Disadvantages Of Using A Pacifier

• Increased Ear Infections - there is a proven link between prolonged pacifier use and middle ear infections. It's thought that sucking on a pacifier increases the chance of an infection back-tracking from the mouth into the Eustachian tube (the air-filled passage connecting the middle ear with the back of the throat). Limit pacifier use to settling your baby for sleep only, to avoid such problems.

• Link To Stomach and Other Infections - pacifier use has been associated with a higher risk of symptoms such as vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and colic.

• Long-term Pacifier Use Can Lead To Dental Problems - many dentists discourage the use of pacifiers or thumb-sucking as both can result in problems as the teeth grow and develop, particularly if your child is still using this as a comfort when their permanent teeth are coming through.

• Speech Problems - using a pacifier prevents babies from babbling, which is an important step in learning to talk, and discourages toddlers from chatting, which they need to do to develop their language skills.

• Using A Pacifier On A Daily Basis Interferes With Breastfeeding - there is strong evidence that women who use pacifiers are more likely to wean their babies off the breast earlier than breastfeeding mothers who don't use pacifiers on a daily basis. Pacifier use is linked to breastfeeding exclusively for a shorter amount of time and a lack of milk when the baby is one month old.

Whether the use of pacifiers leads women to give up breastfeeding is a controversial area. Some argue that mothers use pacifiers because they are having problems breastfeeding or because they don't really want to breastfeed. Others believe that babies find it difficult to switch from sucking on a pacifier or artificial teat back to sucking on the breast - sometimes called nipple confusion. Others argue that sucking on a pacifier instead of the breast results in lack of stimulation to the breast to produce prolactin, which then results in a reduced milk supply. Women who give up breastfeeding in the first six months often give "lack of milk" as their reason for stopping.

Whatever the reason, the use of pacifiers on a daily basis has been linked to giving up breastfeeding before a baby is three months old. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) strongly discourages the use of pacifiers while breastfeeding is being established. This is in an effort to try and support mothers to breastfeed exclusively for the first six months because of the many benefits of breastfeeding.
My mom told me never to try it.

My sister, now 8, still sucks her thumb. Very hard habit to stop.

And doesn't pacifier make the babies think they're eating, therefore they lose appetite. . In turn, they won't get enough nutrition.
~Thumb Sucking & Pacifier are both very hard habits to Break . . I frown upon parents w/ kids 4/5 yrs old with Pacifiers especially . . .One of my M8's kid 5 yrs old sucks his thumb, his front teeth are now arched from all that sucking!

~I Used Dummy all of 2 wks  . .me son pushed it out everytime i tried giving it to him after that 2 wks,so am grateful he didnt get to latch on it!

~It took 2 weeks of constant crying every day to get my Twin Neices off their Dummy's when they were two years old,They wudnt sleep without it . . It worked after that 2 weekd, they didnt ask for it/Cry anymore . . .if their mum hasnt been persistent, they'll prolly still be sucking it,they'll turn 4 Next Month

~I worry that Pacifier gives babies too much wind & Colic. .all that sucking on air & spit  grin but it is belived the Dummy helps w/ Colic  undecided

Family › Re: Where Should Babies Sleep? In The Crib Or Beside Mummy? by mohawkchic(f): 5:42pm On Mar 19, 2009
~Interesting Debate . . Both has Pro's & Con's  tho!

~For me,I'd Say In The Crib ~Thats the most Basic Safety Rule!

~I wouldnt advice Any First-Time-Mum to sleep w/ new born babies on the bed tho . .Prior to me giving bath,my mam warned me strictly/countlessly not to share bed w/ baby  grin

~There were nights i could barely keep my eyes open, especially those first 2/3 months while breast feeding! My ears were getting acquinted w/ baby's cries . . while my body wanted over-time on sleep . . grin  I try not to imagine me having my baby next to me on the bed on those nights. . i slept like a log of wood . .oblivious to sound shocked Hubby's blood shot eyes will tell me his baby-bonding experience in the morning! cheesy He loved baby sleeping on his chest . . .

~Yeah its easy to speculate/think "Other mums have done it,Nuffin happened " but who's to say you have that same instinct your mam had . . .It only takes desperation to catch a couple of winks,an unconscious move from my duvet/pillows to my own body to create major threats for my New Born baby who cannot yet roll over!!Dare I say,Not a choice i want to make at all! Some of the risks involved have already been touched on . . .Needless to say It Is/Can Be Dangerous sharing bed w/ Baby!

~Equally,Babies left unsupervised/Sleep in their cribs may succumb to some Risks Too  . . .so its always adviseable not to put toys, blankets that goes over baby's head in cribs OR Putting baby Down on their Stomach/Side . . this has also caused a lot of debate . . .Some people tend to think babies sleep better on their Stomach/Side . . .me,I wasnt willing to experiment!! grin

~My Siblings & I all slept in a crib in my Parents room as Newborns,i did the same w/ my son till he was 3 months,I had the crib right next to my bed so everytime he twitches/cry he was within reach. . As i became more accustomed to the responsibilities/role of a new Mother & confident in my ability to do such, I relocated him back to his room!! cheesy Even tho i had a baby monitor,I didnt mind doing the regular runs to his room to check-up every now & again . .7 years later minus the monitor,i still do the check-up run . .ama  Proud Mama! grin

Family › Re: Parental Guide: Bringing Up A Child by mohawkchic(f): 12:53pm On Mar 19, 2009
benedictac:
Thank you all i have really leant alot from your various posts but my challenge now is that:

i had a child out of wedlock who will be 7 this year and now i am married, my hubby has requested i bring the child to help me at home that he doesnt like house helps. Now how do i face it as in i have not been with this child for about 6years.

i think i own him that motherly love that i have dennied him in the past but how do i do all these and still not make my hubby feel bad that my attention is shifting to my son as we are still trusting God for our own child.

Pls i really need good advice.
~I Find the highligthed bits very disturbing to say the least! It's Obvious You're are not emotionally attached to your son,So you prolly see no wrong in your hubby requesting you bring Your son home on the basic of helping you w/ housework! That is so wrong!

~If the purpose of you having your son back in your life is to help you out & not on the grounds of You having a mother & son r/s. . . making up for the years lost,i'd advice he's better off where he is! Me think You're torn between your consceince of not been in your son's life  but scared of the consequences of having him in your life . . most of all you're worried about how it will affect your r/s with hubby . . .

~Reading your post,it came across like you already have a life planned out w/ your hubby that didint include your son,now all of a sudden your faced with making a decision that could well affect the whole dynamics of your marriage/relationship . . which is more Important to you? Your Son Or Your Hubby?

~Prior to your hubby Requesting you bring your 7 year old to come help out as an househelp in your home have you ever considered having the child back in your life?

~My only Advice is Answer  the questons i've asked & reflect on it,I hope you'll be able to come to a decision . .

~Oh BTW this is as objective as i could be given the info you provided,am not trying to be Judgemental in any way!
