The First Lady’s two-day visit to Rivers State ended in a fiasco yesterday. All was well, until Dame Patience Jonathan and her chief host, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi got to Okrika – the First Lady’s home town. The governor was explaining by video his school project in Okrika, saying there must be demolition of some buildings to have space for the schools. Mrs Jonathan cut in, grabbed the microphone and said the governor should reconsider the way he was going about the demolition. An attempt by Amaechi to explain the situation sent the First Lady boiling. She shouted at Amaechi: "Listen!, you must listen to me!" The governor was embarrassed, like a scolded school pupil. The audience hailed Mrs Jonathan, goading the First Lady on. The President’s wife, however, described land as a serious issue in Okrika and told Amaechi to always avoid "must" when talking about waterfronts’ demolition. The governor never mentioned "waterfronts", but Mrs. Jonathan went on: "I want you to get me clear. I am from here (Okrika). I know the problems of my people. So, I know what I am talking. I do not want us to go into crises. We are preaching peace and we must maintain peace at any time. "But what I am telling you is that you always say you must demolish. That word ‘must, you use is not good. It is by pleading. You appeal to the owners of the compound, because they will not go into exile. Land is a serious issue." Downcast, Amaechi shunned a reception organised for the First Lady. The reception was, however, not on the programme. Mrs Jonathan hurriedly left for Abuja. Her planned visit to Port Harcourt prisons, where the Chief Judge, Justice Iche Ndu, was expected to release some prisoners, was cancelled. So was her visit to the new Model Secondary School at Ebubu-Eleme, among others. A civic reception in honour of the President’s wife was held at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt on Monday. Her pet programme, Women for Change Initiative (WFCI), was launched. This was followed by a state banquet/Award Night at the Government House, Port Harcourt, where the former Miss World, Agbani Darego, who hails from the state, and some women were honoured for their outstanding contributions to society.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar yesterday said the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections was predicted by former presidential aspirant of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), the late Maj-Gen Sheu Musa Yar’Adua. The election won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola of the SDP, was annulled by former military president Ibrahim Babangida (rtd). Atiku said the North decided to endorse Abiola because the South-West, his region, would resist the annulment of the poll. He was speaking at the presentation in Lagos of a book entitled: Diary of a debacle: Tracking Nigeria’s failed democratic transition (1989-1994), written by journalism teacher and master satirist, Dr Olatunji Dare. It was the first public function he attended along with the leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria (A C N), following his defection from the old Action Congress(AC) early in the year. The cream of society, cutting across the political class, traditional institution, clergy and media, converged on the Agip Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos for the ceremony. Atiku, who bought the book for N2.5 million, limited his narration to his involvement in the critical Jos, Plateau State primaries of the SDP which generated tension following the earlier decision of northern delegates not to vote for Abiola. His revelation echoed the popular sentiment then that the late business mogul-turned politician was strategically endorsed as the presidential candidate in 1993. Atiku, the Turakin Adamawa, recalled that many Nigerians never trusted the transition programme of Gen. Babangida, pointing out that "one Nigerian who predicted the annulment was the late Maj-Gen Yar’Adua’. ‘Before the primaries, the northern delegates met and decided to vote for Abiola. The calculation was that I would emerge as his deputy. At the first primaries, Abiola emerged first and I was third. Delegates were not happy. I invited Yar’Adua to Jos to resolve the impasse. He drove in the night and arrived in the morning in Jos. He appealed to the delegates to vote for Abiola at the second ballot for two reasons. "One, Yar’Adua said the West voted for me in the SDP primaries. Second, if either Atiku or Kingibe emerges, Babangida would most likely annul the election and if he did it, the North was not politically sophisticated to protest. But if you annul Abiola’s election, the West was politically sophisticated to resist it and that was what exactly happened", he said. The former Vice President said the prediction of Gen Yar’Adua came to pass, recalling that, when the poll was annulled, the West boiled. Atiku, who prayed for the repose of Abiola and Yar’Adua said they paid the supreme price. |

It started as a mere rumour, but confirmation came yesterday that four players in the World Cup-bound Nigeria U-17 female team, the Flamingoes, will not make the trip to Florida, United States on Tuesday, following the alleged denial of visa to them by the American Embassy over age discrepancy. Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa will fly Africa’s flag in this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup which will hold in Trinidad and Tobago from September 5 to 28. The Nigerian team was originally scheduled to jet out to Florida today for a pre-World Cup training tour, but the trip has been moved to Tuesday next week following delay in securing visas for the girls. In preparation for the tour, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was said to have submitted the names of 25 players and an undisclosed number of officials to the American Embassy in Abuja. The football house had wanted to take all 25 players to Florida for the training tour where it would pick its final 21 list. It was learnt that midway into the process of issuing visas to the players and their officials, the embassy allegedly noticed age discrepancy in the document submitted by some of the players. “About 10 players had already been issued visa when an official of the embassy discovered that some of the players had earlier used different ages to seek visas at different times. The embassy immediately stopped the process and that was what caused the delay in their trip to Florida,” a source told The Guardian. However, the embassy was said to have eventually issued visa to 21 players and officials of the team yesterday, excluding the four players. Officials of the team are keeping the situation secret, even as Head Coach, Peter Dedevbo, and his assistant, Adanna Nwaneri, said yesterday that there was nothing of such in the team. But when The Guardian sought the view of the Technical Director of the NFF, James Peter, yesterday, he painted a different story yesterday, saying: “It is true the embassy turned down our visa request for four players, but nobody has explained to us the reasons behind it. We submitted the names of 25 players for the training tour in Florida because we felt that in case of an injury, the coaches should have alternative players to fall back to in making their final selection. We will travel with the 21 players that got visa. That is the required number for the FIFA competition, but the embassy should have seen reasons with us,” Peter stated. Efforts to speak with the embassy officials were unsuccessful yesterday. This is not the first time the Flamingoes team is being hit with age controversy. When Nigeria defeated South Africa 7-1 goals aggregate to pick the World Cup ticket earlier in the year, the South Africans petitioned FIFA to challenge the age claims of four players in the Flamingoes’ squad. Some of the players, including Charity Adule who was part of the Flamingoes qualification, was later dropped after playing in the Nigeria U-20 (Falconets) team at the last FIFA U-20 World Cup in Germany. The Flamingoes will begin their Group A campaign on September 5 against Korea DPR. |

THE leadership of the Southern Forum has given- some conditions which former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, must fulfil to qualify to contest the presidency in the 2011 elections. The former military despot is one of the political gladiators angling to slug it out with the incumbent president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, even as the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has given the president the green light to contest the election. However, the Southern Forum in a statement made available to Sunday Tribune said that IBB, though qualified to contest the presidency, must fulfil certain conditions before he can get the support of the South West zone. The forum in the statement signed by its Secretary General, Chief (Dr.) Dejo Raimi and Publicity Secretary, Honourable Kehinde Ayoola, said that, among others, the former military dictator should bring along with him the late Chief MKO Abiola and the late Mr. Dele Giwa whenever he is coming to the South West to launch his presidential campaign. In the release entitled, “That Babangida May Win 2011 Elections,” the group said, “we have watched, with keen interest, the various calculations, permutations and debates on who should be or which zone should produce the next president of Nigeria in 2011. “One of the names being bandied about as a possible candidate in the next presidential election is General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd), former military president between August 1985 and August 1993.” It noted that IBB was qualified to run for the highest public office in the land, having served in various capacities in the military for 31 years before beocoming the president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces in 1985. The forum also observed that the South West was very critical to the realisation of IBB’s presidential ambition in 2011, adding that every astute politician knows the importance of the zone in the quest for democratic development. The forum, in what appears to be a mockery of the former dictator’s presidential ambition, said that failure of his initial bid to launch his campaign in Ibadan last July nothwithstanding, he would once again seek to launch another campaign in the zone very soon. “On the new date that IBB may choose to relaunch the campaign in Ibadan, he must come with Moshood Kashimowo Abiola (MKO) and Dele Giwa to Mapo Hall and pay subsequent courtesy calls on the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadan and other monarchs. “He must also come with a petition and sworn affidavit in support of his election, jointly signed and agreed upon by all those Nigerians who lost their means of livelihood as a result of his Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) as well as all those thousands that lost their lives during the demonstrations in support of the validation of the June 12, 1993 elections. “The organisation of this rally has been estimated to cost 12.4 billion dollars and we must receive the amount one week before the date. “He should also furnish us and indeed all Nigerians with the believable details or particulars of items that he forgot in Aso Rock Villa during his eight year rulership when he was not only in government, but also in power”. The forum said that it is only when he fulfils the conditions that he can get the support of the people in the South West. http://www.tribune.com.ng/sun/index.php/front-page-articles/1921-2011-south-west-will-support-ibb-if-southern-forum Babangida and June 12= https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeRVxgE4Iaw&feature=related |
