Flight makes U-turn to US after pilot forgets passport
Passengers headed to China aboard a recent United Airlines flight faced an unexpected travel headache after a pilot’s forgotten passport prompted their return to the United States.
Flight UA198 from Los Angeles to Shanghai was out over the Pacific Ocean on Saturday afternoon when it made a u-turn and headed to San Francisco, tracking data showed.
United confirmed Tuesday to AFP in an email that the plane, a Boeing 787 with 270 people onboard, made a stop in San Francisco “as the pilot did not have their passport onboard.”
“We arranged for a new crew to take our customers to their destination that evening,” the company said, adding that “customers were provided with meal vouchers and compensation,” without specifying.
Flight tracking data showed the plane landed at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport after midnight, about six hours behind its normal arrival time.
The United flight’s rerouting came as travelers around the world continued to face disruptions over the shutdown at London’s Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest hub, due to a power outage the day prior. https://punchng.com/flight-makes-u-turn-to-us-after-pilot-forgets-passport/#google_vignette

Ebonyi Federal University Suspends Governor Nwifuru’s Former Aide For Cult-Related Activities
A former aide to Francis Nwifuru, Ebonyi State Governor, has been suspended by the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, over alleged cult-related activities.
The suspended student, Felix Okemini, previously served as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security (Ebonyi North) before he was relieved of his position on Tuesday after he was pictured wearing an insignia suspected to belong to a secret cult during the university’s matriculation.
Okemini, was recently admitted to study Political Science.
The image, which circulated on social media, sparked outrage, leading to calls for his removal from both the government and the institution.
Nwifuru, through the Secretary to the State Government, Grace Umezuruike, announced Okemini’s dismissal earlier in the week.
Following the controversy, the university, in a letter signed by its Registrar, Dr. Ifeanyi Igwe, on Friday, suspended him indefinitely, citing a breach of the matriculation oath.
The letter read, “The Vice-Chancellor has considered the report on the allegation of cult-related behaviour levelled against you based on the display of cultism as shown on March 14, 2025, during the matriculation ceremony of the university.
“You are hereby informed of your matriculation oath and the fact that cultism and cult-related activities are unacceptable and against the rules and regulations governing students’ activities in the university as well as a security and moral threat to the University Community.
“Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate, has directed that you be suspended indefinitely from the university pending the outcome of the investigation of this matter by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee of the university.
“You are, by this letter, hereby suspended from the university. This letter conveys the Vice-Chancellor’s directive.” https://saharareporters.com/2025/03/22/ebonyi-federal-university-suspends-governor-nwifurus-former-aide-cult-related-activities#google_vignette

Restore Fubara, Engage Abdulsalami Committee, Rep Tells Tinubu
Awaji-Inombek Abiante said the intelligence the president relied upon to declare an emergency rule in Rivers might have been rigged.
Awaji-Inombek Abiante, a member representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency in Rivers State at the House of Representatives, has asked President Bola Tinubu to restore Governor Siminalayi Fubara before the expiration of the six-month emergency rule period.
Abiante also called on the president to engage the National Peace Committee headed by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, to mediate with the warring parties in the oil-rich state and find a common ground for peace.
The lawmaker spoke on the Sunday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political programme aired on
Tinubu, in a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, imposed a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspended Fubara and his deputy Ngozi Odu; as well as the Rivers State House of Assembly members for six months. Tinubu also appointed ex-naval chief, Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (rtd.), as sole administrator for the state for the period of the emergency rule.
Tinubu hinged his decision on Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, saying he can’t continue to watch the political situation in Rivers escalate without taking any action. His decision was backed by the National Assembly in a controversial voice vote that has been heavily faulted.
The suspension of Fubara and other democratically elected representatives has been expressly rejected and condemned by many eminent Nigerians, legal luminaries, and groups including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Femi Falana, the Labour Party (LP), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Nigerian Bar Association, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), among others.
Intelligence Rigged?
Abiante said there are a few gaps even in the actions of the National Assembly, saying provisions were not made for those who chose to vote a yes, a no or to abstain.
He said some of the gaps in the president’s claims include that Fubara did not make efforts to rebuild the demolished chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly. “That is not correct,” he said, citing the visit of the new sole administrator inspecting the building under construction that Fubara started.
“There was this issue that pipelines were broken; there was an explosion; it’s also on record that the pipeline is back to work,” Abiante said.
According to him, the intelligence the president relied upon to declare an emergency rule in Rivers might have been rigged.
“That is to tell us that it is either the intelligence that was relied upon may have been rigged. If in this country we could rig intelligence to the president, are we not in danger?” he asked.
Abiante suggested that the peace committee led by Abdulsalami should be called upon to intervene in the state’s political crisis. The peace committee has eminent Nigerians including Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah; the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad III; amongst others as members.
Bishop Matthew Kukah.
He said, “I can’t think of any other group of persons higher than that. If he had the opportunity as a military general to elongate his stay in power, he didn’t do it. Let us repopulate the committee with him taking the lead. Let us see if the parties involved would also refuse to subject themselves to the level of discussions.”
Sokoto Govt The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III. “It would be wrong to allow this thing to fester; it would even be very wrong to allow it to get to that six months because you will begin to play Nigerians against fellow Nigerians.
“On the streets of Port Harcourt, what is being discussed is that it is the fight to grab the resources of Rivers State. Let us not forget that Rivers State contributes so much to the welfare of Nigeria and Nigerians.
“Mr president should also understand that he also got some votes from Rivers State; it was not just one vote. In politics, one man cannot be in his polling unit and be in the local government area.
“So, no one man can deliver the votes in a state. If we now begin to say there is one Superman and because of that superman, we want to mortgage the people, if the people’s resistance comes, the superman can only cast a single vote and that would be all,” the lawmaker added.
‘Opposition Lost Its Voice’ Also speaking on the programme, a policy advisor, Baba Yusuf, scolded federal lawmakers from opposition parties in the National Assembly for losing their voices and not rejecting emergency rule in Rivers.
Yusuf, a former chief executive of Airport Free Trade Zone, Nigeria, said the rights of the people to vote for whoever they want have been suspended by the presidential proclamation.
“The people that have been entrusted with that trust by the people have failed the people and have now decided to take the fight to a personal level. However, you see it, it is a personal fight.
“The biggest focal point for me and Nigerians is the National Assembly. The president can do whatever he wants. What is key for us is that which was lacking 25 years ago before we got into the Fourth Republic that people died and we shed tears and we lost time with military juntas, the legislature is the missing link that made democracy what it is anywhere in the world.
“And here we are alas! We have a legislature that has come into play. I put squarely the responsibility of what happened in Rivers on the National Assembly, especially the opposition caucus that has suddenly lost their voice.”
Similarly, a social commentator, Dayo Akintobi, agreed with Yusuf that the opposition lost its voice in the National Assembly.
“Where was the opposition? Their voices were drowned out. I’m sure that the votes were not overwhelming; there would have been one or two dissents but there was no opportunity for them to even express that dissent.”
He said the framers of the Constitution did not intend to empower the president with the authority to truncate the will of the power vested in the democratic process.
Akintobi said it was a presidential overreach to declare a state of emergency and suspend the governor. https://www.channelstv.com/2025/03/24/restore-fubara-engage-abdulsalami-committee-rep-tells-tinubu/?fbclid=IwY2xjawJOHwJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHZ_O4M78X00Mtazk7o1dkUhYrSRCDMZQe88zyQkTQ3-4ZY_--4pd6NGkGA_aem_U58I7IdtgZH6ckLJ7mZ78Q&sfnsn=scwspwa

A female falcon was equipped with a GPS tracker during her journey from South Africa to Finland.
She covered approximately 230 km per day, flying in a straight line across African lands until she reached the desert in the north.
She then followed the path of the Nile River over Sudan and Egypt, avoiding flying over the Mediterranean Sea. Instead, she crossed over Syria and Lebanon, also steering clear of the Black Sea—because if she got thirsty, she wouldn’t be able to drink from it.
She continued in a straight line and reached Finland after 42 days.

Nigerian content creator misses seven-continent Guinness record due to visa delays, aims for new feat
Nigerian travel content creator Alma Asinobi may not be breaking the current Guinness World Record for the fastest journey across all seven continents after visa issues delayed her from reaching Sydney, Australia within the required time.
In an Instagram update on Sunday, Asinobi, who is still en route to Sydney, confirmed that her total journey time will be 71 hours and 35 minutes, falling short of the current record of 64 hours, set in February 2025 by American veteran Johnny Cruz Buckingham.
Reflecting on her attempt, she noted that if she had been competing against the previous record of 73 hours, set by Indian travellers in 2022, she would have beaten it.
However, due to multiple setbacks, she had already spent 63 hours, 54 minutes, and 33 seconds travelling when she made the announcement, making it impossible to surpass Buckingham’s 64-hour record.
Asinobi, who has faced multiple obstacles during her attempt due to her Nigerian passport, was also denied boarding on her flight to Perth, Australia, forcing her to rebook on a later flight to Sydney.
In her Instagram post on Sunday, she wrote, “From slide 9 you can already tell that it would take me 71 hours and 35 minutes to land in Sydney, Australia [Continent 7] and if I was running against the initial record based on the time I first announced it which was 73 hours 5 minutes held by Indian travellers Sujoy Kumar Mitra and Ali Irani in December 2022.
“Unfortunately, in February the record was reset to 64 hours by Johnny Cruz Buckingham, an American Veteran, and GWR took a few weeks to verify it and announce in March 2025.
“I know that I could have beat this record but for all the hurdles I had to face. I don’t know why Heathrow fire happened to compound it all… but the most important thing is that I’ve chosen to finish.”
“So close, but so far away. I may not have won this one, but we can sure win the next one together. My eyes may be swollen from all the tears I’ve cried and would probably still cry but I promise to find moments of laughter in between,” she wrote in her post.
Despite the disappointment, she emphasised that her attempt was about more than just the record.
“When I land, we will catch up on lives and we will pour our hearts out to each other, for now, let’s finish this! I really hope this attempt was worth something for a Nigerian out there,” she added.
Asinobi is now shifting her focus to her homecoming event on March 30, where she aims to break another record by gathering Nigerians to sign a national flag in solidarity.
“We still have one more record to break at the homecoming event on 30th of March where we will make history by signing our Nigerian flag made by #motthelabel
“I can’t wait to see you all there. I totally and physically cannot do that one without you. So please show up for me. Thank you for sparking conversations and being there with me through it all”
In her post, Asinobi also hoped that she was able to inspire people to do something that has scared them and not let the limitations outside their control get in the way just as she took on a challenge that was beyond her reality, control, and limitations.
PUNCH Online reports that throughout her journey, she has vocal about the visa and travel setbacks she encountered due to her Nigerian passport.
Unlike travellers from countries with better passport privileges, she noted that she has had to navigate complex visa requirements, expensive travel arrangements, and flight cancellations that threatened to derail her record attempt.
Her journey has also sparked widespread discussions about passport inequality and the barriers restricting global mobility for citizens of certain countries.
While she may not be taking home the Guinness World Record, supporters have still rallied behind her calling her a winner.
“You did win! A personal win, a win for Nigerians, a win for me as a fellow black girl navigating the world without passport privilege,” #chloeanabraidy commented. https://punchng.com/nigerian-content-creator-misses-seven-continent-guinness-record-due-to-visa-delays-aims-for-new-feat/#google_vignette

Crime › Nigerian Fraudster Escapes UK Deportation Over Healthcare Concerns In Nigeria by Morbeta11(op): 5:42am On Mar 24, 2025 |
Nigerian fraudster escapes UK deportation over healthcare concerns in Nigeria
A Nigerian fraudster who scammed women out of nearly £200,000 in an elaborate romance scheme has successfully avoided deportation after a tribunal ruled that his family’s health needs could not be adequately met in his home country.
Emmanuel Jack, 35, was sentenced to three years in prison in 2014 after deceiving six women he met on dating websites into transferring him a total of £186,000.
Posing as an architect, Jack preyed on vulnerable women, convincing them to send him large sums of money.
In 2022, eight years after his release from prison, the Home Office moved to deport Jack back to Nigeria, where he had lived until the age of 10 before relocating to the UK with his parents.
However, he challenged the deportation order, arguing that it violated his right to family life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
The Immigration and Asylum Tribunal in London ruled in his favor, concluding that deportation would be “unduly harsh” on his British wife and children, both of whom suffer from severe medical conditions requiring specialised care.
The judges determined that Nigeria was unlikely to provide the “bespoke” level of medical treatment currently available to Jack’s family under the NHS.
Court documents revealed that Jack’s case is one of many where foreign criminals have successfully resisted deportation by citing human rights protections.
The ruling comes amid a record backlog of 41,987 outstanding immigration appeals, the majority of which are based on human rights claims.
The backlog has surged by almost 500 percent since early 2022, posing a challenge to Labour’s pledge to expedite the removal of illegal migrants.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is now considering restrictions to prevent foreign criminals and illegal migrants from using Article 8 of the ECHR to evade deportation.
Jack arrived in Britain in 1997 and was studying business at the University of Salford when he orchestrated his online frauds.
Using aliases such as John Creed, John Windsor, and Johnnie Carlo Rissi, he targeted women under false pretenses, persuading them to send him money.
He was arrested, convicted, and jailed in March 2014. Before his conviction, Jack had successfully applied for British citizenship, which the Home Office later revoked.
In November 2022, he was formally notified of his deportation order.
Following his release from prison, Jack married a British woman and fathered two children.
The tribunal—comprising judges Victor Rae-Reeves and Luke Bulpitt—was informed of the severe health challenges facing his family.
His youngest child, an 18-month-old born prematurely, has significant developmental issues and requires continuous medical supervision and specialist NHS care. His six-year-old daughter also has vision impairments.
The tribunal ruled that deporting Jack’s family would cause excessive hardship.
“Moving to Nigeria would significantly disrupt that care, frustrate ongoing investigations and end the consistency of care that they have each been receiving to date. We consider that even if treatment is available, it is considerably harder to get treatment for all three of them in the same location,” the ruling stated as quoted by the Telegraph UK.
It further emphasised Jack’s essential role in his children’s lives, describing him as a “loving and very hands-on father” whose absence would negatively impact their well-being.
“We find that [Mr Jack] helps both children with their medical needs and therapies and his absence would potentially have a deleterious effect on their health because of the limitations that [his wife] may face in fulfilling such practical tasks,” the tribunal noted.
“We conclude that, given the extremely close relationships that, in these particular circumstances [Mr Jack] shares with [his family], [his] separation from the family as a result of deportation would have a very great emotional and psychological impact on them which goes far beyond the impact that might be experienced where there is not such a close and unbroken shared history.”
Responding to the ruling, a Home Office spokesperson said: “We strongly believed this individual, with a criminal conviction of fraud, should not remain in the UK, which is why deportation efforts were clearly made, and this case was contested in court.
“Foreign nationals who commit heinous crimes should be in no doubt that we will do everything to make sure they are not free on Britain’s streets, including removal from the UK at the earliest possible opportunity.
“Since the election we’ve removed 2,925 foreign criminals, a 21% increase on the same period 12 months prior.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/03/nigerian-fraudster-escapes-uk-deportation-over-healthcare-concerns-in-nigeria/#google_vignette
