POULTRY FARMING: PAWPAW SEEDS CAN CURE POULTRY DISEASE

A section of EAST African poultry farmers are now using crushed pawpaw seeds to cure intestinal worms and the fatal Coccidiosis chicken disease responsible for over 50 percent of poultry deaths after a visit from a Togolese farmer where the practice has been perfected.

To cure worms, scientists gave chickens three grams of powdered papaya seeds for every kilogram of live weight. This dose was repeated for two days. Treating coccidioides requires a higher dose over a longer period of time. Chickens were cured with 3.5 grams of powdered papaya seeds for every kilogram of live weight, given for six consecutive days.

“It was a disaster no one would want to relive. I personally lost close to three quarters of my 300 chicken that I relied on for my income and that of my household. It is a tragedy that I have never recovered from even financially because I had invested a lot on it. But the pawpaw seeds discovery has not only assisted us with the medicine but inspired sale of pawpaws which is picking up well,”said Herve Komi a Togolese farmer.

Avian coccidiosis is the most costly and wide-spread parasitic disease in the poultry industry, and has been mainly controlled by the use of chemotherapeutic agents. But the disease is particularly hard to contain once there is an outbreak, because of the emergence of drug-resistant strains.

The farmers crush the seeds and either mix them with the poultry feed or water. “I give my chicken a dose twice a day, in the morning when am feeding them, and also mix it with water late afternoon.

Better morning All.

Coryza appears to be the order of the day in my farm too. I have lost a handful of birds to this menace. I don't have any scientific proofs for the cause, but I'm thinking it might be due to the still air around this time. The rains have stopped suddenly, and the air in the atmosphere has been still and very cold.

In addition, I dug up to understand that Coryza is an acute infectious bacterial disease. Hence, there is a need to separate the diseased fowl(s) from the healthy ones. It's just like isolating a sick person at the hospital, whilst the rest of the birds, though not sick, would be treated preventively against the disease.

I administered drugs, but in some cases, I lost some of them.

Never encountered this though
But I think isolating the sick birds is the first important thing to do
Then combine ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline
Little quantity in a spoon mixed with little water and give once a day for five days

And since I learnt about the power of neem leaves, I usually get plenty leaves, dry them then crumble it with my hands and mixed with the chicken feed for about a week in every month

It's been doing wonders
Goodluck to us all

Anytime your hens lay a lot of eggs and hatch just a few out of them you should not throw the rest out yet. Sir of the night be having embryos that are almost fully developed.

To know which ones are still good to be hatched, just pack all the eggs and put them in a bucket of water.

Let the bucket sit still first, then drop the eggs into the bucket like 3 at a time. Look closely at the eggs and watch them for 3 mins.

If there’s an active embryo in any of the eggs you will notice that particular egg ‘jerking’ or ‘shaking’ very softly (or violently depending on how advanced the embryo is)

Once you notice this, take out the live eggs and dry them off to be replaced under another brooding hen. Crack and fry the rest of the dead (un-fertilized) eggs.

Remember eggs are live breathing organisms so don’t leave them soaked in water for more than 5 mins or they will die

Ok thanks
But only one had a dead chick inside
The rest are bad, filled with stinking liquid

Please at what age do cockerel start mating?
Is it indoor or outdoor mating?cos I heard cockerel can't endure that marathon courtship race

Lastly, does size matters in mating? I want to make sure the cockerel are not overweight
Thank you

In textbooks, it is good to allow your cockerels reach 1 year before you use them to mate
But in real life one the cockerels start crowing from like 6 to 7 months, they ll start mating
Especially when they are free ranging
Me wey dey go work, Na im ho dey monitor when them go mate

Size matters sometimes
That's why they breed broiler breeders specially to a specified weight by not overfeeding them
But for local chickens and noilers
It's hard to overfeed
Most times they ll leave the food to waste sef unlike broilers, that can eat till eternity
And from textbooks too, they say 8 to 10 hens per cock is ok
I agree cos I only keep one cock for all my hens

Greetings,
Please how do you ensure fresh air circulation in the incubator?
Did you left the bigger carton opened or closed?

Also, how are the chicks from this incubator performing currently?

Thanks in anticipation for your response.

There should always be a small opening that serves as a ventilator, cut out a small opening at both sides of the carton to make the air circulate
And the carton should be closed

Thanks for asking, my chickens are doing great
I hv put them in the cage with the rest but they always seperate themselves from the rest
They are about 5 weeks and 3days
They looked bigger than the ones hatched a week before them
I think maybe its because they have a cockerel father

When my noilers start laying
I plan to build a larger incubator with 5v fan and experiment with that, still looking for a bigger carton that can take up to 50 eggs

Thanks for breaking the silence
What are you feeding them with if I may ask
Mine are free range. I feed them with kitchen waste
I'm dealing with cat or dog at night
So now I make sure they all sleep in the cage

I wonder why you have unhatched eggs. Check if the eggs are still fertile, if they are, add it to the nest of the laying ones

The eggs went bad, only had a dead chick
The previous gem laid 9 eggs and hatched 9 chicks

I buy grower feed for my chickens
They can't free range cos of the neighborhood

Farouq94:
Diseases and Prevention

Prevention is always better than cure. This cannot be overemphasized. Biosecurity is very important, especially when dealing with poultry. Make sure your feed is good, stored in a clean environment. Clean water, proper ventilation and a clean environment. Do not allow birds to continuously sleep in their litter. Always clean their cages regularly and wash their feeders/drinkers.

In the event that a disease outbreak occurs, nature has given us more than enough remedies to tackle them, depending on your location and availability. I have cured newcastle disease with just moringa leaf extract and aloe gel. The chicken couldn’t stand or feed, I didn’t take it will survive. I think most of us here have access to Neem and Aloe vera. These two are powerhouse that can be used to cure almost all most common poultry diseases.

Neem leaves and Aloe Vera are antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal, and also boost immunity of birds.

Preparation.
To make one litre of neem leaf extract, boil 1 litre of hot water, add to a container with 100gram of fresh neem leaves and leave for 24 hours. Strain and keep aside to cool.

Dose should be between 20ml-30ml per litre, and then you add 15ml per litre of Aloe Vera gel. Don’t add the aloe gel to the neem extract when its hot. For chicks you can administer for 3 days straight, serve clean water after they have finished it. And then be giving them maybe one or twice a month. Don’t overuse it.

Always store your natural medication in a cool place, and do not make large batches. To be on the safest side just make what you need to use for that week.

Very correct

Termites as an Alternative Protein Source

If you’re free-ranging your birds, you still need to make sure that they get the most nutritive feed nature has to offer. Black soldier fly larvae, termites, duckweed, the fauna that thrives in composts...etc. All these are nutritious protein sources that you can use to supplement the protein requirement of your local chickens, at a very cheap rate.

My first go-to would’ve been the BSF larvae, but because my location is not its natural habitat, growing them will require extra costs and attention, and I prefer a self-sustaining model with minimal input. So I’m going for termites. My chickens love them and we have their colonies in abundance.

This is what their larvae look like, their colonies are usually underground and getting a good pic of them is difficult as they do not like light.

Read a lot about black soldier flies too.
Do we have them here on Nigeria?
I hv actually experimented with house flies,
Was partially successful but need conscious efforts, space and rotten foods

can you please share how the kero incubator was made

Just an experiment oo
Not a standard incubator

I got a larger carton, put an indomie carton in it, cutting open one side.
I line the bottom of the indomie carton with a towel.
Put a lantern on the opposite side facing the side I cut opened
I placed the thermometer/hygrometer on the towel to measure the temp and humidity, that was like a day before placing the eggs
I had small water in a plactic placed beside the lantern
I regulated the lantern till I got the ideal temperature 100.5 but it fluctuates a lot even after been stable for a long time so putting an eye on it is a must
Turned eggs three time a day
Raised humidity to 60% on the 18th day, though it has always fluctuated between 48 and 52%
Ibhad a hard time raising it but I did it and to my surprise the eggs pipped on the 19th and hatched on the 20th

Will build a better one in the future by God's grace
I have forced air incubator in mind.
