Steve Jobs, co-founder and chief architect of Apple-Inc‘s massive success in the personal computer and digital tools industry, died Wednesday aged 56.

Jobs died 42 days after resigning as CEO of Apple, a company he had co-founded with Steve Wozniack over 30 years ago. In two spells as CEO he built Apple into one of the world’s most valuable companies worth around $350 billion.

Steve Jobs had been ousted at age 30 from the company he helped found but was brought back after Apple bought his animation company Pixar and restored to his former position. he quickly set about turning the fortunes of the company around.

Steve Jobs, while launching series of wave making and market-changing products had to battle with cancer for the past 10 years. Several months ago Apple gave notice of his impending resignation as CEO though he was to remain as Apple’s Chairman of Board.

According to a statement issued by Jobs’ family the much respected CEO died peacefully surrounded by his family members.

Apple’s Board of Directors issued a statement which read partly thus,”Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

Nigerian Breweries Plc has acquired Sona Systems Associates Business Management Limited and Life Breweries Company Limited.

Sona Systems has two breweries in Ota Ogun State and Kaduna, while Life Breweries is based in Onitsha, Anambra State.

According to Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc Mr. Nicolaas Vervelde:

…alternative to acquiring the breweries to meeting growing demand, was building a new brewery, which he said, would have taken a period of not less than 24 months.
“The acquisition is therefore, a good business decision. Advantages of the Sona/Life breweries acquisition means immediate capacity to meet growing demands, expands our geographical coverage, reduces delivery cost and enhances economies of scale.

Good Move but,
This acquisition will surely strengthen and expand the operations of NB Plc. But looking it from consumers perspective, it may lead to some kind of monopoly in the breweries industry Sona and Life being among the major competitors to Nigerian Breweries. This leaves SABmiller and Guinness Nigeria Plc as the only major competitors to Nigerian Breweries.

Performance:
Nigerian Breweries posted a turnover of N185.862 billion for the year ended December 31, 2010, up from N164.206 billion in 2009. Profit before tax rose from N41.399 billion to N44.88 billion while profit after tax stood at N30.332 billion, compared with the N27.91 billion in 2009. Shareholders received a total dividend of N2.10 for the 2010 financial year.

Things are already looking up for the Nigerian Breweries going by its half year results ended June 30, 2011. The company reported a profit before tax of N27.6 billion up from N23.3 billion, while profit after tax stood at N18.7 billion compared with N15.9 billion posted in the corresponding period of 2010.

Nigerian Breweries shareholders will surely be smiling, these recent development will surely strengthen its market value. I believe it is a good time to buy in if you have not done so.

Basically three companies are currently battling for control of the beer industry in Nigeria: Heineken, SABMiller and Diageo. With all companies having subsidiaries in Nigeria, the quest for domination got fiercer this year.

In its bid to tap into a $3 billion (N450.9 billion) informal market SABMiller, South Africa’s world brewing giant, had in 2009, bought Pabod Breweries, Port Harcourt, where it now owns 57 percent shares; Voltic Nigeria Limited (Voltic produces tablewater), Lagos, owning 80 percent of the company, and Standard Breweries in Ibadan.

Heineken in response bought Sona, IBBI, Benue, Life and Champion breweries earlier this year and have controlling interests in Nigerian Breweries and Consolidated Breweries.
Heineken’s purchase of Sona Group’s Sona Breweries Plc, Sango Ota, Ogun State; International Beer & Beverages Ind. Ltd., Kaduna State; Champion Breweries Plc, Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State; Life Breweries Co. Before Now Nairaland was the most popular and trafficked site in Nigeria owned by a Nigerian (Seun) according to alexa. However over the past few months things have changed, Nairaland has lost its grip and is now trailing Vanguard News website. Though alexa ranking is largely incorrect, any frequent Nairaland user would know the site is no longer as before in terms of volume of interaction and comments.

Good question. Most people confuse revenue with profits. Making N30,000 daily from a business doesn't necessarily translate to financial success. What is the mark up? That's the question. Do you have power supply from PHCN all day. What's the cost of your internet connectivity? What of rent? System repair costs? Taxes and revenues charges from state and local governments? Cost of ink refilling for printers and photocopier etc

When you put all this into account you'll find out how much your cafe really makes.

Still I must say, 30,000 to 40,000 is pretty impressive for a cyber cafe (talking from experience)

I think it may no longer be a good business to go into.

For the past three months the social media world has been shaken with the launch of Google’s social project Google Plus (G+), though the media hype has died down a bit, the online social giant Facebook is still panicking and looking over its shoulder.

Within Last week and early this week Facebook has made so much changes on their site, these changes are purely done because of Google plus. Is Facebook trying to catch up or trying to stay ahead?

Mark Zuckerberg may be spurred by reactions online to believe that having G+ features replicated on Facebook will help keep people from migrating to G+ but isn’t it same thing Myspace did and pissed of its users.

A social site is not where you make wholistic changes without consulting users and expect them not to revolt especially when there is an alternative. A clear indication that majority of Facebook users are not happy with some of the changes is demonstrated by a poll taken by Mashable here

Myspace helped send its users to Facebook by trying to copy facebook features and pattern, is facebook not doing same mistake again by copying Google Plus? Only time will tell,

Step One: Determine (if you don’t have that already) the business name you want to register. Make it as clear and straight forward as possible to help your customers easily remember it.

Step Two: Locate the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) office in your city (CAC has offices in many capital cities across the country) and file a business name. Search form costs not more than N500. After filling and submitting the form you will have to wait for about 1 to 2 weeks to know if the name you filed is available (it shouldn’t take as long as that but in Nigeria, sometimes, things are like that)

If the name you filled is unavailable you may have to fill another one. If the result shows that your business name is available you can proceed to the third step.

Step Three: Ask for the business name registration file. Pay the required charges at designed payment points (always ask an official at the CAC office)

Step Four:Fill the forms (ask questions where you are confused) and return. Make sure to collect receipt/proof of payment.

Step Five: Check back a week or two later and pick up your business name certification.

Note: You don’t need a lawyer to register your business unless you have a couple of thousands more to pay him for his services,
