POULTRY FARMING: PAWPAW SEEDS CAN CURE POULTRY DISEASE A section of EAST African poultry farmers are now using crushed pawpaw seeds to cure intestinal worms and the fatal Coccidiosis chicken disease responsible for over 50 percent of poultry deaths after a visit from a Togolese farmer where the practice has been perfected. To cure worms, scientists gave chickens three grams of powdered papaya seeds for every kilogram of live weight. This dose was repeated for two days. Treating coccidioides requires a higher dose over a longer period of time. Chickens were cured with 3.5 grams of powdered papaya seeds for every kilogram of live weight, given for six consecutive days. “It was a disaster no one would want to relive. I personally lost close to three quarters of my 300 chicken that I relied on for my income and that of my household. It is a tragedy that I have never recovered from even financially because I had invested a lot on it. But the pawpaw seeds discovery has not only assisted us with the medicine but inspired sale of pawpaws which is picking up well,”said Herve Komi a Togolese farmer. Avian coccidiosis is the most costly and wide-spread parasitic disease in the poultry industry, and has been mainly controlled by the use of chemotherapeutic agents. But the disease is particularly hard to contain once there is an outbreak, because of the emergence of drug-resistant strains. The farmers crush the seeds and either mix them with the poultry feed or water. “I give my chicken a dose twice a day, in the morning when am feeding them, and also mix it with water late afternoon. wisdomline: Never encountered this though But I think isolating the sick birds is the first important thing to do Then combine ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline Little quantity in a spoon mixed with little water and give once a day for five days And since I learnt about the power of neem leaves, I usually get plenty leaves, dry them then crumble it with my hands and mixed with the chicken feed for about a week in every month It's been doing wonders Goodluck to us all 1 Like |

Azarina: In textbooks, it is good to allow your cockerels reach 1 year before you use them to mate But in real life one the cockerels start crowing from like 6 to 7 months, they ll start mating Especially when they are free ranging Me wey dey go work, Na im ho dey monitor when them go mate Size matters sometimes That's why they breed broiler breeders specially to a specified weight by not overfeeding them But for local chickens and noilers It's hard to overfeed Most times they ll leave the food to waste sef unlike broilers, that can eat till eternity And from textbooks too, they say 8 to 10 hens per cock is ok I agree cos I only keep one cock for all my hens |

SoftHeart: There should always be a small opening that serves as a ventilator, cut out a small opening at both sides of the carton to make the air circulate And the carton should be closed Thanks for asking, my chickens are doing great I hv put them in the cage with the rest but they always seperate themselves from the rest They are about 5 weeks and 3days They looked bigger than the ones hatched a week before them I think maybe its because they have a cockerel father When my noilers start laying I plan to build a larger incubator with 5v fan and experiment with that, still looking for a bigger carton that can take up to 50 eggs |

sodeeqsulaimon88: Just an experiment oo Not a standard incubator I got a larger carton, put an indomie carton in it, cutting open one side. I line the bottom of the indomie carton with a towel. Put a lantern on the opposite side facing the side I cut opened I placed the thermometer/hygrometer on the towel to measure the temp and humidity, that was like a day before placing the eggs I had small water in a plactic placed beside the lantern I regulated the lantern till I got the ideal temperature 100.5 but it fluctuates a lot even after been stable for a long time so putting an eye on it is a must Turned eggs three time a day Raised humidity to 60% on the 18th day, though it has always fluctuated between 48 and 52% Ibhad a hard time raising it but I did it and to my surprise the eggs pipped on the 19th and hatched on the 20th Will build a better one in the future by God's grace I have forced air incubator in mind. 5 Likes |
