Many countries helped SA during their hard times....not only Nigeria. And a country like Ghana also helped Nigeria to get independence too.....Ghana became a base/venue for meetings of pro-independence movements in Africa, including Nigeria.

KZN teen takes BMW Asia Cup title

DURBAN - KZN teen Matthew Swanepoel flew to Malaysia a week ago having just finished his school career and with only one thing in mind – the 2013 Formula BMW Asia Cup championship.

He started the season with a first-round retirement and had to play catch-up to fellow South African Shayur Harpal, who took the first race win of the season and remained in the lead going into the last week of the championship.

This past week - Super Six week - has been a true test of mental and physical ability... sis races in five days, including practice and qualifying. A real test of one’s mettle.

SET FOR A SHOWDOWN

Swanepoel set his strategy: one race at a time, despite torrential rain for some of the events.

The first three producing a podium finishes that set him up for a showdown with another South African – 2012 Champion Aston Hare who was on pace and taking wins.

Swanepoel dug deep for the next three races... Race 4: win. Race 5: win. They put him into the championship lead and it was all down to the final race.

He was running in a strong top three when contact was made and his car spun off but he rejoined in 11th. By the flag he was back up to seventh - was that good enough?

Once the dust had settled, the maths done, Matthew Swanepoel was the 2013 Formula BMW Asia Cup champion.

He said later: “I still can’t believe it. I thought for sure seventh in the last race was not enough. I never factored where the others finished.

"It’s a fantastic feeling. I've learned so much this season after starting on the back foot. The top step - what an awesome feeling!”

ZIMBABWEAN WHITE FARMERS IN TROUBLE IN NIGERIA

White farmers who left Zimbabwe eight years ago to settle in Nigeria are in trouble.

Local farmers in the area where they were settled are demanding their [size=14pt]land back[/size] because they are not benefiting from the activities of the commercial farmers and they have vowed to drive the white farmers out because their benefactor can no longer protect them..

About 14 000 farmers in six communities in the Shonga region of Kwara State sent a petition to the National Assembly last week claiming that they were dying a slow death as a result of the forceful takeover of their farmlands in 2004.

The villagers were moved out by then State governor Bukola Saraki to make room for commercial farmers from Zimbabwe who were given 1 000 hectares.

Bukola was elected to the Nigerian senate last year. The villagers are now up in arms because Bukola can no longer protect the white farmers and is facing fraud charges. They have vowed to “reverse the years of abuse and injustices even if it means adopting the tactics of Niger Delta militants”.

The military in the Niger Delta have been sabotaging the operations of oil companies to get money some of which they have used to develop their own communities.

An irate Chief Muregi Ndanusa fumed: “The land belongs to the people but this is a commercial venture. The Zimbabweans did not pay for the land. They arrived here without a cent in their briefcases; so how can you call them foreign investors?

“This is the most bizarre partnership we have ever seen because the initial capital was provided by tax payers and the bank loans were guaranteed by the state. So, my question is: what did the Zimbabwean farmers bring to the table; these are the question we are taking to the National Assembly”.

Bukola is said to have taken advantage of the plight of the white farmers who were haunted out of Zimbabwe to win international sympathy, and obtained loans from five banks to finance the operations of the farmers.

South Africa and Georgia have little in common aside from a tradition of wine-making and a turbulent recent history. But a group of white South African farmers say starting a new life in the former Soviet state could be the solution to their troubles at home.



South Africa's 40,000 white farmers, mainly Boers – descendants from Dutch settlers – say they fear that South Africa's government is threatening their livelihoods with land-reform policies. When they first came to Africa, the Boer Voortrekkers, or pioneers, left coastal colonies to forge a path to the interior of the country in search of fertile land. Now some of their descendants believe the answer to their problems might lie thousands of miles away in the Caucasus.

In what would be an extraordinary migration, the Georgian government has invited South Africa's farmers to buy up land in the country for next to nothing in exchange for bringing their expertise and knowledge of modern farming methods.

Papuna Davitaya, Georgia's State Minister for Diaspora, said: "We are looking for investors in our agricultural sphere, because Georgia historically always used to be an agricultural country but in Soviet times we lost these traditions."

He welcomed a delegation of South African farmers to the country recently and gave them guarantees about what they could expect if they made the move. "Boers are some of the best farmers in the world," Mr Davitaya said.

Last week, dozens of farmers attended a union meeting in Pretoria about a potential move to Georgia. A committee from the union plans to lay the groundwork in the coming months, and then co-ordinate a larger migration.

Hendrik Mills, a Boer farmer, told ABN television: "I think there are great prospects for farmers out there. It would be much better to invest money in Georgia than in Africa."

For many of the Boer farmers, whose ancestors settled in southern Africa 200 years ago, it would be tough to leave their ancestral homeland. But they say their lives are getting harder every month, citing fears of crime, violence, labour costs and land reform.

Piet Kemp, who is keen to emigrate, said: "We will start with 10 or 20 farmers, but I think there could be more than 1,000 farmers who could make a good life in Georgia."

Georgia's government hopes that importing farming expertise will boost the country's agricultural and wine sectors. Georgia has produced wine for centuries, but most of it is semi-sweet and not very popular in Europe. Georgian wines were well-liked in Russia but a political dispute between the two countries led to Moscow banning all imports. Georgians will perhaps be hoping that if the scheme works, they will also benefit from some of the success South African wines enjoy.

But adjusting to Georgia might prove tricky for Boer farmers. The Georgian language is hard to learn. And there are no direct flights to Africa from the country. Not only that, but the climates in the two countries are completely different, as are farming methods.

Yet Mr Kemp insisted that he and others were ready to try it. "I don't want to come and make a new South Africa in Georgia," he said. "If I am going, I will be a Georgian."

The Natives Land Act, 1913 (subsequently renamed Bantu Land Act, 1913 and Black Land Act, 1913; Act No. 27 of 1913) was an act of the Parliament of South Africa aimed at regulating the acquisition of land by "natives", i.e. black people. The Act formed an important part of the system of Apartheid and is of importance for both legal and historical reasons.



The Natives Land Act of 1913 was the first major piece of segregation legislation passed by the Union Parliament, and remained a cornerstone of Apartheid until the 1990s when it was replaced by the current policy of land restitution. The act decreed that only certain areas of the country could be owned by natives. These areas totalled only 13% of the entire land mass of the Union.

Impact The Act created a system of land tenure that deprived the majority of South Africa's inhabitants of the right to own land which had major [b]socio-economic repercussions.[\b] Had the Supreme Court not rendered the Act's application void for a few years it also would have disenfranchised all "natives" in the Cape Colony, where blacks and people of mixed race (Cape Coloureds) had greater political rights than the other provinces as a legacy of British rule. The Natives (Urban Areas) Act of 1923 deemed urban areas in South Africa as "white" and required all black African men in cities and towns to carry around permits called "passes" at all times. Anyone found without a pass would be arrested immediately and sent to a rural area.

It was replaced in 1945 by the Natives (Urban Areas) Consolidation Act, 1945 which imposed essentially the same restrictions. This Act outlined requirements for African peoples' "qualification" to reside legally in white metropolitan areas. To do so, they had to have Section 10 rights, based on whetherthe person had been born there and resided there always since birth;
the person had laboured continuously for ten years in any agreed area for any employer, or lived continuously in any such area for less than ten years;
the person was the spouse, spinster or son under eighteen years of age of an African person, falling into the above two categories, usually lived with him and had originally entered the area legitimately; or
the person had been granted a permit to remain by a labour bureau.

The ironically named Natives (Abolition of Passes and Co-ordination of Documents) Act of 1952, commonly known as the Pass Laws Act, made it compulsory for all black South Africans over the age of 16 to carry the "pass book" at all times within white areas. The law stipulated where, when, and for how long a person could remain.

The document was similar to an internal passport, containing details on the bearer such as their fingerprints, photograph, the name of his/her employer, his/her address, how long the bearer had been employed, as well as other identification information. Employers often entered a behavioural evaluation, on the conduct of the pass holder.

An employer was defined under the law and could be only a white person. The pass also documented permission requested and denied or granted to be in a certain region and the reason for seeking such permission. Under the terms of the law, any governmental employee could strike out such entries, basically canceling the permission to remain in the area.

A pass book without a valid entry then allowed officials to arrest and imprison the bearer of the pass. These passes often became the most despised symbols of apartheid. The resistance to the Pass Law led to many thousands of arrests and was the spark that ignited the Sharpeville Massacre on March 21, 1960, and led to the arrest of Robert Sobukwe that day.

Colloquially, passes were often called the dompas, literally meaning the "dumb pass." One line of history for all the "coloured-people in South Africa. The "coloured " included all Indian, Asian and Arabs. Other movement controls applied to other groups. Indian people, for example, were barred from the Orange Free State
