Politics › Cross River Gov. Ben Ayade Declares Green Holiday For Planting 1m Trees by MrTrend(op): 10:19am On Jul 19, 2019 |
The Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade has declared July 30th every year, starting from 2019, as a public holiday for the planting of one million trees in a ceremony known as the Green Carnival.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Christian Ita on Wednesday in Calabar, quoted the governor as explaining that setting aside a day for tree planting “underscores our readiness for the REDD+ and commitment to forest conservation and management.”
As reported by PMNewsnigeria, REDD+ is Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation, plus the sustainable management of forests, and the conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
It is also an essential part of the global efforts to mitigate climate change, while FAO is supporting developing countries in their REDD+ processes and in turning their political commitments, as represented in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDD), into action on the ground.
The governor, who disclosed that one million trees would be planted during this year’s Green Carnival, said the exercise was also aimed at addressing the challenge of urban deforestation.
He said the event which is to take place simultaneously across the 18 local government areas of the state “is one of the measures to tackle global warming, deforestation and climate change”.
He expressed the optimism that the state’s forest cover, which represents 58 percent of Nigeria’s forest cover, would, through the Green Carnival, grow to 68 percent.
The governor said that the event would also drive home the state’s commitment towards the implementation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the 275km Superhighway project in the state.
Ayade expressed optimism that the state’s forest cover, which represents 58 percent of Nigeria’s forest cover, will through the Green Carnival, grow to 68 percent.
He pledged that the Urban Green Canopy Calabar initiative would sustain Calabar as the greenest city in Nigeria and Cross River as the greenest state.
He added: “Consequently, all schools, homes, ministries, government agencies and departments, banks, hospitals and all business premises must plant new trees.
“Subsequently it will be an offence not to plant a tree on that day.” Read more at https://www.brainnewsradio.com/gov-ayade-of-cross-river-declares-green-holiday-for-planting-1m-trees/

On Wednesday, unidentified gunmen killed two soldiers and kidnapped an expatriate at a road construction site in Ukanafun council area of Akwa Ibom State.
The two soldiers were shot dead while escorting an expatriate engineer in a routine inspection of a road project along Idim Okpok mini bridge in Inen Ekeffe the boundary village between Oruk Anam and Ukanafun local government area of the state, the reports gathered.
An eyewitness, Friday Idiok, told newsmen that the gunmen whisked the expatriate engineer away immediately the two soldiers were shot dead on the spot and residents ran away for fear of arrest by security operatives.
He said: “There were sporadic shootings here and before you know what was happening, two soldiers were dead. The gunmen also escaped with the soldiers’ guns and took the expatriate to their hideout. Everybody here is in panic, we don’t know what the government would do in this matter.”
Also reacting on the incident, the clan head of Inen, His Royal Highness, Obong Johnson Johnny Obosi said the incident was worrisome and called the government to action.
According to him, “We were at a burial of one of our brothers, late Mr. Udoimoh and about to be entertained, we heard gunshots. The next report was that two soldiers attached to expatriates working on the road construction project that links my community with Ukanafun have been killed and the expatriate kidnapped.
He added that soldiers from Ibagwa barracks arrived in their ambulance and carried the corpse of the dead soldiers to the mortuary.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom, Odiko Macdon has confirmed the incident and promised to arrest those involved in the crime.
In a text message, Macdon said the police got the report and have made moves to arrest all the culprits.
“We have received information about the unfortunate dastardly incident at the road project in Ikot Ibritam, Inen Ekeffe leading to Ukanafun. We are working with our sister agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those involved.” Read more at: https://www.brainnewsradio.com/gunmen-kill-two-soldiers-abduct-expatriate-at-a-construction-site-in-akwa-ibom/
