The Aba story has taken a dangerous twist in the last three weeks with the close down of the city literally. In the recent months and owing to the dangerous frequency of kidnaps and robberies, banks have been off and on in service.
Today, the city is where absurdities, abomination and oddities have been elevated to everyday life.

A good instance was that of a family that was reportedly besieged at their home off Port Harcourt Road during which two little boys were ordered at gunpoint to have intimacy with their mother. As the first boy bluntly refused, he was shot dead in the presence of the mother. The mother had to prevail on the second boy to do the bidding of the hoodlums as she never wanted him dead.

“That is the level we operate at Aba and nobody comes to our aid. We are prisoners and captives in a city that has neither government nor defenders,” a distraught resident lamented.
Often times, banks close huriedly as robbers allegedly write them of their plans to attack. Because they don’t have adequate security to counter them, they simply stay off work to avoid the worst scenario.

A later bizarre incident was when hospitals in the city closed down to protest the laxity of the government in containing the kidnap rave. A doctor was kidnapped in Aba, amnd his family made to part with N30 million as ransom to ensure his release. But the story was that the doctor was later killed even after the money was paid.

What the situation entails today is that Aba is unhygienic. Aba is unsafe security wise. And Aba is unhealthy and unfit for residents who are ill as there are no hospitals to go and no medics to take care of the sick.
Daily Sun gathered from a reliable source late last week that the kingpin behind the dastardly acts is known possibly by the law enforcement agents and security operatives and allegedly by the government.

The terror merchant is said to hail from Obehie, a town in the Abia/Rivers State border in the Ukwa Council axis and also resident there. “The people we should complain to know this man too well. He has been their tool in the past and they still keep him in wait for another use”, a source said.
He is known to have been old in his art of terror and has been a tool in the hands of power seekers in the state who he stands in for to execute some clandestine duties that border on intimidation. The man whose name or alias, Daily Sun, withholds is known by even the men in the street in Aba, especially as the person behind the acts that chase people out of their homes.

In the latest move that made the man a prime suspect, one of his terror agents was said to have written a chieftain of the Ariaria Market union to keep some millions of naira as ransom for them or risk kidnap.
As the union chief ran to the officials that should provide him security, he was allegedly turned down and simply told to go back and comply with his attackers’ demand.

Wednesday last week, at about 11am, Daily Sun got a distress phone call from Obehie, a town about 20 kilometres off Port Harcourt, the alleged base of the Abia chief goon that robbers barricaded the road and had a field day for hours operating without let.

“We live in constant agony and fear because anybody and everybody is a victim at all times. We have no place to go and nothing seems to be done”, he further cried.

In another incident, the marauders wrote the traders in Ariaria asking for N50,000 advance ransom on each trader. The money according to the demand was to be contributed in a common pool and kept in wait for them so as to fasten the process of the collection on they day they will call. To this demand, the traders reportedly wrote them in reply that they prefer to re-enact the civil war of 40 years ago or face total extermination than be intimidated to this extent.

The informer who called Daily Sun fretted that: “Our annoyance is that while government would not protect us, it cannot also give us free hand to protect ourselves. This is the kind of situation in the late 90s that forced us to resort to self-help in forming the Bakassi Boys. They condemned us for that, yet, they have not done anything to secure us since they don’t want us to handle it our own way. The insecurity is getting to that same old level and we are still the same Aba people, one day, we will say no and handle it our own way because the government at all levels have failed us.”

Eguavoen remains Eagles coach
September 24, 2010

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have given by far the strongest indication that Austin Eguavoen will be confirmed to qualify the Super Eagles for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Eguavoen has been the Eagles caretaker coach since the exit of former Sweden coach Lars Lagerback in July.

And now head of NFF technical department, James Peters, has disclosed the former international defender will be in charge of the team for the qualifying tournament for Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

“Eguavoen has done well so far and he will see us through the qualifiers for the Nations Cup,” Peters told MTNFootball.com.

The coach has insisted he will not apply for the job after the NFF decided earlier in September to ask for applications from both foreign and local coaches.

This is Eguavoen’s second spell as head of the national team. In 2005, he took over from Christian Chukwu soon after Nigeria were forced to a 1-1 draw by closest rivals Angola in a crucial World Cup qualifier in Kano.

However, a late rally by Nigeria could not stop Angola from qualifying for their first World Cup in Germany.

Eguavoen will then lead the Eagles to finish third at the 2006 Nations Cup in Egypt.

He has thus far led the Eagles to beat Madagascar 2-0 in a Nations Cup qualifier in Calabar after his team fell 2-1 to South Korea in a friendly in August.

He was soon after the 2010 World Cup, where he assisted Lagerback, offered to take over the country’s Olympic team after his teammate from the 1994 World Cup, Samson Siasia, was locked in negotiations with the NFF to take charge of the Eagles.

Officials regard him as matured, while his critics see him as an establishment man, who does not ant to ruffle the feathers so as stay in the good books of his employers.

This week, Nigeria sports minister, Ibrahim Bio, charged the NFF management to appoint a substantive coach immediately after next month’s Nations Cup qualifier against Guinea in Conakry.

PoliticsRent Your Crowd Too-Governor Ikedi Ohakim: by MRMoneyE(op): 2:01am On Sep 24, 2010
FROM Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State Thursday came an advice for those accusing President Goodluck Jonathan of renting the crowd that witnessed his declaration in Abuja on Saturday.

He said any politician who says that the crowed that turned out to support the President was rented should also rent one and see if the effect would be the same.

This was apparently in reaction to a statement credited to Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki that the crowd at the President’s declaration was rented.

Saraki has declared his intention to vie for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While describing the allegation of crowd renting as a political statement, Ohakim said he was sure the President would emerge the PDP’s candidate at the primaries.

Ohakim, who addressed reporters after his meeting with Vice President Namadi Sambo at the Presidential Villa, told Jonathan’s opponents that if indeed the president is capable of renting such a crowd, it shows he has what it takes to pull support for his cause.

Ohakim said: "That is a political statement, saying somebody rented a crowd. I was in the crowd. Was I rented?"

Former Military President and presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2011 elections, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has said the 2011 election will not be a do-or-die affair for him, saying win or lose, life continues.

Babangida spoke in Minna , Niger State on Thursday when a group, “Nigerians in Diaspora (North America and Europe)” visited him at his Uphill mansion to express their support for his presidential ambition. He pointed out that he has a conviction and would play politics of conviction.

“Win or lose, life will continue but I have a conviction and will go into the election with that conviction. I will play politics of conviction.”
The former leader said he expressed the hope that the election would be free, fair and transparent where according to him, each and every vote will count and above all, free from intimidation.

Babangida told the group which was led by one-time Minister of Information, Chief Alex Akinyele that his decision to seek a come back was borne out of his desire to take the country out of its present development challenges, stressing that the time to make genuine contributions to the development of this country is now. “It is now time to make a genuine sacrifice for this country. The time to lay a solid foundation is now for the sake of children of tomorrow because I will not be there in the next 50 years.”

He assured the delegation that he will provide the needed leadership where the young ones will be given the opportunity to make contributions saying, “At the age of 27, I fought for the unity of this country. I have a passion for the country and its development.” He urged Nigerians in the diaspora to believe in the country, according to him, 50 years in the life of the country is nothing because “this is a country that will exist for a thousand years to come.”

He assured them that if elected President in 2011, he would make sure that people’s votes count, stressing that “you can vote and be voted for like it obtains in other countries of the world”. Earlier, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora for IBB 2011, Suleiman Balogun told Babangida that the style of his leadership has been acknowledged by Nigerians in diaspora with a strong belief that his wealth of experience would definitely be needed to move the nation forward again.
The chairman pointed out that Nigerians at home and abroad will never fail to appreciate his eight-years regime which he said was characterized by policy initiatives and fiscal measures as against lip-service most leaders thereafter, had paid to the development of this country.

“It is on record that you achieved a lot in many areas where others had failed. You created 11 more states, brought the government closer to the people by creating about 200 local government areas, reduced road accidents by creating the Federal Road Safety Commission, introduced the civil service reform, the establishment of National Women Commission which is now Ministry of Women Affairs among others”.

Balogun disclosed that as a group that believes so much in the IBB vision, it has privately embarked on several meaningful projects within and outside the country aimed at actualizing the IBB 2011, and these include the creation of an IBB website to project his image and awareness programmes to sensitize the public.

Atiku accuses Jonathan of spending state fund on campaign•Show proof of your allegation – Jonathan

Written by Taiwo Adisa

Friday, 24 September 2010

THE campaign organisation of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday, asked the President Goodluck Jonathan to react to allegations that his campaign organisation has been using government funds to run the campaign.

Atiku, in a statement on Thursday, said it would amount to immorality for the president to claim to have zero tolerance for corruption and refuse to defend allegations that his campaign was utilising public funds for campaign.

But the media arm of President Jonathan Campaign Council, on Thursday, said President Jonathan remained committed to probity, asking the Atiku campaign organi-sation to show proof of the allegation.

“President Jonathan has failed to respond to a critical and serious allegation made by a major and reputable socio-cultural group in the country, The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), that he is using public resources to fund his lavish campaign engagements,” Atiku campaign organisation had alleged.

But President Jonathan, through the Head Media Department of his Campaign Organisation, Mr Sully Abu, said Atiku was merely celebrating rumour.

In a statement on Thursday, the president’s campaign organisation said Atiku could not prove the allegations he was celebrating.

The truth is that Goodluck Jonathan is a dull, uncharismatic man, with no vision for Nigeria. He is the most unaccomplished and unremarkable of all the presidential contestants. He has no grand plan for Nigeria, and any promises he has made have been hurriedly concocted to take advantage of an opportunity that he was not prepared for.

Anyone who is supporting Goodluck Jonathan is not doing it because the man is the best of the field. I have never seen so much money spent on promoting a thorough-going mediocrity such as GEJ. If the candidates are ranked, Goodluck Jonathan would not even make the first 5.
