The EFCC, Benin Zonal Office today, October 21, 2019, secured the conviction of an internet fraudster, Onineh Dickson Imaboyor (a.k.a Michael Wallace ) before Justice A Demi-Ajayi of the Federal High Court sitting in Benin, Edo State.


Imaboyor who has been sent to jail for nine months had impersonated one Michael Wallace, an American and through that defrauded vulnerable women of their hard earned money.

A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on Monday October 21, 2019 ordered the temporary forfeiture of two properties located in Ikoyi area of Lagos State and belonging to the immediate past Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, to the Federal Government. .

The Ilorin Zonal Office of the EFCC had in an ex parte application filed by the Commission's Lawyer Nnaemeka Omewa approached the Court, seeking an order of interim forfeiture of the properties located at No. 17A McDonald Road, Ikoyi, Eti Osa Local Government Area of Lagos, alleging that they were acquired through proceeds of unlawful activities.

The Economic EFCC, Sokoto Zonal Office has arraigned one Aliyu Mallam Yabo, an Operation Manager of the Yabo Micro Finance Bank, before Justice Isah Muhammad Bargaja of the Sokoto State High Court on a one-count charge bordering false declaration of assets. .

Yabo's trouble started on January 29, 2019 when the Commission received a petition against him by Yabo Micro Finance Bank Management. In the course of investigation, he was alleged to be given a booklet of Assets Declaration, he refused, failed and neglected to declare his entire assets.

The Police Force stormed the purported remand home in Katsina on Saturday last week, an operation which led to the freedom of the victims while arrests were made.

The centre is being operated by one 78-year-old Bello Umar of Sabon Garin Daura in Daura LGA of the state.

However, news of the operation went viral on Monday afternoon while the spokesman for the Katsina State Police Command, Mr Gambo Isah, confirmed that minors and teenagers were among those rescued.

“In the course of the investigation, sixty-seven persons from the ages of 7 to 40 years were found shackled with chains.

“Victims were also found to have been subjected to various inhuman and degrading treatments,” Isha said in a statement.

The command warned parents to desist from taking their children to illegal, unauthorised or unapproved rehabilitation centres otherwise known as “Makarantar Mallam Mai – Mari”.

It, however, urged parents to take their recalcitrant children to only government-recognised and approved rehabilitation facilities of centres provided by the government itself.

According to the statement, the victims have already been evacuated to hospital for treatment while efforts are ongoing to reunite them with their respective families.

The EFCC, Uyo Zonal office on Monday October 14, 2019 arrested two staffs of Communication Trend Limited, Prisca Isaac, Sales Representative and Nwosu Precious, Technician at 111 Atiku Abubakar Avenue, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State for alleged illegal transmission of broadcast signals of Multichoice (DSTV) to Uyo and environs without authorisation.

The company allegedly charges Three Thousand Five Hundred Naira (N3, 500.00) and Seven Thousand Five Hundred Naira (N7, 500.00) monthly as subscription fees to its customers using DSTV and other decoders without permission. The arrest followed a petition alleging breach of Multichoice's English Premiership broadcast rights.

During the arrest, the following items were recovered: 2 DSTV Decoders, 1 GOTV Decoder, 28 Well-AV encoders, 3 Transmitters mode ADC Telecommunications, 3 Modulators, 2 UBS DTX 1008 Transmitters, 2 Startimes Decoders, 1 Omovo TV Decoder, 1Trendy TV Decoder, 1 CTL N7, 500 Subscription Recharge Cards, 1 CTL N3, 500 Subscription Recharge Card, Tiger T1000 Decoder and 1 Starsat Decoder.

The suspects will be charged to court when investigation is concluded.

Nigeria's Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed on Thursay October 10, announced that online news platforms will now be regulated as he inaugurated a seven-man committee to implement reforms in the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Speaking at the event, Lai Mohammed said President Buhari has approved the upward review of fines from N500,000 to N5 million for hate speech offences as well as the amendment to the NBC act to enable it to license WebTv and radio stations, including foreign broadcasters beaming signals into the country. There is also an upgrade of political comments relating to hate speech to ”Class A” offence in the broadcasting code.

“The terms of reference of the committee are as follows; To establish and publish a new regulation for the licensing of web and internet broadcasters/international broadcasters in Nigeria,” he said.

“To immediately commence work on all statutory, legal and regulatory framework for further legislative action on the review of the NBC act by the national assembly.

“To work out the modalities for a competitive and reasonable salaries, wages and other welfare needs of the staff of the commission.

“To establish necessary protocols for the establishment or appointment of professionals or technocrats (non-partisan personality) to run the agency, and appointment into the board of the NBC.

“I have no doubt that this committee, which comprises highly-experienced professionals and administrators, will carry out a thorough job that will reposition the NBC as an effective and efficient regulator,” Lai added.

The Dunamis International Gospel Centre, on Tuesday distanced itself from an online Ponzi scheme called "Dunamis Investment Platform.

The church, under the leadership of Dr. Pastor Paul and Dr. Mrs. Becky Paul-Enenche, declared that the ministry does not operate a Ponzi scheme, stressing that such was a "scam."

This warning was contained in a statement signed by Pastor Victor Stephen, Head, Central Admin of the church on Tuesday. The statement urged Nigerians against transacting any business with such platform because its owners are fraudsters.

It further warned that anyone caught in the act would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Thursday urged Nigerians to prepared for tough times ahead of 2020 budget circle, even as he described the budget document presented to the National Assembly by General Muhammadu Buhari as a 'scam'.

Frank said after a careful study of the content of the fiscal document, what the President submitted to the National Assembly shows that not only will Nigerians be heavily taxed, fuel subsidy will be completely removed while social investment programme will cease to exist.

In a statement made available to newsmen Thursday in Abuja, the political activist said from all indications, the 2020 budget as presented has nothing in stock for the common man.

Frank said Nigerians should observe that since the APC’s administration came in 2015, national budgets have been increased annually but without concomitant positive effects on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

He challenged the National Assembly under the leadership of Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila to tell Nigerians the implementation level of the 2019 budget?

The activist believe that the current National Assembly would rubber stamp the 2020 budget as presented by General Buhari without asking necessary questions expected of a functioning and independent arm of government.

"After careful study, I have concluded that this 2020 budget is more or less a scam. It is not meant to rescue Nigerians from the current economic hardship that has sent more than 94 millions to below poverty line.

"It is a document without fuel subsidy, social investment scheme but a very high level of taxes. So, I urge Nigerians to prepare for the worst.

"Unfortunately, the country will miss the 8th National Assembly under Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogara, who resisted many anti-people policies which would have scaled through against the express wish of Nigerians. Under the current NASS, it will, most definitely, be a ‘yes sir’ kind of National Assembly," Frank said.

While challenging General Buhari on the effect his previous budgets have had on Nigerians, Frank asked the presidency to tell the world why the country does not have a new refinery since the partial removal of fuel subsidy by the administration and what has happened with the recovered loot since 2015?

"Since the partial removal of fuel subsidy, the APC’s government has not stopped borrowing money both locally and internationally to fund yearly budgets just as Nigerians are yet to see the new refinery promised by government.”

According to him, “The more increase in the annual budget, the more poverty in the land.

“The proposed 7.5 per cent VAT to fund education, health and infrastructure is another bogus tactics by the APC’s government to further compound the hardship of suffering citizens," Frank said.

He, therefore urged Nigerians to be strong and endure the times, saying "even those who were used for the re-election of the APC administration in 2019 are already regretting their actions and participation secretly."

The suspects were arrested during a sting operation in the early hours of Friday, September 27, 2019 at three different locations in the Alagbado area of Lagos State, following intelligence reports received by the Commission from concerned members of the public about their alleged involvement in the criminal activities.

During the raid, about five of the suspects attempted to escape arrest by taking refuge inside the ceiling of their apartments. They were, however, immediately apprehended by operatives of the EFCC.

Items recovered from the suspects at the point of arrest include charms, phones, laptops and five cars-Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry 2004 model, Toyota Camry 2007 model, Toyota Camry 1999 model and Honda Pilot.

The Honourable Speaker of  House of Representative, Femi Gbajabiamila has applauded the BBC African Eye for the eye-opener on the sexual harassment of female students in the country's tertiary institutions.

He however called on lecturers, who are yet to be caught to desist from the act.

The revelations in the @BBCAfrica #SexForGrades documentary brings to the fore despicable practices that have victimised too many young people, denied them their sense of self worth and left them with psychological wounds that often never heal.

These revelations call for a moment of reckoning, not only for those lecturers whose abuse of their position and the trust of their students has been caught on tape, but those who are still hiding in the shadows.

Our higher institutions where this culture of abuse have been allowed to thrive must also acknowledge their responsibility and act to put an end to these shameful practices. We owe our children that much.

Pastor Tunde Bakare has addressed the issue of insecurity in Nigeria . The general overseer of the Latter rain Assembly said that the level of insecurity in Nigeria cannot be overemphasied.

According to Bakare, is a non-negotiable need for a shakeup in Nigeria's security structure The general overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, has decried the growing insecurity in Nigeria under the administration of All progressives Congress party led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Bakare who spoke at the church headquarters in Lagos on Sunday, October 6, said there is a non-negotiable need for a shakeup in Nigeria's security structure.

He also urged the president to ensure that the needful is done to end the carnage in states across the country.

According to the pastor who was also a running mate to President Buhari in the 2011 presidential election under the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the strategic security threat in the country can be blamed on foreign actors who have one political or financial interest in the country or other.

"We must embrace multilevel policing in the spirit of true federalism, setting in place appropriate constitutional checks and balances to prevent abuse. Not to act swiftly, or to do otherwise, can only be counterproductive to our stability and progress," Bakare said.

A stranded man hanging on to a truck on Sunday, October 6th fell off the speeding truck on the Third Mainland Bridge but was rescued by Rapid Response Squad (RRS) officers on the bridge.  

The young man, identified as Lookman, was stranded around 2:00am on the mainland before hanging on to a truck enroute Lagos Island.  

Noticing that he was being driven beyond his preffered stop which was Adekunle Bus Stop, Lookman jumped down while the truck was on speed. He lost his balance and fell to the ground. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has queried the General Manager of the state’s Urban Development Board for renaming some streets in the state capital.

According to a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase in Makurdi, Ortom directed the board to immediately stop the renaming and dismantle nameplates mounted on the affected streets.

The governor particularly directed it to reverse the renaming of Ahmadu Bello Way which was renamed after him. He further directed the General Manager to explain within 24 hours why the agency embarked on the renaming of streets without approval.

The street renaming had been met with negative reaction from the residents of the people. The streets renamed include- Ahmadu Bello Way to Samuel Ortom Road, Gboko Ring Road to Tony Ijohor Road, Gyado Hospital Road to James Ortese Ayatse Road.

Others are Mkar Road to Iyorchia Ayu Road, St John Road leading to Tor Tiv Palace to Makir Dzakpe Way among others.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, Abuja zonal office, on Thursday, October 3, 2019 arraigned the duo of Brigadier General Tarelah Paul Boroh (rtd) and Hanafi Musa Moriki, before Justice O. O. Goodluck of the FCT High Court, Abuja on a nine count charge, bordering on criminal breach of trust to the tune of N974,768,466 and $1,914,000.

The defendants are said to have on different occasions, dishonestly converted the sums of N8,601,571; N106,288,445; N12,078,450; N382,800,000; N456,000,000; N9,000,000 and more, while being public officers.

Count three of the charge reads: “That you, Paul Boroh and Hanafi, Moriki between the 1st of December 2016 and 30th July, 2017 at Abuja within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court whilst being public servants entrusted with property to wit funds of the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, dishonestly converted the sum of One Million, Seven Hundred and Fourteen Thousand United States Dollars to your own use and thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under section 315 of the Penal Code Law”.

They pleaded not guilty to all the counts brought against them by the EFCC.

In view of their plea, counsel to the 1st defendant Mike Ozekhome SAN prayed the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms, stating that his client willingly brought himself to court despite his failing health.

Counsel to the 2nd defendant, OA Dada also prayed the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms.

However, prosecuting counsel, Aisha A.T Habib opposed the bail applications, stating that a counter affidavit had been filed against the applications and prayed the court to grant the case accelerated hearing.

The Judge however granted the defendants bail in the following terms: while the 1st defendant was offered a N2m bail, the 2nd defendant was granted bail in the sum of N20m. The defendants are to provide 2 sureties not below the rank of Assistant Director in the Federal Public Service, who must be resident in Abuja. The defendants are also to deposit their International passports with the court registry.

Justice Goodluck thereafter adjourned the case to 26, 27 November and 3, 4 December 2019 for trial.

Former Chief of Army Staff and Defence staff, General Alani Akinrinade has advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to desist from public letter-writing, in a bid to make a point.



Akinrinade acknowledged that it is Obasanjo’s fundamental right to make a point, letter writing does not befit him as a leader and statesman. Akinrinade said since Obasanjo has unfettered access to those in power, letter-writing may not be a good option.



He also said whenever Obasanjo wrote his letters to the president, what came to his mind was how he handled similar matters when he was in the saddle. Acknowledging Obasanjo’s role in history, Akinrinade said statesmen should consult with those in power and offer constructive criticisms, instead of going to the public.



The former Army chief spoke with reporters in Lagos, ahead of his 80th birthday holding in Ibadan, Oyo State capital in October.

”If I have an opportunity to advise him, I will say he should not write letters again. Each time he writes letter, the question I ask is: when he was there, how did he do it? He should not write letters again. He has access to them and he can give his advice, instead of writing” he said.

Akinrinade, who assessed the 20 years of stable civil rule, said it could have been better. ”We have not found exactly the formula. My assessment is that we have done very poorly. We could do much better.”
