The only safe road linking Maiduguri, the Borno state
capital to the rest of the country; Maiduguri-Damaturu
highway was ambushed by the Boko Haram terrorist for the
fourth time in a week, as security operatives battle to
prevent Eidel Fitri holiday travelers from driving into the
trap.
According to Premium Times, villagers claimed that 15
persons were killed on Tuesday night in an ambush.
This comes barely 48 hours after they attacked Mainok
town in Borno state, where 30 persons died from the attack
and most part of the village was burnt. Boko Haram
terrorists on Wednesday, July 14, returned to attack the
villagers again.
Warsala village located on the boundary between Borno and
Yobe states, in North-East Nigeria was attacked on Tuesday
night. It is just one of many communities along the Kano-
Maiduguri highway,attacked by insurgents in the past week
including Ngamdu; not more than 5km away, Mainok, a
village located along the same highway and about 40km
away from Warsala.
A government worker named Hamza Baba, travelling the
route said he drove through a village practically deserted
Baba told Premium Times via WhatsApp: “The trucks were
attacked and burnt by Boko Haram terrorists who shot their
driver.
“A villager, who had luggage on his head and standing by the
road side to catch a vehicle to Damaturu, informed me that the
attack took place at about 8pm when the gunmen arrived
Warsala shooting sporadically. He said eight persons were
found dead this morning and that he had to flee because the
gunmen said they would still be back.
“Another trailer conveying commodities to Maiduguri was
attacked, and the driver killed early this morning in Ngamdu
village about 2 kilometres away from Warsala, which is a village under Yobe state.
“This has forced the village to start fleeing their homes en mass this morning. I saw more than 3000 of them leaving; many were trekking, some were conveyed in trucks. The Damaturu- Maiduguri highway is becoming a dead zone; this is the fourth attack this week from Monday. I wonder why intensive patrol measures is not being launched to stop this.”
On Monday, reports from the attacked town of Mainok in
Kaga local government areas of Borno state, indicated that
at least 30 persons were killed, and many others injured by
rampaging Boko Haram terrorists, security sources said.
Though soldiers have been deployed to Benisheik town,
85km from Maiduguri, to specifically guard the only bridge
along the highway, residents have said the only relatively
safe route might be taken over by the terrorists.
Yahaya Garba, a Maiduguri-based automobile mechanic
said: “If that happens, we are doomed in Maiduguri, because
that is the only surviving road that thousands of travellers ply
daily.” Meanwhile, leader of the Muslims in Nigeria, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III has said the Boko Haram sect was out to
destroy Islam in the country.
Abubakar, who is also the Sultan of Sokoto and president
general, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs
(NSCIA) made this known on Monday night, July 13, during
a Ramadan dinner he hosted for members of the Nigeria
Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto state chapter.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Prof Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, has signed 40, 000 certificates since assuming office on June 3, 2014. According to very reliable sources, Prof Njodi inherited the backlog of unsigned certificates from his predecessors. One of the sources said, “The backlog stretches as far back as one decade”. The source added that the unsigned certificates left many graduates stranded in the crowded labour market. He said he knew of some of them who expressed great disappointment with the situation because they could not tender their original certificates when they went for job interviews. “It was a pathetic situation until Prof Njodi came to office”, added the source who asked not to be mentioned because he was not the university’s official spokesperson. Another highly placed source, an academic staff, who sought amonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter told our correspondent that Prof Njodi has also unified the university’s academic calendar which, had been chaotic for many years. He said “and the man still has time to develop the infrastructure at UNIMAID Do you know thatbefore the arrival of Prof Njodi as VC, our graduates could not collect their hard-earned certificates even after many years of graduation? But Njodi has reversed all that rot. He has signed so many certificates: I know, because some of my former students visited me after collecting their precious certificates”, He also said that he would be happy if Prof Njodi continued in the spirit with which he is advancing the course of the university in spite of the gave situation of insecurity. According to a source within the presidency, the retired gap
tooth general “secretly returned the money this weekend to
the nations coffers”.
Though our source could not elaborate on the details
surrounding the sudden action of the retired Minna general.
Daily Onus recalled that a Federal High Court in Abuja has
dismissed the suit filed by civil society groups against the
Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and the Central
Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
The presiding judge, Gabriel Kolawole, delivered the ruling
on Thursday November 29 2012 in Abuja. The judge averred
that the applicants lack the locus standi to institute the
case.
Mr. Kolawole however said the plaintiffs should not be seen
as busy bodies but patriotic citizens.
Six civil society groups, including the Socio-Economic and
Accountability Project (SERAP), sued the Attorney- General
of the Federation (AGF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN) over the much publicised $12.4 billion oil windfall,
which the country recorded between 1988 and 1992, while
former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, was in power.
The groups wanted the court to compel the government to
release a report of a probe panel headed by Pius Okigbo
which probed the spending of the money by the
government.
The Federal Government raised many arguments against the
suit including: that the report was missing, only the AGF
could demand for such a report, and the court had no
jurisdiction to entertain the suit.
Former president Olusegun Obasanjo was reported to have
returned $200 millions
to the federation account, If Babangida’s case is finally
confirmed he will be the second ex-president to have
returned looted money back to Nigeria.

In-coming Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has told officials he is ready to accept the same five million Naira (more than $21,000) a month salary his predecessor, Stephen Keshi, earned. Definitely the issue of National Identity Card is one that
Nigerians have almost given up on seeing the light of day
due to many setbacks that has trailed it over the years.
So when the National Identity Management Commission
(NIMC),the issuing authority for National Identity, directed
that all transactions involving the identification of
individuals must be done with the National Identification
Number (NIN) beginning from September this year, people
are skeptical.
The commission has therefore urged on all Nigerians to
avail themselves the opportunity of enrolment into the
National Identity Database andbe issued a National Identity
Number (NIN), which is the single version of truth and the
foundation of identity.
Pursuant to Section 27 (1) and (2) of the NIMC Act, 2007,the
commission said these transactions include: application for,
and issuance of an international passport; opening of
individual and/group bank accounts, all consumer credits;
purchase of insurance policies; the purchase, transfer and
registration of land by any individual; National Health
Insurance Scheme; such transactions that have social
security implications, registration of voters, payment of
taxes, pension and so on.
The commission’s General Manager, Inspectorate,
Regulatory and Compliance Services, Mrs Hadiza Dagabana
said, “Any government agency/institution, bank, insurance
company and all other institutions offering services and /or
involved in transactions requiring the identity of an
individual must first demand for NIN. Any individual,
institutions/body who fails to comply with the above has
committed an offence punishable under Section 28 of the
NIMC Act.”
For many Nigerians National Identity Card or Number has
become a bottomless pit to inspire enthusiasm and probably
nationalism. This was a project that started in 1978 under
the military regime of Olusegun Obasanjo. But almost forty
years later, we are still at it, when we should have perfected
it to an art form.
The idea is if people had it, then there is no need for other
schemes purportedly for similar use as the management of
security.
However, the duplication of such scheme are too many for
Nigerians, always singing the same song of storing
information in ‘database’, which should be enough with only
one or two of them.
If the government knew of this why should Nigerians be
subjected to things like voters cards, telecommunications
registration, the current Bank Verification Number BVN,
including the driver’s licenses that are all said to aid
security.
One would have thought with all those details in storage, the
agencies would liaise instead of perpetually subjecting
Nigerians to one form of registration to another.
It is instructive to ask that before issuing the deadline how
many people have got their Identity Numbers?
The deadline is unrealistic without taking a lot of things into
consideration. For instance, where are their facilities that
would make it easier for people to go and register, what
about the level of awareness among people on the street?
The enlightenment by NIMC is by no means aggressive,
certainly nowhere as aggressive as the current Bank
Verification Number and the recent voter registration by
Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.
The National Identity Management Commission should have
done more, knowing how Nigerians have lost faith with the
so-called National Identity Card scheme, to win people by
encouraging them.
Therefore the commission should not threaten people as if
all along it is the fault of the citizens that the scheme has
failed again and again.
The deadline should be extended, with the commission re-
strategising on how to encourage people to go and register.
The compliance must reach a certain level before the
commission can issue deadlines.
In the interim the National Identity Card can still be in use in
some cases as it is presently.
We quite understand the significance of National Identity
where many loopholes can be blocked, such as those with
multiple employment, ghost workers and other forms of
criminality.
It is our hope that when this gigantic project is finally
working as it should, judging by the money being sunk into it
since inception, it can be that elusive ‘database’ that other
agencies and institutions can go to for such information.
Because if after that, people are still asked to register for
another round of new scheme, it would be judged to have
failed.

Recently in Nnewi, I was in a commercial bus and the
conductor was exchanging words with a passenger who had
complained that the bus was over speeding. The angry
passenger warned the driver that her family would not spare
him if she gets injured. In response, the conductor started
barking at the young lady and warned her never to expect
any help from the zoo legal institutions. Curious, I asked the
conductor what he meant by ‘zoo institutions’ and he
advised me to tune in to Radio Biafra 102.1 FM at night.
Before then, I had heard about the pirate radio station but
didn’t know it has commenced transmission on the
frequency modulated band. That night, I decided to tune in
to the station, and immediately I hit the frequency, I heard
the presenter, who addresses himself as Nnamdi Kanu
(also, Director), shouting on a caller for addressing Buhari
as Nigeria’s president. “Stupid black monkey and baboon,
will you end this call if you don’t recognise Buhari as a
pedophile, a child rapist and terrorist president of the zoo.”
Instantly I recalled my conversation with the bus conductor
and understood that the zoo he was talking about is Nigeria,
an evil slang he must have picked up from the pirate station
presenter, Nnamdi Kanu.
Another thing I observed on that first day of listening to the
station was the overwhelming quantity of falsehoods it
propagates. Some of the falsehoods include the continuous
aerial bombing of Igbos in Calabar by forces of the Nigerian
government and the ordering of joint security forces in Chad
to kill Igbos by President Muhammadu Buhari, after his visit
to the country.
Subsequent listening to the station revealed it as having
agents who regularly call during its live interactive
programmes to disseminate false stories. It is really sad
that some misinformed people take the falsehoods of the
pirate radio station seriously. The recent protest of market
men and women in Onitsha over the alleged transfer of
Boko Haram prisoners to Anambra State was catalysed by a
broadcast of the pirate station a day before the protest, in
which it alleged that President Buhari has ordered the
massive transfer of detained Boko Haram fighters to
Anambra State to kill many Igbos.
The alarming thing about Radio Biafra is that it is fast
gathering the support of less educated Igbos, such as
commercial motorcyclists, bus drivers and conductors, as
well as local market men and women, who can be easily
deceived by the station’s falsehoods. If the station is not
urgently checked it can endanger the peace and security of
Igbo land and Nigeria in general.
Igbos should note that the greatest enemy they have now is
Nnamdi Kanu, who stays far away in well secured London,
and delights in inciting his people towards bloodshed,
against their fellow compatriots, and the Nigerian state. No
sane individual can afford to promote hatred between his
brothers and other compatriots in the fundamentally
interlinked global village that we live in today. Also, anyone
who means well for his brothers and sisters cannot afford to
activate violence and bloodshed in his homeland, which if
allowed will definitely lead to the massive loss of lives and
property. It also baffles me how a person who claims to
love his brothers and sisters will come on air and make
careless statements that can lead to the destruction of the
businesses and livelihoods, shops and property of Igbos
outside Igboland. Is he on drugs or insane?
It is no longer news that Igbos are mostly international
business men and women, so a person like Nnamdi Kanu
and Radio Biafra advocating for the destruction of Igbo
property abroad and the relocation of all Igbos to Igbo land
in this era of a global village must be confused. If Nnamdi
Kanu believes that no one can make it and prosper outside
Igbo land, what is he doing in London? Why can’t he come
back to his home state, Abia to ‘progress’? It is unfortunate
that some misinformed Igbos are even donating money to
him. What a fraud! It is quite clear that the fraudster is fast
exploiting misinformed fellows to his benefit. It is even
funny that he has disowned all Igbo socio-cultural
organisations and appointed himself commander-in-chief.
The manner at which he abuses fellow Igbos and blacks,
who he regularly calls “black monkeys and baboons”, show
that he is nothing other than a racist; if other leaders abuse
their followers in such manner, then what sort of leadership
will that be?
The federal government and the international community
should note that the pirate Radio Biafra is a pending
disaster and if urgent measures are not taken to end its
activities, it can metamorphose into the media wing of a
terrorising group sharing an ideology of hatred and
bloodshed with the Islamic State (IS).
Igbos should note that Nigeria has come to stay, so instead
of wasting their time and energy in a wild goose dream of
secession, they should support other nationalities and
groups in building a stronger, more united and better
Nigeria. The federal government and the international
community should also make necessary efforts to track
down, arrest and prosecute the director of the pirate radio
station, Nnamdi Kanu, for inciting violence, bloodshed and
attempting a crime against humanity.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Mai Deribe has come under fire by those who have accused him of being one of the oligarchs of Nigeria. They accuse him of using his unfettered access to the corridors of power to promote his business concerns, corner contracts and oil blocs for himself and make outrageous profits only to sprinkle crumbs on bedazzled masses who saw him as an angel sent from the very chambers of heaven. Many, especially his teeming supporters from his native Borno State, do not agree with this submission. His critics pointed out that many of the projects he carried out were based on contractual agreements, purely business matters which he profited from, and should not be flaunted as his personal works or any outstanding works of charity. HIS DEATH Death came visiting the grand old Nigerian billionaire while he was faraway in Saudi Arabia. He died on the 13 th March, 2002 at the age of 78. The next day, his body was prayed upon at the Al-Masjid al Haram (also called the Grand Mosque or the Sacred Mosque, the largest mosque on earth) . Thereafter, he was buried at an unmarked grave next to the Grand Mosque. Many Muslims believe there is no better way to die than to have the last breath within the proximity of the Kaaba as it is believed it is a ticket that facilitates one’s entry to Paradise. INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT MAI DERIBE -The late Mai Deribe’s influence was not limited to Borno State alone but also to the neighbouring Yobe State. Borno and Yobe States are the only Kanuri-majority states in Nigeria. The late General Sani Abacha was from Bornu State while his Chief Security Officer, Major Hamza al-Mustapha hails from Yobe State. -In 2001, there was a dispute involving Dublin-based Tuskar Resources and Mai Deribe’s Cavendish Petroleum over an oil field. -Mai Deribe took his religious injunctions seriously and was said to not miss any of the Umrah and Hajj (lesser and major pilgrimage of the Muslims). In the 1970s, the Saudi government embarked on an expansion of the Holy Mosque in Mecca and they had to pay off the owners of the adjoining buildings that had to be demolished in order to make way for the expansion. Mai Deribe refused any form of payment for his own house, saying he donated it in God’s cause since it was for the expansion of the Holy Mosque. -He was also said to visit his mother while she was alive three times in a day. The first time was after the morning prayers, then later at 1pm and then 6pm. -The late Mai Deribe is one of the most important figures in the life of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Atiku met Mai Deribe in 1974 when he accompanied his friend Mohammed Indimi to Borno State for his wedding. The two met and the rest is history. Mai Deribe was said to have treated Atiku like his own son. -In 1969, there was a legal tussle between Mai Deribe and Alhaji Usman Ali/Borno Holding Company Limited, another wealthy Borno businessman. The two later made up. -One of Mai Deribe’s sons married the daughter of former presidential aspirant and MKO’s running mate, Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe. -Mai Deribe was also friends with former President Obasanjo. In her book, Bitter-Sweet: My Life with Obasanjo, Obasanjo’s former wife, Oluremi wrote: It was not surprising that Hassan Usman had arranged with Alhaji Mai Deribe to receive us on our arrival at Maiduguri. We flew in an Air Force helicopter to Maiduguri and Mai Deribe came to the airport in a Mercedes Benz car to receive us. -The furniture for Mai Deribe’s house was done by the world-renowned Giovanni Monzio Compagnoni (GMC) of Italy. This interior décor company is known for decorating the homes of people like the late President Omar Bongo of Gabon, the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman, Sheikh Khalifa Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates and the Central Bank of Kuwait. -Mai Deribe also purchased a special bed, once owned by the late King Hassan II of Morocco. -Although many Nigerians are familiar with the Mai Deribe Palace in Maiduguri, he also built another palace in Dakar, Senegal. ROMANCING THE LORDS OF POWER -THE DAYS OF POLITICS The late Alhaji Mai Deribe was the Treasurer of the National Party of Nigeria (Borno State Branch) under the Presidency of Shehu Shagari in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Using his convoluted political connections and wide- reaching influence, Mai Deribe prevailed on the Nigerian Federal Government in the 1980s to site one of the four international airports in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The contract to build the airport was awarded to him in 1981 after he had also constructed the Brigadier Maimalari Barracks along Monguno Road, lecture theatres at the University of Maiduguri (alongside the Ramat Library, Science and Social Science Complex with the Agricultural Department Building/AgroVet Building commissioned by Babangida, see photos below), Maiduguri Main General Hospital Building near the Post Office, public buildings and secretariats in Yobe State all as part of contractual agreements with his companies. When Yobe State was carved out of Borno State on the 27 th of August 1991, Mai Deribe prevailed upon his good friend and military president, General Ibrahim Babangida to shift the capital city to Damaturu. Babangida also commissioned the Gidan Deribe in 1991 upon its completion. It was said to be the most expensive house in Africa. Alhaji Mai Deribe was one of those who assisted the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar to the limelight. In fact, one of Atiku’s children, Ahmed (a twin, the other boy is named Shehu, named after Shehu Musa Yar’adua), was named after Mai Deribe. He rendered immense assistance to Atiku while he was in the customs and when he also entered politics. When it was time to swear Atiku in as the Vice President of Nigeria in 1999, he said that he would not regard himself as an orphan (he had lost his two parents) as long as Mai Deribe was present at the swearing-in ceremony. Aliko Dangote’s uncle, Alhaji Aminu Dantata was also best friends with the late Mai Deribe. THE ABACHA CONNECTION In 1996, the military junta of General Sani Abacha gave approvals for various crude oil applications. One of the beneficiaries of the one-in-a-lifetime opportunity was Alhaji Mai Deribe, the owner of Cavendish Petroleum in control of the Oil Mining Lease (OML 110). OBE4 and OBE 5 are two well-known oil wells owned by Cavendish Petroleum. Estimates indicate that the Mai Deribe family earns more money in a year than the entire Borno State. While he was alive, Mai Deribe was actually the richest man in Borno State.

The day was the 15 th of March, 1990. Nigeria was to play
host to some of the most important personalities on earth.
Guess who? Diana, the Princess of Wales was in town, with
her husband, Prince Charles on a state visit. Princess Diana
charmed everyone with her magical aura. At the lepers’
colony, she almost made many shed tears as she held the
hands of lepers, stroking their hands and looking at where
they lost their fingers. The military president, General
Ibrahim Babangida was ecstatic and wanted to ensure that
the guests got the finest treatment possible. Thus, the
Nigerian government made spectacular arrangements to
make them comfortable. The search was on for a befitting
place for them to stay.
BIRTH AND EARLY DAYS
Born into the Mai Deribe family, Alhaji Ahmed Mai Deribe’s
father was one of the prominent long-distance traders of
colonial Borno.
MAKING MONEY
Although Mai Deribe’s name is etched in the minds of many
Nigerians as one of the few lucky and controversial owners
of crude oil wells in Nigeria, he also had his hands in some
other pies:
-Mai Deribe established the Dalaram Soft Drinks Factory, the
first of its type in northeastern Nigeria and it was
commissioned by President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari in
1982 alongside the Deribe Hotel. The factory had the
capacity for one million bottles per day.
-Mai Deribe also established the first (said to still be the
only) five-star hotel in northeastern Nigeria, the Deribe
Hotel. -Mai Deribe was a major shareholder in the Preussag
Drilling Company. Today, the state governments of Borno,
Adamawa, Yobe, Kano, Gombe and Bauchi are making use
of the services of this company to access their aquifers and
other underground water basins.
MAI DERIBE THE PHILANTHROPIST
Mai Deribe was known and is still revered by the people of
Borno for his charitable activities while alive. He pumped
money into various ends, and these include:
-Construction of the Deribe Central Mosque, Old Maiduguri,
Jere Local Government, Borno. It was commissioned by
General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
-In the early 1980s, Mai Deribe upon returning from
overseas (most probably the US or the UK) came with gifts
of ultramodern gadgets and equipment for the staff of NTA
Maiduguri. NTA is the Nigerian Television Authority. The
gadgets were so advanced that it took the staff two years to
master it, even after inviting their seniors from NTA Channel
2, Victoria Island, Lagos.
-On the 1 st of January, 1987, Mai Deribe gave a sum of
N5million naira to the Maiduguri Central Mosque on behalf
of his family and that of his brother, late Alhaji Kuli Deribe.
-His neighbours were the people of Fezzan and Old
Maiduguri, and they also benefitted from his largesse, he
sent money and food to them, one bag of millet per family
every month of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of
fasting.
-Construction of the Bulumkutu Central Mosque, Borno, the
Aminu Deribe Mosque, the Doggon Masalanchi in the
Fezzan Ward of Maiduguri, Deribe Hotel Mosque, School
Mosque, Government College, Maiduguri and Fillin Polo
Mosque, Airport Mosque. This is in addition to 27 smaller
mosques all across the country. In total, he erected 78
mosques.
-Deribe Arabic and Islamic Schools.
-For 44 years, Mai Deribe sponsored people to the hajj, the
Muslim holy pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Atimes, he
would ferry the pilgrims in his own Gulfstream private jet.
-Deribe Hospital along Bulumkutu Road. It was
commissioned by Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, the-then
Chief of General Staff, the second-in-command to General
Babangida.
-Construction of the Baga Road Central Market and
Shopping Complex.
-In the mid-1980s, Alhaji Mai Deribe dropped the sum of $
1million for oil prospectors looking for crude oil deposits in
the Gajiganna and Kukawa areas of Bornu State. Some
geophysicists believe that there is a considerable quantity
of oil in the Nigerian part of the Chad Basin and that is quite
feasible as the Chadians have already started drilling oil in
their own part of the basin. In a recent NTA programme
hosted by the suave Cyril Stober, Governor Kashim Shettima
said the Federal Government of Nigeria is the one stalling
progress on the exploration of crude oil in the Chad Basin.
-Mai Deribe’s company, Preussag Drilling Company, built
and donated more than 60 boreholes in rural districts across
Borno and Yobe State.
-Mai Deribe sponsored numerous indigent students from
Borno State to study abroad, giving them scholarships to
England where some of them stayed at his palatial
residence in Gloucester, London.
-Mai Deribe was regarded as a patriarch for the people of
Borno State and that explains why his people ran into his
open arms at various occasions. During the devastating
flood disaster in September 1994, thousands of displaced
residents camped at his house where they were catered to.
Although he was not in the country when the flood
happened, he sent a sum of one million naira (about $
375,000) to the Borno State government to assist them with
the relief efforts to purchase food items, shelter materials
and other accessories for them. A similar scenario would be
re-enacted in July 2009 during the unrest in Maiduguri.
HIS FABULOUS WEALTH
-That Deribe was extremely wealthy is a fact and even more
factual is his action of dazzling others with his luxurious
wealth. And many other Nigerians remember him more for
the trappings of his wealth. In the 1980s, he was one of the
very few people on earth who were cruising around in the
newly-released Gulfstream G550 private jet. It is believed
that he was among the first 12 people to purchase the
customized version of this jet in the early 1980s, putting
him in the same league with Yoshiaki Tsutsumi of Japan
who was the richest man in the world at that time and other
billionaires like Khalid Ibn Mahfouz of Saudi Arabia and
Robert Edward ‘Ted’ Turner, the owner of CNN.
-There is also the Deribe Palace (Gidan Deribe) in Maiduguri,
the state capital. Sprawling and vast, the building’s majesty
was enough to impress the late Princess Diana and her
husband, Prince Charles, King Juan Carlos I of Spain who
stayed in the palace for two days in 1986 (the Spanish king
was said to have been amazed with such opulence right in
the middle of a vast desert) and even a son of an American
President (George Bush would later become the US
President himself), all of whom were hosted in the gold-
marble building which was so exquisite that its
commissioning was done by military president, General
Ibrahim Babangida. IBB was also a guest at the palace,
while another high-profile guest is a retired army general,
Muhammad Saad Abubakar, now the Sultan of Sokoto.
Many Nigerians were flabbergasted at the majesty of the
Deribe Palace when Ovation magazine did a feature on the
man and his wealth in early 2000. How much did the palace
cost him? Just $100 million. And cleaning his house was
said to have cost N5million per month. This is what Dele

Worried by the increasing rate of ‘Kalare’ activities in the
state, Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe
State has urged parents and guardians to warn their
children and wards to desist from engaging in criminal
activities in the state.
He said his administration will not allow anybody, no matter
how highly placed, to destroy the peace of the state as
anyone arrested and found to be connected to such criminal
activities will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Dankwambo further called on the people of the state to
report criminals to security agents.
The governor gave the warning at a reception organised for
the winners of the just concluded National Qur’anic
Recitation competition held in Auchi, Edo State.
He also challenged both Islamic and Christian scholars to
ensure that the society lives by what they preached, adding,
“our major challenge in the state now is the return of Kalare
activities. I want to call on the good people of Gombe not to
rely on government to come in before they take action.
“People should not hesitate to report to the security agents
anywhere they see them carrying out their nefarious
activities. I am calling on our people to wake up from their
sleep to help government arrest the situation,” he said.
He said his administration will do everything possible to
ensure that kalare activities are nipped in the bud.
Dankwambo urged parents to strongly warn their children to
steer clear of kalare, as his administration will not relent in
their efforts to ensure a crime free society.
Recently, Gombe State Police Command arrested nine
suspects over alleged culpable homicide cases. They were
allegedly involved in the killing of one photographer,
Mohammed Bunu, along Idi Quarters in Gombe metropolis.
Kalare members who are mostly between the ages of 16
and 20 have recently resurfaced in Gombe terrorizing,
killing, snatching people’s bags and breaking houses both in
the day time and at night.

A ray of hope has emerged that the whereabouts of the
abducted Chibok school girls may soon be known. This
follows the arrest of a business man, Babuji Ya'ari who
allegedly played an active role in the abduction of the over
300 Chibok schoolgirls last year. According to Maj. Gen.
Chris Olukolade, Ya'ari headed a "terrorists' intelligence
cell" for the Islamic extremists group that carried out the
abduction while masquerading as a member of the self-
defense Youth Vigilante Group. His arrest has led to the
arrest of several other members of the terrorists'
intelligence cell some of who are women.
Ya’ari is also alleged to have masterminded the May 2014
assassination of the emir of Gwoza as well as several
deadly attacks on the northeastern city of Maiduguri.

arrests were made or how many people were arrested.

The recent bold decision by President Muhammadu Buhari
to entrust his personal security to the hands of the military
has taken many by surprise.
The former security consultant and former director of the
Department of Security Service, Mike Ejiofor gave an
interview to Vanguard and said that the president is risking
his life trying to settle personal scores.
He also said that Buhari is risking the national security and
the security of the president with his recent order. Excerpts
Do you think the army has the capacity to provide close
body guard protection for the president?
It is a laughable question because, on one hand, the president is directing that the military check points be withdrawn to
perform their military duty. How can you now entrust the life of the president to the military when there are people who are
statutorily charged with the responsibility? Whether the ADC
was given the directive, he doesn’t have the authority and
capacity and I stand to be challenged. It cannot come from the ADC. If government has been constituted, such matter should either come from the NSA or the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The Department of Security Service is charged with the
protection of the president, the vice president, the Senate
president, the governors, deputy governors, speaker of the
House of Representatives and state lawmakers and their
families. The president’s security should not be toyed with. I believe that what is going on now is people who are trying to settle personal scores. Instead of looking at national security, they want to settle
personal scores and, in the process, compromise national
security and the security of the president. I don’t believe it, but if it is true, it’s rather unfortunate because the military
personnel being drafted are not trained in body guard
protection. The DSS men are trained for VIP protection and the president falls under VIP.
What do you think is the way forward?
In the present circumstance, government has to issue a
statement because the statement from the Special Adviser to
the President on Media and Publicity did not deny or confirm
that the DSSS has been asked to leave the Villa. There must bea specific statement on whether they have been withdrawn or not. As we speak, we don’t know the true position and it is very dangerous to the security of the president.
A recent memo from the presidential palace revealed that
Buhari’s ADC had ordered the removal of all DSS operatives
from the inner regions of the palace, turning them into
celebrated gatemen.

Customers expecting the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend the deadline for the Bank Verification Number (BVN) exercise may be disappointed as CBN has ruled out the possibility.


Leadership reports that Ibrahim Mu’azu, director,corporate communications, CBN, confirmed that the deadline for registration is tomorrow, Tuesday, June 30, 2015.

He explained further that bank customers were given adequate time and that the bank expected they should have taken advantage of the period scheduled for the exercise to register.

Contrary to the speculation that customers who do not have BVN will be prevented from making transactions, such as payments and withdrawals, Mu’azu said only customers using remote access services: internet banking,Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and other on-line services would not be able to transact.

He also confirmed that over 14 million bank customers have already registered.

For Nigerians in diaspora to participate in the exercise, CBN has also directed banks to provide online platforms for those who have local accounts to register.

Barely a month after President Muhammadu Buhari became

Governor kashim Shaettima of Borno state has said his
state has started feeling the impact of the Muhammudu
Buhari led administration.

internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri the
governor said: “We have started feeling the impacts of
President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.”
There are 22 IDP camps established in the Borno state
capital. The governor broke his fast at the camp located at Yerwa Girls College in Maiduguri. He was in the company of the Emir of Bama, Alhaji Kyari Ibn Ibrahim Elkanemi who
became a displaced person after a Boko Haram attack on
Bama in 2014.
Shettima spoke after the ‘Iftar’ to the displaced persons in
English and Kanuri languages saying since Buhari’s
inauguration he has been working silently to fund activities
across the 22 IDPs camps in Maiduguri.
he said the norm under former president Goodluck Jonathan
was to leave states with the responsibility of taking care of
the welfare of the IDP camps and its inhabitants.

The governor also expressed his desire to rebuild his state
following months of destruction of buildings, offices, houses
and more by the Islamist sect.
He said: “As we continue to pray for the return of peace in this state, I urge all of you here today to exercise more patience and endurance of being displaced for many months from your destroyed homes and communities. We assure you that with
this relative peace, this administration will commence the
rebuilding and rehabilitation of all the destroyed communities
immediately after this Ramadan.
“The Shehu of Bama has just briefed me about the gradual
return of peace in his chiefdom to commence the rebuilding of the 90 per cent destroyed town. Even the water supply facilities which had been destroyed and poisoned by Boko Haram insurgents last September, are to be completely rebuilt by either sinking of new boreholes or dig cement wells to meet people’s water supply requirements for domestic and industrial uses.”
Shettima also said: “The priorities of the Borno State
Rehabilitation and Rebuilding Committees (BRRC) will be on the totally destroyed towns of Bama, Baga, Monguno, Gwoza,
Gambouru, Kukawa, Damasak and Mafa in central and north
parts of this state. Thereafter, the other affected villages and
communities adjourning these towns and council headquarters, will simultaneously follow, including villages and settlements on the foot of Mandara Mountains in Gwoza Local Government Area.” Borno state is one of many states in the country that has been affected by insurgency. However through months of intense battle, the Nigerian military has been able to kill most of the insurgents in the state.

Left to me, I prefer this type of slowliness to hastiness
