It's not all about speeding or over-speeding. It's about confidence, being attentive and maintaining a steady speed. Like I said earlier, op was agitated, curious, and got distracted by other cars. 80-100mph is a good spead at any time.

With that speed, you can easily and quickly respond to any urgent pop-ups, or powering down to dodge a pot hole and mostly importantly have a idea of how the engine is performing. Travelling isn't about race, but about getting to your destination. Op forgot about this because he was agitated.

The capacity of the engine does not matter, but how you handle and drive it, is what matters.
With 80-100mph and occasional 120mph will get you to your destination even if you arrive an hour late late after those flying hummer buses.

I challenge you, if you're a Nigerian, get that vehicle fixed and drive it back to lagos yourself. You stand to gain a lot of experience from that. Atleast, you won't be road jjc again. There's always a first time and you've had your own fair share.

Fix it and drive it back to become a pro.
If he don't do the above, he is a boy and not a man.

What will he tell his children that he was so scared he abandoned the car for a bus.

The same spirit that made him cover nearly 700km can make it retrace his steps, provided he fixes a new engine not repairing that dead engine.

And what is worse, the whole internet knows about him.

Don't chicken out!

Everyone is watching!!

I feel for him, if pity na consideration, provided him go gree drive the damn thing back to Lagos, na him go get am. Afterall, he is just starting life, no be corper him be? if the moto upgrade, to sell am no go hard, so boy go fit buy better horsepower, at least 150 horsepower if not more!

The toks engine is sourced from Jabi motor parts market at 150. His engine will be traded in for 20k which i did not agree since i can easily count 1 part that i hear is worth 20k. The throttle body, alternator, A/C compressor, power stearing pump, coils, starter motor are easily worth more than 80k individually so 50k should'nt be a bad deal. The option is to take them away and they can go with the rest for 20k. The crank shaft in there was bought from same guy at 25k and if he cant buy the engine at 20k without the accessories, then i know what he intends. I want to make a 50k bargain on it complete or i take and keep the listed parts while the carcass is sold 15-20k.

I shall update where necessary.
Wrong move. He will live to regret it. Talk him out of such an unreasonable deal! Buy the engine but don't sell his.

I also have this in mind, but that would be after fixing it, I prefer to take bus and be safe than drive car and be sorry.
Haba, if you change that engine and follow all the suggestions above, that car will take you back to Lagos!

Which kind fear be this? Even those that are involved in accidents drive again, engine knock, you change am, you come de fear the motor? winch dey inside the motor? to change engine na to reset the moto!

change the engine, drive it back to lagos, sell it in lagos (if you must sell it) and recover your money!

Make this story end well, change engine, drive am go Lagos, if you do that, it will do loads to your confidence.

but to fix motor, come follow bus, me no like that kind ending!

I appreciate your write up but in some cases it's also negligence and carelessness from doctors. I lost my son few weeks ago after being born 4days later to jaundice. Despite the fact my wife kept alerting them that she has an history with jaundice from the theater where she had a casseran procedure. It's a story I don't want to start writing about right now but the child should not be dead if not for carelessness from the hospital doctors. Everyone keeps telling me to sue the hospital I v just decided to let go.
Accept my sympathy, you didn't just lose a baby, you lost dreams, nothing can erase such sorrow! Maybe you should have gotten a friendly doctor or hospital to do the needful since the delivery hospital didn't care to do so.
Sorry

The car tried. Even with the rebuilt engine, the car would have made the journey. I think it was negligence and not paying attention to the sound of the engine by nurey caused the knock. Upon leaving gwagwalada the next morning, as a good driver, he should have noticed the change of sound of the engine even within 10minutes of drive from gwag.

The engine was completely strained and stressed and op killed it for lack of attention.
I think op was stressed as his engine was and thus, he forgot to take notice of the sound of the engine.
Sorry, you can get someone to help you buy the engine at ladipo and then send it through luxurious buses coming that way. They will stop at zaria and drop your engine for you. You will pay for that though.
i wholeheartedly agree, not so much the engine that was at fault, but the driver.
Car TalkRe: High Fuel Consumption... MPV 2001 by MPVGoddess: 2:10pm On Nov 04, 2015
I have done 480 kilometers (298 miles) on 3/4 tank

14.25 Gallons = 53.942118 Litres

If you keep the speed down, say 60 (97km/hr) to 65 miles (105 km/h), and don't drive with a lead foot, you can have a range of 600 kilometer to a full tank, although i always top up by 1/4 mark as a rule, that is somewhere between 450 kilometers and 500 kilometers

Your MPV is very sick

Nurse it back to health and you will find it a very nice and reliable travel companion

I strongly disagree, the "op" came to my workshop for a scan. The following where the problem of his car for high fuel consumption

1)Thermostat removed

2) Fans connected directly. The noise was so much even when compared to that of a trailer. A trailer would sound better. Over cooling of engine resulting to dumping more fuel in the combustion chamber

3) misfire detected on cylinder 5

4) engine coolant temperature sensor absent. Must have been removed by kazeems

5) intake manifold runner control bank1 stucked close. There is nothing what soever to monitor the amount of intake air. The design of the mazda mpv engine is such that only the map sensor and mass airflow cannot do the monitoring of intake air.

So therefore my conclusion is that all this would make his car consume excess.

Ps: black smoke already coming out of "op" exhaust as a result of all this
Seriously no ECT sensor or sensors?

The vehicle has two, the one that drives the ECU I assume, not the one that drives the gauge at the dash? Or present but not connected since if it/those were not present, there would be a coolant leak!
Car TalkRe: High Fuel Consumption... MPV 2001 by MPVGoddess: 6:19am On Nov 04, 2015
Fuel Economy for the MPV 2001 is said to be 18 city / 23 highway by the manufacturer

16 -19 MPG is common in stop and go traffic such as you must have encountered on that road because although its highway, its not a smooth as silk, so that translate to 6.8 - 8.1 Km/L or 14.7 - 12.4 L/100KM

Your MPV has a 19 Gallon tank, that is 71.9228 litres

At N87/litres, 5,000 naira of petrol got you 57.5 litres

Let's say your fuel economy figures are 16 MPG or 6.8Km/L or 14.7L/100KM

And using a round trip of 280 kilometers (173.98 miles) via E1
OR
And using a round trip of 360 kilometers (223.69) via Olumi

How much fuel should the vehicle have consumed assuming all was well?

Let me define the expression "all is well":

That is intact upstream oxygen sensors, clean air filter, clean MAF, plugs that aren't worn, perfect spark plug wires, correct tire pressure, use of either 5w-30 or 5w-20 synthetic engine oil, exhaust pipes that aren't leaking, thermostat in place, fans commanded on and off by the engine computer and not commanded to be on all the time by some rewire, intact catalyst, driving with a not so heavy foot?

So let me ask:

mileage of the vehicle?

tire size? and tire pressure? Recommended to use 215/60/16 with 38 to 40 PSI

What sensors did you change?

When last did you change the air filter?

Clean the MAF? as well as the throttle body? infact also clean the entire manifold? as well as the IAC?

What plugs are you running in her?

What engine oil do you use? Mazda recommends 5w-20 for the 2001 although the engine is no different from the 2000 in which they recommended 5w-30. Get that grade in fully synthetic flavor!

Can you get a panel beater to confirm you do not have a leaking exhaust and that your catalyst is intact?

is your thermostat intact?

Could you also run a scan and post the codes? Would be extremely helpful in diagnosis and narrowing down the fault?

Fuel economy advice for the MPV:
Apart from first gear changes which must occur at around 3,000 RPM try to make all other gear changes around 2,000 to 2,500 RPM and keep the revs counter under 2,500 and the speed under 65 miles if fuel economy is your goal!
