He said this while speaking at The Bullion Lecture 2018 which has as theme “The wealth of Nations and imperative of economic transformation”. Kingsley who said overcoming poverty is the secret of wealthy nations, however, said that the secret of wealth and poverty lies in the mind. A former deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN who is also vying for the post of presidency in the coming 2019 presidential election, Mr Kingsley Moghalu said on Wednesday that Nigeria has become the poverty capital of the world. The former deputy governor of CBN also used the opportunity to seek the support of Nigerians for his presidential ambition, promising to ensure Nigeria’s economy is innovation driven economy if he is elected. Moghalu claimed that Nigerians do not have leaders that they only have politicians who are very good at playing the games that help them to corner power. He concluded his session by saying that the secret of the wealth of a nation lies in their economic philosophies and their political economy. He also said that the link between invention and commercialization is broken in Nigeria, noting that though the country has a policy for technology development, it does not have a policy for commercialization, promising to correct this if elected. Speaking about the next election, he said that his team is determined, to create a unity by building on the strength of our dynamics and diversity and also he promised to build a nation anchored on justice, equity and the rule of law. http://saharareporters.com/2018/03/21/nigeria-now-poverty-capital-world-former-deputy-gov-central-bank mynd44 |
Former vice president Namadi Sambo was summoned to brief President Muhammadu Buhari on some issues related to power and transport sectors. A source told Daily Nigerian on Tuesday night that Sambo was at the Presidential Villa at the instance of the president, against speculations that he sought audience to see the president. “Sambo was the chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, alternate chairman of Presidential Action Committee on Power”, the source said. “He also coordinated a number of committees related to power sector reform and transportation. You may recall that Namadi Sambo had briefed Osinbajo on similar issues last year. “President Buhari is keen on attaining the 10,000mw target in the next three years, and he wanted to take some key decisions in the power and transport sector. “The president also takes the issue of rail transport serious. Since he is not derailing from the previous administration’s roadmap, he sought to hear from Namadi Sambo before taking the decisions,” he added. The meeting, which was held inside the President’s office, lasted about 25 minutes. Sambo was former President Goodluck Jonathan’s deputy. He arrived the Presidential Villa at about 12:00noon and left the premises at about 12.30pm. “It was a private meeting,” Sambo told State House correspondents as he approached his waiting car. http://dailypost.ng/2018/03/21/details-ex-vp-sambos-meeting-buhari-emerge/ lalasticlala |
The former minister, who claimed he is not a politician, vowed to continue to air his views on governance in the country. Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has threatened to unleash his ‘bullets and sword’ on any politician who lies to the people. He voiced his anger via a tweet late Monday night. According to him, “Any leader that tells lies or talks rubbish, whether he be in govt. or opposition, in PDP or APC or is friend or foe is not safe from my bullets or my sword. I am not a politician: I am the voice of the voiceless. I put truth and accountability to God before friendship or party.” Fani-Kayode, though, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been very vocal against the leadership style of President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. He recently came hard on the president for speaking Hausa while addressing the students of the Federal Government School in Dapchi, Yobe State. http://dailypost.ng/2018/03/20/fani-kayode-threatens-nigerian-leaders-bullets-swords/ lalasticlala |

Leader of the Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, and founder of the Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike yesterday claimed that Nigeria would break into six different republics before 2023. According to him, the present ‘pigeonholed six geo-political zones of the country’, namely South-East, South-South, South-West, North-Central, North-East and North-West, would metamorphose into the six republics, with South-East becoming the long agitated New Biafra, while South-South becomes Niger-Delta Republic, just as South-West and North-Central become Oduduwa and Middle-Belt Republics respectively, leaving North-East and North-West as Arewa Republic. In a statement issued yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra state, shortly after BIM’s Anambra South Zonal meeting held at Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of the state, Uwazuruike who was represented by a member of Biafra Elders–in-council, Mazi Chris Mocha, observed that “the obvious lack of trust in the relationship or union between the northern and southern Nigeria is too inexplicable that Nigerians cannot continue to co-exist as one nation.” Uwazuruike contended that “the faulty amalgamation of the northern and southern Nigeria in 1914 which expired since January 2014, also made it imperative that the country must surely break up in the near future, based on Biafran constitution which provided that any section of the country that is dissatisfied with the union will be at liberty to secede.” He therefore urged Biafra leaders “to ensure that the federation is run in such a way that the citizens would be happy at all times and willing to belong to Biafra without being forced to do so.” He insisted that “it was only in a corrupt country like Nigeria where illegality thrives that citizens are forced to live together and always show allegiance to the state”, adding, “we do not deserve Biafra if the emerging republic cannot be better than Nigeria.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/03/20/nigeria-will-break-six-republics-2023-uwazuruike/ lalasticlala

Africa’s only remaining female president Ameenah Gurib-Fakim of Mauritius has resigned, over a credit card scandal, according to her lawyer. The move came after Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth accused her of backpedalling on a promise to quit amid allegations of misconduct and threatening unspecified actions if she did not step down. The dispute between the two leaders has ratcheted up uncertainty on the Indian Ocean island, which has been politically and economically stable since it gained independence from Britain in 1968. The World Bank ranks the country as the easiest place to do business in Africa. Gurib-Fakim, the country’s first female head of state, on Wednesday denied having any plans to resign and said she was prepared to go to court over allegations she spent money from a charity on a shopping trip. That was just days after Jugnauth said Gurib-Fakim told him during a meeting at State House she planned to step down. “I am shocked – shocked is not a strong enough word,” Jugnauth told reporters on Thursday in the capital, Port Louis, in a briefing broadcast by Radio Plus. “It’s an attitude which is damaging to the office of the presidency. It’s a behaviour which does not honour our republic.” Gurib-Fakim said she “inadvertently” used a payment card issued to her by the Planet Earth Institute in 2016 that was identical to a bank card she already had. After telling the London-based charity she’d used their card for about US$27,000 of “out-of-pocket expenses”, she immediately reimbursed the institute in addition to other expenses incurred on a PEI trip. “The clash makes a big dent to the reputation of our country as a business-friendly and well-managed economy,” said Dan Maraye, a former governor of the Bank of Mauritius and now an independent political analyst. “Political uncertainty destroys economic development and stability. It brings the whole system to a crashing halt until the matter is cleared.” Ameenah Gurib-Fakim is a biodiversity scientist. She became president of the island nation in 2015. http://saharareporters.com/2018/03/17/ameenat-gurib-fakim-mauritius-president-resigns Mynd44 |

The trial of a former Chairman, DAAR Communications Plc, Raymond Dokpesi, continued on Friday, March 9, 2018 before Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court, sitting in Maitama, Abuja, with Abubakar Aliyu Madaki, the twelfth prosecution witness (PW12), revealing how the defendant received funds from the Office of National Security Adviser, under the leadership of Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), for services not rendered. Under cross-examination by Kanu Agabi, SAN, counsel for Dokpesi, the EFCC operative, stressed that the defendant “did not do any contract but was paid”. “This was what led to his prosecution, and the funds involved is N2.120 billion, which went out from the national security account,” he said. Raymond Dokpesi Madaki, who told the court that he never at anytime saw the budget of the NSA as he was not asked to investigate it, noted that funds which in the account,“were there for purposes and some of the beneficiaries of the said money, did genuine contracts and got paid”. “Dokpesi did not do any contract, but was paid,” he added. He said: “The funds were found in his account and there was no reason for it. No services rendered. The funds have a purpose. Other beneficiaries did genuine contracts and got paid, but the two defendants (Dokpesi and DAAR Investment and Holdings Ltd) here did not do any contract to be paid for”. Dokpesi alongside DAAR Investment and Holdings Ltd, owners of African Independent Television, AIT, and Raypower are being prosecuted by the EFCC, on a six-count charge bordering on alleged procurement fraud and breach of public trust. He is alleged to have received N2.1billion from the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, between October 2014 and March 2015, which was used for the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential media campaign. Justice Tsoho, thereafter adjourned to April 13, 2018 for “continuation of cross-examination”. This put to rest the controversy trailing the project. The United Nations Education and Scientific Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has said it did not contribute any fund to the repair of Olaiya-Ita Olokan Road, which leads to Osun Groove in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. Clarifying the claims that the international organisation contributed over 70 per cent of the fund for the 2.8 kilometre road, UNESCO’s Communication Consultant (Regional Office) Mr Olusola Macaulay said there was no time the organisation was approached by the Osun State government to fund the road project. Besides, he said UNESCO is not currently funding any project in the state. Macaulay, who spoke with our reporter on telephone, said: “I can confirm to you that UNESCO did not contribute any fund to the construction of the road that leads to Osun Grove. And there was no time the Osun State government or its agencies approached UNESCO to support the project or contribute anything to it. We didn’t pay 70 per cent or any other fraction to the project, as being peddled. As I speak to you,we have no project we are undertaking in Osun State.” UNESCO’s clarification followed a statement credited to former Osun State Deputy Governor Iyiola Omisore that the international organisation paid over 70 per cent of the amount appropriated for the reconstruction of the road. Also, Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, described Omisore’s claim as a falsehood. The governor said the resources invested in the project were sourced from Omoluabi Infrastructure Conservation Fund. He said: “UNESCO is not in any way involved in the finance of the project at all. It becomes imperative to state that rather than provide funds for the road, UNESCO requested the government to re-work and change the course of the road, which leads to Osun Groove, to retain its World Heritage Site status. “It is a known fact that UNESCO, as an organisation, does not give money for any counterpart project funding. Rather, such is given in kind and not in cash, as the former deputy governor (Omisore) would want the people to believe. “He should be told in clear terms that getting mischievous is not a good trait that endears an aspirant to the electorate, while lying so blatantly makes one to be rejected by God. The former deputy governor should desist from deliberate efforts at misinforming the people of the state and face his disgraceful and ignoble charges with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “The Osun State government challenges Omisore or any of his cohorts to substantiate their claims with relevant documents to the effect that the project was funded by UNESCO, as they unscrupulously claim.” http://thenationonlineng.net/unesco-no-fund-committed-osun-road/ lalasticlala |

Gbenga Odogun, Lokoja There was confusion in Kogi State on Sunday as Governor Yahaya Bello ordered the dissolution of his cabinet but quickly reversed the order just before the news filtered out. Sources close to the State Executive Committee meeting held on Sunday said the governor had ordered all commissioners and all the 21 local government administrators to hand over keys to their official cars to the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Folasade Arike Ayoade. Sources close to the cabinet meeting held behind closed door on Sunday told our correspondent that the dissolution might not be unconnected with the arms importation last Thursday. The governor was said to be furious with his cabinet members whom he accused of leaking the information about the arms importation. However, just 10 minutes after the pronouncement, the Governor reversed his order, demanding “better performance and better relationship” with the state government. Responding to inquiry about the development, the Director General, media and publicity to the Governor, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed that the governor had reversed his order of dissolution and asked them to return to their position. Our correspondent also gathered that the reversal might be at the instance of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Edward Onoja, who reportedly prevailed on Bello not to toe that line. Onoja, said to be a very powerful and influential member of the governor s kitchen cabinet, was quoted as arguing against the dissolution, especially as the governor would need them for the realisation of his s 2019 re-election bid. “He told the governor that it would be difficult to build a new set of loyalists that will be used for campaign,” our source said. http://punchng.com/breaking-bello-sacks-cabinet-reconstitutes-same-immediately/ lalasticlala |

Simon Utebor, Yenagoa The Deputy President of the Senate, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, has denied calling for military intervention in the country, saying that he was quoted out of context. Ekweremadu made the denial on Saturday at the Diepreye Alaimieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Onopa, Yenagoa, when Governor Seriake Dickson hosted him and executive members of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Africa Region) to a dinner. The deputy Senate President, who maintained that his comments on the floor of the Senate were misconstrued, insisted that he would never make derogatory statements against the Nigerian military, which he noted remains one of the best fighting forces on the continent. He stressed that statements made by lawmakers in the course of their duty should be situated within the proper context before any form of reaction. However, the military, through a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen John Agim, had argued that Ekweremadu’s comments “in the true sense, has the capacity to denigrate the Nigerian military in every ramification, including its loyalty to the President and Commander in-Chief of the Armed Forces and the confidence of the public to defend Nigeria’s democracy.” But Ekweremadu noted that parliamentarians had a duty to continue to defend democracy in the country, arguing that the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is the parliament, which should, ordinarily, provide direction for the sustenance of democracy. He added that his remarks on the floor of the Senate were to caution his colleagues to avoid the mistakes of the past which he said led to the abrupt end of the First Republic. http://punchng.com/i-didnt-call-for-military-intervention-ekweremadu-says-alleges-he-was-misquoted/ lalasticlala |
