Hello house please i need your advice and its kind of urgent. My sister is planning to have her baby in the USA early next year and she is yet to get the visa. she is already in touch with the hospital she wants to use over there and they are willing to give her a letter to the embassy as long as she pays part of her hospital and Dr fees, that means she will tell them at the embassy she is going to have a baby since she will get a letter and at the POE . Her questions are:
1.what should she fill on d DS-160 form as visa type? B1/B2 or B2
2.Does she need a letter of invite from the person she will be staying with, if yes what should the letter state.

Thanks so much for ur reply

Education / Re: So What Do You Expect From Your Higher Institution? by MrFox1(m): 11:12am On Apr 18, 2011
This topic is not really about Highland Tech.

I want to use this medium collate people's opinion on expectations from their Higher Institution. Without making any distinction between type of institution, whether it is a univeristy, a polytechnic or College of Education/ Technology, Technical College.

I really will like you to share your expectations from the school (higher institution) you are in now or the one you want to attend.

Please share us, What is you expectation?

Some university in the UK and US as part of Total Quality Management, see students as their customers, even though some educationists argue that for students to be treated as customers they need to have expectations.

If you dont have expectations it may be difficult to satisfy you as a student.

Please share your expections and in one word of (yes/No) tell us if you are currently satisfied with your higher institution.

Thank you again.
Education / So What Do You Expect From Your Higher Institution? by MrFox1(m): 12:51am On Apr 18, 2011
Findings show that many students have misaligned expectations, economist refer to it as irrational expectations. These they say is due to misinformation or lack of information about their academic ability or effect on their lives.

in a survey of students in a higher institution in Nigeria, students said their expectations were met by the institution could not specifically state iin which aspect and the ones that said the school did not meet their expectation, said the building was not attractive enough.

Strangely, they did not complain about quality of lectures, material, library and books, laboratory equipments, exam feedback, competence of lecturersm or objective assessments.

This means students are looking for admission in different school with wrong or no expectations.

When you suposedly complete your studies, how do you measure that the service you cam to the school for has been provided.

Before you choose a course or school, learn your capability and have an expectation. Life is short too for anyone to have so many disappointments.

Those that were struggling to study medicine without the mental capability for it, eventually drop out to study something is social sciences after they seat for MB exams twice.

Everyone wants to be termed as successful and so wants to study the course of successful professionals in the society. Doctor, lawyer, architecht, engineer etc. However, these professions is not for anybody or everybody, you must be very smart. We cant afford to have incompetent professionals.
Please find what you can be very good at doing. It does not make you less successful.

a Cisco certified network administrator is a professional, there is MCP, MCSE, MSDBA, A+ and more. You can be a programmer, DBA and many others.

Information Technology welcomes you to become a professional in I.T. with option self-employment. Its a respectable job in a modern industry.

@Highland College of technology, Ibadan. You can get your ND, HND/B.Tech and before you finish you will be a certified professional. Find Highland Tech on the internet.

Its sad you think I am a criminal. I did not ask you for money to get you admission. I only advertised and If you dont need admission you should have ignored the topic. No one has tried to rip you off.
I am not an Idiot, and if you were a civilized person you will not have said that to a stranger.

All those who have attended Highland College of Technology are glad, recognised and are making something with their lives.

If you can read, you would have read that nairaland can be used for sharing information about education.

But you are so smart you are still looking at admission topics on nairaland. Anyway, God will help you ever gain admission anywhere at all.

I graduated over 10years ago, I have master from UK and 9yrs of working in IT. Promoting a school on nairaland to attract students is not criminal. You may need to use your dictionary before typing messages publicly.

Education / Tough Utme Admission! Is There Hope ? by MrFox1(m): 9:25pm On Oct 14, 2010
many  people will not be admitted this year and according to bayes theorem
the probability that a candidate will get admission next year given that he did not get this year is P(A|N)= [P(A)n P(N)]/p(N). good luck with the calculations.

On a more serious level what are you doing about your admission? if you dont have it by now, dont expect any magic list to come out again.

JAMB rounded up admissions for universities in JUN/JUL
Poly/College of Education were rounded up in AUG/SEP

What are you doing about now and next year?

Your first, second, Third and fourth choices have not offered you admission by now that means NOTHING FOR YOU. NFY
Try to prepare for next year or apply to another school. Because even next year there are no assurances of admission. All the best

atunje:

Hello Nairalanders,

I am from Agege,Lagos State and 20yrs in age.
I am am formerly a great ife student studying computer engr.
I have used a year there but due to the course i was given,
i had to take 2009/2010 JAMB and chose
UNILAG(electrical/electronics engineering).

Because i don't have passion for computer engr,I had to take 2009/2010JAMB and chose UNILAG(electrical/electronics engineering).
Now i have been offered admission in UNILAG for Electrical/electronics engineering

Electrical/electronics engineering was the initial course i
wanted to study but due to how OAU go about their admission using
JAMB score didn't favour me.

But i still want and intending to go to OAU.

I am thinking of taking Jamb UTME 2010/2011 and rechoose electrical/electronics engineering in OAU, i am really confused, but i really like OAU and my dream course
electrical/electronics engineering,

The only mistake i did was that i shld have chosen OAU again, And now OAU cut-off mark for this year is out and very low

Please i will warmly welcome any advice

You can contact me on:
08082687116
08066582364
08030773298

Or email at atunje_afolabi@yahoo.com.

Na wa o, my brother you just dey rob your yearly admission for our face. Where people dey seek admission you dey drop out of computer engineering to do JAMB for admission in elect elect. And you are thinking of doing another UTME next year!
My advice to you is to follow your dreams, but don't confuse your dream for your passion. The opportunities for computer engineering are not bad when compared with electrical engr and unilag is not bad compared with OAU. They are both good universities. Thirdly, at your age I was already in 300level Mech Engr (1997), don't waste time. You still have 5years plus strike to study Engr. And the quality of education in Nigeria is still what it is. Do what you have to do, get a 2.1 or 1st class. Go for masters abroad. Wish you the best.
NB. I have written my advice here for anyone else to learn one or two things from it.
Education / Re: Share Your UTME Experience. by MrFox1(m): 8:18am On Dec 02, 2009
Bad news guys, from the meeting they had last week JAMB only appealed to the universities and Polys to abolish post JAMB so that UTME JAMB will have the standard/integrity required across board.

I doubt if the institutions will ever stop post JAMB screening exam except a law is formed against it.

I don't even blame the institutions, when someone that got 280 in JAMB turns out to be incapable of understanding and passing the first semester course in first year. That casts a lot of doubt on the credibility of JAMB.

I know many candidates now will be gearing up to pay someone to help them cheat and pass.
That is why the institutions will want to do post JAMB, but in actual fact they are just making money with it.

Even our elders/leaders can not conduct a free and fair election, corruption has eaten into the blood of Nigerians like cancer.
People collecting money from candidates to help them dont care about them, candidates that are paying for help have failed themselves, because they will always lack that confidence of succeeding on their own. This will always be reflected in their lives and work. JAMB officials taking money are cursed, law enforcement conniving with mercenary will one day give account, parents that pay their childrens way to pass will judged.

Everyone that contributes to the failure of our educational system by paying, approving, collecting or not enforcing will have their portion in the curse.

I hope Nigerians will change, but if the leaders of tomorrow are themselves cheating what is the hope for our future. Some of you will be senators, govenors, chairmen, obas, chiefs, ministers, directors, managers, bankers, engineers, ASP, IG, perm sec, army chief, naval chiefs, etc but if corruption is the basis of your development there is really nothing to look forward to in your future, is there?

God help us!! cry

Prince Raj:

Mr Fox, I want to ask this question here on Nairaland, so everyone can benefit from the response.
I have read your post on the reasons why employers discriminate against HND and I have seen your reasons why candidates should consider highland college of technology education.

You adviced that polytechnics should get lecturers that have P.hD and do more research. So I want ask does highland college of technology have P.hD lecturers doing research? Or how is highland college of technology planning to differentiate her graduates in the job market?

At least you should practice what you preach. Let us know please.

Our lecturers are Masters holders, Ph.d holders and students from university of Ibadan.
You can get the feedback of the quality of education from our students.
Education / Re: Share Your UTME Experience. by MrFox1(m): 1:33pm On Nov 22, 2009
Hanoobaba:

Where are the exams going to be held? Cos I know how many the total annual population of UME candidates are. Year in year out problems of candidates not finding their centres and others being posted to other states arise.
Now UME and MPCE will be written at the same time, the population will be overwhelming. I dunno, maybe neighboring countries will also be used as centers! undecided
I wish I could better explain this in words without using mathematics, those who dont understand sets please pardon me.

If we let U = {candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions in 2009}
A=  {candidates seeking admission into Nig universities in 2009}=1,145,961
              B=  {candidates seeking admission into Nig mono,poly&colleges of educatn  in 2009} =342,957

U= (A union B) , candidates who sat for UME and MPCE in 2009 <> A+B  (my point)

I believe (A intercept B) >0 and tend towards 85% of B
i.e. 85% of those who sat for MPCE also sat for UME

C={candidates seeking admission into Nig mono,poly&colleges of educatn  in 2009 ONLY}= U-(A intercept B)= 15% of B
Therefore, U=A+15%B
                 U=1,145,961 + (0.15X342,957)
                 U=1,197,405

So if UME and MPCE were taken at the same time in 2009, the number of candidates JAMB would have to cater for would only have increased by 4.5% equivalent to 51,444.

If we project  that next year, 2010, the number of candidates will increase by 10% (as we have seen from experience) then JAMB will only need to cater for 1,317, 146 candidates at once which is just a 15% increase in the number they are currently having.
I think its not such an astronomic increase which JAMB can not handle. There are other issues such as proper addressing of houses, streets and schools in the country that is affecting centre postings.
We really won't need to go outside the country, to a place like Benin republic for JAMB exam.
It will get better hopefully, lets keep the faith. I believe UTME brings a lot of promises, both in removing discrimination between HND- B.Sc and  standards.

What do you believe? Don't forget, what you believe can happen to you. (power of the mind)

Education / Re: Polytechnics Barred From Admitting Business, Art Students by MrFox1(m): 6:23pm On Nov 21, 2009
Though the topic of this thread is misleading. I agree with NBTE that the number of students admitted in polytechnic should be in the proper ratio and that the institutions should not over admit students e.g. 30,000 where the capacity is 5,000, that is 600% =overload

Certainly, no quality education can come out of that.

If this NBTE's plan annoys anyone, please stop for a moment and consider that this could be the reason why employers discriminate against OND and HND.

The institutions are just producing bulk rubbish. Imagine a class of 1000 financial studies students. Quality can not come out of that class. Can a lecturer assess their assignment or teach them properly? He will only sell hand-outs.
A class that has more than 60 students is extra large. At least for quality knowledge transfer between lecturer and students.

We cant keep condoning these money making schemes called "polytechnic education" It must be corrected so that HND graduates can be attractive to employers once again.

The technical courses are not the oversized classes if we look closely.
This not a fight against Business and Art courses, its an effort to ensure quality and standard in education.
We need quality business and art graduates in this country so they should get quality training in properly sized classes and not oversized parttime evening classes.
Good luck.
