Former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida, is in advanced talks with Peter Odili, former governor of Rivers State, as he closes in on a running mate for the 2011 presidential elections. A source within Mr. Babangida's camp said that the choice of Mr. Odili was strongly influenced by Raymond Dokpesi, chairman of DAAR Communications, and director general of Mr. Babangida's presidential campaign. The two men have a history of mutually beneficial dealings. Mr. Dokpesi was the director general of Mr. Odili's campaign when he ran for president in 2007. At the time, Mr. Odili was alleged to have invested N400 million of funds taken from the Rivers State treasury, into Mr. Dokpesi's company. The EFCC, under Farida Waziri, quizzed Mr. Dokpesi over the money, but no charges were ever filed. According to the source, "Odilli will be groomed as the person that will succeed General Babangida, come 2015." A controversial choice Mr. Babangida, who is at the centre of several allegations, will be picking an equally controversial character if he settles on Mr. Odili as a running mate. Mr. Odili was elected governor of Rivers State in 1999 and was re-elected in 2003. His tenure was marred by human rights violations, insecurity, and widespread accusations of fraud. During his governorship, Rivers State was, in theory, one of the wealthiest states in the country owing to its enormous oil revenue, but Mr. Odili instituted relatively few improvements. Instead, the former governor is on record for acquiring a South Africa-based hospital, and two Brazilian jets. In November 2006, Peter Odili announced that he would run for president in the 2007 election under the ruling PDP. However, a day before the PDP's presidential primaries, Mr. Odili stepped down from the contest, paving the way for fellow governor, Umaru Yar'Adua, to emerge as the party's flag bearer. Reports say Mr. Odili was forced out of that contest when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) led by Nuhu Ribadu, released a report implicating him in fraud, mismanagement of state funds, money laundering, and abuse of office. In February that year, Mr. Odili filed a suit challenging the powers of the EFCC to probe his administration. The court granted him an indefinite injunction stopping any investigations into his finances, describing it as a breach of his civil rights. The declaration It was expected that Mr. Odili would be unveiled at a rally for the official declaration of Mr. Babangida's intention on Wednesday in Abuja. However, a text sent out by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP. Rufa'i Ahmed Alkali. inviting all party executives to an emergency meeting on that same day , is raising eyebrows. The coincidence in the timing is leading to speculation that this may be an attempt to steal the thunder from Mr. Babangida's declaration. As of the time of going to press , we were unable to contact Mr. Babangida to find out if he intends to change his plans. . Text messages to Mr. Alkali seeking clarity on the matter, remained unanswered, http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/5618480-146/babangida_picks_odili_as_running_mate.csp

The police should play their constitutional role well, and not be an enemy of the state then you recieve less bashing ![]() |
ACTING Inspector-General of Police Hafiz Ringim assumed office Monday, warning his men to steer clear of partisan politics. Ringim, who noted that the nation is facing challenges in the build-up to next year's general elections, urged police commissioners to sit up and give Nigerians the best. His words: "You are now aware that in the next three months we shall have our elections according to the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Shortly, we shall commence the process of electioneering campaigns, the primaries of the parties and the rest of the political activities proper and it is my sincere advice and counsel, especially for those commissioners that hold command responsibilities, that they sit up and face the situation squarely. "Mr. President has on a number of occasions made the pronouncement of a free and fair election. I sincerely and honestly agree with him that what this nation needs is a free and fair election for us to move forward. "The police is at the centre of most of these activities and I seize this opportunity and request as well as direct and instruct that this, I don't want to call it regime, I want to call it administration, this leadership would not allow for any partisanship of any police officer in any political activities. "Therefore, that I would like to seize this opportunity and warn that officers and men that have anything to do with any political party's activities must be careful and cautious. We have gone through a lot of allegations and complaints and this is not the time when we will drag our names in the mud. "In line with the wishes and instructions and the directives of the Commander- in- Chief, we must all be able to provide a level-playing ground for all political participants as well as the political parties". Ringim thanked his predecessor, Ogbonna Onovo and the out-going former Deputy Inspectors- General (DIGs) for their efforts in combating crime and criminality across the nation. "We cannot but praise the last police administration for the efforts they put in, in spite of the numerous hurdles they had to cross. We can only praise their vision and we intend to look at what effort they have put, what problems they faced, what obstacles they had to cross and what impediments they had to come through and promise to rededicate ourselves to make sure that where changes are necessary, we shall make them, where difficulties are found we shall surmount them, where stubbornness is met we shall attempt to demolish them." Ringim is confident that the police are capable of living up to expectation in spite of the challenges confronting them, saying, the problems would be surmounted with the assistance of all stakeholders. He said: "Like Mr. Onovo has said, our nation is facing very difficult times and the police are part and parcel of the nation. Our nation cannot suffer without the police suffering and I know God willing, with the assistance of you and the remaining senior officers here and the necessary cooperation that they will give us, the assistance and help that the Federal Government will ensure come in more handy than before we shall definitely overcome." The Police chief lamented the high rate of kidnapping in the Southeast and warned the policemen in charge of the area to sit up. His words: "Sadly, you are aware of the menace of kidnapping particularly in the Southeast. I want to seize this opportunity and warn the operatives and operators, the leadership and the followers of policemen and women in that region that they must sit up. "The armed robbery being committed along some of our major roads must certainly be minimised. The corrupt tendencies of some of our personnel, particularly those on the check points must also stop. This and such other vices are the ones that have caused the members of the public to lose faith in us. We will be doing our very best like the former Inspector-General of Police has said that there are two things that have continuously dragged our name in the mud. "The leadership of this service that would be sooner inaugurated will definitely face squarely this menace and in the shortest possible time eradicate it. We have the police reforms ahead of us, we intend to, as a matter of urgency, do the best that we can to implement the white paper to the letter. We will not give room for any complaints from any quarters in our police activities. "I also want to say that the former IGP used to say that you cannot make omelette without breaking eggs and so without wanting to threaten anybody, without wanting to sound anything apart from civil, we have to make omelette and we have to break eggs and so if you don't want to be part of that omelette, don't allow yourself to be broken because the police have taken too much bashing. "It is something that we can collectively redeem. The police are one of the oldest organisations in this country and it is supposed to be the best. We have seen how various outfits have been carved out of the Nigeria Police Force. "That is the prerogative of government and over the years we have also allowed the government by giving them reason to do that. This administration would not allow for any reason for government to think of further clipping the size or the number of the outfit of the police. I want to assure you that we will be honest, straightforward and just.

It is not in the character of the Government to bring culprit to justice, No matter how highly placed since the killers of Bola Ige were no where to be found over how many years now ![]() |
IT was the kind of setting and he would have loved. There were frontline politicians, rights activists, students and scholars. Those were the people among whom the late Chief Bola Ige was usually found. A crowd of admirers of the late Cicero of Esa Oke gathered in Ibadan to celebrate his 80th commemorative birthday with a lecture. The late Ige, Second Republic Governor of the old Oyo State, was assassinated in his Ibadan home on December 23, 2001. He was the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. At the lecture organised by the Bola Ige Movement, former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said Ige was killed to pave the way for a grand plan to destroy the legacies of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo by "capturing the Southwest". He said those who killed Ige actually succeeded during the 2003 elections but that the massive success of welfarist governance in Lagos, Ondo and Edo states, which are still being led by the progressives, has further exposed the enemies of democracy as they have plunged other states in the region deeper into poverty. "Contrast the mass paralysis in these four states to the galloping progress in Lagos and Ondo states, where progressive forces are in charge, and you will realise the futility of the action of the reactionary forces that claim to hold our people in thrall. Add the glad tidings coming out of Edo State and you will easily realise why our Southwest must regain its progressive political soul, as a prelude to democratically gaining power at the centre in 2011. This is in order to spread the gospel of liberty, freedom, development and prosperity, which we once took as given here, until the illegitimates came galloping into town," Tinubu, who chaired the occasion. The former Lagos Governor was represented by Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the gubernatorial candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN) in Ekiti State. Dignitaries across the country poured encomiums on the late Ige for his ideas, ideals and dream of a great Nigeria. Besides, leading lights of progressive ideas and politics renewed their vow to carry on his ideals. Tinubu said: "Indeed, it is tribute to the resilience of the Bola Ige spirit, and the determination of our people to follow the proven political track that has delivered them from poverty in the past, that I stand before you as chairman of this event. "We have put our hands on the plough and there must be no going back. We must seize the living spirit of Bola Ige to politically liberate our land from vote robbers and set our people and the rest of Nigerians on a path of sustainable and irreversible development." Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who delivered the lecture, "The Nigerian Dream", spoke on how to police Nigeria with only 5,000 well-trained officers and men. He decried the state of insecurity in the country. According to him, there must be a different approach to security, if the government is to live up to the expectations of the people. "No noble dream can survive in an environment devoid of security: an environment full of killing, maiming, kidnapping and robbery. No single person is being punished for religious riots in Nigeria today," Ribadu stated. Ribadu, who is believed to be interested in running for president next year, said Nigerians could only make the country of their dream by following the ideals of the late Ige. He added that unless every generation acts and advances in the journey towards the set dream, the target may remain a mirage. In his view, any generation that fails to act is also failing the incoming generation. Lamenting the inability of the Federal Government to track down Ige’s killers, Ribadu noted that one calamity that befell Nigeria is its inability to bring evil doers to justice. He said the country does not need more than 5,000 well-trained and motivated policemen to provide security for the entire population, If he had the chance, Ribadu said he would demonstrate how to provide adequate security for the entire citizenry with just 5,000 motivated policemen. "With 5,000 policemen ready to do the work, you can tackle crime in Nigeria. Give me 5,000 policemen and you will never hear crime again in Nigeria. I would have loved to do that, if I was still in the police. "No noble dream can survive in an environment devoid of security: an environment full of killing, maiming, kidnapping and robbery. No single person is being punished for religious riots in Nigeria today." Eulogising the late Ige, Ribadu said "When leaders are fair and just, there will be peace, justice and then development. Bola Ige fought, lived and died for those ideals" Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN), who was represented by Rev. Tunde Adebiyi, praised "Bola Ige’s life of vision and commitment to national issues and nation building", stressing that it "represents a charter of patriotic challenge for all of us who believe strongly in the Nigerian project". He added: "We have taken time to scrutinize the records of our great progressives and we have examined the achievements of our forerunners in this business of governance, especially in the South-West. And we have discovered that although they had limited resources and barely-developed technologies, their vision and commitment to create a welfarist state where developments, education, infrastructure construction and developments have been the cornerstone of good governance that people have been desiring. Their focus to fight ignorance and illiteracy, the forerunners of poverty, has inspired us to commit huge resources to education and infrastructural developments in Lagos State. We feel we do not have any excuse not to outdo some of their deeds, considering the resources and technology now at our disposal." Ondo State Governor Segun Mimiko, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Ranti Akerele, said Mimiko’s victory in the court sounded a death knell to the forces of retrogression in the state. Mr Muyiwa Ige, son of the late Ige, thanked his father’s admirers and followers for remembering him. He noted that his father would have turned the old Oyo State to a mini paradise, if he had access to the funds the current governors have. Some of the dignitaries at the event include leaders of Action Congress of Nigeria across the Southwest, including former governors Bamidele Olumilua, Alhaji Lam Adesina and Otunba Niyi Adebayo. Others include Prof. Adebayo Williams, Dr Olu Agunloye, Chief Ayo Fasanmi and Mr Babafemi Ojudu.

Original Bad Belle, so what will the participation of IBB and co will do to Jega's name ![]() |
Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attaihiru Jega, may drag his cherished name through the mud with the participation of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 presidential election. Former Lagos State Commissioner of Police and anti-corruption crusader, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, said this during an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, last week, in Makurdi, Benue State. “I see Professor Jega’s failure has started with President Jonathan’s involvement in next year’s elections. You know the chairman is known to be of good character and can deliver but this time round, the factors against his success are more than what will enhance his capacity,” Tsav said. The social critic, who identified with the political aspirations of former military heads of state,, General Mohammadu Buhari and General Ibrahim Babangida, said Buhari was known for his transparency, accountability and probity at every stage of his leadership of the nation and the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) Task Force. “Buhari, we all know, is not corrupt and no individual or body had levelled a case of corruption against him and being a very disciplined individual who has the interest of the nation at heart is an asset to the country,” he said. Babangida, he added, related well with people across the country. In South-West, South-East and South-South, he was known for touching on the lives of the people so also in the northern states. He argued that it was wrong for anybody to accuse Babangida of being the one who institutionalised corruption in the country, saying that what led to the first military coup in 1966 was attributed to corruption and a break down of law and order in Nigeria. |

Suddenly, there was downpour, followed by thunderstorm. So, we later moved into the church as the key was in my possession. We continued the prayer. It was shock and initially, disbelief among residents of Tanke area of Ilorin, Kwara State, when news filtered into the town that a pastor raped a girl on the church altar during a vigil. But what looked like a fairy tale earlier turned out to be real, going by the victim’s revelations. The suspect, Olabode Sunday, 31, allegedly invited Funke, 25, (other names withheld), who had just concluded the National youth’s service, for prayers to pave the way for her land a white collar job. Daily Sun gathered that midway into the vigil, there was a heavy rainfall, which made the weather very cold. It was at that point that the temptation to convert the vigil to love meeting crept in. The Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), pastor was alleged to have succumbed to nature, as he started making love overtures to the girl he was supposed to take her case of joblessness to God. He allegedly raped the hapless girl. Sunday, who was remorseful, blamed the incident on the devil. He narrated how the victim attended a vigil, where he prayed for her, but saw the need for another round of vigil, which according to him, was scheduled for August 14. “Funke came to my house at about 7.00 pm on August 14 and we later moved into the church behind the prayer ground. We started the prayer at about 12 midnight. Suddenly, there was downpour, followed by thunderstorm. So, we later moved into the church as the key was in my possession. We continued the prayer. At about 3.00 am, I hugged her and later I lost control of myself. One thing led to the other. That was how I had carnal knowledge of her,” he confessed. He disclosed that after having sex with her, he encouraged and assured her that God would still provide job for her. “So, both of us left the church at about 5.00 am,” he said. The victim, who also spoke to Daily Sun narrated how the suspect had been praying for members of the family for years. According to her, that was what motivated her to request him to pray for her to secure a job. “He forced himself on me and had sex with me on the altar. He later begged me to forgive him, claiming it was the handiwork of the devil. The following morning, I reported the matter at ‘F’ police Division in Tanke,” she said. A member of the church, Kunle Alade, who spoke to Daily Sun on the matter, described it as unfortunate. According to him, the suspect has dented the image of the church. He also wondered why he chose the altar for such an unholy act. He fumed: “This is a shameful act.” Confirming the incident, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Murkta said the suspect was arrested for forcefully having carnal knowledge of the victim. He disclosed that the victim was taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed that she was raped.
