kalou was preceded by an excellent reputation with impressive statistics in his two final years at Feyenoord Rotterdam, where he sent the Dutch defences into a panic scoring 35 goals in 65 matches, yet never managed to stand out in London. Free to sign wherever he chooses since the end of his contract, Saturday 30 June 2012, the Ivoirian international (47 caps, 15 goals) could make his destination the north of France, at Lille, a club that has been in pursuit of the player for several weeks now. In their quest to enrol Kalou, the third-placed team of this past Ligue 1 season will no doubt be competing against Schalke, Arsenal and certain Turkish clubs also hoping to win over the European champion.

Besides the N85bn earmarked in the 2012 budget to pay off workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria’s successor companies, the Federal Government is also likely to use part of the envisaged N200bn proceeds from the sale of the firms to settle the entitlements of workers. The Minister of Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji, told our correspondent on the telephone on Monday that part of the proceeds of the sale could be used to supplement the N85bn in the budget to pay off the workers. Nnaji said, “Yes it is true that the N85bn in the budget might not be enough and in that case part of the privatisation proceeds will also be used to pay the workers’ entitlements.” He told our correspondent earlier that N85bn had been earmarked for the payment of the entitlements in the 2012 budget. The PHCN workers are currently in talks with a Federal Government team over what their entitlements would be, though the talks have been largely deadlocked. The Federal Government had in 2010 earmarked about N200bn to pay PHCN workers but part of the fund was used to pay their monetisation benefits, while the remainder could not be utilised because the privatisation process could not be concluded. The Bureau of Public Enterprises has said about N200bn will be realised from the privatisation of the 18 successor companies created from the unbundling of PHCN. According to a statement issued by the spokesman, BPE, Mr. Chukuma Nwokoh, the Director-General of the bureau, Ms Bolanle Onagoruwa, said during a management retreat held in Abuja that over N1.2bn had so far been collected as privatisation proceeds for 2012. more: http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/phcn-workers-to-get-pay-offs-from-privatisation-proceeds/ |

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday nominated Justice Alooma Mukthar as Nigeria’s first female chief justice. The nomination was contained in a letter to the Senate. Jonathan also nominated Justice Clara Ogunbiyi and Justice Musa Mohammed as Justices of the Supreme Court. If her nomination scales through Senate screening, she will succeed Chief Justice Dahiru Musdapher, who is retiring soon. http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-nominates-alooma-mukthar-as-nigerias-first-female-chief-justice/ |

azubaby: @op some one said if u take clomid, ur chances of havin twin wil be high. How true is dat?Clomid is the most well-known fertility drug, probably because it is the most commonly used. And with good reason. About 25% of female factor infertility involves a problem with ovulation, and clomiphene citrate, as a fertility drug, is easy to use (taken as a pill, not an injection), with not too many side effects, is pretty inexpensive compared to other fertility drugs, and is effective in stimulating ovulation 80% of the time. So, believe God for twin(s) |
