Politics / Officials Culpable For Nasarawa University Stampede Should Be Punished - NANS by mohbadliveson: 5:36pm On Mar 25
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) says the Nasarawa state government must ensure that officials found culpable for the stampede at the state’s university receive the appropriate punishment.

On March 22, three students of Nasarawa State University in Keffi (NSUK) were killed in a stampede that occurred during the distribution of rice donated by the state government.

Several others sustained injuries during the melee.

Akinteye Babatunde, senate president of NANS, said the deaths could have been avoided if those in charge of palliatives distribution had done their jobs properly.

Speaking on The Morning Brief, a programme on Channels Television, Babatunde said having recorded successes during the distribution of rice in other tertiary institutions in the state, those in charge let down their guards by not providing adequate security for the distribution at NSUK.

“As an association, we are demanding that the government should investigate the incident. We are also asking the government to hold accountable those who failed to do their job,” he said.

“In a situation like this, if people are not punished, people will be negligent in carrying out their duties".

"We have also requested that the hospital bills of those who are injured should be taken care of by the state government and sincerely, since this incident happened, the government has been cooperating.

“They took responsibility for what happened, they went to the hospital and promised to meet with the parents of those who lost their lives.

“The governor has said there will be an investigation and anyone found wanting will lose his or her job. Students have died. Those who died belong to a family.

“If we just let this incident go like that, it will look as if we don’t have respect for human lives. So, we want them to investigate the incident promptly and ensure that it’s not taking too long. They should also give us a report of the investigation.”

Babatunde said the venue should have been secured.

“When you want to get palliatives, even before the commencement of the distribution, you are to secure the venue very well because aside students, if staff have access to the palliatives, they will want to take advantage of it,” he added.

“Failure to properly secure the venue led to the unfortunate incident.”

Politics / Customs Only Arrests Smugglers Who Refuse To Pay Bribe - Fisayo Soyombo by mohbadliveson: 4:14pm On Mar 02
Fisayo Soyombo, an investigative journalist, has alleged that smugglers can bring in all sorts of goods or items into Nigeria as long as they pay bribes to personnel of the customs service.

Soyombo, who is the founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), said customs officials in Nigeria only intercept and publish names of smugglers who refuse to bribe them or who outsmart them.

Speaking during an interview on ‘Hard Copy’, a Channels Television programme, Soyombo said he had a first-hand experience of the atrocities perpetrated by customs officials when he embedded as a smuggler to bring in bags of rice from Benin Republic in 2022.

“I went into Benin Republic in November 2022, got some bags of rice and brought them to a place called Oja Odan. From Oja Odan, I was supposed to move them to Ilaro but we had to bribe customs,” he said.

“What happened was that I went in like I wanted to smuggle. I had to get smugglers already based in Ilaro and Oja Odan to take me in as part of them.

“Everything that I wrote that the smugglers told me, the smugglers believed they were speaking to a smuggler like them and not a journalist.

“When people say it is hearsay, It is not. It is just like going undercover to join a robbery gang and because you are one of them, they tell you a police commissioner is part of them. You can’t treat such information with scant regard".

“We were waiting for customs to tell us the day to move the bags of rice from Oja Odan to Ilaro and while waiting, I had to leave the country.

“So, there was a wait time because the customs officials who took money from the lead smuggler had not yet given us the all-clear.

“What happens is, if you hear or read it in any newspaper that ‘customs intercepts one million bags of rice’, those are people that did not bribe them.

“Anyone… and I say this with all conviction… anyone can bring in anything into Nigeria if you pay the right people".

“If you read any news that customs seized bags of rice or chicken, those are people that tried to outsmart them. If you bribe the right people in customs, you can bring in anything.

“When I say anything, I mean rice, chicken, turkey, arms, ammunitions, tramadol, guns and motorcycles used by terrorists in the north. These were things that were brought in.”

Politics / 2023 Elections, Our Plans Were Successfully Executed -INEC Defends Yakubu by mohbadliveson: 9:44am On Mar 01
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says those laying curses on Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the commission, should make better use of their time.

Speaking exclusively with TheCable, Rotimi Oyekanmi, chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, also admonished those attacking Yakubu to “cure themselves of their visible ignorance of the laws governing the electoral system and the commission’s processes and procedures”.

On February 25, the first year anniversary of the 2023 presidential election, some Nigerians took to social media platforms to rain curses on the electoral commission boss.

The aggrieved youths had alleged that Yakubu rigged the 2023 presidential election for incumbent President Bola Tinubu.

However, Oyekanmi described the 2023 elections as “a huge success and the most painstakingly planned”.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) believes that the 2023 general election was a huge success, despite some challenges that the commission had to grapple with,” he said.

“However, Oyekanmi described the 2023 elections as “a huge success and the most painstakingly planned”.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) believes that the 2023 general election was a huge success, despite some challenges that the commission had to grapple with,” he said.

“It was the most painstakingly election and for the most part, our plans were successfully executed.

Just last Friday, we released the official report of the election, which consisted of 526 pages, organised into 14 chapters and fortified with 60 tables, 14 boxes and 10 graphs. There is a lot to chew in the report.

“And for the first time ever in Nigeria’s electoral history, the 2023 elections unveiled unprecedented political diversity, with four political parties capturing gubernatorial seats, effectively breaking the duopoly that has long dominated the political scene.

“Besides, seven parties won senatorial seats, eight secured federal constituencies and nine were successful in state legislatures.

“While the report emphasises the significant impact of technological advancements on the integrity of the electoral process, especially the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) which reduced electoral fraud and bolstered the credibility of elections, the document also explained the challenges encountered with the INEC result viewing (IReV) portal during the presidential election.”

"With the report now in the public domain, we expect stakeholders to interrogate it and offer useful advice on how we can further improve the electoral system.”

He added that: “As for those persons who embarked on what they described as a ‘a day of curses’, my advice is that they should pay adequate attention to substantive issues, make more productive use of their time, and cure themselves of their visible ignorance of the laws governing the electoral system and the commission’s processes and procedures".

Politics / Onanuga: Why Tinubu Announced The Removal Of Fuel Subsidy On His Inauguration by mohbadliveson: 6:00pm On Feb 25
By
Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, says President Bola Tinubu acted in the best interest of Nigerians by announcing the removal of the petrol subsidy on the day of his inauguration on May 29, 2023.

Onanuga, in a chat TheCable on Sunday, said Nigeria was in serious financial trouble which prompted the president to act quickly before things got worse.

The presidential aide was reacting to an interview granted by Babachir Lawal, a former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), who said the announcement of subsidy removal by Tinubu a few minutes after his inauguration was hasty and driven by arrogance without due consultations with relevant stakeholders.

While justifying Tinubu’s action, Onanuga said there was no provision for subsidy in the budget left behind by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He added that the country was in dire financial straits as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) could no longer import petrol due to N4 trillion debt owed by the federal government.

“Is Babachir still talking? Well, that is his opinion that the subsidy was hastily removed,” Onanuga said.

“The truth is, the subsidy was meant to be removed by the end of June 2023 according to what former president, Muhammadu Buhari left behind.

“President Tinubu only announced it on May 29 on the day he was sworn in. That is to show you that something is wrong somewhere and that the nation had a problem at that time.

“What I find out is that Nigerians easily forget things, we have a short memory about things. They should cast their minds back to what happened at that period. The NNPCL was saying the government was owing them N4tr of subsidy money. NNPCL was the only importer of fuel and towards the general elections, fuel scarcity was all over the country.

“Due to the scarcity, in some places, fuel was selling for about N700 – N800 before President Tinubu was sworn in. NNPCL didn’t have money to import fuel because they were being owed over N4tr by the federal government. People have easily forgotten about that.”

Onanuga said the country would have been in deeper problems if Tinubu did not act swiftly to address the situation.

“Tinubu knew the problem and that was why he made the announcement on the day of his inauguration. The language he used was ‘Subsidy is gone’ because even in the budget, there was no provision for it,” he said.

“I will challenge journalists to go and check that budget, when you look at that budget made by Buhari before leaving office, you will find out that aside no provision for subsidy, 97 percent of our income will be spent on servicing debts. If 97 percent of budget is used to service debts, what is left for Nigerians to spend?

“That 97 percent budgeted for debt servicing does not include the money the federal government owe the NNPCL. There were serious problems then and Tinubu just needed to do something quickly to arrest the deterioration.

“You can see what has happened in the last nine months with those measures he took. Yes, those measures are painful but they are needed to reset the economy and financials of this country. Otherwise, we would have ended into a much more disastrous situation.”

Politics / Tinubu’s Government Not Communicating Hope To Nigerians, Says Agbakoba by mohbadliveson: 2:39pm On Feb 21
BY TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI

Olisa Agbakoba, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), says the administration of President Bola Tinubu is not communicating hope to Nigerians.

Speaking with TheCable on Wednesday, Agbakoba said the presidency is not leading by example by cutting down on the cost of governance.

The senior lawyer said the empathy of the government in view of the current hardship in the country is not apparent.

Agbakoba, who expressed fear about the future of Nigeria, said there is a rapidly growing revolt across the country owing to the high cost of living.

“I agree with those saying the presidency is not leading by example by moderating their lifestyles and cutting down on the cost of governance. It is very clear. The empathy of the government is not apparent,” he said.

“There is something that former US President, Franklin Roosevelt, said in the Great Depression years of America in the 1930s. The thing to do about making people happy is not to give them a job, you first give them hope.

“So, the government ought to be communicating hope. They ought to be saying ‘we are going through this difficult period but there is light at the end of the tunnel’. This government is not communicating that at all, which I think is a big error.”

‘FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE HOPE’

Agbakoba said that while Nigerians can manage in difficult times, the failure of the government to give them reassuring words is worsening the situation in the country.

“Failing to communicate hope makes Nigerians depressed. It is not that Nigerians cannot live with high food prices. They will always find ways to manage difficult situations. Even IBB (Babangida) said he doesn’t know why Nigeria has not collapsed,” he said.

“The problem we have is that the government is not communicating hope. If you communicate hope and say to a person who has malaria that ‘don’t worry, in two weeks’ time you will be well’, that will lift the person’s spirits because he has that hope.

“But right now, the government is not telling us that in two or three months, we are likely to be in a better state. That is the biggest problem that the government is not communicating properly.

“The second one is that the government is not even telling us how we can come out of this problem. That is why as we are beginning to see, there is a slow revolt around the country, pointing to a protest of costs of living. It is everywhere.”

Agbakoba called on the government to take action to address the disgruntlement being expressed by Nigerians.
