By Charles Kumolu & Dirisu Yakubu ABUJA—The Presidency said, Thursday, that President Muhammadu Buhari didn’t deride all Nigerian youths as currently misinterpreted. Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari attends a reception at the closing session of the Commonwealth Business Forum at the Guildhall in central London on April 18, 2018, on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM). The Commonwealth Business Forum will discuss practical ways to enhance trade, showcase investment opportunities and promote sustainable development. / AFP PHOTO But Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; ex-Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, and Nigerian Young Professionals Foum, NYPF, insisted that the President was wrong, saying Nigerian youths are hardworking in whatever vocation they find themselves. Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, who made the clarification, yesterday, said: “At the Commonwealth Business Forum in London on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari gave a keynote address on Making Business Easier Between Commonwealth Countries. The presentation was followed by a discussion, and question and answer session. “Responding to a question, President Buhari had cause to talk about some Nigerian youths, and he said ‘We have a very young population; our population is estimated conservatively to be 180 million. More than 60 per cent of the population is below the age of 30. A lot of them have not been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria has been an oil producing country, therefore they should sit and do nothing and get housing, healthcare and education free.’ “Typical of their stock-in trade, manipulators and twisters of statements of Mr President, who lie in wait to make mischief, interpreted the comment to mean that President Buhari had taken all Nigerian youths to the cleaners. “But elementary English recognises a wide gulf between ‘a lot of’ and the word ‘all.’ How can ‘a lot of them,” suddenly transmogrify to mean ‘all of them?’ Mischievous and unconscionable. “There is no way President Buhari, father of the Nigerian nation in every sense of the word, who equally has biological children of his own in the youths age bracket, pass a vote of no confidence on all youths. “”It can only exist in the imagination of those who play what the President has described as ‘irresponsible politics’ with everything. President Buhari has always applauded and celebrated Nigerian youths who excel in different areas of endeavour, from sports, to academia, and other realms. And he will continue to do so, because he values the youths, and knows that they are the fulcrum on which the future of the country rests. ‘’Indeed, every country has its share of idle population, and it is the bounden duty of government at all levels to create an enabling environment for them to actualize their potentials. That is what President Buhari is committed to doing.” PDP, Atiku, Fani-Kayode, Omokri, others kick Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, Femi Fani-Kayode, and Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, yesterday, replied President Buhari, saying Nigerian youths were hardworking in whatever vocation they found themselves. PDP in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, described as shocking, the comment by the President, noting that his remark brought the nation low in the eyes of the international community. According to the statement, “how can President Buhari describe Nigerian youths as lazy, when they have proven, without doubt, to be one of the most industrious sets of individuals across the world? “Nigerians find it extremely shocking that President Buhari could make such a false, derogatory and unpatriotic comment against our citizens at a time the nation was looking up to him to properly present our potentials to the global business community.” It’s shameful—Atiku In his reaction, Atiku Abubakar described the President’s statement as shameful. Atiku, in a status update on his Facebook wall, yesterday, described Nigerian youths as enterprising and the backbone of the nation’s success. He said: “I will never refer to Nigeria’s youths as people who sit and do nothing. They are hardworking. I should know, I have thousands of youths working for me all over the country who have been the backbone to our success. “I have always said oil is not Nigeria’s greatest asset. Our greatest asset is our youths, who created Nollywood out of nothing and an entertainment industry that is second to none in Africa. “Our youths are charting new frontiers; creating a huge technology industry on their own. Their entrepreneurial spirit, work ethic, and creative abilities are things of pride and should be applauded, encouraged and nurtured.” On his part, Fani-Kayode questioned the rationale for the President’s remark about his own people, saying: “What type of leader takes pleasure in slandering, shaming, denigrating and humiliating his own people before the world; tells foreigners that his own children are lazy and unproductive?” Also expressing dismay at the President’s uncomplimentary remark, former aide of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, queried: “How can you in one breath say that your country’s youths are lazy and don’t want to work and in the next, you appeal to foreign investors to come and invest in Nigeria?” In its reaction, NYPF, which spoke through its chairman, Moses Siasia, asked President Buhari to apologise to Nigerian youths. “From that statement, it is obvious that the President is unaware that those who contribute up to eighty percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product GDP through Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, SMEs, are youths. The President also ought to know that the youths in sports and entertainment industry are the ones bringing glory to our country and not his own generation. “The youths in our entertainment industry are also creating enormous employment for other young people without any support from the government. ‘’Those winning medals for our country are youths and not old men. We have the likes of Asisat Oshoala, 2017 African Women Player of the Year; Patience Okon George, Nigerian best female quarter liner; Blessing Okogbare, and Victor Moses, among others.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/04/buhari-didnt-deride-nigerian-youths-presidency/ lalasticlala |
Pro-Biafra protesters on Thursday stormed the Commonwealth House in London. The protest took place as President Muhammadu Buhari met with Queen Elizabeth II and other leaders of Commonwealth countries. The protesters were seen carrying placards demanding the whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and a peaceful referendum. Some of the protesters were seen raising placards with various inscriptions that bore their agitations. “A call for peaceful Biafra referendum is not a call for genocide against Biafrans,” one placard read. The whereabouts of Mr. Kanu, who is facing a fresh three-count charge of treasonable felony, remains unknown. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/265593-biafra-supporters-protest-against-buhari-in-london.html Lalasticlala |
BENIN—GOVERNOR Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said that it was no longer fashionable for Nigerians to continue to embark on medical tourism abroad, asserting that government at all levels must provide access to quality and affordable healthcare services for Nigerians. The governor disclosed that it was in the pursuit of quality healthcare services that his administration concluded plans to begin the construction of 20 technology-driven Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, across the state before the end of the month. Speaking when he received board members of Lily Hospital, Warri and Benin centres, led by the Acting Chairman, Dr. Ovadje Oviemo, on a courtesy visit to the governor at Government House Benin City, he noted: “It is no longer fashionable for Nigerians to continue to travel abroad for medical treatment. Therefore, it is important for government to provide access to quality and affordable healthcare services for the people in the country. “As a government, our strategy is to use the state Health Insurance Scheme to provide access to quality and affordable healthcare for Edo people. We are working with healthcare providers and consultants to re-think the state healthcare system to complement other economic development initiatives. “This month, the state government will roll out the first 20 primary healthcare centres. The plan is to ensure equitable distribution of healthcare centres across the state in the next 20 to 30 months. With this, we will be certain that at least one primary healthcare centre is sited in each ward across the state. We intend to construct between 200 to 250 PHCs in the state.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/04/nigerians-no-longer-need-seek-medical-treatment-abroad-obaseki/ lalasticlala |
The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB) has asked all Senators to return to their constituencies with immediate effect. It declared that Nigerian Senators have lost the mandate of representing their people. The pro-Biafar group spoke on Wednesday, in reaction to the invasion of the Upper Legislative Chamber earlier on Wednesday, during which the Mace was snatched by thugs, during which the mace was stolen. MASSOB spoke through Comrade Edeson Samuel, its National Director Of Information. The Comrade Uchenna Madu-led group said it was delighted over the development in the National Assembly. While saying that it has been vindicated by the incident, MASSOB said “as the foremost pro-Biafra Movement we will still maintain non-violence as our watchword; we do not support anarchy or any abnormal behavior. “But political, economical, religious, academicals and social events in Nigeria under President Buhari administration has shown that Biafra actualization and restoration, MASSOB and other pro Biafra groups are demanding has been proven to be more legitimate. “The unconstitutional and forceful taking of the mace from red chamber by thugs has shown that Nigeria is a failed and irreparable state that can never stand. Imagine a higher chamber where security agents are supposed to be at alert, but reverse was the case.” It added that “taking of the symbol of authority means that the government of Nigeria has failed. Every senator should return to his constituency because there is no longer constitutional powers backing them. “It has also shown that the government of President buhari has collapsed since thugs can invade the National Assembly and make away with the symbol of authority without any resistance from the security agents. “MASSOB laments what will be the faith of a common citizen in the street. MASSOB is also in full support of the statement credited to former chief of army staff, General T.Y Danjuma, where he urged the people of Middle Belt, Westerners and Biafrans to defend themselves. “It is obvious that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot provide security for the citizens of this political entity called Nigeria. It’s a pity that the senators of Nigeria have also failed their people. “MASSOB is calling on the people of Middle Belt to rise and defend themselves from Fulani’s ethnic cleansing organized and sponsored by President Buhari and his APC-led government. “The People of Middle Belt should know that over 70% of security agents in Nigeria are Hausa Fulanis and they cannot protect you from any attack being carried out by their kinsmen.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/04/18/missing-mace-senators-return-home-massob/ Lalasticlala |

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has given Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) two months to identify and apprehend herdsmen behind killings in Nigeria. He gave the order during the formal swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected executives of MACBAN in Sokoto, on Tuesday. The monarch also charged the leadership of MACBAN to find out whether Fulani herdsmen are actually responsible for the killings across the country or not. The Sultan lamented the labelling of Fulanis as the killer herdsmen. According to Abubakar, “To you the newly elected leadership of MACBAN, I want to remind you that your task is a very challenging one. Don’t forget that Fulanis are also being killed in Nigeria and no media attention is given to it. “However, we are giving you two months to go round the entire country and find out why Fulanis are accused of being behind the killings. Go and find out who are those Fulanis doing the killings. Also find out if it is other people that are doing the killings and are accusing the Fulanis. Please, we want to get the truth from you within two months. “We are not ashamed to be called Fulanis because Fulanis are not trouble makers. Despite the fact that any wrong doing in Nigeria now is erroneously said to be caused by Fulanis. “We however want people to know that though there might be bad ones amongst the Fulanis, just like there are in every race, that is not enough justification to generalise that all Fulanis are bad.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/04/18/killer-herdsmen-sultan-gives-miyetti-allah-2-month-ultimatum/

PORT HAR-COURT— National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, has said that due to overwhelming challenges, Nigeria still has a long way to go to be able to proactively regulate oil spill response and keep the operating environment safe. Director-General of NOSDRA, Sir Peter Idabor, opened up on this reality yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where the agency and stakeholders ended the 2018 National Oil Spill Contingency Plan and Drills with support from Nigerian Agip Oil Company. According to Idabor, NOSDRA, set up IN 2006, has not been able to catch up with its counterparts in other countries of the world in best practices because of inadequate funds, manpower, equipments and weak legal framework among others. “People are saying that NOSDRA depends on oil operators to carry out its regulation duties. They say we enter their helicopters, boats and use other equipment belonging to operators to inspect or monitor spills, but what can we do really? We don’t have the tools to work. “We are lucky we have not been faced by a large scale spill after the Bonga spill. We are getting warnings that some facilities around Cotonou could erupt. If they erupt, what do we do? We need good offices, equipment and personnel require training and retraining,” he lamented. With oil found in Lagos and intensified prospects in the North and other areas outside the Niger Delta, Idabor said there was greater urgency to address the challenges confronting the industry regulator to effectively measure up to the dynamics of the industry. He said, “We need amendment to the NOSDRA bill which has passed second reading. We found that the current law has a lacuna that allows operators decide which, among different regulators, to go to or honour in the event of emergencies. This shouldn’t be. “Amendment primarily should address increased funding like our counterparts all over the world. We need equipment, helicopters to watch over the operating space. The country should have an equipment stockpile that the industry can access.” “The law should criminalize some misconduct of perpetrators, increase fines. We are not trying to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, but to improve lives. We want to train and retrain staffs with specialized training. “Some oil firms are capable to assisting with training. We don’t have the funds to get all the capacity. That’s why you see us entering their helicopter or use operators equipment sometimes when we should have and depend on our own." https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/04/nigeria-lags-behind-response-oil-spill-nosdra/ LALASTICLALA |

Olufemi Atoyebi, Ibadan The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said that the education sector is facing serious challenges under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. The Chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan chapter, Dr Deji Omole, said this on Monday. Omole noted that failure on the part of the Federal Government to vote enough fund for education had put the sector in a precarious position. He said the situation had also led to a crisis of confrontation between university authorities and students in some parts of the country. He said, “It will be difficult to have a citizen that will love this country in the future, if the current trend of abandoning the poor while taking care of the rich continues. “While each senator is paid N13.5m as running costs per month, the same Senate appropriated a paltry sum of N66m for capital projects for the University of Ibadan, which has a student population of about 30,000. This can only happen in a country where the ruling class lacks vision like Nigeria. “The same government refuses to drop a kobo for the revitalisation of public universities. Now many children of the masses are denied access because universities cannot admit beyond what the dilapidated infrastructure can take. Yet their parents cannot afford private universities. The Federal Government owes about N800bn revitalisation funds to public varsities as contained in the agreements with ASUU.” The UI ASUU chairman warned that the union would strongly oppose the FG’s plan to force children of the masses out of school because of unwarranted dues charged by universities to maintain their facilities. “The United States, which all elite turn to for the funding of their public, knows the negative implication of having a growing pool of illiterates as we have in Nigeria. Buhari government has paid lip service to public education but prefers to pacify militants and terrorists,” he added. https://punchng.com/fg-killing-education-sector-in-nigeria/ lalasticlala |
President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria will meet Donald Trump in Washington on April 30 to discuss issues including “fighting terrorism” and economic growth, the White House announced Sunday. Buhari and Trump “President Trump looks forward to discussing ways to enhance our strategic partnership and advance our shared priorities: promoting economic growth and reforms, fighting terrorism and other threats to peace and security, and building on Nigeria’s role as a democratic leader in the region,” the White House said in a statement. “The relationship of the United States with Nigeria is deep and strong, and Nigeria’s economic growth, security, and leadership in Africa will advance our mutual prosperity.” Nigeria, West Africa’s largest economy, is among the countries combatting Islamist extremism with help from the United States. The nation is battling an array of security threats across its territory, from Boko Haram jihadists in the northeast to oil militants in the south. The announcement of the visit comes one day after the fourth anniversary of the Chibok schoolgirls abduction, which saw Boko Haram kidnap 276 girls. Fifty-seven escaped in the immediate aftermath and four years on, 112 are still being held — a global symbol of the Islamist insurgency that has devastated the region. The Nigerian president’s White House visit also follows a scandal that erupted in January when Trump allegedly branded African nations “shithole countries." The reported remark triggered global outrage and forced the US president to pen a letter reaffirming his commitment to the continent. Nigeria was among the countries included on Trump’s ex-secretary of state Rex Tillerson’s Africa tour last month — though the former Texas oilman truncated the trip just before the US president brutally sacked him. Before returning to Washington, Tillerson had notably promised Nigeria’s support ranging from equipment to intelligence to helping secure the swift release of kidnapped schoolgirls. – ‘Baba Go Slow’ – Buhari, a 75-year-old former general and one-time military head of state, announced earlier this month he would seek re-election next year — a move that laid to rest months of speculation over his health. Nicknamed “Baba Go Slow” for his lethargic pace in office, Buhari spent months in London last year seeking medical treatment for an undisclosed illness. If nominated, he faces the Herculean task of convincing Nigerians he is the best candidate to steer the country out of its worst recession in 25 years, after implementing a series of unorthodox policies blamed for worsening the economic crisis. He was voted into power in 2015 on a platform vowing to crack down on endemic graft and stamp out Boko Haram. Boko Haram still stages deadly attacks on military and civilian targets despite Buhari’s insistence that the group is “technically” defeated. In February, the Islamists embarrassed the government by driving unopposed into the northeastern town of Dapchi and kidnapping over 100 schoolgirls. Of the 111 who were kidnapped, 105 were returned by the jihadists following a ceasefire agreement with the government. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/04/trump-invites-buhari-washington/ lalasticlala |

A former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh has explained why he asked Nigerians to stone the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government if he failed to perform. Momoh had during the build up to the 2015 general elections called on Nigerians to stone the APC government if they don’t leave up to expectations. Speaking with The Sun, the former minister said Nigerians were already stoning the president despite his monumental achievements. He said, “We are in a democracy. As Minister of Information, I gave Nigerians information; one, to satisfy your need for information; secondly, to give you the information to do what you like to do with it. “So, people who are saying that APC has done nothing have a right through the information they have to achieve the aims they want, but that does not reduce from the fact that objectively, APC has done something. “Whatever happens, I said stone us if we don’t perform, but some people are stoning us, not that we didn’t perform, but because they are in opposition and cannot appreciate that we are preforming. In the area of security, nobody would say that we have not tried. “Nobody will say that the challenges we have in the Northeast, Middle Belt, South-south, Southeast, Southwest and even in the Northwest, are not being attended to. In the area of agriculture, nobody can say that we have not attended to eating what we grow, and growing what we want to eat. We came out of recession. There are a lot of things we have done.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/04/14/asked-nigerians-stone-buhari-momoh/ lalasticlala |

A presidential aspirant in the 2019 general elections and convener of #Take Nigeria Back Movement, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, has attributed the challenges as well as failures being recorded on the various spheres of Nigeria’s national life to lack of capacity and character by the country’s past and current leaders. Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters spoke in Abuja during a townhall meeting with Nigerians on Tuesday night. The presidential aspirant who has been going around the country to meet the citizens at the grassroots in actualisation of his presidential ambition, said the present crop of Nigerian leaders cannot take the country out of its economic and political logjam because the level of their thinking is still at the ‘analogue’ level. While commenting on murderous activities of criminal herdsmen, Sowore stressed that the Fulani bandits became audacious simply because they have somebody at the helms of affairs who is enabling their criminal activities with the support of middle cadre criminal security agents. " The only way Nigeria can get out this circle is to get rid of this man because as you are voting him out you are also voting out his lieutenants and cabal," he noted. On restructuring, Sowore pointed out that he did not believe the ‘old men’ who have been shouting restructuring mean well for Nigeria. He cited the example of Chief Olu Falae who collected N100million from former President Goodluck Jonathan to ‘restructure’ his pocket during the campaign for 2015 general elections. He stressed that there is need to address the energy sector particularly electricity which, according to him, must be given the deserved priority. Sowore also told the audience that Nigeria biggest resource is not oil. In his words " Nigeria biggest resource is not oil, especially in this knowledge base global economy. It is the Nigerian brain and Nigerians that I have known have been operating on their own to survive. You know that they are just waiting to be unleashed on the world with their intellect and capacity for hard work " He promised to have an energy mix forum as soon as he is voted into power, promising that his government would generate 4,500mw of electricity through solar alone. He said through solar, the country can get 52,000mw that can power universities and its environs at a lesser cost. " It can be done in 90 days. It is just to bring in the materials assemble them and hook them up to the grid," Sowore stated. Sowore assured that the present economic and political logjam being experienced in the country can be reversed through revolutionary politics. He added that there is no need to join any party but to build a movement that would wrestle power from the present crop of politicians and to the advantage of the people. The activist said that there is need to give Nigerian workers living wage instead of minimum wage, adding that no worker can live on N18, 000. He revealed that 21% of the federal workforce are ghost workers. "We saw the police, 80, 000 policemen did not exist and you take that out and the rest of them are guiding the VIPs and their girlfriends. All these have to change immediately," he submitted. "One thing I told their people when they called after I arrived Abuja that I should be careful and I told them that there is nothing to be careful about because you are talking to the President of Nigeria come 2019. I refused to ask for police protection because I am being protected by the people of Nigeria " Co-Convener #BringBackOurGirls, Aisha Yesufu, was among the speakers at the event. http://saharareporters.com/2018/04/11/current-leaders-lack-capacity-move-nigeria-forward-says-sowore lalasticlala |

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he does not envision a situation where youths below 35 years would dominate political space in Nigeria. He spoke while receiving the New Nigeria 2019, NN-2019 group and the Young Professionals of Nigeria, YPN, led by Chima Nwafor and Moses Siasia, in Yenogoa, the Bayelsa State capital. He lamented that youths were being used for social vices like “cultism, kidnapping, hired killers.” Jonathan, however, encouraged youths to play key roles in governance. According to Jonathan, “I am not envisioning a government that every actor will be below thirty-five years old, but I share the aspiration of those who want young people to be fully involved in governance. “I remember when Alfred Diette Spiff was the military governor of the then old Rivers State, most of the members of his cabinet were older than him and even referred to him as ‘my son,’ but together they achieved much in infrastructure and human development.” “Before I leave, let me charge the young people in two areas: the young must reform the old for us to grow positively. At the same time most of the challenges we are having in the society; it is not that the young people created them, but they are being used negatively. We talk about cultism, hired killers, terror, kidnapping, the elderly cannot enter the bush to go and stay for days. “A group like yours constituting of CEOs, how do you create platforms to re-orientate the thinking of our young peopl?. I am glad that you mentioned setting up similar bodies, across the country. “At least, even if you start from the universities and secondary schools, to change the mindset of the youths. Youth movements like Boys Scout, Boys Brigade and Girls Guide, developed from this kind of thinking. “The growth of society should not be marked by flashy cars, sky scrapers and beautiful roads but by the people, the way they think and the way they do things.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/04/11/youths-35-years-may-not-dominate-nigerias-political-space-jonathan/ Lalasticlala |

Thomas, in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja, said this while expressing displeasure on why a Nigerian show was being held in South Africa. NAN reports that the BBNaija, which was introduced in 2006, is a special Nigerian version of the continental show Big Brother Africa. The 2018 edition is its second consecutive running year, as it had previously suffered a 10-year hiatus after holding its first edition in 2006. Thomas said: “If it is Big Brother Africa, they can host that anywhere; but the one for Nigeria should be hosted in Nigeria. “Nigeria has what it takes to host the show; after all, there are many multinational/telecommunication companies hitherto operating hitch-free in the country. “If the organisers are talking about lack of available infrastructure as an excuse, then how is MTN operating successfully 24/7 in this same country? “If MTN, a similar South African company, has been surviving in this country, then I don’t think anybody has an excuse for not hosting BBNaija in Nigeria. “They are making a lot of money from Nigerians here, so, we want them to host it here.” On the criticism in some quarters that the show is not healthy for young viewers, Thomas said it was the responsibility of parents to check what their children watch. He said the programme was rated 18+, adding, “a couple of the scenes are adult content and that is where parental guidance comes in. “Parents can always block the watching of some scenes within a particular period or in totality. “It is not government’s responsibility to assume the parental roles of moral upbringing of children in their homes,’’ he said.
