Car TalkRe: Prevalence Of Wrong Auto Diagnostics In Nigeria by MPVGoddess: 1:54pm On Feb 28, 2017
boldx:
The solution to the issue though its solved is in the original post. Your car overheated ONLY when d A/c was switched on. So the problem was with the air conditioning system.
Could be both - a used radiator is a big NO NO.

Better use a new double cell (Nigeria speak) or double panel ( normal speak) radiator than a used single panel radiator!

That is not to say that the A/C system was not at fault.

As to the issue at hand - there is methodical learning and there is haphazard learning. Auto technicians in Nigeria learn by the later rather than the former in the majority of the cases. So they don't tend to understand at the atomic level how systems interrelate and inter depend and this shows up in their diagnosis and troubleshooting.

Not all of them are like that.

Maybe you interacted with just the former, but I have interacted with both sets.

Pennsylvania State

Cool. So my timing was on the mark!

Like you, I got an email from cgfns.

BUT

Still struggling with CGFNS verification.

They queried the documentation sent by the council.

The problems have to do with the nursing council back home having a policy of attaching their transcript to CGFNS documentation instead of filling the documentation the CGFNS sends.

I just hope you don't end up facing the same trouble.

Once that is cleared will be able to take the NCLEX exam

Car TalkRe: Help With My Hyundai Accent Electricals by MPVGoddess: 3:01pm On Feb 12, 2017
solozo72:
I am presently not with the Mechanic so I am stating what he told me via phone.

The engine had been removed a long time ago, about 8months now. I had initially wanted to ring it but felt discouraged and decided to rather buy a complete engine. Meanwhile I had sold the old engine as scrap and the vehicle left like that without engine.

Last week I sent money to the mechanic to get the Engine. He got it, fixed it and said he needed a car electrician to fix the electrical. I called one that I had, who came and tried to fix the electrical but he said that the former engine had one "sensor" while this new one had two "sensors" but that he would see what he can do about it. He went to Ladipo and got another sensor. For two days now he(electrician) had been working on it and yet to get it right.

According to the mechanic, the engine cranks but will not start. The electrician has told me that he wants to consult his boss to know what else he can do.

I feel the electrical guy does not fully understand the vehicle. So I am looking to get another car electrician who is more experienced in this type of vehicle.

Kindly help a brother with the contact details of a good electrical guy please.

PS: The vehicle is in Lagos.
Always replace engine with its exact equivalent

Your mechanic did not do that - if he did, you don't need to do any electrical work.

You may need to involve law enforcement to force the mechanic and his business partner ( engine seller) or if you prefer the market union to get you the exact same engine in the vehicle.

But you should confirm that it is not starting because he sold your ECU (as someone else suggested) or some other sensitive electronics required to get the car started.

All the best
Car TalkRe: The Best Drivers In The World by MPVGoddess:
geebeeohh:
For all ye petrolheads who is or are the best drivers in the world. For me
1. rally drivers
2. f1
3. smugglers grin
4. touring car
5. long distance truck drivers
F1 - Because it takes a lot of discipline and calculation to drive at speeds of 240mph (380km/h) and above and not have an incident/accident. I know because I drive between 100mph (160km/h) and 120mph (192km/h) or more if I get a chance and I know what it takes to drive that fast without getting into trouble, now imagine speeds double of that

I would replace 5 with long distance bus drivers - those guys deserve far more respect than we give them, they know the roads like the back of their hands, they know alternate route, they also have mastered the art of navigating pothole infested roads day in day in for years on end without incident ( except for a few).

Long distance truck drivers are known for intimidation and all sorts of malpractice and certainly do not qualify for the title which you seek to bequeath!

I second the comment above about smugglers (but to be honest those guys can do stunts on vehicles, I have witnessed a few),I am not competent to comment on 1 and 4 because I don't follow those!

The trade was learnt via technology transfer from waukesha and caterpillar certified engine rebuilders from US who came to train our engineers. we also have a Vibrations Analyst and Waukesha Engine certified Engineer as part of the team.
The run of the mill technicians in Nigeria do not go through this trouble of getting original parts to rebuild an engine.

So i wanted to be sure where that came from, and I like your response to the other gentleman

It is good to know that people like you exist, in the States, you can find people who do so many things you need online, in Nigeria that is not the case, you have to ask someone who knows someone who knows who does X or Y or Z

Even more interesting is the fact that you are not in Lagos, and that this is teamwork not a one-man show.

Keenly following, if you do this job right, and maintain a good attitude towards potential customers and your professional colleagues, you will open doors that will surprise even you.

Get a website too do not rely only on this forum to promote your trade!

Reacting, the FCT sector commander of the FRSC, Sunday E.Oghenekaro, confirmed the accident saying the four people who died were all students of the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada.

He blamed the accident on excessive speeding by the Peugeot driver.

“So the advice generally is that parents must ensure they avoid giving access to vehicles to their children when they have not been trained and licensed to drive,” he said.

He added that,“ it is very unfortunate that those children ought to have been in school at that time of the night.”
What of the potholes? Don't they cause accidents too? I think that statement is not professional and is very ill-timed, in the light of the losses sustained by the families!

Car TalkRe: Honda Is Always 1,2 Steps Away From The Toyota by MPVGoddess: 6:14am On Jan 19, 2017
interesting and related from Quora, if you can follow the link and read the comments over there: https://www.quora.com/Why-does-Toyota-have-so-much-higher-market-share-than-Honda
Toyota started as a company that produced fabric looms, and the company decided to diversify into making cars in the 1930's. They applied the expertise of running a large industrial company to the challenge of building and selling cars. Toyota's claim to fame is the Toyota Production System, which allowed them to build high quality products and eliminate defects along the way. Culturally, Toyota is very focused on success as a company, and they are very focused on processes and statistics to keep the machine humming smoothly.

Case in point- the 1997 Camry was designed with one goal in mind- to be cheaper to manufacture without sacrificing reliability. The 1992-1996 Camry was already a successful product, so they did not make it more fuel efficient, roomier, safer, or faster. They simply made it easier to assemble and removed features like triple sealed doors which they felt were unnecessary in that market.

Toyota has many more models than Honda, and they have perfected the use of common platforms to produce a wide variety of vehicle types with common engines and other components.

Honda, in contrast, is a car company, focused on making cars. Their founder was a bona-fide gearhead and always wanted to make cars. Honda as a company is passionate about engineering the best that they can build for a given price. They are sometimes not so smart about product-market fit. (e.g. the Ridgeline and Acura RL)

Honda pioneered variable valve timing technology and their engines are the best in the world. The import tuner community has embraced Honda because of this- they incorporate expensive features like double wishbone suspensions and forged crankshafts into their products, features which add cost but are all but unnoticeable to the average buyer. They redesign their products from the ground up on a regular schedule and will take risks when Toyota will not.

I don't think there's a substantial difference in reliability between a Honda and Toyota product, but there is a difference in terms of cost. With fewer models across which to amortize engineering costs, and shorter model cycles, it simply costs more to produce a Civic than a Corolla. This is why Honda doesn't offer as many incentives, and the out the door price of a Corolla is significantly different than a Civic.

As a company, Toyota is clearly better. But Hondas are better cars.

Oga, u should decide that yourself cos there is no fixed price.

What u will consider is the amount u bought the car, how much they pay to board the bus to the state he will be going, fuel consumption to that place and come with a reasonable price that won't hook him and pls don't be greedy since he will be the one working with it.
Perfectly understand, i was thinking in terms of percentages. Example Uber is 20 - 25%, partner gets the balance and shares that with his driver if he is not a partner driver. I have heard figures though.

That was question two.

Question 1: can this type of vehicle make money doing intra-state as opposed to inter-state?

Can a 7/8 seater be successfully commercially used for intra-city transportation?

Car TalkRe: Pothole Warriors And Survivors - Share Your Stories Here! by MPVGoddess: 12:37am On Jan 03, 2017
the difference between first world and third world is as clear as the difference between night and day!

Consider how potholes are treated in Canada versus how they are treated in Nigeria:

Hector Moreno, Toronto manager of road operations, City of Toronto, Canada had this to say:

“If you submit a pothole complaint, we have to fix it within 24 hours on an expressway, five days for a main arterial road and up to 20 days on secondary roads and local streets, But typically complaints received for potholes are attended to within 48 hours, and we have patrols on the expressways 24/7.”

Imagine how many lives and limbs and property would be saved if potholes on Nigerian highways/expressways were fixed on within 20 days (which is the repair time-frame for secondary roads and local streets in Canada) as against the 24 hours ((which is the repair time-frame for expressways in Canada)

Nigeria has got a long way to go!

Here are some suggestions to battle potholes:

Top up your tire pressure: The best protection against potholes is properly inflated tires, Cooney-Mann says. Look inside the manual or the driver’s door jamb to find the proper tire pressure for your car - the number on the side of the tires is the maximum recommended by the tire manufacturer. Check tire pressure monthly.

Slow down and watch out:
Spring is pothole season, so you should be keeping your eyes peeled, says APA’s Iny. But what about the potholes you might not be able to see? Watch for cyclists - and other cars - swerving to avoid them, says the CAA. “Stay off seams at the edges and centre of the road, a key spot where potholes usually develop,” says CAA’s D’Arbelles. “Be cautious when the roads are wet, as there may be a pothole under that puddle.”

Try to drive over it: If you see a pothole, your first instinct might be to swerve - and that could cause damage that you could have otherwise avoided. Damage only happens when your tires hit the pothole.

“It’s actually okay to just drive over them - you just want to avoid hitting them with your tires,” Cooney-Mann says. “People often swerve and then hit it with one of their wheels - that’s when the damage happens.”

The only time you don’t want to drive over a pothole? If something big enough to damage the underside of your car is sticking out of it.

Don’t brake:
“It can cause a wheel to lock and transmit a harsher impact to the vehicle,” says APA’s Iny.

Car TalkToyota Soy-based Wiring Lawsuit Says Rodents Chew Wiring by MPVGoddess(op): 10:39pm On Dec 31, 2016
Toyota owner claims soy-based wiring invites animals to have breakfast, lunch & dinner.

December 18, 2016 — A Toyota soy-based wiring lawsuit alleges mice, rats, squirrels and other rodents chew on the soy-based wiring like it's a delicacy, leaving drivers wondering why their vehicles are suffering from all kinds of problems.

Filed by 2015 Toyota Avalon owner Heidi Browder, the soy-based wiring lawsuit alleges Toyota skipped using plastic or glass-based insulation in place of soy, which is allegedly better for the environment.

According to the plaintiff, she learned the hard way about the soy wiring when her Avalon wouldn't start and a look under the hood showed wires chewed, so she had the car towed to a dealer. Toyota told her rodents had caused the damage and it would be no problem to repair the problems as long as she could cough up $6,000 to cover the bill.

The lawsuit alleges Toyota's warranty wouldn't pay for repairs because the damage came from an outside source, even though the technician allegedly said chewed soy wiring is common in Toyota vehicles.

The plaintiff says her insurance company came to the rescue, but Browder was still left paying a $500 deductible, something she says the Toyota warranty should have covered from the beginning.

The plaintiff claims Toyota should be fully aware of what the critters are doing to the soy wiring because of complaints that can be found across the Internet. A few of those complaints came from Maryland Toyota owners who described their vehicles as suffering from warning lights and stalling engines.

"Yesterday morning when starting my 2014 4runner the trac off light stayed illuminated along with the check engine light. I took the vehicle to the dealership and it was discovered that the vehicle was damaged by rodents (chewing, droppings). An electrical wire had been completely chewed through. I turned the damage into my insurance company but am out a days work, $50 deductible, $100 deposit for rental vehicle and $5.10 tax daily on the rental." - 2014 Toyota 4Runner owner / Rosedale, Maryland

"Rodents have discovered the soy compound used to insulate the wires. My daughter has had to replace wiring twice in the last month. The damage to the wiring results in engine and transmission issues including stalling." - 2012 Toyota Camry owner - Waldorf, Maryland

According to the lawsuit, Toyota refuses to cover repair costs and leaves owners holding the checkbook or turning to their insurance company to bail them out.

The Toyota soy-based wiring lawsuit, if certified as a class-action, will include thousands of Toyota vehicles across the U.S.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas - Heidi Browder vs. Toyota Motor Corporation, et al.

The plaintiff is represented by Cory S. Fein.

Toyota joins Honda in answering to lawsuits filed over animals chewing soy-based wiring. In January 2016, Honda was sued after owners complained the soy wiring cause havoc with the vehicles.
