PoliticsNigerian Female Student Sentenced To Death In Malaysia by mohince(op): 9:15pm On May 15, 2015
A Nigerian female student was sentenced to death by the
Malaysian High Court on Thursday, May 14, 2015.
Daily Independent reports that the woman was found guilty
of trafficking 765.9 g of methamphetamine at the KL
International Airport (KLIA) four years ago.
Judge Datuk Ghazali Cha, passed a death sentence on 30-
year-old, Mary George Unazi, after finding that the
prosecution had managed to prove the defendant guilty.
Ghazali, in his verdict said that, the accused defense was
merely a bare denial. He added that the private college
student had also failed to prove that the bag containing the
drug was not hers.
Unazi, was said to have committed the crime at the
baggage claim area of the international arrival hall of KLIA
on May 10, 2011.
The accused was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the
Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 of Malaysia, which carries a
mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
On April 28, 2015, the Indonesian Government executed
eight drug smugglers through firing squad on the island of
Nusakambangan. After the sentence was enforced, the
Federal Government extended its condolences to the
families of the deceased and warned Nigerians to desist
from drug trafficking and other crimes that stipulates
maximum punishment in different countries of the world.
However, the United Nigerians In Diaspora, a group of
Nigerians living outside the country, has recently revealed
that eight more Nigerian nationals were sentenced to
dearth . The group, therefore, urged the federal government
to negotiate with Indonesia to stop execution of offenders.

PoliticsGive Us Back Our Money- PDP Aspirants Tell Party by mohince(op): 10:27pm On May 14, 2015
Trouble is brewing in the Adamawa State chapter of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as members under the
group name, PDP Aggrieved Aspirants Forum, has
threatened to drag the party to court, Premium Times
reports.
Their grouse with the outgoing ruling party is that, the PDP
according to them, have refused to refund the money they
used in purchasing the forms for the party’s primary
elections before the gubernatorial contest in the state.
The aspirants, who addressed journalists in Yola, on
Thursday, May 13, claimed that the party advertised for
various elective positions, but didn’t conduct the primaries.
Chairman of the group, Liazaru Eliada-Gugu said, “We the
aggrieved PDP aspirants bought forms to contest the primary
election and since they did not conduct any primary election, it
is only natural for them to return our money.
“We have made our request known to the leadership of our party
both at the state and national level. They have promised to
address the issue but up till now they have not done anything.
“When we met the national leader of the party and the national
chairman of the party, they agreed to do something about us
and we were satisfied with that meeting. But after several
weeks of waiting without response we are left with no other
option than to take our case to court.”
According to Daily Independent, Eliada-Gugu, who was a
senatorial aspirant in the election, opined that since the
party did not conduct any primary election, it was only
natural that their monies be refunded to them.
Meanwhile, a former PDP governorship candidate in Imo
State, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, has accused the party of
having no respect for democracy in Nigeria.

PoliticsBreaking: “i Will Increase Nysc Allowance To N39,800″ – Gen. Buhari by mohince(op): 6:53pm On May 13, 2015
The President elect revealed in an exclusive media chat that
he would single-handedly take the pains to make sure that
the monthly allowance paid to serving youth corpers are
increased from 19,800 Naira too 39,800 Naira if he is given
the mandate of the people to steer the nation.
According to the retired General, Jonathan’s government is
an insensitive government that is not concerned about the
welfare of the common man on the street.
There is no doubt that the monthly stipend paid to Youth
Corpers is barely sufficient to sustain them through the
month, and a number of them engage in sharp practises
and shady behaviours in order to keep body and soul
together when the 19,500 Naira gets exhausted.
General Buhari promised that he is going to vehemently
ensure that the monthly stipend paid to corpers is increased
to 39,800 Naira, in a bid to allievate the economic hardships
of the youths.
When we asked him whether he has any economic blueprint
to effect this increase in NYSC allowance, he replied that the
APC government is a government of change which is going
to come with their brooms to sweep away corruption in the
public service, and in doing so, there would be excess funds
realised from the battle against corruption which could be
siphoned into productive ventures such as the increase in
NYSC allowances.

The Kaduna State Governor-elect, Malam Nasir El-Rufa’I, on
Tuesday alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party
government has stolen so much from the national treasury,
saying the new government will politely those involved to
return all the money taken from the nation’s coffers.
He said politicians both at the state and national levels, who
have soiled their hands with public money, should be ready
to make refund as soon as the All Progressive Congress
(APC) led government takes over power on May 29.
El-Rufa’i spoke when executive members of the National
Union of Textile Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria
(NUTGTWN) paid him a courtesy visit on Tuesday.
He said the recovery of the money has become necessary
because the incoming government will inherit a bad debt
situation, adding that the APC government will ask
politicians who stole government money to return such
funds.
The Governor-elect said, “We will politely ask those who
stole government money to return the funds.
“This is because those in government now are there to
work for themselves, but the APC government is made up of
people who are ready to work for the masses and
betterment of the country.
“We will work with the textile union to ensure that lives of
average Nigerians get better.”

Wife of the Vice President, Hajia Amina Sambo, on Saturday
in Abuja, said she would go back to the classroom to
acquire more knowledge after the expiration of her
husband’s tenure on May 29.
She also advised Nigerians to pray for the incoming
administration of President-elect Muhammadu Buhari.
According to her, she will continue to remain accessible,
even though she did not disclose which institution or course
of study she intends to pursue.
Hajia Sambo, a graduate of Political Science from the
Bayero University, Kano, spoke at a ceremony organised in
her honour by the Coalition of Nigerian Muslim Women at
the National Mosque, Abuja.
The CMWIN said they were honoring Hajia Amina and the
wife of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Hajia Aisha
Mohammed, for their strive towards uplifting humanity.
The group also hailed them for being pious and not allowing
the demands of office to sway them from the right path.
She said there could be times in future when the demand of
her academic engagements would not allow her to honour
invitations to public engagements.
“I will like to continue to leave my doors open in case you
will call on me. In case I say I am having exams (I am going
back to school); so, do not be offended, I might be studying,
but be assured that I will always be with you,” Hajia Sambo
stated.
She added that all was now set for the inauguration of the
first Islamic Library in Nigeria, which is located in Kaduna
State, urging the women to strive to donate a book each to
the facility.
She commended the Muslims for their support for the
current administration, and called on them to extend the
same hand of fellowship to the incoming administration of
Buhari.
The vice president’s wife however begged the women to
forgive any real or imagined shortcomings of the outgoing
administration, assuring them of her continued support
even as a private citizen.
“I want to assure you that on my part, in my own little way, I
will continue to be of service to humanity. I will continue to
help the less-privileged in the society, the downtrodden, the
physically challenged, and most importantly, to my Deen.
Please, always pray for the incoming administration,” she
said.

PoliticsShehu Sani Blasts Jonathan, Calls His Administration‘political Restauran by mohince(op): 11:31pm On May 09, 2015
Shehu Sani, senator-elect for Kaduna Central, on May 9,
criticized Goodluck Jonathan’s administration over the sale
of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and the last-
minute sale of the Nigeria Telecommunications Limited.
Shehu Sani
Sani characterized President Jonathan’s privatization
moves as a theft of Nigeria’s resources, as he received the
Kaduna state executive of the National Union of Road
Transport Workers (NURTW).
He was quoted as saying by Premium Times:
“The sale of PHCN has not translated into consistent electric
power in our homes, in our offices , in our markets and in our
work place.
“The last minute-sale of NITEL to a private firm at a time when
the government is supposed to be preparing notes for handover
is also suspicious or irrelevant at this time.
“They claim progressive economic statistics on paper while our
people continue to suffer in abject poverty, want and penury.
“All the economic indicators that have been churned out by the
Jonathan administration is in direct conflict with the reality of
the situation on ground as far as Nigeria is concerned.

Future – Shehu Sani
“Most of our industries have closed down, the value of our naira
has crashed and many people are out of job and the claim of
thousands of jobs created by the government is suspect and
simply on paper. This is also an issue we have to look at in the
incoming administration.”
He described the outgoing administration as “literally a
political restaurant whereby people are invited to come and
feed”.
“That is why President Jonathan is saying that those who
decamped from PDP to APC will come back with empty
stomach.
“The idea of governance under Jonathan is about people using
the opportunity of being in office to service themselves and
their immediate families.
“The bickering in the PDP after the failed elections are simply
nothing but pant of death of a party that has inflicted serious
hardship on Nigerians in the last 16 years.”
Also, lamenting over the crisis within the Nigeria Labour
Congress (NLC), Sani urged Muhammadu Buhari’s
administration to reconcile the factions for the collective
interest of Nigeria and Nigerian workers.
It is not the first time Sani has expressed negative opinion
about Jonathan’s performance in the office. Last month he
focused on the foreign policy employed by the incumbent,
which he called “uncoordinated, unfocused, uninformed,
non-directional and uncolourful”

PoliticsEgyptian President, Hosni Mubarak Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison by mohince(op): 10:41pm On May 09, 2015
An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced former Egyptian
president Hosni Mubarak to 3 years in prison on corruption
charges after a retrial in Cairo. It was not clear whether the
sentence will include the time Mubarak has already served,
the Associated Press reported.
According to the court order, which also includes a 125
million Egyptian pound ($16.3 million) fine, Mubarak's sons
Gamal and Alaa were given 4 years of imprisonment each in
the same case, which centers on the embezzlement of
millions of dollars over the course of a decade. The court's
decision can be appealed, a lawyer for Mubarak reportedly
said.
The funds, which were meant to pay for renovation of
presidential palaces, were allegedly spent by Mubarak and
his sons on maintaining their private residences, AP
reported, adding that several supporters of the 87-year-old
autocrat shouted in anger as the judge announced his
verdict.
In January, an Egyptian court had ordered a retrial in the $
17 million embezzlement case dropping the only remaining
charge against him. The court had also overturned the
convictions of his two sons, reportedly noting that legal
procedures had not been followed properly.

PoliticsWe Won’t Touch LG Funds, El-rufai Tells Stakeholders by mohince(op): 10:25pm On May 09, 2015
Kaduna State Governor-elect, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai,
yesterday said the in-coming administration will not touch
funds belonging to the 23 local government areas of the
state.
He said the local government areas will be allowed to run
the affairs of their councils without any form of interference.
The governor-elect stated this when the forum of APC local
government chairmen in the state paid him a congratulatory
visit.
According to him, “We must do what our people want and
what will benefit them. And we must be firm in bringing
positive change and coherent development in Kaduna state.
“We will not touch a kobo or naira of local government
councils in the state. The local government areas must be
allowed to deliver development and real change.
“They must go and work; development is practical and not
invisible. We will not tolerate waste and mismanagement of
public resources. We will also not tolerate incompetence
from officials charged with promoting the well-being of our
state.” He said.
However, Alhaji Naibi Ibrahim Sambo, who led the
delegation of APC chairmen, said they were in Kaduna to
congratulate the governor-elect and pray for his success as
governor.
Sambo explained that the people of Kaduna State voted for
El-Rufai because they are convinced he will take the state to
greater heights. He pledged the support of the forum
towards restoring the lost glory of the state.
Sambo said the APC chairmen are delighted that the state is
now in safe hands with El-Rufai as governor, considering his
track record of transparency and accountability in public
service.

PoliticsBuhari’s Inauguration: Obama May Send Michelle Or Biden by mohince(op): 2:08pm On May 07, 2015
If feelers from Washington are anything to go by, the
inauguration of General Muhammadu Buhari as the fourth
president in the Fourth Republic on May 29 will have either
the American first lady, Michelle Obama or the United States
vice president, Joe Biden in attendance.
The two names are said to be on the mind of President
Barack Obama who would not be physically present in Abuja
for the change of guard.
Also being considered is the US secretary of state, John
Kerry, as the head of the US presidential delegation to the
inauguration.
Empowered Newswire, monitored in Abuja said the three
names are already being mentioned in official U.S. and
diplomatic circles.
Nigeria’s ambassador to the US, Prof. Ade Adefuye,
reportedly said, “I have been told that there would be an
unusually large American delegation that will attend the
presidential inauguration on May 29”.
He confirmed to journalists yesterday that he has also been
told that a very senior member of the U.S. government is
expected to lead the delegation, but that there was no
confirmation yet.
The Nigerian ambassador said he has been in consultations
with the U.S. State Department on the matter, adding that
President Goodluck Jonathan has already extended an
invitation to the U.S. government.
“We are following up with the US government to ensure a
very large US presence at the inauguration,” the
ambassador said Tuesday in Washington DC.
Adefuye explained that “Nigeria’s profile has been on the
rise since after the election, with the concession by
Jonathan, and the smooth transition that is going on”.
The US Congress also plans to send some of the senior
members of the Legislative chamber to attend the event.
The Congress may be led by the chairman of the US House
of Representatives Sub Committee on Africa, Congressman
Chris Smith.
It is the usual practice that the U.S. president announces a
delegation to the presidential inaugurations of friendly
nations being led by the ambassador in that country.
But in rare occasions, he picks very senior public officials as
the head of delegation when he wants to emphasise a point
of how the US highly regards the country or the
circumstances at a given point in time.
From the U.S. government to the business sector and think
tanks, the level of excitement about the anticipated peaceful
transfer of power in Nigeria and the outcome of the
elections itself producing the Buhari-Osinbajo ticket from an
opposition party, APC, has been quite widespread.
Some of the U.S. groups that have been showing keen
interest to attend the inauguration and pressuring the U.S.
government to send a very high-powered delegation are the
Atlantic Council, and the Constituency for Africa-groups
known to be very influential in Washington DC.
A U.S. State Department source noted that after the
elections, feelers were sent out to business groups and
think tanks on interests in attending the Nigerian
inauguration, and the “feedback has been very
encouraging”.
Nigeria’s general elections have been receiving plaudits
from US lately.
The US consul-general, Jeffrey Hawkins, on Tuesday
commended the media for their remarkable role in ensuring
prompt information dissemination that aided the peaceful
conduct of the polls.
“The world has indeed watched Nigeria’s successes; and
for me, experiencing the historic elections first hand has
been a highlight of my career as a diplomat,” Mr. Hawkins
said at an event to mark the 2015 World Press Freedom Day
organised by the US Consulate in Lagos.
“I would like to commend the efforts of the news media in
offering a platform for the expression and amplification of
ideas by political candidates during the campaign season.
The news media, like their peers in other parts of the world,
shouldered a heavy responsibility to inform and educate the
electorate, and in some cases placing themselves in harm’s
way.
“By providing to the Nigerian electorate timely, factual,
analytical, and objective information to help them
understand the issues and where the candidates stand, the
news media lived up to a universal professional standard
and contributed immensely to a healthy and functioning
democracy in Nigeria”.

PoliticsSmokers Risk Three-month Jail In Ekiti by mohince(op): 1:42pm On May 07, 2015
ANYONE who smokes in public in Ekiti State now risks going
to jail for three months.
This followed the inauguration of the Smoke-Free Law
Enforcement Committee.
The Committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary,
Ministry of Environment, Dr. Bolanle Fakunle, was
inaugurated yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
The Anti-Smoking Enforcement Panel was to give legal
backing to the Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Law
passed by the House of Assembly on September 26, 2012.
It was signed by former Governor Kayode Fayemi on
December 31 of the same year.
Security agencies, such as the police, civil defence corps,
environmental health officers, have been empowered by law
to arrest culprits and ensure their prosecution.
The advocacy was driven by a non-governmental
organisation, the New Initiative for Social Development.
Delivering his address, the Executive Director of NISD,
Abiodun Oyeleye, said the tobacco epidemic has adverse
impact on public health of developing countries, including
Nigeria.
Oyeleye said awareness has been created among various
stakeholders, such as religious and political leaders,
hoteliers, drivers’ unions, youths, women, senior
government officials, ministries, departments and agencies.
Punishment for contravention of the law is found in Section
6. Any person who contravenes any of the provision of the
law other than Section 3 shall be liable on conviction to a
fine of N10,000 or to an imprisonment for a term not
exceeding three months or both.
A fine of N25,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding
six months or both awaits any offender who contravenes
any of the provision of Section 3 of the law.
The law further prescribes a punishment of N250,000 for the
violation of sub-section (1) or (2) stated above, if it be a
corporate offender.
Dr. Fakunle said the move was not targeted at smokers but
to prevent smoking in public places to safeguard public
health and protect non-smokers from inhaling cigarette
fumes.
Members of the Committee are Mr. Lawrence Ojo,
Permanent Secretary/Solicitor General, Ministry of Justice;
Mr. P.A. Bankole of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence
Corps, Mr. M.T.Olowolafe, president of the Environmental
Task Force in all the 16 Local Government Areas and Mrs.

PoliticsRead How Patience Jonathan Took Over The PDP Before The Elections by mohince(op): 5:12pm On May 06, 2015
A former police commissioner in Lagos State, Alhaji
Abubakar Tsav has accused the First Lady, Dame Patience
Jonathan of costing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
victory in the just concluded presidential election.
Tsav said the First Lady took over the party and was
breeding violence with her choice of words and practically
insulting the Northerners and the former head of state
during the campaign period. He also said Fani-Kayode and
Fayose got involved in the hate campaign while the
opposition parties were more focused.

Buhari
He told Western Post Nigeria, “When the PDP was formed
with pomp and pageantry some years back, its members
boasted that it was the largest party in Africa. Some at a point
boasted that it would rule for 60 years and beyond. Things went
right, and everything flourished in the party. Everybody went for
the umbrella but today, the situation has changed and the
umbrella is leaking profusely not only from torrential rain but
from the rays of the tropical sun.
“Most of the founding fathers have left the party in anger
ranging from lack of internal democracy to encouraging
illegality. The situation was worsened by the departure of former
President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is an institution himself.
“The party was taken over by Mrs Jonathan, Gov. Fayose, Mr
Femi Fani-Kayode among others. Imagine the First Lady inciting
people to be violent during the campaigns. She also brazenly
insulted the people of the North and a former Head of State
without due regard to the party chairman, who is from the
North. Fayose and Fani-Kayode also engaged in the hate
campaign against the opposition. The opposition was focused
and never left the substance to pursue the shadow.”
Tsav, recently insisted that Nigerians won’t miss Jonathan
when he leaves office. His comment was as a result of
Jonathan’s recent statement that Nigerians will truly
appreciate his achievement when he leaves.

In a related development, Bayelsa state publicity secretary
of the PDP, Osom Makbere, has said the divisions in the
PDP fold and the overbearing attitude of Mrs.Jonathan had
an influence on the president’s loss in the just concluded
polls.
